Smolek Arthur F, 92, of Albion, died April 5, 2005 at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. A farmer and a truck driver for more than 60 years, he retired from Hudson Trucking in 1982. He was a member of Albion Eagles Lodge and Kendallville Moose. He was born Feb. 28, 1913 in Warsaw to James and Agnes (Minarik) Smolek. On Jan. 26, 1946 in Noble County he married Jacquelyn Summers. She died Jan. 14, 2004. Surviving are 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Brook and Brenda and Brad and Jerra of Albion, and Bart and April of Wawaka; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Julie Neuhouser of Albion and Marna and Ron Morris of Churubusco; a brother, Gene of Kendallville; a sister, Irene Burgoon of Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Smolek Barton Lee, 49, of Albion, died Aug. 1, 2008 in Fort Wayne. A truck driver, he had worked for JAT for 6 years. A graduate of Central Noble High School, he was a member of New Heights Church. He was born June 3, 1959 in Kendallville to Arthur and Jacquelyn (Summers) Smolek. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Sabrina Smolek; a daughter, Lisa Smolek; 4 grandchildren, Cheyanne, Jordan, Sebastian and Colton Smolek; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Brook and Brenda and Bradley and Jerra Smolek; and 2 sisters, Julie Neuhouser and Marna Morris. Smolek Carma L, 14, R. 1, Corunna, died Monday of injuries received in a one-car accident south of Fairfield Center. Funeral Thursday at Cedar Lake Church of Christ. She was a passenger in a car driven by her sister, Debbie 16, when it went out of control as the driver attempted to pass a school bus on DeKalb CR 13. She was born in Kendallville May 26, 1956 to Richard and Mildred Smolek and was a freshman at DeKalb High School, a member of Cedar Lake Church of Christ. Surviving are the parents; a brother, James J., Waterloo; 4 sisters, Darlene Fittze, Louisville, Ky., Paula Kay, Goshen, and Debbie and Rhonda at home. Burial, Fairfield Cemetery. + 9-?-1970
Smolek Edward Larry "Snuffy", 69, of Winslow and formerly of Churubusco died Aug. 17, 2007, of kidney cancer at VNA Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville.He was a construction worker and a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 103 for 52 years. He was a graduate of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis and also attended Albion High School. He was born in Churubusco on Oct. 12, 1937, to George and Marjorie Herron Smolek Peffer. He grew up in Noble and Whitley Counties. He married Norma Thompson on Oct. 6, 1956. Surviving are his wife and two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeri and Phil Worland of Brownsburg, and Carrie and Tim Nelson of Winslow; a son, Greg Smolek of Washington; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Deanna Magnuson of Albion; and three brothers, Ken Smolek of Albion, Rex Smolek of Iowa City, Iowa, and Jerry Smolek of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard and Gene Leon Smolek. Services will be Saturday at the chapel at Gill Funeral Home in Washington, with his nephew, Scott Perry, officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Contributed by Sandi Larew
Smolek George, former Noble County resident of Chillicothe, Ill., was fatally injured in an auto-truck accident ten miles from his home Dec. 15. He was born in Chicago Heights, Ill. in 1911, but had spent most of his life in Indiana. Survivors include the widow, Rosemary; 2 daughters, Linda at home, and Mrs. Herbert (Deanna) Perry of Albion; 5 sons, Ken of Albion, Rex of Munster, Richard Lee of Waynedale, Larry of Indianapolis, and Jerry, a college student; 3 brothers, Art of Albion, Richard of Corunna, and Gene of Kendallville; one sister, Mrs. Irene Carpenter of Sacramento, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Agnes Stansberry of Churubusco, and the father, James of Kendallville; and 14 grandchildren. Smolek Jacquelyn L, 76, of Albion, died January 14, 2004 at Parkview Noble Hospital. She was born May 30, 1927 in Green Center, the daughter of Leonard and Ruth (Ashton) Summers. On January 26, 1946 she married Arthur F. Smolek. Surviving are her husband in Avilla; a daughter, Julie Neuhouser of Albion; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Brook and Brenda and Brad and Jerra, all of Albion, and Bart and April of Wawaka; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Wayne Hiatt of Texas; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; and a brother, Tom Summers. She was a homemaker and lifetime area resident. Services at Brazzell Funeral Home in Albion. Smolek James J, 93, died Tuesday in Kendallville Nursing Home. He was born in Wis., Sept. 22, 1880, a son of Joseph and Anna Smolek. He was married in San Pierre, Ind. Feb. 1, 1910 to Agnes Minarik. He came to Kendallville 27 years ago from North Judson and was formerly engaged in farming and Smolek & Sons building supplies. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Irene Burgoon, Sacramento, Calif.; 3 sons, Arthur, R. 1, Albion, Richard, Corunna, and Eugene, Kendallville; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Langley, Blue Island, Ill.; one brother, Joseph, North Judson; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Smolek Ken W, 76, died June 27, 2010 at Highland Regional Hospsital in Sebring, Fla. He was born Aug. 7, 1933 in Whitley County, the son of George and Marjorie (Herron) Smolek. He graduated from Albion High School in 1951. He retired as plant manager at Mid America Electric in Middlebury and had also worked at Lyall Electric. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Albion American Legion Post 246. He was a member of Albion Lions Club and Asbury United Methodist Church. On March 9, 1954 he married Jean Gappinger. She died on july 2, 2007. He then married Marilyn Taylor on March 28, 2009. Surviving are his wife; daughters, Deb (Doug) Wilson of Albion, Donita (Jeff) Brill of Wolcottville and Denise Smolek; 5 grandchildren, Sean and Faith Davies, Spencer and Seth Wilson, Evan Brill and Bryan Noland; 4 great-grandchildrenk, Chance and Shannon Davies, Zayden Wilsona nd Dillen Noland; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Rex and Kay Smolek of Iowa and Jerry and Reah Smolek of Indianapolis; a sister and brother-in-law, Deanna and Dick Magnuson of Albion. Smolek M Jean, 71, died July 2, 2007 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. She had retired after 16 years as a secretary in the engineering department at Flint & Walling in Kendallville. A graduate of Albion-Jefferson High School, she was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Albion. She was born Oct. 7, 1935 in Albion to Ralph and Marjory (Schutt) Gappinger. She married Ken Smolek on March 9, 1954 at Albion Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters, Deb and Doug Wilson of Albion, Donita and Jeff Brill of Wolcottville and Denise Smolek of Albion; a sister, Ann Winebrenner of Albion; 5 grandsons, Sean Davies, Spencer and Seth Wilson, Evan Brill and Bryan Noland; and 3 great-grandchildren. Smolek Michael A, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smolek northeast of Avilla, died Saturday at Butlerville, Indiana, where he had been a patient two days. He had been ill since birth. Smolek Richard Lee, 34, St. Joe, was found dead in his car Thursday (d. 10-21-1970) on an empty farm west of Avilla near the intersection of CR 100N and 600E. Sheriff’s Department officials said he died by asphyxiation. County police said they found the car in a garage with a hose connected to the tailpipe and run through one of the windows. The car had reportedly run out of gas. Mrs. Ed (Janice) Smith, R. 1, Avilla, found Smolek’s body when she was showing the farm to prospective renters. He was born in Whitley County Sept. 28, 1936, the son of George Smolek and Mrs. Marjorie (Herron) Peffer. He was married to the former Sherryl Campbell in Albion on June 20, 1964. He was a veteran and a member of the Avilla American Legion Post 240. Surviving are the wife; the mother, Mrs. Charles Peffer, Hammond; three children, Belinda Lee, Brenda Lee, and Richard Lee II, all at home; four brothers, Ken, Albion, Rex, Iowa City, Iowa, Larry, Indianapolis, and Jerry, Lafayette; and one sister, Mrs. Deanna Berry, Albion. Smolek Robin L, 15-year old daughter of Rex and Kay Staton Smolek, died at University Hospital in Iowa City. Born Nov. 24, 1958 in Lafayette, Ind., she moved with her family to Munster, Ind. in 1961 and to Iowa City in 1969. She was a sophomore at City High School. Surviving are her parents; 2 sisters, Michelle and Sandra, a brother Chad, all at home; her grandmothers, Mrs. Lucille Staton, Kimmell, and Mrs. Marjorie Peffer, Ligonier; great-grandparents, Mrs. Velma Herron and Mrs. Agnes Stansberry of Churubusco. Smolinske Arthur, 80, of Wawaka, died Thursday at Heritage Manor Health Center, Ligonier. Born May 10, 1904 in Kendallville, he was the son of Henry and Alice (Beight) Smolinske. On Dec. 31, 1927 in Wawaka he married Ruby Knepper. A self-employed carpenter, he was a 50-year Wawaka area resident. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Margaret Ott, and son, Richard of Wawaka; 2 sisters, Ruth Phillips of Clarksville, and Leora Barnes of Sarasota, Fla.; 2 brothers, Maurice, Auburn, and Robert of Kendallville; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A lifetime Noble County resident, she had resided in Albion 28 years. She was employed by Monsanto of Ligonier and was a member of Eagles Lodge in Albion. Smolinske Charles, Air Force T-Sergeant formerly of Wawaka, died Dec. 9, 1971 in a Charleston, N.C. hospital from injuries received when struck by a car in front of his home in Charleston. He was about 35 and was a 17-year career Air Force member. He was working at the rear of his car when another car hit him. Surviving are his wife, Judy; one son, Stephen; one daughter; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smolinske, one brother, Richard, and one sister, Mrs. Larry Ott, all of Wawaka. Smolinske Charles "Chuck", 57, of 308B Ashton Dr., died Saturday at the VA Hospital, Indianapolis. Born in Kendallville April 25, 1924, he was the son of Walter E. and Laura M. (Pollock) Smolinske. On April 1, 1958 in Albion, he married June Berg. A veteran of WW II, he had been a city policeman, a tool and die maker at No-Sag and was self-employed in an auctioneering service. He was a member of Eagles and Moose Lodges and American Legion Post 86. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Susanne) Baker and Angie of Kendallville, Mrs. Jasper (Tammy) Mullins and Jenine of Albion; 2 sisters, Mrs. Earl (Arletta) Halferty of South Milford and Helen of Kendallville; and 5 grandchildren. Smolinske Cora A, 90, of Kendallville died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville. She was born in Otter Creek, Illinois, on July 26, 1919, to Charles August and Isabelle (Stasell) Kohn. A retired employee of Flint & Walling Inc. in Kendallville, she worked as a hostess at Wendy’s in Kendallville. She was a member of the Kendallville Women’s Bowling Association for more than 50 years. She was a member of the American Legion Post 86 Women’s Auxiliary of Kendallville and the Eagles Auxiliary. In April 2009, Cora was presented the J. Edward Roush Award at the 3rd District Democratic Central Committee dinner for her nearly half a century of work for the Democratic Party. Survivors include two granddaughters, Cammi Rink and Angie Atteberry: a grandson, Steve Hostler; great-grandchildren, Jacob Shisler, Karissa DeClue and Steven and Jenny Hostler; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Esther Tjarks of LaGrange. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne “Susie” Pfeiffer, who died December 26, 2006; two grandchildren, Carmin Bolen and Jimmy Bolen, who died tragically February 14, 1993; two sisters, Rita Kohn and Dorothy Webb; and one brother, George Kohn. Smolinske Ernest, 69, died June 28, 1948 at his home in Elkhart following a heart attack. He formerly lived in Kendallville. Born March 27, 1879 in Germany, he was the son of Julius and Caroline Smolinske. He was a youth when his parents and 3 brothers came to this country and located in Kendallville. As a young man he learned the trade of a molder and was employed at Flint & Walling Mfg. Co. In earlier life he had resided at Toledo, Ohio, and years ago moved to Elkhart where he was employed as a molder for the NYC Railroad, retiring 2 years ago. Surviving are the wife, Alice; 2 daughters and one son, Laura Ullrich, Mrs. Elbert Noel and Cleo, Elkhart; 3 brothers, and one sister, Rudolph, Elkhart, Henry, Walter, and Mrs. Oscar Beight, Kendallville. Smolinske Freeda B, 91, of Kendallville, died June 19, 2004 at Parkview Noble Hospital. She had been an inspector at Monsanto in Ligonier 20 years and an Avon representative. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albion. She was born May 22, 1913 in Noble County, the daughter of Charles L. and Mabel (Tyler) Emahiser. On Jan. 8, 1933 in Albion she married Harold Smolinske. He died Sept. 17, 1978. Surviving are 7 grandchildren and their spouses, Shelly and Ed Waldron, Steve and Donna Smolinske, Jim Smolinske, Darold and Candi Smolinske, Travis Smolinske, Tiffany Smolinske and Matt Smolinske; 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jack, on Nov. 5, 1999; a granddaughter, Candi; 2 sisters, Maggie Allen and Evelyn Pforter; and a brother, Floyd Smolinske. Smolinske Harold "Smoke", 66, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was a lifetime resident of Noble County and lived at Skinner Lake. He retired from Excel in 1974 and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Albion. He was born Nov. 4, 1911 in Kendallville to Henry and Alice (Beight) Smolinske. He married Freeda Emahiser January 8, 1933. Survivors include his widow; one son Jack, R. 2, Avilla; two sisters, Mrs. Cecil (Leora) Barnes, Sarasota, Fla.; Mrs. Ernest (Ruth) Phillips, Jeffersonville; three brothers, Maurice, Auburn, Arthur, Wawaka, and Robert, Kendallville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Smolinske Jack D, 65, died Nov. 5 at McCray Hospital. He was born May 30, 1934 in Albion to Harold V. and Freeda (Emahiser) Smolinske. He was a lifetime Noble County resident and a truck driver. Surviving are his mother; 2 daughters, Shelly Waldron of Rome City and Tiffany Smolinske of Avilla; 5 sons, Steven of Garrett, Jim and Darold of Albion, Travis of Avilla and Matt of Arizona; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Smolinske Julius, 80, native of Germany and a resident of this community the past 49 years, died Sunday from a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Beight, U. S. 6 east of the city. He was born in Germany July 11, 1853. He married Caroline Scharbo and in Nov. 1885 they left Germany and came to this country. They located in this city and resided here continuously. She died July 20, 1928. He had been employed with the exception of 2 years at the Flint & Walling factory. Surviving are 4 sons and one daughter, Henry, and Mrs. Oscar Beight of near this city, Walter, this city, and Ernest and Rudolph of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Smolinske June G, 81, died Saturday in her Kendallville residence. She was born in Duluth, Minn., May 11, 1917 to Arthur William and Gertrude (Nowak) Berg. On April 1, 1958 in Albion she married Charles L. "Chuck" Smolinske. He died in February 1982. She moved to this area in 1958, was a homemaker and a member of Eagles Aerie 985, American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors of America, Kendallville Senior Citizens and Wayne Twp Homemakers Club. Surviving are 3 daughters, Tammy Smith of LaGrange, Janine Smolinske of Angola and Angie Atteberry of Syracuse; a stepdaughter; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Smolinske Laura M, 78, 605 Simon St., died this morning in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, after suffering a fall at her home Nov. 7. A native and lifelong resident of Noble County, her parents were William and Eva (Hartzel) Pollock. On May 20, 1916 she married Walter F. Smolinske, who died Sept. 17,1 953. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 86. Smolinske Maurice C, 90, died Monday in Betz Nursing Home. He retired in 1967 after 50 years of service to the C&O Railroad. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Auburn. He was born October 2, 1902 in Kendallville to Henry F. and Alice (Beight) Smolinske. He married Mamie M. Magnuson June 25, 1924 in Kimmell. She died October 6, 1986. Three brothers, Arthur, Robert, and Harold, also preceded him in death. He is survived by 2 sons, Maurice of Gary and Don L. of Crete, Ill.; 2 sisters, Ruth Phillips of Clarksville and Leora Barnes of Sarasota, Fla.; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was born Sept. 25, 1913 in Steuben County to Dea and Naomi (FanPelt) Ferris. On Nov. 26, 1931 in Kendallville she married Robert Smolinske. He died Nov. 13, 1990. Two brothers, Cleo and Weir Ferris, are also deceased. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Juanita Smolinske of Kendallville; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Jack Edmonds of Brimfield and Joan and Skip Klink of Angola; a brother, Doyne Ferris of Niceville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. On December 31, 1927 in Wawaka, she married Arthur Smolinske. He died in 1984. Surviving are a son, Richard; and a daughter, Margaret Ott, both of Wawaka; 2 brothers, Louis Knepper of Mendon, Mich., and Alvin Knepper of Elkhart. Smoots Ron L, 65, died Dec. 27, 2002 at his home in Fort Wayne. He founded and operated Pic Trics, the first video production house in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the Fort Wayne Advisory Council for Cable Television Programming. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. While attending Indiana University, he was a member of the Singing Hoosiers. He was born Nov. 24, 1937 in Ligonier to Russell and Ophia (Herendeen) Smoots. Smoyer Asa D, 72, formerly of Albion and Cleveland, Ohio, died at Lake Worth, Fla. He was a retired industrial engineer, having worked for the Gas Mfg. Co. for nearly 40 years, retiring in July, 1952. He and his wife moved to Lake Worth in 1954. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 24, 1957. Smurr Betty J, 86, died Dec. 5, 2009 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born Feb. 15, 1923 in Kendallville to Charlie and Marie (Dellenbaugh) Roush. She married Jack Smurr on Sept. 12, 1952 in Auburn. She was a machine operator at Electric Motors, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Smurr Robert Ward "Bob", 82, of rural Avilla, died July 7, 2010 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born in Butler on Feb. 5, 1928 to Harvey and Thelma (Applegate) Smurr. He graduated from Avilla High School in 1945 and the Indiana Institute of Technology in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Doris Robart on Oct. 21, 1955. He was a dairy farmer and was employed as an engineer with Harvester and Magnavox of Fort Wayne, Case Construction of Churubusco and Flint & Walling of Kendallville. He also worked in the Noble County Surveyor's office. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla and the American Legion. Snapp Arthur L died in a car-truck crash Sept. 2, 1950 while returning to his home at Columbia City from Fort Wayne on U. S. 30 about a mile east of Columbia City. He was a native of Noble County and was employed by a Columbia City oil company. He attended the Albion High school and enlisted on Sept. 26, 1942 as a private in WW II. He was discharged as a lieutenant at the close of the war after having served in both the European and Pacific sectors. He was born June 29, 1915. Sneary Kenneth D, 67, of Avilla, area physician for many years and father of Noble County coroner, Dr. Max Sneary, died Monday in McCray Hospital where he was a patient since Sunday evening. He had been ill about three months. Dr. Sneary, who had been an active member of the McCray Hospital staff since he came to this area in 1933, was born June 20, 1894 in Vaughnsville, Ohio. He was married Oct. 17, 1922 to Grace Yeiser and was a veteran of WW I. He came to the area from Zanesville, Ohio. Also surviving in addition to Dr. Max Sneary are the widow, Grace; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Mattmiller of Avilla; his father, Samuel; two brothers, Harry of Lima, Ohio and Ralph of Bradenton, Fla., one sister, Mrs. Helen Roberts of Vaughnsville; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Fred, and his mother, the former Belle Shumaker. He was a member and trustee of the First Methodist Church in Avilla, the Noble County Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. Sneary Larry L, 66, of Huntington, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born January 18, 1938 in Lima, Ohio, a son of Fred and Garnet (Yeiser) Sneary. On January 16, 1993 in Huntington, he married Rosanna Gunzenhauser. He was a 1956 graduate of Avilla High School. He retired in 1996 from Navistar in Springfield, Ohio. He worked in Fort Wayne and Springfield, Ohio, for over 36 years as a quality inspector. He graduated in 1957 from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and was a licensed funeral director. Sneary Max, 66, died April 28 after suffering a massive heart attack. Born Oct. 13, 1930 in Zanesville, Ohio, he came to Avilla with his family when his father opened a medical practice in 1934. His mother was Grace (Yeiser) Sneary. He graduated from Avilla High School in 1949 and Indiana University Medical School in 1957. On April 4, 1950 he married Joy A. Preston. On July 8, 1957 he started his family medical practice in Avilla with his father and brother-in-law, Dr. E. Dale Mattmiller. He served as Noble County coroner and as a leader and Sunday School teacher at Calvary United Methodist Church. In 1988 he was named Avilla Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and in 1990 he was named Indiana Family Physician of the Year by the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians Association. He is survived by his wife; 2 children; Candice Barbulesco, South Bend, and Jennifer Laur, Rome City; and 3 grandchildren, Adam and Erin Bryan and Ashley Laur; and a sister, Mrs. Dale (Betty) Mattmiller, Westerville, Ohio. He was a co-owner of the Avilla Feed Mills Inc. for 20 years, moving to Mesa, Az. in the early 1960s. He worked for the Mesa school systems as grounds foreman until retirement. He and his wife later moved to St. George to be near their daughter and her family. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. Snyder Henry Augustus died at Indian Village June 10, 1892 at the age of 60 years 8 months and 4 days. He was born in Middleton, Penn. When he was 4 years of age his parents moved to Wooster, Ohio, where he lived until he was 10, then he moved to Adams County, Ind. On April 5, 1855 he married Catherine S. Shaffer. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 5 survive. He and his family moved to Sparta Twp 25 years ago last March. He was a member of the Lutheran Church about 23 years. She was born May 2, 1934 in DeKalb County to Harold F and Lorene B (Hissong) Stabe. She married Donald W. Snyder on Aug. 22, 1954 in Kendallville. Soboslay Sallie G, 80, of Kendallville, died July 22, 2013in Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville. She was born January 24, 1933, in Kendallville to Kenneth E. and Marjorie A. (Emerson) Gardner. On January 7, 1953, in Angola she married William J. “Bill” Soboslay Sr. He died October 15, 2007. She graduated from Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1954 and received her bachelor’s degree from IPFW in 1977. She was a substitute teacher for East Noble for many years. She also worked at Hudson’s in Fort Wayne. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kendallville, Daughters of the American Revolution, Tri Kappa Sorority, the Noble County Democratic Committee and board member of the Cole Center Family YMCA.  Surviving are 2 daughters, Rhae A. (Jim) Dazey of Kendallville and Dee-Anna R. (Bill) Rathge of Kendallville; 4 sons, Douglas (Laura) Soboslay of Phoenix, Arizona, William “Joe” Soboslay Jr. of Kendallville, Christopher G. Soboslay of Kendallville, and Jay Soboslay of Kendallville; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Carole S. Sobraske John, 68, of Garrett, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital Tuesday. He recently submitted to an operation for bladder trouble. He also suffered from heart disease. He was born in Kendallville Oct. 16, 1866. He located in Garrett nearly 50 years ago and was employed for many years as a boilermaker in the B&O shops. Surviving are the widow, to whom he was married Sept. 15, 1896; 3 children, John Jr. of Gary, and Richard and Kathryn of Mishawaka; 2 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Joseph of Garrett and Martin of Minneapolis; and one sister, Sister Meinrada of Joliet, Ill. Sobraski Annie, 14, daughter of Martin Sobraski,, complained of a severe pain in her head and took to vomiting after which she fell to the floor unconscious. She died about an hour and a half later. Death was caused by the bursting of a blood vessel in the head. Funeral was held from the Catholic Church Thursday. ^ 12-27-1901

Solee Thomas F, 66, of Albion, died March 13, 2011. He was born on September 27, 1944, in St. Paul, Minn. to Harvey T. and Virginia (Mullins) Solee-Mikesell. He has owned the Friendly Inn in Albion for the past 26 years. On November 8, 1975, he married Judy Hall in Bryan, Ohio. He previously managed an appliance parts supply company in Fort Wayne, and was a musician for many years. He was a drummer with DJ and the DJ’s in Auburn and Buck Lake Ranch. He was a member of Carl Pace and the Stagecoach Band and Millstone. Surviving are his wife; his mother, of North Logan, Utah; 2 brothers, Denis (Charlotte) Solee of Pegram, Tennessee, and Terry (Stephanie) Root of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Samantha (David) Laffie of Calif. and Carol (Larry) Broome of Hollywood, Maryland. Sollenberger Leora M, 91, of Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center, died Saturday. Born in Kendallville November 13, 1898, she was the daughter of Albert and Rose (Gienger) Snider. On August 16, 1916 in Hillsdale, Mich., she married Don C. Sollenberger, who died in 1979. She was a homemaker and co-owner of Cree Lake Market and Sollenberger Orchards. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church for more than 70 years and of Wayne Twp Homemakers Club for more than 65 years. Solt Ralph Leroy, 65, R. 1, Cromwell, died Wednesday at his home. The son of Henry and Matilda (Aultom) Solt, he was born May 24, 1907 in Columbia City. He married Mary Cotton May 12, 1934. He retired from the General Electric Co., Fort Wayne, eight years ago following 36 years of service. He was a member of the Grace United Church of Christ, Fort Wayne. He lived on the Monroeville Road in Fort Wayne for 25 years before moving to his present address in the fall of 1971. Sorg Richard J, 60, of R. 2, Wolcottville, died Sunday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born in Kendallville Oct. 12, 1928, the son of George Henry and Frances D. (Reade) Sorg. On Oct. 21, 1949 in Kendallville he married Jacqueline P. "Jackie" Cunningham. He left Kendallville when he was 5 years old, returning from Pittsburgh in 1948. He was employed by Newnam Foundry and was a member of the Presbyterian Church and AFL-CIO. Sorge George F, about 50, (b.6-12-1913) of R. 2, Albion, died Feb. 19, 1964 at his home south of Albion. He operated a summer resort on Sand Lake for about 22 years before opening his new Parkside Drive-In on State Road 9 at the entrance of the Chain O’Lakes State Park and which he was operating at the time of his death. Sorgenfrei Max E, about 52, died Feb. 12, 1970 in Parkview Hospital, presumably because of injuries he received May 14 last year when he was caught between 2 trucks while working for the Noble County Highway Dept. near Green Center. He was a lifetime resident of Noble County, born May 10, 1917 near Wawaka, the son of Harold and Flo Yant Soregenfrei. He was married in 1943 to Kathleen Skeels in the Baptist parsonage in Wolf Lake. He and his father, the late Harold Sorgenfrei, owned and operated an Albion grocery store for 23 years before selling it to the present owner in 1959. Since the sale of the store he had been employed by the Noble County Highway Dept. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 246, VFW, Volunteer Fire Dept. and Lions Club. A graduate of Albion High School, he served in U. S. Army during WW II from Jan. 1941 to Dec. 7, 1945. Surviving are his wife; his mother and 2 sons, Jerry and Dennis; and 2 brothers, Harold Jr. of New Orleans, La., and Robert of Los Angeles. Soudah Edith Joan, 90, died Feb. 12 in Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. She had taught at Radford College in Virginia and at schools in Michigan and Indiana for several years. She taught at Avilla School until retirement in 1971. She was born Sept. 5, 1908 in Chicago to Harold and Hilda (Goranson) Ebenholtz. She married Rev. Peter Soudah in Chicago on June 19, 1933. He died in May 1972. She is survived by a son, Dr. John R. and his wife, Katherine Campbell-Soudah of Merrillville; 5 grandchildren: Harold’s children, Robert, John and Michelle; and John’s children, Angela and Jennifer. Soudah Peter, 69, R. 2, Kendallville, who served as Garrett Presbyterian Church pastor 25 years until his retirement in 1968, died Friday in Garrett Hospital. He was born July 5, 1902 in Acre, Galilee, Palestine to Elias and Renee (Ghawi) Soudah. He served as a British non-commissioned officer as a military judge’s secretary during WW I. He married Edith Ebenholtz in Chicago, Ill. June 19, 1934. He was a conservation speaker through Purdue University; an Indiana State Masonic speaker; and a Rotary International lecturer. He received citations from both Presidents Roosevelt and Truman for work as Benton County chairman of rationing and price control and chairman for WAC and WAVE enlistment during WW II. He served churches in Vevay and Fower, Ind., and Milan and Garden City, Mich. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Dr. Harold, San Antonio, Texas, and John, Bloomington; a sister, Mrs. Souria Manasseh, Acre, Israel; and 2 grandsons. In 1929 she married Herbert Johnson, who died in 1964. She next married Robert Souder, who died in 1985. She had been a cook at the Whitley County Hospital and then a sales clerk for Thornburg Drug Store until her retirement. On April 10, 1934 she married Joseph M. Souders. He died June 17, 1979. She grew up in Ligonier and Clearfield, Pa., where she graduated from high school. Southern Ralph, 61, a native of Wabash and a resident of LaOtto for the past twenty years, died at his home April 7, 1956. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the OES of Huntertown and an honorary member of the Avilla Masonic Order. He was employed by the Metal Fabricating Company in LaOtto. Southworth Lorenzo was born in Oswego, New York Sept. 8, 1810 and died in Kendallville Nov. 14, aged 91 years 2 months and 6 days. He left New York and went to Adrian, Mich. in 1836. He married Miranda Isbell in 1839. They had 7 children, Norman L., Sarah, Bradley C., Mary, Leander J., Hattie and Ida. Three only are now living, Bradley C., Leander J. and Mrs. Hattie Gibson, and all reside at Plymouth, Ind. Mrs. Southworth died at Plymouth about 9 years ago. Mrs. Sarah Hill and Norman L. died in this city; Mrs. Mary Cook died in Kansas and Mrs. Ida Duerr died at Plymouth. Southworth Miranda (Isbell) was born in Wayne County, Ohio May 29, 1823; died at Plymouth, Ind. April 23. She moved while yet a child to Lenawee County, Michigan, where she grew to womanhood, and in 1840 was married. Moved to Lisbon in 1843, where she resided until 1866 when she moved with her children to Kendallville and remained there until 1874 when she again moved with her children to Plymouth. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was the mother of 7 children, 4 of whom preceded her in death, Mary who died at Coffeyville, Kan., Sarah at Kendallville in 1887, Ida at Plymouth in 1886, Norman at Kendallville in 1887. Bradley C. and Leander J. and Mrs. Hattie Gibson yet remain and reside at Plymouth. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery at Plymouth beside her youngest daughter, Ida. ^ 5-1-1891
Southworth Norman L was born near Adrian, Mich. Jan. 29, 1841; died at Kendallville, May 25 of consumption with some heart complications. He came with his parents to Allen Twp in 1843 where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in Co. F. 30th Regiment, Ind. Vol. Infantry in the fall of 1861 and was with the regiment for nearly 2 years until failing in health he was discharged for physical disability and returned to Allen Twp. He again enlisted in the spring of 1865 in Co. C. 152nd Regiment, Ind. Vol. and received a First Lt. commission. He was assigned a position on General Egan’s staff, having charge of the provost guard. He remained in the service until the close of the war. He married Mary Jane Baughman of Allen Twp Oct. 3, 1863 and they had 6 children, the youngest preceding him in death a few months. He was a member of the Nelson Post No. 69 G.A.R. and Kendallville Lodge 316, IOOF and of Encampment No. 157. For several years past he had been engaged in the marble business. Two sisters, Mrs. Duerr, and Mrs. Hill, have died within a few months. Funeral was Friday from his residence. ^ 6-3-1887

Sower Mary S, 91, pioneer settler of this section and one of the oldest continuous residents of Noble County, died Feb. 10 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. C. Jackson, 4 miles west of Kendallville on R. 6. She was born in Morrow County, Ohio, July 2, 1847, and came to Orange Twp with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Keifer, in 1853. The family settled in a log cabin on a farm a few rods from the house in which she died. On July 2, 1868 she married Daniel L. Sower, who for years was a farmer of this county. He died June 30, 1925.
