Strong Mattie Maude - LaGrange, Ind. Oct. 19 - A case in which a number of U. S. post office inspectors were engaged, and also a U. S. marshal, came to a tragic end at Kendallville. For over a year a large number of anonymous letters have been mailed at the Kendallville post office to prominent society women and men. The letters contained most obscene matter, but were not heeded until a number were received by the same persons. One prominent young woman who had received several became so worried about the matter that her reason became affected and she is now confined in a sanitarium. After a few months the matter was reported to the post office department and several inspectors in succession made an investigation, when Chief Inspector Moore took the case and by the aid of marked stamps, traced the letters, it is claimed to Mrs. Alonzo Strong, who, when confronted with the charge, strongly denied it. Other alleged evidence was secured and a warrant sent to deputy U. S. marshal Rose of Angola, who being busy, delayed going to Kendallville until yesterday, when he found that Mrs. Strong was buried the day previous. Mrs. Strong, it is said, procured a quantity of chloroform and iodine and took it in small doses. Her husband is prominent in the city and both have always borne excellent reputations. She was 30 years of age and moved in good society. + No date

Strouss Jonas was born in Northampton County, Penn. Oct. 9, 1800; died in Swan Twp Oct. 12, 1900, aged 100 years and 3 days. He was the second in a family of 7 children. His mother died when he was 15 years old and his father lived to the advanced age of 97 years. The family moved to western Pennsylvania before he reached his majority and on Jan. 16, 1823 he was married in Beaver County, that state, to Anna McCartney. In 1836 he, with his wife and family, which then consisted of 6 children, removed to Noble County. They resided for a short time with his brother, John Strouse, who accompanied them from Pennsylvania and who located on the land on which the town of Swan now stands. Later he (Jonas) purchased from the government land in the unbroken forest in Swan Twp, built a cabin and located his family there. This land he cleared and made into a comfortable home, where the family resided for nearly a half century. Five children were born to them in Swan Twp, making eleven in all. Two of the children died in infancy and two died many years later, Mrs. Eliza Thaon dying in Texas several years ago, and Mrs. Mary Whan in Swan Twp four years ago. When their children had married and left the old home, Mr. and Mrs. Strouss moved to Avilla, where on July 8, 1886, Mrs. Strouss died at the age of 82. After her death Mr. Strouss made his home with his eldest daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Crothers, who resides near the Strouss homestead. Although always greatly interested in the church near his home, a liberal supporter of it, and a student of the Bible, yet it was not until 1893 that he became a member of church, he then joining the Presbyterian Church at Hopewell, Swan Twp. Until recently he was able to read the newspapers and was well informed on current events. His memory was remarkable. Seven children survive, John of Newcastle, Colo.; Mrs. Rebecca Crothers, Swan Twp; Simon, Garrett; Robert, Avilla; Mrs. Martha Henry, Paris, Tenn.; Mrs. H. R. Veazey, Green Twp; and Mrs. J. S. Conlogue of Kendallville, all of whom with the exception of Mrs. Henry and John, attended the funeral which was held from the M. E. Church in Avilla. Burial, Avilla Cemetery. ^ 10-19-1900
