Niah Wood of New Hampshire and Polly Hoyt of Vermont, his wife. The Woods were
pioneer settlers in New York, Michigan and in Noble County, Ind. Harrison,

Detroit. The parents with 5 other children followed him 2 years later to
Michigan, where they all remained another year and came to Noble County in 1837,
settling at Rochester in Perry Twp. In 1844 he married Barbara Engle, a daughter
of Adam Engle, one of the very earliest pioneers, in whose house was held the
first court in Noble County. He was elected sheriff of Noble County in that
year, and the first home for the newly wedded pair was in Augusta, then the
county seat. Subsequently he was appointed and afterwards elected probate judge
and filled that office until it was constitutionally abolished in 1851, when he
resumed his farming operations in Perry Twp. Here he remained until 1874 when he
retired and located in Ligonier; built a fine town residence where the remaining
22 years of his life were passed. When he was sheriff he took convicts to the
Jeffersonville state prison, first in a farm wagon to Fort Wayne, thence by

Cromwell. He laid out, in 1859, Wood’s Addition to Ligonier. He was at one
time the owner of city property in Omaha, Neb., which he sold for $50,000. He
had 500 acres of rich land in Noble County and before the great decline in real
estate his wealth must have been considerably over $200,000. His first wife died
in 1858 leaving 2 children, Frank P. and Alice. In 1860 he married Elmira L.
Drake who died in 1895, leaving a son, Wilbur, now living in Vermont. His death
