Stabe Albert, 68, died Monday in the Lutheran Old Peoples Home in Kendallville. He suffered a heart attack Saturday. He served approximately 53 years as a director of the Noble County Savings & Loan Association. Surviving are a brother, Fred, near here, and a sister, Mrs. John Bauman of Kendallville. Rites in the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kendallville. Burial, Lake View Cemetery. ~ 1-31-1957
Stabe Betty Evelyn, 87, of Kendallville, died March 26, 2008 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She owned and operated Betty's Salon of Beauty in Kendallville for many years and was an Avon representative. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church near Corunna and of Kendallville BPW. She was born April 23, 1920 in Kendallville to Donald and Leora Sollenberger. She married Paul Stackhouse, who preceded her in death. She then married Harold F. Stabe in October 1972, and he died Oct. 4, 2007. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jim Hagerty of Kendallville and Sharry and Dave Wiehe of Columbia City; 8 grandchildren and their spouses, Diana and David Ladig, Kevin and Vickie Bortner, Ron and Sandra Bortner, Terry and Elizabeth Bortner, Lana Snyder, Lisa McDaniel, Jennifer Roark and Sara and Shawn Schuller; 18 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Stabe Frederick Lewis, 74, of R. R. 2, Avilla, died Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born July 14, 1885, to John and Julie Stabe. Survivors include the widow, Maude; a son Harold, near here; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Bauman, Auburn; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services in Kendallville Monday. Stabe Harold F, 95, died Oct. 4, 2007 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. A Noble County farmer, he worked at the surveyor's office and was employed with International Harvester and the Auburn Cord Duesenberg factory in Auburn. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was born in DeKalb County on March 24, 1912 to Frederick and Maude (Haynes) Stabe. He married Lorene B. Hissong on Dec. 30, 1953. She died May 6, 1964. He married Betty Sollenberger Stackhouse on Oct. 21, 1972. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jim Hagerty of Kendallville and Sharry and Dave Wible of Columbia City; 8 grandchildren and spouses, Diana and David Ladig, Jennifer and Travis Roark, Sara and Shawn Schuller, Lana Snyder, Lisa McDaniel, Kevin and Vickie Bortner, Ron and Sandra Bortner, Terry and Elizabeth Bortner; 18 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Stabe Maude, 71, R. 2, Avilla, died last Thursday in the Garrett Hospital. She was born in DeKalb County March 2, 1891, the daughter of Edward and Lydia Lehner Haynes. She was a lifelong resident of DeKalb County. Her husband, Frederick, preceded her in death in 1960. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville and the Richland Twp Home Demonstration Club. Surviving is a son, Harold, Avilla; three sisters, Mrs. Elza Jordan, Mrs. Walter Kern and Mrs. Clair Tuttle, all of Garrett; two brothers, G. Heber Haynes of near Garrett and Lloyd Haynes of Winter Haven, Fla.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One grandchild and one great-grandchild also preceded her in death. Stabler Albert "Red", 4218 Colman Av., Fort Wayne, died last Tuesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born May 19, 1900 in Payne, Ohio, the son of Daniel and Louella Bachelor Stabler. On Nov. 1, 1924 he was married to Nadine Smith in Albion. He was a 45-year resident of Ligonier and a retired Joslyn Steel Worker. He was a member of Richville United Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge and the Sheriff’s Posse of Fort Wayne. Surviving are the widow; two sons, Lawrence, Bluffton, and Sanger, Avilla; one foster son, Albert Wayne Anspach, Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren and six foster grandchildren. Stabler DeLoss, 51, of Marion, Ind., had been in failing health four years and heart failure was termed the cause of death. Services were held at the D. O. McComb Funeral Home. He was married to Luella Conrad who formerly resided in LaOtto. She is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Conrad, who now live at the Lamplighter in Kendallville. The widow and a daughter at home survive. ~ 6-6-1974
Stabler Glen W, 60, R. 1, Milford, was stricken at his place of employment, the Maple Leaf Farms near Milford Tuesday and died Funeral will be Friday at Ulrey-Sedgwick Funeral Home, Ligonier. Stabler Harry M, 71, of North Webster, died Sat. in his home. He was born in Payne, Ohio on Oct. 19, 1897 to Samuel and Mary Ann (Birkhold) Stabler. He married Esther White on Oct. 6, 1920. She preceded him in death. He was a retired businessman and had resided in North Webster for the past 20 years. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Survivors include 2 sons, Samuel of Roanoke, Theodore of Fort Wayne; one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Harriett) Rupprecht of North Webster; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ira, Portland, and Charles of Roanoke; 2 sisters, Mrs. Paul (Bessie) Miller and Mrs. William (Lila) Breamer, New Haven. Stabler Nora "Nadine", 80, Bluffton, died June 18 at her home in Bluffton. She was born March 16, 1905, the daughter of Sanger and Idris (Wright) Smith. She married Albert Stabler Nov. 1, 1924 in Albion. He died in 1970. She formerly lived in Ligonier and Fort Wayne before moving to Bluffton a year ago. Surviving are two sons, Sanger of Avilla, Lawrence of Bluffton; a foster son, Albert Anspach of Fort Wayne; a sister, Cecil Leslie of Ligonier; 7 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Stabler Sanger, 54, died January 22 in his home in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was born March 30, 1943 to Albert and Nora Nadine (Smith) Stabler. He was a retired iron worker. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Fawn Stabler of Columbia City, Michelle Mosley of Albion, Tracey March of Garrett and Melanie Davis of Murfreesboro; a brother, Lawrence of Bluffton; 2 sons-in-law, Scott Mosley of Albion and Don March of Garrett; and 7 grandchildren. Stackhouse, John H., 75, died Thursday in Cameron Memorial Hospital, Angola. He was retired from Moore Business Forms in Angola. He lived at RR4, Angola. Born Sep 26, 1914 in Corunna he was the son of Glenn and Hazel (Bordner) Stackhouse. Survivors include his wife, Lois; 1 son Lee of Fort Wayne; 2 daughters, Carol of Brownsville, TX and Mitzi Forrester of Angola; 4 brothers, Ralph & Dallas both of Corunna, Ora of Pleasant Lake and William of Angola; 1 sister Lois Wright of Orland, IN; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Stackhouse Maude, who lived with her sisters, Mrs. Lester (Helen) Whitson and Mrs. Dorothy DeWitt at 110 Harding St., Kendallville, died Friday in McCray Hospital from a heart condition. She was born in Noble County to John W. and Mary Ellen (Miller) Childs and was raised in the Kendallville area and graduated from Kendallville High School. She married Charles Stackhouse in Albion Aug. 21, 1930. He died Dec. 24, 1963. She lived in Chicago, Ill., and Lovelock, Nev., before moving back to Kendallville to live in 1971. Stacy Winfred, 64, of Kendallville, died Feb. 17, 2009 at Parkview Noble Hospital. He was a processor with Essex Wire in Kendallville and had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was born in Hindman, Ky., on April 6, 1944 to Ishmael and Sirena (Miller) Stacy. He married Bonetta Sells on April 18, 2004 in Wolcottville. She worked as a file clerk for the Meat Cutters Union, as a clerk in grocery stores, and did factory work while living in Chicago. She was born March 20, 1939, in Chicago to Edward A. and Anna (Machek) Stadick. Surviving are a sister, Emily J. Napier of Rome City; 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law, Franklin J. Stadtfeld Ralph L, 76, died July 9, 2007 at his home near Albion. He was born July 16, 1930 in Remus, Mich. to Lawrence and Dorothy (Merritt) Stadtfeld. He married Mary E. Campbell on May 3, 1958 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avilla. He retired in 1993 as a machinist at Dana Corp. in Auburn. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, DeLane and Val Parker of Albion and Dawn Mariage; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Cheryl Stadtfeld of Kendallville and Harold and Melissa Stadtfeld of North Vernon; 3 sisters, Rosemary Clingerman of Holt, Mich., Elaine Ernst and John Winnicki of Buxton, N.C. and Kathy and Delanuy Delaney of Avondale Estates, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Harold Campbell of Albion; and 3 sisters-in-law, Helen Campbell of Auburn, Carole Campbell of Arco, Idaho, and Maxine Campbell of Paullina, Iowa; and grandchildren, Mark and Dee Eggering, Sherman and Jamie Howard, Benjamin Parker, Jonathan and Koleton Teders, and Bryson, Zachery, Marissa, Grace, Xavier, Caleb and Talon Stadtfeld. Stafford Evelyn D, 84, of Albion, died May 14, 2005 at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. She retired in 1991 as an office worker at Group Dekko. She was born Aug. 29, 1920 in Garrett to George E. and Eve H. (Huff) Mayo. On Aug. 30, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio, she married James E. Stafford. He is deceased. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Robert Johnson of Kinston, N.C., and Lynda and John Moran of Saltville, Va.; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, April and Paul Howard, Carol and Douglas Taylor and Robert Johnson II; and 3 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Anna Howard and Bodie Taylor. Stafford Flossie F, 92, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Catherine) Anderson of Avilla. She was born in Auburn May 8, 1899 and married Fred Stafford, who died in April 1964. She previously lived at Dickman’s Mobile Home Court in Auburn. Other survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Robert Muhn, Royal Oaks, Mich.; two sisters, Mary Shawver, Detroit, Mich., and Gladys Tenney, California; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Stafford Fred, 75, father of Mrs. Leroy Anderson, Avilla, died Monday in Garrett Hospital. Death was attributed to complications. A lifelong resident of DeKalb County, he was born October 7, 1888 in Jackson Twp, son of the late Emanuel and Frances Stafford, and was married March 5, 1909 to Flossie Hough, who survives. He was a retired employee of the Northern Indiana Fuel & Light Company and a charter member of the Auburn Community Grange. Surviving in addition to the wife and daughter are a son Robert, of New Haven; a daughter, Candice Muhn, formerly of Avilla and now residing in Royal Oak, Mich.; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Stafford James V, 68, 226 Spring Beach Road, Rome City, died today at his home. He was born Aug. 12, 1904 in Wayne County, W. Va., to Joseph and Stella (Smith) Stafford. He married Gladys Wright in 1950. He moved to Rome City in 1969 after he retired as a mold maker for Thatcher Glass Co., Saugus, Calif. He was a member of Central Christian Church, Huntington, W.Va., and the American Flint & Glass Workers Union No. 139. Surviving are the wife; a son, J. W., Saugus, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. C. L. Hunter, Ashland, Ky.; and 2 grandchildren. A son, William H., preceded him in death. Services are Thursday in Hite Funeral Home. The body will then be taken to Fort Wayne for cremation. + 7-?-1972

Stage, Leesburg druggist. She is survived by twin daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Burr of North Manchester and Mrs. Stacey Miller of the home; a brother Rollin Blackman of near Albion; 4 grandchildren. Stage Eleanor L, 79, died Sunday in Goshen Hospital. She was born October 10, 1910 in Ligonier, the daughter of Charles and Edith (Cochran) Stage. A lifetime Ligonier resident, she was a correspondent for the Advance-Leader and News-Sun and an employee of Mad Hatter Antique Store in Ligonier. She was a member of United Methodist Church. Stage George Clinton, 71, died yesterday while plowing in the garden on his farm northeast of Ligonier in Perry Twp. Death was due to a heart attack. Soon after going to the garden, his wife noticed the mule standing in the garden but did not see her husband. Going to the garden she found him lying on the ground at the handles of the plow. He was born Aug. 3, 1861 in Wells County, Ind. but had resided practically all of his life in the Ligonier community. He had always engaged in farming. Stage Glen T, 37, of Ligonier, whose right arm was mangled in a corn shredder 10 days ago and amputated at Lakeside Hospital, died Jan. 18 as a result of the injury. Stage Rollie E, 79, a Noble County native of the Ligonier area, died March 18 in the VA Hospital at Fort Wayne. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and a member of the American Legion and Eagles Lodge. The only survivor is a cousin, Mrs. Lillie Plank of Ligonier. Stage Susie, 63, native of Wawaka, died at her home 3 miles northwest of there Friday from complications. Her husband, Frank, died some years ago. She is survived by the son, Leo, with whom she made her home. Funeral Sunday at the home. Burial, Salem Cemetery. + 8-?-1935
Stage Theron D died Oct. 23 on the Hawpatch, aged 51 years, 10 months and 2 days. He was born Dec. 23, 1841 and spent his whole life on the farm where he was born. He leaves 6 brothers, a wife and one son to mourn. Contracting a cold while in attendance at the World’s Fair it terminated in pneumonia from which he died. Funeral at the home on Oct. 25. Staggs Norma D, 59, of Cromwell, died Sunday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born May 1, 1938 in Noble County to William and Juanita (Beckner) Grimes. A lifetime Noble County resident, she worked at BRC Rubber Group, Ligonier, for more than 20 years. She was a member of The Rock Church. Surviving are 4 sons, Randy Nicodemus, Scott and Doug Staggs of Cromwell, and Michael Staggs of Waynesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Raymond Grimes of Elkhart; 3 sisters, Nell Hipshire of Cromwell, Dora Kelly of Elkhart, and Helen Ley of Avilla; and 4 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and one sister. Funeral Wednesday in Ulrey-Renner Funeral Home. Burial, Sparta Cemetery. + 6-15-1997
Stahl Anna
(Grieling), another of Avilla’s residents died last Saturday. She has been in poor health for some time and on Friday suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which she did not rally. Death came Saturday. She was born in Lehigh Twp, Northampton County, Pa., September 24, 1815 and died in Avilla, October 9, 1897, aged 82 years and 15 days. She married John Stahl of Wooster, Ohio, December 4, 1834. They had eleven children, eight of whom with the husband and father, preceded her in death. Her living descendants comprise three children, 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She came to Indiana in 1852 and since that time has resided at or near Avilla. In 1870 she united with the Lutheran Church, remaining a member thereof until 1892, when she joined the Evangelical Association. The funeral services were at the Evangelical Church Monday. Stahl Beverly G, 79, of Kendallville, died June 27, 2010 at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville. She worked for Dana Corp. in Churubusco for 25 years, retiring in Oct. 1990. She was born in Newville, Ind. on Sept. 30, 1930 to Ernest and Edna (Harter) Nelson. She was married to Paul Stahl until his death in 1986. Survivors include 4 daughters, Gloria Yarde of Tacoma, Wash., Mary Yarde of Butler, Sheryl Yarde of Ohio and Patricia and Richard Barnes of Bristol; 2 sons, Larry and Cindy Yarde of Rockwood, Tenn., and David Brumbaugh of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one sister, Betty Pring of Tacoma, Wash. She was also preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Patrick and Heather; one sister and 2 brothers. No funeral or burial. ^ 6-29-2010
Stahl, Byron L. "Barney"”, 73 of R 3 LaGrange, died Sunday in Sturgis Hospital, Sturgis, MI. He was born Oct 12, 1915 in Fairview, MI the son of Charles W and Esther (Reber) Stahl. On Dec 27, 1937 in Topeka, he married Mary Cathryn Speicher, who survives. Mr. Stahl had lived in Detroit, MI until moving to LaGrange Co in 1946. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Michael (Mary Ellen) Getzmiller of Lansing, MI and Mrs. Milton (Martha) Dexter of LaGrange; 2 sisters Priscilla Harrison of Standish, MI and Alene Rabold of Waycross, GA; two brothers, Willis Stahl of West Unity, OH and Carl Stahl of St. Claire Shores, MI; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Stahl Elias was born in Union County, Pa., February 10, 1816. He was married in Clinton County, that state, August 15, 1841, to Mary Frank, who died September 4, 1889. They had eleven children, of whom eight are yet living. Mr. and Mrs. Stahl came to Indiana in 1865, and with the exception of about two years, lived in Noble County continuously until their deaths. Mr. Stahl was an honest, industrious, warm-hearted citizen. He has been in precarious health for several months and died at the age of 75 years, 3 months, 13 days. Stahl Imo B, 59, 342 N. State St., died Friday in McCray Hospital from a heart condition. Born March 30, 1914 in Sedan, Ind., she was the daughter of George and Emma (Treesh) Casselman. She lived in Kendallville since 1904, moving from Corunna. She married Orville F. Stahl May 3, 1934 in Auburn and was employed 23 years at the V&A Restaurant in Kendallville. Surviving are the husband; 4 sons, Orville Jr., South Bend, Syrene, Corunna, Gerald, Dorchester, Mass., and Danny, Kendallville; a daughter, Mrs. Wade (Sally) Cooper, Syracuse; a sister, Mrs. Gorden (Beulah) Antrup, Kendallville; and 15 grandchildren. Stahl John, a member of the Fort Wayne bar, died Saturday at his residence in that city. He was born in Juniata County, Pa. in Oct. 1837, the son of John and Annie Stahl. He lived in the western part of that state until about 15 years of age when he moved to Avilla, Ind. Until 23 years of age he worked on a farm; he then attended the Fort Wayne High School. He was a teacher and in turn principal of the Auburn, Waterloo and Decatur Schools. While at Waterloo he studied medicine with Dr. Stowe and about that time united with the Presbyterian Church. In 1869 he graduated from the law department of the Michigan University and was one of the best scholars in his class. For 2 years he practiced law with Judge Wildman of Kendallville. In May 1872 he was married to Sarah Hillegass and shortly after he moved to this city and began practicing with his brother-in-law, J. D. Hillegass. Stahl Paul E, 46, died Saturday in his rural Avilla home. He had been a resident here for 18 years and was employed with Don’s Service Station in Garrett. On August 30, 1916 in Nappanee she married Roy Stahly, who died in 1986. A retired school teacher, she had lived in the Ligonier area since 1922. She was a member of the Wawaka Church of the Brethren. On July 27, 1940 in Wawaka he married Doris Knepper. A lifetime area resident, he retired as a Standard Oil distributor in Ligonier after 29 years. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Ligonier Presbyterian Church, Elks Club and West Noble American Legion Post. He retired from farming after 30 years and was employed by Weaver’s Hardware and Lyon & Greenleaf Mill, Ligonier and as custodian at the Ligonier Library. He was a member of Ligonier Presbyterian Church. He died May 23, 1963. She then married John Stahly on April 5, 1980. Stair Martha A (Bracken) was born Dec. 18, 1830 in Wayne County, Ohio, and died in Kendallville Jan. 19, 1901, aged 70 years, 1 month and 1 day. She was married to Daniel Stair Jan. 8, 1852 in Wooster, Ohio. They resided near there until 1856 when they moved to Noble County, where they have since resided. A husband and six children survive, Sidney V. of Chicago, Mrs. Etha Baker, Frank E. and Mrs. Ida Finley, who reside near the old home, Mrs. Minnie L. On Dec. 25, 1915 in Kendallville she married B. Floyd Stalcup, who preceded her in death. She returned to Kendallville from New York in 1949 where she had been a teacher and librarian. She was a member of Naples Church of Christ. She was born April 16, 1933 to Marion and Ida Shroyer and was a 1951 graduate of Columbia City High School. She married Jack C. Stalf in 1951. Stallman Carl Frederick Jr, 75, Kendallville physician, died September 10, 1994 in Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He suffered an apparent heart attack while playing tennis at Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne. He was born in Steuben County on March 22, 1919 to Carl Frederick and Evelyn Lucille (Myers) Stallman. On June 14, 1948 near Salem Center he married Margaret Jean Hughes, who died December 4, 1965. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1937 and from Manchester College in 1941. He taught school briefly in Huntertown before entering the U.S. Army where he was a tank commander in the South Pacific during WW II. He earned a Silver Star. In 1951 he graduated from Indiana University of Medicine and in 1952 moved to Kendallville. He was a member of the American, Indiana, and Noble County Medical Associations. Born in VanBuren Twp in LaGrange County on Feb. 26, 1928, she was the daughter of Wayne and Ellen Sprankle Hughes of Hudson. She was married to Dr. Stallman on June 14, 1948. She had lived in Kendallville since 1952, coming from Muncie. She was a graduate of Ball State Teachers College and the Salem Center High School. She was a member of the First Christian Church and OES. Besides her husband and parents, survivors include one son, Don F., at home; two brothers, John Hughes, Hudson, and Dan Hughes, a senior at Purdue University in Lafayette. Stangland Benjamin F, 92, native Noble County, mechanical engineer who designed and installed ventilating plants in many of New York’s large buildings, died yesterday at his home at Morton. N.Y. At the time of the Chicago fire in 1871 he was sales engineer for Forsythe Scale Co. and saved the firm’s records from the flames by pushing them round on a hand truck all night keeping a step ahead of the flames. He was an authority on the ventilating of drying ovens for fruit products. In 1876 he developed the practice of counting small parts of watches by weighing them on a delicate scale, which is continued to this day. + 1940

Stangland Edward "Roy", 41, was killed Saturday when his tank truck loaded with fuel oil went off U.S. 24 near Roanoke, struck a utility pole and tipped over. Funeral was this afternoon in Hollingsworth Chapel. Burial, Christian Chapel Cemetery. He was born in Noble County on Feb. 17, 1926, a son of Ethan and Edith Kiester Stangland. He was a former distributor for the Standard Oil Co. in Columbia City. He had been with the Gulf Oil Co. in Huntington for 8 ½ years. He was a member of the Christian Chapel at Merriam. Stangland Ethan, 88, of R. 2, Albion, died Tuesday in Kinney Health Care Center, Ligonier. Born November 28, 1901 in Noble County, he was the son of Donald and Maggie (Kitt) Stangland. On February 12, 1924 he married Edith E. Kiester. She died July 19, 1985. A lifetime Noble Twp resident, he lived most of his life on a farm near Merriam. He was a 1920 graduate of Wolf Lake High School and worked for Morsches Builders Mart in Columbia City and farmed. He was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel. Stangland Eunice, 67, R. 2, Albion, died Wednesday at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne as a result of injuries sustained in a 2-vehicle mishap 7 miles south of Albion Wednesday. Gerald C. Adams disregarded a stop sign and struck the vehicle she and her husband were in. She was born July 25, 1912 in Noble County where she lived all her life in the Wolf Lake and Stringtown area. She was the daughter of Lee M. and Blanche (Hindman) Kiester. She married Marlo Stangland Sept. 27, 1929. Stangland Frances E, 96, of Albion, died Aug. 4, 2011 in her rsidence. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1932. She was a teachers' aide and worked in the cafeteria at Wolf Lake School. She was a member of the Burr Oak Baptist Church. She was born Jan 18, 1915 in Noble County to Marshall and Frances (Stout) Young. On Nov. 15, 1935 in Wolf Lake she married Omar Stangland. He died Aug. 31, 1997. Stangland Jay P, 86, of Albion, died Saturday in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born October 30, 1905 in Noble County to Omar and Fannie (Wilkins) Stangland. On July 17, 1929 in Warsaw, he married Mary Starkey. A lifetime area resident, he was a 1924 graduate of Wolf Lake High School. A retired farmer, he had served on the Central Noble school board, as Noble Twp trustee, and was on the Noble County Co-op board of directors for 25 years. He was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel and Gideons International. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Sue Johnson of Albion; 2 sons, Don and Rex of Albion; a sister, Nora McNab Mayse of Portland, Ore.; 2 brothers, Marlo of Columbia City and Omar of Albion; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Stangland Marlo Glenn, 85, died Monday in Miller's Merry Manor Columbia City. He was born June 10, 1911 in Noble Twp, Noble County to Omar and Fannie (Wilkins) Stangland. On September 27, 1929 he married Eunice E. Kiester. She was killed in an auto accident October 3, 1979. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School and worked on the family farm. He suffered a stroke in March 1980. Stangland Mary A, 91, died Sunday in D&D Nursing Home in Ligonier. She was born in Noble Twp, Noble County. She married Jay Stangland, who died in 1992. A teacher for 40 years, she taught in Wolf Lake, Kimmell and Cromwell schools and was principal at the Kimmell school. She was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel, Retired Teachers Association and Gideons Auxiliary. Stangland Omar J, 71, died with a crushed chest Wednesday. He was attacked by a bull at his home Monday while he and his sons were caring for their dairy cattle herd. He lived at Burr Oak about 1 ½ miles southwest of Albion In Noble Twp. He was a native of that community, being the son of a pioneer family. He was born Aug. 31, 1869, the son of Tallock A. and Elizabeth Abrams Stangland, and died April 23, 1941. There were ten children in the family. The 3 sisters and 3 brothers who survive are Frank E. of Madras, Ore., Donald of Albion, James of Columbia City, Mrs. Grace Kitt of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Jessie Thompson and Mrs. Walter Johnson of Albion. In 1903 he was married to Fannie E. Wilkins and moved to a farm near Burr Oak where their family of eight children were born and raised. They are Roscoe C. of Kokomo, Mrs. Oscar Narveson of Mt. Horeb, Wis., Mrs. Max Wolfe of Kimmell, Jay P., Tallock A., Marlo G., Omar J. Jr. of Albion, and Nora attending college. There are 10 grandchildren. Stangland Omar J, 83, former Noble County commissioner, died Sunday in University Park Nursing Center in Fort Wayne. He was born in Noble County on November 4, 1913 to Omar and Fannie (Wilkins) Stangland. On November 15, 1935 in Wolf Lake he married Frances Young. A 1932 graduate of Wolf Lake High School, he attended Purdue University. He helped establish the EMS in the county, initiated a bridge replacement program and worked toward the opening of a county landfill. He served with the Neopolitan Egg Auction, the Soil Conservation Service and Noble County Extension Board and was a member of Burr Oak Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Louise Stangland of Albion; a sister, Nora Drescher of Portland, Ore.; and 2 grandchildren, Erick and Kristin Stangland. On June 12, 1949 at Wolf Lake he married Helen Erdly. A resident of Noble County most of his life, he had lived several years in the Chicago-Wheaton, Ill. area. He was a 1942 graduate of Wolf Lake High School and attended Purdue University, Grace College and Moody Bible Institute. He was a WW II U. S. Air Force flight instructor, a vice president and trust officer of Churubusco State Bank, and a member of Merriam Christian Chapel. Stangland Roscoe, 87, of Goshen and Bradenton, Fla., died January 24, 1992 from injuries sustained in a one-car accident north of Tampa, Fla. He was born May 27, 1904 in Noble County and married Dorothy Hays on May 8, 1925 in Centreville, Mich. He was a former county extension agent in Goshen and Howard County; a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ, Alpha Gamma Rho at Purdue University; a 50-year Kiwanis member; and a manager of the Indiana State Fair for 5 years. Stangland Tallock died at his home in Noble Twp April 10, 1881 from rheumatism. Born in Orleans County, N.Y., Feb. 14, 1832, he came with his parents to Indiana in 1839. The father and mother died, leaving a large family of young and helpless children. Several of them, including Tallock, were taken by relatives to New York state. He remained there until a young man, then returned to the old farm in Noble Twp. He followed teaching during the winters and labored on his land the rest of the time. In April 1861 he married Elizabeth Abrams, daughter of James Abrams, one of the early pioneers of Noble County. She is still living on the farm with their 8 children. Stangland Tallock A, 77, a native of Noble County and 1927 graduate of Wolf Lake High School, died March 8, 1986 at Holy Cross Parkview Hospital in Plymouth. He was born to Omar and Fannie Wilkins Stangland on their farm in Noble Twp and after graduating from high school engaged in general farming. He married Mary Bryan in 1935 and they operated the Wolf Lake IGA Store for 25 years. He retired in 1963 after suffering a stroke, and moved to Carlsbad, Calif., and then briefly in Arizona before moving to Plymouth, Ind. 6 years ago. He was affiliated with Merriam Christian Chapel, a former member of the Wolf Lake Volunteer Fire Department and helped found the Wolf Lake Little League baseball program. Surviving are 2 sons, Bill B., Santa Ana, Calif., and Thomas A., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Johanna) Perry of Walkerton; 7 grandchildren and one great-grandson; 4 brothers, Roscoe of Fla., Jay, Omar and Marlo of rural Albion; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ada Narveson of Mt. Stanley Guy was born in Green Twp near Albion Sept. 19, 1884, the son of Cyrus and Anna Katherine (Singrey) Stanley, and died in a hospital in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Feb. 13, 1924. He was 39 years, 4 months and 24 days of age. About 10 days before his death he became ill with pneumonia. He was holding a responsible position with a large manufacturing company in Niagara Falls. Stanley Henry C died Saturday at his farm home in Green Twp. He was a native of Clermont County, Ohio, where he was born January 22, 1818, and was therefore somewhat over 80 years of age. He was married in 1839 to Miss Hanna L. Hunt, who died two years later. In 1847 he married Sophronia Beeson who, with five sons and two daughters, survive him. In 1849 he settled in Green Twp on the farm on which he died. He was prominent in the political and business circles of Noble County. Stanley Howard ‘‘Sonny’, 73, died March 20, 2012, at his home in Brimfield. He was born in Caretta, West Virginia April 17, 1938, to Zeb and Ollie (Hicks) Stanley. He first married Virginia R. “Ginger” Antrup on June 6, 1958. She died December 10, 1989. Two years later he married Connie Sue Wells on October 20, 1990, in Lisbon. He was the pastor for many years at the True Church of God In Jesus’ Name in Lisbon. He owned Stanley Sanitation from 1976-1991. He was a foundry worker and was employed with Lane Foundry, Kendallville Foundry and Mahoney Foundry. The McDonald’s restaurant in Kendallville was the last place he worked.  Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Howie Stanley of Brimfield, Mick Stanley of Syracuse and Rocky and Vicky Stanley of South Whitley; a daughter, Tracey and Norman Hunt of Fort Wayne; 6 grandchildren, Danielle and Chad Waters; Justin and Kendra Stanley; Skye Stanley; Lindsey Hunt, Tyquon Hunt, and Keon Hunt all of Indianapolis; 7 great-grandchildren, Blake, Kiera, Keagon, Kalista, J.P., Crystal, and Ka’mya. Stanley Kenneth L, 61, a Big Lake resident, died July 10 at McCray Hospital. He was born Dec. 3, 1923 in Marion, a son of Kenneth Cecil and Fern Clifton Stanley. He was raised in Marion and was employed by the Fisher Body Co., RCA, and Marion Water Treatment Plant. On Oct. 13, 1945, he was married to Deloris King. They lived in Marion until 1964 when they moved to Columbia City where he was employed by the city and Holmes Lumber Co. For the past 8 years he was employed by Phillips Industries in Albion. His wife died Sept. 17, 1974. On Dec. 23, 1983 he was married to Alta L. Rickey. They first lived in Albion and then moved to Big Lake. He was a member of Albion Eagles Lodge. Stanley Marie K, daughter of Will and Martha Reyburn, was born in Albany, Ia. on March 10, 1858; died at Albion Aug. 15, 1926, aged 68 years 5 months and 5 days. When 3 years of age she moved with her parents to Putnam County, Mo. In 1873 she married B. K. Sims. They had 5 children, Edith Davis of Clinton, Mo., Mattie Washburn of Detroit, Mich., Harry and Forrest, both of whom have died. Holly B. Sims died Dec. 24, 1909. On May 7, 1913 she married Cyrus H. Stanley Martha, 76, 302 W. Jefferson St., Albion, died Tuesday (d.5-8-1979) in DeKalb County Hospital. She was born Aug. 25, 1902 in Noble Twp of Noble County to F. E. and Alma (Kimmell) Seymoure. Her husband, Ralph R. Stanley, preceded her in death in 1943. He was superintendent of Noble County Schools and principal of Wolf Lake High School. Stanley Matilda, 74, died Saturday at the home of her son Noah Williams, her death being due to complication of diseases incident to old age. She was a widow for several years during which time she lived with her children, eight of whom survive her. Stansbury, J.W. H.., one of Ligonier’s oldest and best-known citizens, died at his home in this city on Wednesday, Apr 17, aged 83 years. He had been a resident here for more than half a century, coming from Ohio when a young man. He resided on a farm east of the city for a number of years but had been living in Ligonier for many years. He was an upright citizen, a man of honesty and integrity and always stood for all that was best in life. Some years ago he became blind on account of cataract, but recovered his sight through a surgical operation. He leaves to mourn a widow, one son, J. W. Stansbury of North Dakota, one daughter in Illinois and one in Michigan, besides other relatives. His funeral occurred on Saturday, from his late residence in the north part of the city. He came to Noble County with his father in 1836 and settled in Wayne Twp, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was born in Wayne County, N.Y., Feb. 18, 1828. He married Lucinda Potter Dec. 25, 1850, who with 2 children are left behind. He was for 26 years a member of the M. E. Church. Stanton Lucinda P nee Potter was born March 20, 1831 in Onondaga County. N. Y. After a brief residence in Ohio, she, at 12 years of age, came with her parents to Indiana. Her father purchased what is now known as the Day farm in Wayne Twp where she resided until her marriage with Addison B. Stanton Dec. 25, 1850. Some months later they settled on the farm in Wayne Twp where she resided until about 3 years since. A log cabin was erected in the forest, cutting away the timber for that purpose. They had 2 sons and one daughter, Homer V., who died at the age of one; D. Addie Devoe, with whom she has spent the three closing years of her life; and Seymour S., now and for many years a minister in the Indiana conference of Methodist Protestant Church. In 1866 she united with the M. P. Church at Perseverance. She died April 25, aged 66 years 1 month and 5 days. She leaves the son, daughter, their companions, 7 grandchildren. Stark Henry was born in Lancaster County, Penn. Jan. 21, 1842 and died April 15, aged 56 years 3 months and 15 days. He moved to this state about one year ago, working at his trade, shoemaking and cobbling whenever health would permit. His wife died 11 years ago leaving him with 6 children. One son and one brother who live near Kendallville were the only relatives present, the other children being in Ohio. Stark Hobart H, 83, of R. 1, Kimmell, died Monday in Alfran Nursing Home, Columbia City. Born Oct. 30, 1896 in Noble County, he was the son of Samuel and Mary (Hart) Stark. Stark Richard H, 85, of Kendallville, died Oct. 267, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Sandusky, Ohio on May 8, 1924 to Richard and Edna (Coffman) Stark. He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1942 and served in the Merchant Marines during WW II. He married Ethel Smith on May 18, 1946 in Sandusy and she died Aug. 167, 1992. He married Betty Jenkins on Sept. 23, 1999 and she died July 21, 2006. He was employed with Ford Motor Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1986. Stark Sharon L, 80, of Kendallville, died February 1, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Born March 19, 1930, to Clare and Gwen (Freeman) Aldrich, Sharon graduated from Kendallville High School in 1948. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, and graduated from Ball State University in 1952. She taught elementary school for seven years in Fort Wayne, and in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona. She married Kenneth J. Stark, of Tucson, on June 28, 1958. They owned several businesses, including Taylor’s Shoe Store, the Jean Shop, and Baskin-Robbins ice cream store, until retirement in 1991. She is survived by her husband, a son and daughter-in-law, John and Lynn Stark, of Fredericksburg, VA, grandchildren Erika and Ben, and by son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Ann Stark of Peoria, IL, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Caroline and Stephanie. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Sarah Aldrich Stark. She was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville A memorial service will be held February 12, 2011 in Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville. Starkey Alice "Loena", 72, died August 31, 1989 in Whitley County Hospital. She was born in Noble County to Guy and Martha Winebrenner Kesling. In 1937 she married Roy Starkey, who died in 1974. A lifetime Wolf Lake area resident, she was a homemaker and member of the Wolf Lake Baptist Church. Starkey Arthur B, son of Frederick E. and Lucretia Mullen Starkey, was born Jan. 11, 1849. He was a farmer and spent practically all his life on the farm where he was born and where also he died. June 11, 1867 he married Sarah A. Moore. They had five children, of whom George F. died in infancy. The surviving ones are Flora, Homer, Lewis and Daniel. Mr. and Mrs. Starkey also reared from infancy their niece, Carrie Moore. These with their companions, together with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren remain. His wife preceded him in death Nov. 3, 1903. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about 7 weeks ago and gradually grew worse until death came Jan. 5, 1925, aged 75 years, 11 months and 25 days. + 1-?-1925
Starkey Arthur L was born in Noble County just one mile and a half west of Wolf Lake on Oct. 5, 1875. He lived in this vicinity until 1912 when he moved to Pennsylvania. He was active in the Wolf Lake Baptist Church until he moved from this community. In Pa., he was an active member of the Baptist Church at Clearfield. On June 29, 1895, Jennie Banta became his wife, and they had one son. After living in the Ormas community for a time they moved to Clearfield, Pa. Several weeks ago he became ill with pneumonia which caused his death Feb. 21, 1942. Starkey James Luckey, son of Homer and Jennie Luckey Starkey, was born July 16, 1903 and died Aug. 6, 1929, aged 26 years, one month. He married Elizabeth Stangland on May 21, 1927. He has been a teacher in the Noble County schools for a number of years and at the time of his death was principal elect of the Kimmell schools. He was an active member of the Wolf Lake Baptist Church and the superintendent of its Sunday School. Starkey John Homer, 83, (b. 5-9-1873) died February 19 in the Luckey Hospital where he had been taken four days ago from his home two miles west of Wolf Lake. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Starkey Joseph Arthur, 72, Wolf Lake, died Friday at Halifax District Hospital, Daytona Beach, Fla. He suffered a stroke March 13. A retired school teacher, he was born in Washington Twp, Feb. 11, 1899, the son of John Homer and Mary Jane (Luckey) Starkey. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1917, received his Bachelor of Science degree from Manchester College and also attended Ball State and Indiana Universities. He taught school 45 years, retiring in 1963. He spent winters in Florida since 1963. He married Lena Smith Aug. 26, 1922. She survives, along with a son, Mirwood, Muncie; and five daughters, Mrs. Robert P. Adams, Muncie, Mrs. William Cowan, Shepherdsville, Ky., Mrs. Phillip Tobey, Portage, Mrs. Fred Larson, Hobart, and Mrs. Cal Hile, Kimmell; 22 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Jay Stangland, Albion. Starkey Lena S, 105, of Wolf Lake, died March 4, 2005 at Parkview Whitley Hospital. She taught school for one year at Little Lake School and had been a stenographer at Wayne Tank & Pump and an administrative secretary at Purdue University. During WW II she worked at Kingsbury Ordnance Plant and later was a bookkeeper for Gary Drapery. She was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel, serving as organist and pianist many years. She had been a member of Noble County Farm Bureau. She was born Feb. 10, 1900 in Noble County to William H. and Lydia Irene (Frederick) Smith. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School and Anthony Wayne Institute. On Aug. 26, 1922 she married Joseph Arthur Starkey. He died March 26, 1971. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Mirwood and Lois Starkey of Mooreland; 5 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Phil Adams Goodrich of Wolf Lake, Jane Cowan of Shepherdsville, Ky., Joan Tobey of Wolf Lake, Nancy and Fred Larson of Hobart, and Shirley Hile of Kimmell; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild. Starkey Nora "Blanche", 105, Noble county’s oldest native, died Tuesday in Goshen Hospital. She was born June 18, 1880 in a brick farm house near Wolf Lake, the daughter of Scott and Rebecca (Cramer) Galloway who had come to Noble County from Pennsylvania in a covered wagon. A graduate of an Angola college, she worked in one-room school houses as a teacher in Washington Twp before moving to a four-room school in Wolf Lake. In 1904 she married fellow educator Daniel J. Starkey and gave up teaching. He died in 1954. In 1910 the Starkeys opened a general store in Wolf Lake. The following year they traded the store for a Shipshewana farm. The couple later lived in Corunna and Kendallville but lived most of their lives in the Wolf Lake area. She was a member of the Wolf Lake Baptist Church and attended Easter services less than two weeks ago. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Loena Starkey, Albion; a sister, Vera Wilkins, Goshen; 10 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Starkey Roy W, 57, R. 4, Albion, died Thursday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born May 23, 1916 in Clearfield, Pa., to Daniel and Blanche (Galloway) Starkey. He married Loena Egolf March 21, 1936. A lifetime resident of the area and owner of a farm near Wolf Lake since 1941, he was an employee of Weatherhead in Columbia City 13 years. He was a charter member of the Wolf Lake Fire Department, present director of the Noble County Civil Defense and a member of the Wolf Lake Lions Club. Surviving are his wife; six daughters, Mrs. Harry (Shirley) Beard, Goshen, Mrs. Thomas (Sharon) Fear, and Mrs. John (Melba) Moorhouse, R. 4, Albion, Mrs. Dale (Lois) Craig, Pierceton, Mrs. Randy (Lana) Emerick, Kendallville, and Miss Jane at home; four sons, Roy, John and Russell, all of R. 4, Albion, and David, R. 7, Columbia City; 26 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Syracuse. Starmer Charles, 68, died this morning at Lakeside Hospital from injuries sustained last Saturday in an automobile collision west of the city on U. S. 6. He had been a resident of this city nearly 25 years and was employed at the McCray and Flint & Walling factories. He was born March 18, 1865 in Morrow County, Ohio, the son of Eli and Martha Starmer. He was first married in 1888 with Emma Craven who died in 1924. They had 3 children. March 6, 1926 he married Martha Ellen Bixler. He was a member of the local Presbyterian Church.
