Smith Jesse B was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, August 11, 1844 and died at his home in Ligonier, Indiana, Wednesday, May 23, 1906, aged 61 years, 9 months, and 12 days. He came with his parents to Noble County, September 19, 1864, being a resident of this county almost 42 years. His first marriage was to Miss Jennie Gibson, Jun 1886. To them was born one son who died in infancy. Mrs. Smith also died in the year 1868. His second marriage was to Miss Naomi West of Wolcottville, Indiana. To them were born two sons, Jesse B. and Nimon W., two daughters, Ora and Ruth. The daughter Ora died May 8, 1900. Thus leaving to mourn his departure a wife, three children and one brother, Abraham Smith of this city, the only one now surviving of a family of ten children. About seven years ago he moved from his country home to Ligonier. For about six years he has been in the grocery business. For seventeen years he has been a member of Ligonier Lodge No 185 F.A.M. His early Christian teaching and influence was with the Baptist Church. While he never became identified with any denomination yet was an ardent student of the scriptures and accepted the fundamental and every day practical religion. The following is an extract taken from the Democrat of Albion possibly written by editor McEwen: "The record of Jesse Smith of Elkhart Twp is remarkable as a teacher in the common schools of Noble County. Mr. Smith was formerly one of the most successful teachers of the county, but several years ago he retired from the pedagogical arena and is now one of the successful farmers of Elkhart Twp. He probably deserved the championship as a teacher in the schools of Noble County. For 23 consecutive years he has been a teacher. During this time he never missed by sickness but one week of school and was never absent from home at night except twice when he was snowbound. Mr. Smith did all of his school work in five schools and sent out from his schools more teachers and more graduates in the common school branches than any other teacher in the county. Twelve teachers came out of his home (Kansas) school where he taught for six consecutive terms, and indeed in every school he taught there were either teachers of diplomats turned out. When county superintendent W.P. Denny offered a premium for the best map of Noble County, Mr. Smith's school carried off the reward. During his first term in the Wawaka Schools thirteen graduates received common school diplomas. W.A. Fox, county superintendent of the Noble County schools and former superintendent of the Albion schools, Dr John Gill of Chicago, former deputy treasurer of Noble County, Dr Frank Black of Ligonier, a former successful teacher of Noble County and Rev. S.J. McConnell, a former successful teacher in this county, but now pastor of a Free Baptist Church in the Buckeye state, Jerome Probst a prominent lawyer of Chicago, received their initiative school work from Mr. Smith. Thirty teachers went from his schools into the profession of teaching. Mr. Smith was considered one of the hardest workers for the advancement of the common schools and if teachers drew pensions he would be justly entitled to one. We had the pleasure of teaching in the Elkhart Twp school during a portion of the time that Mr. Smith was connected with the schools of that township as a teacher and can say without hesitation that he stood high in the estimation of the patrons of the schools. He was never satisfied with his work but was continually trying to advance in order to be more successful in his chosen profession. His school work was of a high order of excellence and was appreciated by everyone who had the best interest of the school at heart. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church on Friday afternoon conducted by Rev L.O. Oyler of Bremen, Indiana, assisted by Rev. Murry and Rev. Robison. The members of Ligonier Lodge No 185 F.A.M. attended in a body and participated in the service according to the rules of the order. Burial, Ligonier cemetery. Contributed by Pat ODell
