Spencer Clara, born in Darke County, Ohio, died at Wolf Lake, Sept. 6, 1919, 87 years and 5 days. She was the second child born to Stedman and Sophronia Gray and came with her parents to Indiana in the spring of 1835, settling at Port Mitchell. This was before Noble County was organized. She was too young to have but a glimmering recollection of the incidents of removal, which was through swamps and forests, but she could remember well the native Indians who numbered perhaps thirty to one white man. The country at that time was almost an unbroken forest with an abundant supply of wild game, and not infrequently a pack of growling wolves. The neighbors were few and far between.
