Shideler Beatrice, 80, R. 1, died at Goshen Hospital. She
was born April 14, 1890 in Huntington County to Allison and Susan (Zook) Owen.
Her husband, Ezra, died in 1957. She lived here 2 years with her daughter, Mrs.
Charles Williams, and previously had resided in Marilla, Mich. She was a member
of the Church of the Brethren, Marilla. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs.
James Thompson, Muskegon; 2 sons, Carlos in Fla., and Kenneth, Copenish, Mich.;
a sister, Mrs. Eskie Lee, Huntington; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren
and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Services and burial Wednesday in Marilla. + 3-?-1971
Shields Arlien, 79, of Kimmell South Shores, died Monday in
Kendallville Manor. Born May 2, 1908 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Curtis
J. and Gertrude (Swank) Clay. On June 26, 1926 in Waynedale, she married Bert E.
Shields, who died April 1, 1977. She moved to Kendallville in 1929 from Ashley
and was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist and OES No. 122. Surviving
is a son, Burton, Port Orchard, Wash.; 2 grandchildren; and 2
great-grandchildren. A brother, Walter Clay, preceded her in death. Services Friday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home, Kendallville. Burial, Lake

Shields Bert E, 71, Kimmell South Shores, an employee of Kraft Foods here
for 41 years, died Friday at McCray Hospital following a massive
heart attack. He joined the board of directors of First Federal Savings &
Loan in 1952 and served as president since 1965. He was elected to the city
council in 1959 and served until he moved out of the city limits. Born Aug. 9,
1905 in Steuben County to Albert and Chloe (Sink) Shields, he married Arlien
Clay on June 26, 1926 at Fort Wayne. Prior to moving here he resided at Salem.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 276, Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne, and a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son,
Gene, Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Elsie) Armstrong, Las Vegas,
Nev.; a brother, Jess L., Dunedin, Fla.; and 2 grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home, Kendallville. Burial, Lake View

Shields Burton Gene, 64, died Tuesday in Harrison Hospital in Bremerton,
Wash. He was born October 12, 1928 in Ashley to Bert and Arlien
Shields. He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1947 and attended
Purdue University for one year on a basketball scholarship. He served the
U.S. Navy at Bremerton Naval Hospital until his discharge in 1952. He
married Joan Ann Hannah on October 5, 1952 in Port Orchard. He received
his pharmaceutical degree in 1956 from the University of Washington. He
worked for his father-in-law at Hannah & Powell and later became president
of H & P Drug Corp. in Port Orchard. He was a member of Washington State Pharmaceutical Association and Port Orchard
Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Stephanie
LaRiviere of Seattle; a son, Bard of Port Orchard; and 2 grandsons, Lee Burton
and Jason LaRiviere. Funeral Saturday in Rill Chapel. Burial, Lane

Shields Caleb Bryant, 7 weeks old, died Thursday in Hospice Home in Fort
Wayne. He was born May 2, 1998 in Fort Wayne to Ken and Juli (Reece)
Shields. Surviving are his parents in Kendallville; a sister, Candice; his
twin brother, Camden; grandparents, Robert and Judy Haney of Kendallville, James
and Sandra Shields of Bradford, Mass.; great-grandparents, Ruby DeArmond of
Wolcottville; Kenneth and Helen Morrison of Oakfield, Maine, and Helen Goodall
of Gorham, Maine. Memorial services Saturday in Hite Funeral Home.

Shields Cleota V, 68, died Saturday in McCray Hospital. She was born May
30, 1897 in Altona, the daughter of Harland and Clara Bherns. She married George
W. Shields, who preceded her in death. Surviving are two brothers, Orville,
Kendallville, and Forrest, Garrett; two sisters, Alda Snider, Avilla, and Laura
Rodebaugh, Auburn; six grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Garrett.
Services Monday in McKee-Miles Funeral Home. Burial, Christian Union

Shields Jesse L, 80, died Friday at the Knollwood Terrace Nursing Center
in Atlanta. He was born August 27, 1910 in Steuben County, the son of
Albert and Chloe (Sink) Shields. On November 8, 1930 he married Ruth Bovee
in Angola. He lived in Kendallville 1931-1955 and was a member of City
Council, the First Christian Church, Kendallville Masonic Lodge 276 and Scottish
Rite of Fort Wayne. He was employed by Kraft Foods in Kendallville and was
Kraft plant manager at Palmyra, Pa., retiring in 1970 after 41 years. He
moved to Dunedin, Fla., where he became active in real estate and moved to
Atlanta in 1988. Surviving are his wife; a son, Jerome of Atlanta; a
sister, Elsie Armstrong of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one granddaughter, Audrey
Shields. A brother, Bert, preceded him in death. Services Monday at

Shields Lauren K, 12, of Ligonier, died Jan. 20, 2004 at her home from
cancer. She was a member of Cromwell United Methodist Church and had
received the Courage Award in 2003 from West Noble Middle School. She was
born June 3, 1991 in Goshen to Dave and Lisa Shields. Surviving are her
parents; a brother, Andrew; grandparents, Terry and Barbara Shields of Hartford
City, Elwood and Wilma Lawson of Hartford City; great-grandmother, Betty
Goodspeed of Syracuse and great-great-grandmother, Laura Goodspeed of
Zephyrhills, Fla. She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather,
Vaughn Goodspeed. Services Saturday at Stone's Hill Community

Shields Ruth Evelyn, 92, of Atlanta, Ga., died May 4, 2001 in Piedmont
Hospital, Atlanta. She was born Sept. 6, 1908 in LaGrange to James and
Myrtle (Collins) Bovee. She married Jessie Shields on Nov. 8, 1930 in
Angola. She was a member of First Christian Church while living in
Kendallville. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jerome and Minia
Shields, Atlanta; and a granddaughter, Audrey Shields. Two brothers,
Russell and Harold Bovee; and a sister, Wava McKee, preceded her in death.

Shierling Paul, 71, formerly of R. 1, LaOtto, died Sunday in
Valley Baptist Hospital, Harlingen, Texas. He was born July 29, 1900 in Randolph
County to Martin and Sarah Shierling. He married Mary A. Garringer March 5, 1921
in Sturgis, Mich. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are the wife; 2 daughters, Patricia Lou, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Edwin
McElheny, Nappanee; one brother, Bert, Winchester; and 2 grandchildren. Services Friday in McKee Funeral Home, Garrett. Burial, Reitenour Cemetery,

Shifaly John was born in Wurttemburg, Germany July 17, 1838. At
the age of 14 he emigrated to this country, coming entirely alone, and landed in
New York City. He went to Columbiana County, Ohio, where he hired out to work on
a farm, and came to Kendallville in 1854, where he was employed as clerk in a
grocery store. He was also employed in A. B. Park’s hardware and soon
thereafter engaged as a farm hand to the late Thomas Weston. He married Emily P.
A. Weston Jan. 2, 1859, and together they have resided mostly on her parents’
farm until Aug. 30, when he died, aged 66 years 1 month and 13
days. They were the parents of 3 children, 2 of which have preceded him in
death. In 1887 he visited Germany but was perfectly willing to return and
continue his residence in this his favored country. He was a member of
Kendallville Lodge IOOF No. 316 and Canton Kendallville No. 13 of the Patriarchs

Shiffer Edith A, 101, died Jan. 23 at the Alfran Nursing Home in
Warsaw. Funeral will be Friday at Ulrey-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Cromwell.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William Benninghoff of Lake Wawasee; 4
grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Burial, Gracelawn Cemetery,

Shiland Mary E died Saturday at a hospital in Cleveland. Her
early home was in Swan Twp and she is a daughter of Mrs. Rebecca Crothers of
that township. The remains arrived here from Painesville Tuesday via the Lake Shore. J. L. Shiland and Arthur, husband and stepson of the
deceased, and Mrs. J. S. Conlogue, aunt, accompanied the remains. They were
taken to Avilla via the GR& I Railroad. Mary E. Crothers was born in Green
Twp Sept. 7, 1851; and died in Cleveland, O. Dec. 24, at the age
of 47 years 3 months and 17 days. She was the second daughter of Nathan and
Rebecca Crothers and her childhood was spent at the home of her parents in Swan
Twp. In Nov. 1882 she married James L. Shiland of Painesville, O. where she
resided until her demise. Funeral at the Avilla M. E. Church. Burial,

Shiley Carrie, wife of towerman at the GR&I & Lake Shore
interlocker here, John F. Shiley, died at Longcliffe Tuesday. She was an inmate
of the hospital there for a number of years. She was a member of the Church of
Christ, this city. She leaves one son 9, who makes his home with his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Shiley of Steubenville. Her only near relatives
residing here are her sisters, Mrs. R. J. Stewart of S. Main St., Mrs. John
Varner and Mrs. William Stout of Allen Twp. Funeral at the residence of

Shilts Franklin died at his home October 6, 1925, two and a half miles
north of Columbia City. His wife preceded him in death 26 years ago. He is
survived by six children besides his grandchildren. The funeral was held October
8, the children all being present, except Joe, who is in Montana. The others who
attended from a distance were John Krous and wife and son and wife and daughter
Aggie of Auburn, Henry Schmenk and wife, Herman Lash and wife, Mrs. Joe Philips,
Nick Anderson and wife, Walter Perlich and wife, Mrs. Mike Bauman, all of

Shimsheske, Pearl E., 77 of Ontario, died Tuesday in GaGrange
Co Hospital. She was born in Fort Wayne Ma 8, 1911, the daughter of
Charles Oliver and Mary Ann (McCoy) Minick. On Dec 25, 1941 in Sturgis,
MI she married Henry J Shimsheske who preceded her in death Sep 25,
1977. Surviving are two sisters Mrs Derle (Ruth) Vaughn of Apache
Junction, AZ and Mrs. George (Blanche) Rossen of Denver, CO. Services

Shinn Omar Louis, 92, of Fort Wayne, died Jan. 6, 2004 at Beverly Rehab
Center. He retired from General Electric in Fort Wayne after 32 years of
service. He was born June 18, 1911 in Auburn to Charles and Lenora
(Wagner) Shinn. On June 6, 1936 in East Gary, he married Violet Henrietta
Geiger. She died Jan. 18, 1993. Surviving are a son, O. Louis Jr. of
Fort Wayne; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Larry VanPelt of Fort
Wayne; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services Saturday at

Shinn Violet Henrietta, 76, died Monday in Kenney Health Care Center in
Ligonier. She was born in Garrett on June 8, 1916 to Claymore Brooks and
Elizabeth Belle (Warner) Geiger. On June 6, 1936 in East Gary, she married
Omar Louis Shinn. She had lived at Sylvan Lake since 1968. She was a
member of Christian Fellowship Center in Sturgis, Mich. Surviving are her
husband; a daughter, Elizabeth VanPelt of Fort Wayne; a son, Omar L. Jr. of Fort
Wayne; 5 brothers, Earl Clark of Garrett, Jim Clark of Fort Wayne, Dale Clark of
Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Frank Clark of Owensboro, Ky., and Allen Clark of
Lakeland, Fla.; 5 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A sister,
Alice Meyers; and 3 brothers, Jack and Richard Cook and Gilbert Geiger, preceded

Shipe Cecil B, 69, of 113 W. Hobart St., Ashley, died
Sunday at DeKalb Hospital from a heart condition. Born Oct. 31, 1914, he was the
son of Bert E. and Hannah (Cottrell) Shipe. On March 29, 1936 he married Lois A.
Johnson. A lifetime area resident he retired from Dept. 40 of Warner Gear
Corporation 11 years ago after 32 years of employment. He was active in the
Ashley Little League for 25 years and was a member of the Ashley Lodge No. 614
F&AM. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John (Ruth Ann) Pearson of
Ashley; a son, Donald D. of Ashley; 3 brothers, John D. of Port Charlotte, Fla.,
Carl S. of rural Pleasant Lake, and Robert H. of Ashley; and 3 grandchildren.

Shipe Cecil V, 79, Bronson, Mich., died Friday. Born in Ashley Aug. 18,
1898, he was the son of I. V. and Della Shipe. He married Myrtle B. Nickerson
Aug. 22, 1919 in Kendallville. She died Dec. 6, 1977. He was a WW I veteran and
clerk of the NYC Railroad Co. until retirement in 1963. Survivors include 5
daughters, Mrs. Jody Selma Fagan, LaPorte, Mrs. Milton Norma Erickson, Three
Oaks, Mich., Mrs. Henry Clevenger, Bronson, Mrs. Linda Snider, Jackson, Mich.,
and Rebecca of Sturgis, Mich.; 3 sons, Richard of Sturgis, Donald of Fort Wayne,
and Sheryl of Reelsville, Ind.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ted Ruth of Diekson, Tenn., and
Mrs. Viola Wrathall of Livingston, Texas; 24 grandchildren and 20

Shipe Eugene Ray, 7-weeks old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Shipe of
Kendallville, and one of the second pair of twins in the family, died Monday
from measles and pneumonia. Surviving are the parents, twin sister Norma Lee,
Jean 11, Selma 14, Richard 7, and Donald 10. Funeral was held Tuesday.

Shipe Hannah G, 81, Ashley, died Thursday in DeKalb
Hospital. She was born in Hudson Aug. 14, 1891, a daughter of John and Edith
(Perkins) Cottrell, and was married to Bert E. Shipe who died July 28, 1968. She
was a lifelong resident of the area and was a former chief operator of United
Telephone at Shipshewana and later at Ashley. She was a member of Friendship
Club. Surviving are 4 sons, John D., R. 1, Angola, Cecil B. and Robert H.,
Ashley, and Carl S., Auburn; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. Funeral will be Monday in Kistler Funeral Home in

Shipe Ida, 39, died at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne Friday.
Funeral was held at the U. B. Church in Corunna, Sunday. She underwent a
caesarian operation about six weeks ago. The 6-weeks old daughter, Leanna, one
son Russel, her husband and three stepchildren survive. Remains were laid to
rest in Fairfield Center Cemetery. ~ 1-9-1916
Shipe, Lois A., 74, formerly of Ashley, died Friday in Betz Nursing
Home, Auburn. She was born in Waterloo, Sep 11, 1914 the daughter of
Isaac and Helen (Rohm) Johnson. March 29, 1935 in Waterloo, she
married Cecil B Shipe who preceded her in death May 6, 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Ruth Ann) Pearson of Ashley;
a son, Donald D Shipe of Ashley; a sister, Doris Shultz of Waterloo;
a brother, Paul Johnson of Holgate, OH; 3 grandchildren and 1
great-grandchild. A sister Naomi Schlosser and a brother, Wayne

Shipe Richard R, 53, of Sturgis, died Tuesday in the Sturgis Hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1927 in Noble County, he was the son of Cecil and Myrtle
(Nickerson) Shipe. On Jan. 10, 1953 in Angola he married Mary Kay Gundrum. He
moved from Indiana to the Sturgis area in 1954. He was a veteran of WW II and
the Korean Conflict, having served in both the U. S. Army and U. S. Navy. He was
employed by Ross Laboratories and was a member of Sturgis Church of the
Nazarene, American Legion Post 241, Fort Wayne, and Lodge No. 171 Knights of
Pythias. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Deborah) Lehman and
Mrs. Michael (Carol) Carpenter of Sturgis; 3 sons, Richard Jr., David and Donald
of Sturgis; 5 sisters, Mrs. Henry (Shirley) Clevenger of Bronson, Mich.,
Mrs. Jody (Selma) Fagan of Fla., Mrs. William (Norma) Erickson of Ariz., Mrs.
William (Melinda) Snyder of Jackson, Mich., and Mrs. Dennis (Rebecca) Cox of
Sturgis; 2 brothers, Donald L. of Fort Wayne and Sheryl "Skip" of
Indianapolis; and 12 grandchildren. One sister and one grandson preceded him in

Shipe Russell E, 78, R. 2, LaGrange, died Thursday in
LaGrange County Hospital. Services will be Saturday in Frurip-May Funeral Home,
LaGrange. Born Jan. 2, 1899 in Noble County, he was the son of Curtis and Belle
(Campbell) Shipe. He married Leola Wonders, who died April 29, 1950. He was a
member of East Springfield Church and had been a farmer. Surviving is a son,
Lavon, R. 2, LaGrange; and 3 grandchildren. Burial, Fairfield Center Cemetery

Shipe Velva M, 96, died Friday at The Oaks Living Center, Columbia
City. She was born in Cosperville on July 17, 1900 to John and Mina
(Smith) Bloom. In May 1921 she married Russell E. Shipe in Noble County
and spent all of her married life on the family farm in Elkhart Twp. Her
husband died January 24, 1959. She assisted her husband in their farming
and also worked at Shull Apple Orchard, Rome City, for 20 years before retiring
in 1981. She was a member of Woodruff-Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Ruth) Resler of rural Churubusco; 2
grandsons, David L. and Darrell L. Resler; 6 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild. Funeral Monday in Churubusco United Methodist

Shipley Opal L, 46, R. 1, Cromwell, died last Monday in her
home of natural causes. She had been ill with cancer. Born Sept. 12, 1934 in
Decatur, she moved to the Syracuse area from Fort Wayne in 1966. She was married
Aug. 22, 1953 to Richard Shipley. Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters, Mrs.
Jack (Roxanne) McMahon, Hammond, Renee and Rhonda at home; 5 sons, Richard Jr.,
Cromwell, Robin, Kalamazoo, Randy, Syracuse, Rex, Ligonier, and Roger at home; 5
grandchildren; 3 brothers, George Evans, Shelby, Ohio, Paul Evans, Fort Wayne,

Shippy Emmett D, 73, of R. 1, Cree Lake, died Wednesday at
McCray Hospital. He was born April 21, 1910 in Kendallville, the son of Clare
and Mabel (Baker) Shippy. On April 7, 1932 in Ligonier he married Mildred L.
Johnson. A lifetime area resident, he was retired from Studebaker after 26 years
of employment. He had also been employed by Koontz-Wagner. He was a Navy
veteran, a journeyman electrician, a member of IBEW and affiliated with Faith
United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Mrs. Don (Janis)
Swank of Kendallville, Mrs. Jerry (Betty) Chapman of New Carlisle, Mrs. Dorman
(Patricia) Wolff of Homesassa, Fla., and Mrs. Edward (Susan Kay) Walters of
South Bend; a son, Stuart of Rochester; a brother, Franklyn of Cree Lake; 16
grandchildren and one great-grandson. A brother, Robert, preceded him in death.

Shippy E Joan, 80, of Kendallville, died Sept. 24, 2010 at her
home. She was born in Woodburn on May 12, 1930 to Roy and Edith (Sweet)
Hetrick and graduated from Kendallville High School in 1948. She married
Donald Shippy on Oct. 29, 1948 in Kendallville. She was an employee of
J.C. Penney in Kendallville. She and her sister, Carol, later owned the
Cellar Gift Mart for 20 years and she then went on to work at Glad Tidings in
Kendallville. She was a member of the Trinity Church United Methodist and
the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, Robert
and Cynthia of Fort Wayne and Donald Jr. and Nancy of Kendallville; 2 daughters,
Marcia and Wendell Fritz and Melinda and Kevin Hamman of Kendallville; 9
grandchildren, Samuel and Shannon Fritz, R. Andrew Shippy, Molly and Fred
Krieger, Chris Hamman, Kathryn and Ryan Ziegler, Seth and Toni Fritz, Aaron and
Jessica Heinke, Carrie Hamman and Lakan Shippy; 2 great-grandchildren; one
brother, James and Marion Hetrick of Santa Ana, Calif.; one sister, Jerrilyn

Shippy Larry, 50, formerly of Kendallville and Muncie, died
Sunday in a Fort Myers Beach, Fla. hospital from injuries sustained in an auto
accident Saturday. He was the son of R. Franklin and Margaret (Rothermel) Shippy. In Sept. 1959 he married Jenny Schuler. He moved from Muncie to Fla. 4
years ago. He was a former teacher and coach at Edison Community College at Fort
Myers Beach where he had coached Fuzzy Zoeller. He was founder and owner of
Shippy’s Sport Shop at Fort Myers Beach and a member of Ascension Catholic
Church, Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, and Muncie BPOE Lodge No. 245.
Surviving are his wife; his parents at Fort Myers Beach; a son, Daren, an
attorney in Bonita Springs, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Roy (Gloria) Haney of
Muncie; and a brother, Terry of Fort Myers Beach. Mass Tuesday at

Shippy Lucille, 95, died March 6, 2002 at Shepherd of the Hill in
Kendallville. She worked as a cook at Dairy Queen and with her husband,
managed the Publix Motel & Restaurant. She was a member of Eastern
Star Noble Chapter 122 and Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville, the
Lady Democrats of Noble County and the Order of the White Shrine of
Jerusalem She was born Oct. 20, 1906 in DeKalb County to Marc William and
Mabel (Barnhart) Esselburn. She married Robert Samuel Shippy Jan. 26,
19026 in Ligonier. He died Oct. 2, 1977. She was also preceded in
death by 2 brothers, Vernie and Jay Esselburn and in January 1927 by an infant
son, Robert. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Eugene and
Joan Shippy of Kendallville; 4 grandchildren and their spouses, Marshal and
Wendell Fritz, Melinda and Kevin Hamman, Donald Jr. and Nancy Shippy, and Robert
and Cyndi Shippy; and 9 great-grandchildren, Sam, Molly and Seth Fritz, Robert,

Shippy Margaret, 94, of Kendallville, died Sept. 15, 2005 at Williamsburg
Village in Muncie. She was born in Kendallville on July 28, 1911 to Orven
and Connie Thomas (Schmuck) Rothermel. She married Ronald Franklin Shippy
on Oct. 28, 1930 in Muncie. She and her husband managed restaurants of the
former Kendallville Country Club and Greenhills Country Club in Muncie.
She was a former member of Trinity Church United Methodist in
Kendallville. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Roy
Haney of Muncie; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Cheryle Shippy of Venice,
Fla.; 3 sisters, Cleo McKean, Katherine Munk and Jean Fox, all of Kendallville;
10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 30, 1997; a son, Larry; one

Rochester. She was born in Booneville, Ind. on Sept. 6, 1910 to John M.
and Margaret (Bennie) Johnson. She married Emmett Shippy in Ligonier on
April 7, 1932. He died March 28, 1984. She was a member of Grace
United Methodist Church, Rochester. Surviving are a son and
daughter-in-law, Stuart and Janet of Rochester; 4 daughters and sons-in-law,
Janis and Don Swank, Kendallville, Betty and Jerry Chapman, New Carlisle,

Hospital. A lifetime resident of Kendallville, he was the son of Clare
and Mabel (Baker) Shippy, born Jan. 13, 1909 in Kendallville. He married Lucille
Esselburn Jan. 26, 1926 in Ligonier. A retired B&O Railroad trainmaster, he
was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, F&AM Lodge 276, Scottish
Rite, White Shrine, Elks Lodge 11194 and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
Survivors include the wife; a son, Donald E., Country Club Hills; 2 brothers,
Emmett and Franklyn of Cree Lake; 4 grandchildren and 3

Shippy Ronald Franklin, 85, died Thursday at his daughter's home in
Muncie. He was born October 21, 1912 in Kendallville to Clare C. and Mabel
Mae (Baker) Shippy. He married Margaret Rothermel on October 28,
1930. He was the last surviving member of the world-famous Six American
Belfords acrobatic troupe. He was a retired engineer for the B&O
Railroad and a life member of the Brotherhood of Trainmen and the Elks
Lodge. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Roy (Gloria) Haney of Muncie; a son
and daughter-in-law, Terry and Cheryle Shippy of Englewood, Fla.; 10
grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. One son, Larry, and brothers

Shireman Ethel M, 83, of 403 E. 4th St., Ligonier, died today at Heritage Manor. She was born Dec. 8, 1899 in Ligonier, the
daughter of Austin and Julia Ann (Wyatt) Rex. On Nov. 4, 1922 in South Bend she
married Carl O. Shireman, who died in 1968. She was a lifetime area resident and
a 25-year employee of Mathews Dime Store in Ligonier and a member of Ligonier
United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Larry of Elkhart; 2 sisters, Mrs.
Floyd (Gertie) Meroney and Lillian Fidler; a brother, Walter, all of

Shirk David W, 84, of Waupun , Wis., died Jan. 14, 2006 at Waupun
Christian Home. He had worked at McCray Refrigeration in
Kendallville. In 1973 he became a partner in King-Weyler Equipment of Fort
Wayne. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He studied
at Miami of Ohio and Purdue University and served in the U.S. Army in WW
II. He was born June 9, 1921 in Greensburg to Samuel and Frances
(McLaughlin) Shirk. He married Helen Sawyer in August 1941. She died
in 1982. Surviving are 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Fort
of New Castle and Ann Shirk of Columbus, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger
and Carol of Mayville, Wis.; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Pat of
Waldron; a sister, Mary Bevan of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and 4 grandchildren,
Joseph and Paul Shirk, Emma and Annie Fort. He was also preceded in death

Shirk Ethel M, 79, 1055 CR 40, Garrett, died April 13 at Miller’s Merry
Manor in Garrett. She was born in Kosciusko County December 19, 1912, the
daughter of Burl A. and Louise (Keiser) Starner. She married Glen Shirk October
14, 1931 in Garrett. He died February 16, 1979. She was a member of the Patriots
CB Club, Richland Twp Home Demonstration Club and the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Glen (Katherine) Camp, Los Alamos, N. M.,
Mrs. Lester (Patricia) Bornick, Montello, Wis., Mrs. Barbara Huyette,

at her residence. She was born in Kendallville Nov. 8, 1922, the daughter of
Ollie T. and Oala (Bogner) Sawyer. On Aug. 18, 1951 in Kendallville she married
David Shirk. A lifetime resident of Kendallville, she was a member of Faith
United Methodist Church and the Noble County Unit of the American Cancer
Society. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Ann M. of Columbus, Ohio, and
Nancy E. of Connersville; a son, Roger D. of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a brother,

Shirk Joel died at his home in Jefferson on Sept. 4, 1891, aged 86
years 7 months and one day. He was born in Lancaster County, Penn. Feb. 3, 1805.
He married Elizabeth Reinhold Oct. 25, 1831 and they
had 7 sons and 4 daughters. One son and 2 daughters died in infancy. Six
sons and 2 daughters survive. He came with his family to Noble County in the spring of 1869 and purchased a farm
in Jefferson Twp on which he resided until his death. He joined the Mennonite Church 40 years ago and until death
was a faithful member. Funeral and interment took place at Union Cemetery in Jefferson on Sept. 7, 1891.The surviving children except one daughter, Mrs. Anna Kurtz in Penn.,
were present. He left his widow, children and grandchildren.
Children are Mrs. Anna Kurtz in Lancaster County, Penn., John, Michael
and Henry of South Bend and Sarah (Mrs. William Cary), E. R., Adam and Reuben in

Shirk Kathleen H (Young), 62, Auburn, was found dead at her home Feb. 6.
She had lived in Avilla for approximately 20 years and in Auburn the last 10
years. She was born in Bournemouth, England, Feb. 15, 1921. She had been a Bell
Telephone operator and a telephone operator for Magnavox in Fort Wayne. She had
also sold tickets at the Hi-View Theatre for many years. Surviving are one son,
Jim of Churubusco; two grandsons, Andrew and Bradley; one sister in Fort Wayne,
Wynne Kerzan, three sisters and a brother in England, Gladys Seabright, Lucy

Shirk Ruth, 92, Avilla, died June 1, 2003 at her son's home in
Auburn. She was born September 18, 1910 in Swan Twp, Noble County, to
George and Lou (Berkes) Keck. She married Wayne Shirk on May 25,
1928. He died October 26, 1977. Surviving are a daughter and
son-in-law, Donna and Richard Buchmeier of Kendallville; a son and
daughter-in-law, James and Sue Shirk of Auburn; 7 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Preceding her in
death were 4 brothers, Clarence, Ralph, Walter and Kenny Keck; and 4 sisters,
Helen and Bessie Keck, Bernice Gienger, her twin, Esther Gienger; and one
grandchild. She and her husband opened Shirk's Fruit Market in 1953 and
built Avilla Drag Strip and ran it until their retirement. She was a

Shirk Steven G, 20, Army Specialist 4th ,was killed in a non-hostile
accident in South Viet Nam Sept. 22. Spec. 4 Shirk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen
Shirk of R. 3, Auburn, was drowned when an army truck in which he was riding
went off a slippery road into a river. A 1966 graduate of Waterloo High School,
he entered the Army the same year and went to Viet Nam last March. In addition
to his parents, he is survived by four brothers and five sisters. He was a
nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Shirk, Avilla. Services were in First Baptist
Church, Garrett. A special military funeral was conducted with a unit from Fort

Shirk Walter J, 63, died at the DeKalb County Home near Auburn
on Monday. The brother of Wayne Shirk, Avilla, he was a laborer at the county
home. Born September 23, 1902 on a farm two and one-half miles northwest of
Garrett, he was the son of the late Levi and Nettie Shirk. He had resided in the
Garrett area all his life. He was a bachelor. Survivors, in addition to his
brother in Avilla, include two brothers, Harry of Battle Creek, Mich., and Glen,
R. 3, Auburn; and a sister, Mrs. Dan Smith, Garrett. Funeral was last Wednesday

married Ruth Keck May 25, 1928 in Kalamazoo, Mich. She survives. Other survivors

Hospital. He lived in Garrett and was a brakeman for CSX Railroad for 27 ½
years, retiring Aug. 4, 1989. He was a U. S. Army veteran, a member of Waterloo
Post of VFW and a former member of the Avilla American Legion, Garrett Eagles
and Kendallville Moose lodges. He was born May 13, 1929 in DeSoto, Ill. to Melvin and Arlene
(Correll) Shirley. He married Marjorie J. Tarlton on March 17, 1951 in LaGrange. Surviving are 2 daughters, Barbara Reis of Waterloo
and Sharon Miller of Olney Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Jim Prince; 2 brothers,
Don of North Liberty and Charles "Leon" of Shipshewana; 3 sisters,

nursing home in Butler. She retired in 1989 from Pent Products in Ashley

auxiliaries. She was born Jan. 29, 1927 in Kendallville to Lester and
Florence (McCreary) Tarlton. She married Delmer G. Shirley on March 17, 1
51 in LaGrange. He died May 25, 1999. Surviving are a son and

Anderson, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Leroy Butcher of Olney,

Shirley Sarah (Clemens) died last Monday at the home of Harvey Green

She was more than 72 years old and had been feeble for a long time. Her
daughter, Mrs. Curtis C. Stiver, Mr. Stiver, and a neighbor were talking with
her Monday. She collapsed while sitting in a chair and expired. She was born in Green
Twp March 4, 1852. She was one of a family of 12 children. She was twice married, both
husbands, Henry Secor and William Shirley, being dead. Surviving are 4 children,
William F. Shirley of Marshalltown, Ia., Mrs. J. B. Grawcock, Albion,
Rev. H. E. Secor of Carothers, Calif., and Mrs. Stiver, Mrs. Harvey Green.
Another daughter died 3 years ago. She leaves 3 brothers, Henry and Henderson of
Noble County, and James of North Platte, Neb. She lived in Noble County near
Albion most of her life. Her husband, William Shirley, died in 1909 and she
moved to Garrett in 1910 to live with her children. She was a member of the

Eagles. She was born Oct. 8, 1924 in Wolf Lake to Bruce and Eva Margaret (Seymoure)
Haney. On July 15, 1950 in Wolf Lake she married Frederick Duane Shisler.

Miss Thella, in Ligonier. He was a retired farmer and lifelong resident of the

Village Nursing Home in Ligonier. He was a farmer and a caretaker of

was born Feb. 13, 1924 in Noble County to Enoch and Gertrude (Doll) Shisler.
He married Alice Haney on July 15, 1950. She died May 30, 2005.

Nursing Home in Ligonier. She was born August 11, 1894, the daughter of Willard
and Alice (Campbell) Doll. She married Enoch Shisler July 27, 1918 in Kimmell.
He died March 2, 1976. She was a lifetime area resident and member of the Sparta
United Church of Christ in Kimmell. Surviving are three sons, Duane, R. 2,
Ligonier, John W., R. 1, LaOtto, and Fred D. of Dayton, Ohio; a sister,
Lois Fulk of Wolcottville; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A son,

Shisler John, 75, hardware merchant of Kimmell many years, died
July 19 at his home. He was born Aug. 25, 1864 in York Twp, the son of Frederick
and Hannah Jane (Norris) Shisler. On Nov. 26, 1892 he was married to Annie Butz,
who with 3 children survive, Enoch of York Twp, Mildred at home, and Mrs. Ruby
Himes of near Cromwell. Also a brother, Frank of Ligonier; 2 sisters, Mrs. Sadie
Williamson of Kimmell, and Mrs. Clara Pancratz of near Ligonier; and 4
grandchildren. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church at Kimmell.
Funeral was held Saturday at Sparta Church with burial in a nearby

Shisler Ralph, 83, 109 S. Main St., Ligonier, died Nov. 15 in the VA
Hospital in Fort Wayne from complications. He was born Oct. 27, 1892 in York
Twp, the son of Frank and Margaret M. (Lafong) Shisler and was a
lifetime resident of Ligonier. He was married to Vida Stiffler who died in 1934.
He was a retired employee of the Ligonier Post Office and was a WW I veteran and

Shisler Rebecca, daughter of Robert and Catherine Bradley Scott, was born
in Mount Eaton, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1834. She died at her home in Albion Jan. 8, 1929, having attained the age of 94 years, 3 months and 19
days. Death resulted from a fall a few days ago. She was the last of a family of
5 children, her brother Robert having died at his home in Wooster, Ohio
Dec. 23, 1928 at the age of 92. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church
at Mount Eaton at an early age and transferred her membership to the Albion
Methodist Church a few years ago. She was married to Thomas Shisler
Feb. 19, 1861. He died Jan. 17, 1891. She came to Albion in 1872 and for many
years engaged in the millinery business with her sister, Mary Scott. After the
death of her sister, she was associated in the same work for many years more
with Elizabeth Lash. Mrs. J. M. Reed of Albion is a niece. Funeral will be

Shisler Thella, 83, 109 S. Main St., Ligonier, died Thursday in
Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born June 8, 1900 in Noble County, she was the
daughter of Frank and Tilla Shisler. She was a lifetime resident of the area and
worked at Wirk Garment Co. before starting Shisler Telephone Answering Service.
Services will be Monday in Ulrey-Renner Funeral Home, Ligonier. Burial, Oak Park

Shisler Thomas was born in Ashland County, Ohio Dec. 4, 1828; died at his
residence in Albion Jan. 17, 1891, aged 62 years 1 month and 13 days.
He was married to Rebecca Scott Feb. 19, 1861. In April 1871 they came to Albion. He was a very trusty and careful clerk and not being in
business the late years of his life for himself, he was frequently employed by
the merchants of the place to assist them. His companion and her sister, Miss Mary Scott, who has made her home with
them a number of years, remain. Burial,

Shisley Mary, wife of John Shisley, was born Jan. 15, 1811 in Somerset
County, Pa.; and died April 9, aged 80 years 2 months and 24 days. She survived
her husband 18 months. She leaves 3 sons and one daughter. She was a member of

Shive Simon died May 10, 1887 at his home in Swan Twp. He
was born in Columbiana County, Ohio March 25, 1826. He married Rebecca Simon in
1848 and they settled in Noble County in 1851. Surviving are the widow and 5
daughters, Anna, Jennie, Mary A., Sarah C., and Susanna; and one son, Daniel.

Shively Annabelle L, 81, of Churubusco, died Jan. 10, 2010 at Parkview
Whitley Hospital. She was born Sept. 18, 1928 in Columbia City, a daughter
of Ralph and Faye (Clawson) Stickler. On January 4, 1947
she married Joe Shively. She was a member of the Blue River Church of the
Brethren in Whitley County. The surviving relatives include her husband; a
daughter Robin (Rick) Plasterer of Churubusco; two sons Bradley R. (Deb Jackson)
Shively and Byron R. Shively, both of Fort Wayne; her sister Jeanette Zumbrun of
Columbia City; and her three grandchildren Emily (K. J.) Mcaleesejergins, Philip

Shively David Allen, 62, St. Petersburg, Fla., former Smith Twp
resident, died Dec. 12 at the home of his mother, Mrs. Helen
Shively. He was born in Whitley County on April 29, 1920, the son of Esli and
Helen A. Egolf Shively. He was married to Helen Cobb who died Oct. 12, 1982. He
was the former owner and operator of the Klondike Ice Cream parlor in Columbia
City. He was employed by the Columbia City Dairy. They moved to Fla. in 1958
where he served as supervisor of the maintenance department for the Educational
System in St. Petersburg. He retired one year ago. He was a member of the First
Church of the Brethren at St. Petersburg. Survivors include 4 sons,
Stanley of Lakeland, Fla., Thomas of Johnson City, Tenn., Keith of Clearwater,
Fla., and Randy of Marianna, Fla.; 2 daughters, Mrs. Cindy Schuler and Mrs.

Shively Elva B, 90, died March 15, 1992 in Whitley County Hospital.
She was born near Nappanee on June 13, 1901, a daughter of Jay and Drue Wysong
Stuckman. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1919 and obtained her
teaching license at Goshen College. She received her BS degree from
Manchester College. On May 31, 1947 she married Floyd Shively and they
lived on a farm west of Merriam. He died April 26, 1961. She was a
member of the Blue River Church of the Brethren and Indiana Retired Teachers
Association. Surviving are 2 brothers, Guy of Nappanee, Roger of Big Lake;
a sister, Mrs. Harlan (Vesta) Franks of Avilla; and a stepdaughter. A

born in Green Twp, Noble County, to John and Mary Alice (Wright) Strouse.
She married Murry Shively December 25, 1920. He died in 1960. A 1918
graduate of Albion High School, she received her teacher's degree from
Manchester College. A lifetime resident of the area, she was a member of
Blue River Church of the Brethren. Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs. Dale
(Edith) Smith of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Glenn (June) Targgart of Albion, Mrs. Paul
(Joyce) Munk of Wippany, N.J., Mrs. Robert (Lois) Byer of Kimmell, and Mrs.

1919 she married Esli Shively. He died October 7, 1975. They had
lived on a farm near Round Lake. She was a member of Blue River Church of
the Brethren, Thorncreek Extension Club, and was the Smith Twp registerer for Old Settlers Day. Surviving are sons James
(Joe) of Columbia City and Charles (Don) of Albion; daughters, Mrs. Harold

Shively John H, 43, Round Lake, was found dead on April 16, 1978 in a
wooded portion of the family farm near Tri-Lakes. He had been missing since
January 6 of this year and was found by an organized search party. There was no
evidence of foul play. He was the son of Esli and Helen A. Egolf Shively and had
lived his entire life in the Noble-Whitley area. He was employed at Philips
Industrial Components in Albion. Survivors are his mother, Helen, R. 4, Columbia

Shively Mariellen, 85, of St. Elmo, Ill., died Nov. 3, 2004 at Friendship
Manor in St. Elmo. She was a secretary for Studebaker Corp. in South Bend
for 24 years and then was an office administrator for Memorial Hospital Nursing
School for 18 years, retiring in 1984. She was a graduate of Mishawaka
High School. She was born March 22, 1919 in Mishawaka to Harry G. and
Celia (Hursey) Ramsbey. On Nov. 14, 1983 in South Bend she married Charles
G. Shively. Surviving are her husband; 4 stepchildren; and a brother,
Harry Ramsbey Jr. of South Bend. She was preceded in death by a sister,
Kathryn Yoder, and a brother, Robert Ramsbey. Services Sunday at

Shively Paul B "Pete", 83, died Saturday in St. Joseph Medical
Center, Fort Wayne. He was born in Columbia City September 6, 1913 to
William H. and Stella (Black) Shively. On June 26, 1936 in Marion he
married Hilda Sloffer. He was a 1931 graduate of Churubusco High
School. In 1948 he and his brother, C. Allen, founded the Churubusco
Woodworking Co. He retired in 1979, selling the business to a longtime
associate, John Ford, in 1993. He was a member of Churubusco United
Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife; a son, Paul A. of Noblesville; 2
daughters, Mrs. Price (Shirley) Taulbee of North Webster, and Mrs. Tom (Sharon)
Clouse of Albion; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by 3 brothers, Jake, Allen and Chalmer. Funeral

Shively Samuel "Chalmer", 89 died Monday in Renaissance
Village, Whitley County. He was born in Churubusco on October 4, 1904 to
William M. and Stella Mae (Black) Shively. He married Velma Geiger in July
1923 in Michigan. She died in 1959. He married Mary Stanley on
November 9, 1975, in Oneco, Fla. She died in 1990. A lifetime
resident of the Churubusco area, he had formerly owned W.M. Shively & Sons
Road Construction Co. and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Blue
River Church of the Brethren. Surviving are 2 sons, Lee B. of Churubusco
and Bud L. of Angola; a stepdaughter; a brother, Paul B. of Churubusco; 6
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in

Retirement Center, North Manchester. She was born in Noble County on
February 10, 1894 to Sam Black. She attended Green Schoolhouse and married
Lawrence Shively November 25, 1911. She was a 40-year member of Blue River
Church of the Brethren. Her husband died January 12, 1964. Surviving
are sons Roger of Warsaw and Dale of Columbia City; daughters, Roeene LaRue of
Johnson City, Mrs. Walter (Esther) Yant of French Lick, Mrs. Thomas (Oliva) Toor
of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. James (Pearl) Baughman of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Ronald (Marceille) Helgesen of Kendallville; 29 grandchildren and several great and
great-great-grandchildren. A son, Noah; daughters Arlos Shively and

Shlater Betty J died in St. Joseph’s Hospital May 22. She was born
April 18, 1930 to Carl and Pauline Gibson Weigold of Whitley County. She married
Robert E. Shlater March 24, 1947 and they spent all their married life in
Churubusco. She was a nine-year employee of Weatherhead Co. in Columbia City and
a member of Churubusco United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband;
four sons, Stephen of Huntertown, Robert of Churubusco, William of Fort Wayne
and James at home; one daughter, Sondra at home; three grandchildren; her
parents; one sister, Mrs. A. Eugene Gregory of Warsaw; and three brothers, Carl,
William and James, all of Fort Wayne. A son, Richard C., preceded her in death

Sunday at Albion. He had been in failing health
for a year or more and about two weeks ago became violently insane and was taken
to Albion for care. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, his father, two

She was born in Avilla, the daughter of Joseph Deuitch. Her husband Charles died
in 1939. She was retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital after 18 years in the
laundry department. Surviving are one son, Joseph C., Fort Wayne; four
daughters, Wanetta Hinshaw, Fort Wayne, Agnes Crane, Columbia City, Esther

Shobe Henry was born in Ross County, Ohio June 12, 1812 and came with his
parents to Elkhart County in 1830 and Noble County in 1831, where he resided
until his death, which occurred Sept. 22, 1877 from chronic inflammation of the
stomach. He was married to Amanda Neely Dec. 31, 1840. He leaves a widow and 6
children. His father was one of the very early settlers of the county and died
many years ago. He lived upon the old homestead until failing health induced him
to sell his farm and remove to Ligonier, where he died. > 1877 ^ 10-3-1877
Shobe Jennie, 66, wife of Dr. W. A. Shobe of this city, died April 26 in Methodist Hospital, Fort Wayne, following a serious
operation for removal of a growth in the stomach. She was a daughter of the late
Orlando Kimmell of Sparta Twp and had lived in Noble County and Ligonier all her
life. Surviving are her husband; 2 brothers, Claude and Morton of Sparta
Twp; 4 sisters, Mrs. Willis Kinnison of Garden City, Kans., Miss Lillian at
home, Mrs. Martin Beck and Mrs. Ed Eagles of Albion. Funeral will be held from

Shobe Mary died at her home on Cavin Street in this city. She
was born in Ohio in 1822 and died May 18, 1901, aged 79 years and 10 days.
Her husband Silas Shobe died on Aug. 19, 1889.
She was one of the early settler of Perry’s Prairie and had been a
resident of our city for more than half a century.
She was the mother of ten children, six of whom are left to mourn:

Henry of Elkhart, Mrs. Frank Stuart of South Chicago, Taylor C. and Charley H.
Shobe of this city. She went to Chicago last fall as had been her custom for some time to spend the winter with
her daughters, dividing the time between Mrs. Stuart of Chicago and Mrs. Henry
of Elkhart. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Shobe Silas was born in Fayette County, Ohio, Sept. 26, 1820 and came to

Shobe Sara C, daughter of David and Susan Carr, was born Feb. 5, 1850 in
LaGrange County Indiana. She died in Ligonier, Indiana on May 21,
1929. She was the youngest in a family of 8 children, 7 growing to
adulthood. She was married to Taylor Shobe on March 12, 1872. They
had two sons, George and Robert. George is of Mishawaka and Robert of
Ligonier. She was a charter member of Ligonier OES and was a member of
Methodist Episcopal Church. * 1929
Shobe Taylor C of Ligonier died Saturday. He was a brother
and for many years a business partner of Charles Shobe, who, in his business of
buying and shipping horses, makes frequent trips to this city. Funeral was at
Ligonier Tuesday. He also leaves 4 sisters, 3 of whom reside in Ligonier. He was
a son of the late Silas Shobe, one of the early citizens of our neighboring town

Dec. 18. He came to Ligonier with his parents when about 2 years of age and has
resided there since that time, retiring from a lucrative practice several years

member of Ligonier Elks Lodge, the Noble County Medical Society and American

Shock Harold W, 83, died Friday in Kingston Health Care Center of
Ligonier. He was born August 17, 1912 in Syracuse to Noah and Caddie
Shock. He was a member of the 1930 Syracuse High School basketball team
that played in the IHSAA semi-state tournament. On August 18, 1934 in
Ligonier he married Ruth Lundy. He was a farmer, a Farm Bureau Co-op
manager, a member of Indiana Farm Bureau and a member of the Ligonier
Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Douglas of Punta
Gorda, Fla., and Kim of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 2 daughters, Marilyn Haas of
Anderson and Marcia Carpenter of Madeira Beach, Fla.; one brother, Orville of
Kendallville; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded

Shock Noah, 68, of Ligonier, ended his life Sunday by
stepping in front of a westbound B&O Railroad freight train west of Cromwell
at Shock’s farm in the northeast part of Kosciusko County east of Lake
Wawasee. He had been in a nervous state, but not in ill health, in recent weeks.
He did not leave a note but had mentioned suicide on other occasions. The
railroad agent said that crewmen on the train told him that Mr. Shock left his
car which was parked nearby and climbed a fence to the right of way. He stood by
the tracks apparently waiting for the train to go by. When the train was within
20 or 30 feet of him he stepped out on the tracks. He was born in Turkey Creek
Twp, Kosciusko County April 3, 1881, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Cripe)
Shock. He resided in Ligonier during the past 18 years, having moved there from
his farm. He was married on April 3, 1907 to his wife Caddie, who survives with
2 sons, Orval of Kendallville and Harold of Royal Center, Ind.; 2 brothers,
William of north of Warsaw, and Elmo of near North Webster; and 5 grandchildren.

Shock Orval B, 89, died Monday in Carriage Manor, Goshen. He was
born in Kosciusko County September 3, 1907 to Noah and Caddie (Bentz)
Shock. His first wife, Dorothy Whitcomb, preceded him in death. In
1988 in Kendallville he married Helen Harter. He was a retired oil
distributor for Marathon Oil Co. and a member of Trinity Church United Methodist
where he served as janitor. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Rosemary
Werling of Fort Wayne; a son, Argil H. of Fort Wayne; 2 stepchildren; 3
grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by a brother, Harold; and a sister, Velma. Funeral

Shock Ralph Gerald, 63, of R. 1, Cromwell, died April 7 at
the VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was a lumber sorter at Jorg & McDonald
Lumber Co. at Ligonier. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II and was a member of
Wilmot Church of God. He is survived by his widow, Artie; and 3 sons, all at

Shock Rosa Mae, 79, died Tuesday in New Paris at the home
of a son, Ralph. Funeral will be Saturday at Wilmot Church of God.

Shock Ruth L, 80, died Saturday in Goshen Hospital. She was born
January 15, 1917 in Ligonier to Hugh and Mattie Lundy. On August 18, 1934
in Ligonier she married Harold Shock. He died July 5, 1996. She had
worked for Wirk Garment in Ligonier and as a library aide at Syracuse High
School and was a member of Ligonier Presbyterian Church, serving as church
secretary. Surviving are 2 sons, H. Douglas of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Kim
of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 2 daughters, Marilyn Haas of Anderson and Marcia
Carpenter of Madeira Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Jane Schwab of Albion; 4
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a

Shock Stacey Anne, 7, Fort Worth, Texas, died Friday at Fort Worth
Children’s Hospital of Reyes Syndrome. Born April 14, 1976, she was the
daughter of Douglas and Cynthia (Miller) Shock. Douglas was a former Ligonier
resident before living in Muncie, then to Fort Worth. Survivors include
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shock, R. 2, Syracuse, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert

Shockey Queenie K, 87, 310 Pontiac St., Ligonier, died
Wednesday at her residence. Born March 27, 1900 in Fayette County, W. Va., she
was the daughter of William and Rosa (Writson) Cotcamp. On Oct. 2, 1920 she
married Eldridge Shockey in Fayette County. He died in 1984. She moved to
Ligonier 3 years ago and was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren,
Fayette County. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Porter of
Ligonier; a sister, Ruth Smith of Rocky Mountain, N.C.; 3 brothers, Quinton of
Fayetteville, W. Va., Corbit of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and Edward of Lakeland,

Shoda Aden Henry, 74, died Thursday in St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort
Wayne, while visiting his wife. He was born in Kokomo January 6, 1916, the
son of Earl and Eva (Truman) Shoda. On September 17, 1937 in Fort Wayne he
married Ruth Jetmore. He worked for Janitors Supply in Fort Wayne and
later for the Churubusco Post Office. He was an auto salesman for 15 years
at Floyd's Auto Sales in Churubusco, retiring in 1980. He was a member of
Churubusco F&AM. Surviving are his mother, Eva Piedmont in Avilla; his
wife; a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Carolyn) Bonar of Albion; 2 sons, Steve of rural
Churubusco, and Keith of Fort Wayne; 2 sisters, Pauline Dorman of Fort Wayne and

Shoemaker Charles E, Avilla, died March 10, 2003 at the emergency room of
Parkview Noble Hospital. He was born in Defiance, Ohio September 27, 1931
to Irvin and Carma (Treaster) Shoemaker. He married Kay Huth February 14,
1971 in Wolcottville. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and one
son-in-law, Sandra Kay and Robert Dean of Kendallville and Barbara J. Emery of
Hudson; 3 sons, Tracey and Terry Fogelson of Avilla and Charles Shoemaker Jr. of
LaOtto; 5 grandchildren, Donna Slone, Kay Oakes, Becky and Anson Shoemaker and
Robert E. Dean Jr.; 2 great-grandchildren, Austin Slone and Gabriel Oakes; and a
brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Mary Shoemaker of Fort Wayne.
Preceding him in death were a son, Steven; and 2 brothers, Jerry and
Larry. He was a truck driver and retired from CMW in Kendallville,
currently working for PTI in Garrett. He had retired from the U.S. Navy as
an EOC with 42 years of service. He had lived in the Avilla community for
31 years. He was a 1950 graduate of Elmhurst High School, a member of the
National Model Railroader Association, American Legion Post 86, Moose Lodge 1301

Shoemaker Earlene (Haney), 44, of 11407 Auburn Rd., Fort Wayne, died Thursday in Parkview Hospital. A native of Albion, she had lived in
Fort Wayne most of her life. She had been a librarian 20 years, most recently
with the Tecumseh Branch of the Fort Wayne Public Library. She is survived by

was born Feb. 8, 1903 to Menzo and Mary (Carrick) Graham. She married
Homer Shoemaker. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Shoemaker Homer, 88, of 641 Dowling St., Kendallville, died Monday at Continental Convalescent Center in Indianapolis. He was born in
Geneva Aug. 4, 1899, the son of Amos and Olive (Ortman) Shoemaker. On June 5,
1948 in Fort Wayne he married Gertrude Graham, who died in Nov. 1985. He moved
from Fort Wayne to Kendallville in 1959 and was a retired machine operator for
Morrill Motors, Fort Wayne. He was a member of Knights of Pythias and Modern
Woodmen. Surviving are 2 nieces, Mrs. Dale (Doris) Combs and Mrs. Bill (Jane)
Forker of Kendallville; a sister, Dorothy Blair, and a brother, Robert, both of
Indianapolis. One sister and 4 brothers preceded him in death. Graveside

Shoemaker Irvin T was an Auburn native and had lived in Fort Wayne 31
years. He retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad after 42 years’ service. He
had been employed at Carrico Furniture’s south store and was a member of the

Shoemaker Joe Allen, 55, Ind. 9, Columbia City, died
Wednesday in Whitley County Hospital. He was born Sept. 19, 1932 in Warsaw, the
son of William and Doris (Flohr) Shoemaker. He married Frances E. Haney in
Albion on June 2, 1957. She died Jan. 2, 1979. He married Verna Bearman on Dec.
19, 1981. She died Sept. 17, 1984. He had lived in Warsaw, Fort Wayne and
Hoagland before moving to Columbia City in 1984. He was a 1951 graduate of
Warsaw High School and ITT before entering the Army where he served in the
Korean Conflict. He was an engineer at Navistar and was a member of Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. Surviving are his parents; 2 sons, Joe A. of
Richmond and William E. of Columbia City; a stepdaughter, Pam Butlemeier of
Hoagland; 2 stepsons, Tom Bearman of Hoagland and Terry Bearman of Fort Wayne; 2

vehicle accident in Noble County. He was born in Fort Wayne and was a clerk for
the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles license branch in New Haven. Surviving are

and Kay Shoemaker of Avilla; his grandparents, Carma Shoemaker and Art and

Shoner William C, 84, of 6701 S. Anthony in Fort Wayne, died
Tuesday at the Lutheran Home, Fort Wayne. He was born in Garrett March 2, 1900,
the son of Charles A. and Ida M. (McBride) Shoner. On April 12, 1924 in Grand
Rapids, Mich. he married Wilma Johnson who died March 25, 1970. He was a
Kendallville resident for many years before moving to Fort Wayne in 1947. He
retired after 41 years as assistant road foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad
and was a WW I Navy veteran. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church and
the American Legion. Surviving are 2 daughters, Anne Stockton of Kendallville,
Elaine Bonewitz of South Bend; a son, Richard of Danville, Calif.; 5

Columbia City, died Monday at her residence. She was born in Whitley County June
11, 1908, the daughter of Arthur and Elsie (Parker) Goodman. On June 13, 1924,
she married Glenn Shook, who died Feb. 5, 1985. A graduate of Columbia City High
School, she moved from Whitley County to Kendallville in Dec. 1984. She had been
employed at Shook’s Dairy Queen, Columbia City and was a member of Agape
Fellowship, Kendallville, a charter member of American War Mothers, Columbia
City, Chapter No. 572 O.E.S. Surviving are a son, Robert L. of Kendallville; 2
daughters, Mrs. William (Betty) Helfrich of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Calvin (Jo Ann)

Shook Nelson Jacob, 80, who had practiced medicine in Noble and DeKalb
counties the last 52 years, died from a stroke of paralysis Monday at
the home of his son, Nevin, of southwest of Corunna where he had made his home
since 1934. His son is the only survivor. His wife, Angela, died in Jan.

Shook Robert L, 73, died March 4, 2004 at Parkview Noble Hospital.
He operated the Dairy Queen in Columbia City 1954-1957; the Dairy Queen in
Kendallville 1957-1973; Shook Arctic-Kawasaki in Kendallville 1971-1977; and
Shook's Lounge 1976-1999. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
in Kendallville and the Elks Club. He was born Jan. 30, 1931 near Columbia
City, the son of Glenn and Ellen (Goodman) Shook. He graduated from
Larwill High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean
Conflict. On Dec. 29, 1952 in Wai Pahu, Hawaii, he married Mary Lou
Lemon. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and John
Henney of Kendallville and Cathy and Ernie Valentine of Big Long Lake; 2 sons
and daughters-in-law, Ted and Kim and Mick and Sandy of Kendallville; 2 sisters
and brothers-in-law, Betty and Bill Helfrich of North Manchester; and JoAnn and
Cal DeLor of Dearborn, Mich.; 7 grandchildren, Joshua Henney and his wife, Ava,
Sarah and Mary Henney, Robert, Elizabeth and Katherine Shook, and Jessica
Valentine. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Shook.

Shook Roy W, 85, 323 W. 2nd St., Auburn, died Saturday in LaGrange County Hospital. Born in Wayne Twp July 12,
1886, he was the son of George and Lydia Brundige Shook. He had been a resident
of Auburn since 1927. On Dec. 24, 1905 he was married in Hudson to Cloe Ringler,
who died July 22, 1958. He was a retired painter and decorator and was a member
of the First Methodist Church of Auburn. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Oren
(Mildred) Coney, 311 E. Harding St.,; 2 sons, Russell, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and

Shook William "Glenn", 80, of 210 Henry St.,
Kendallville, died Tuesday at McCray Hospital. Born Dec.
2, 1904 in Tipton, he was the son of Elmer S. and Margaret (McCullough) Shook.
On June 13, 1924 he married Ellen Goodman. The family moved to Columbia City in
1911 and he graduated in 1924 from Columbia City High School. A farmer, he
retired in 1973 and moved to a new home at Baugher Lake northeast of Etna where
he lived until moving to Kendallville Dec. 16, 1984. He was a member of the
Ormas Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; a son, Robert L. of Kendallville;
2 daughters, Mrs. William (Betty) Helfrich of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Calvin (Jo
Ann) DeLor of Detroit, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

1957 at his home at Skinner Lake from a heart ailment. He moved to this
community about 20 years ago from Fort Wayne where he had been employed as a

High School. Surviving are the widow, Pearl; 2 daughters, Mrs. Thelma Savage and

He was born in Hindman, KY, Feb 5, 1965, the son of Bill and Sylvia
(Sloane) Short, who survive in KY. He moved to Wolcottville from KY 4
years ago and was employed by Glasstech in Middlebury. Surviving with
his parents are 8 sisters, all in KY; and 4 brothers, including Gary

Short Jackie Lee, 17, of Ligonier, died Sept. 13, 2004 at Parkview
Hospital in Fort Wayne from injuries in a traffic accident. A student at
West Noble High School, he worked at McDonald's in Ligonier. He was born
Sept. 22, 1986 in LaGrange to Charles Jr. and Donna (Kemplin) Short.
Surviving are his parents; 3 brother, his twin, Christopher, William and Charles
III; a sister, Amber; grandparents, Mary and Emery Gibson of Rome City, Bernard

Short Roy D, 76, Indianapolis, once a school teacher, died Oct. 12, 1970
in the VA Hospital, Indianapolis. Services will be Thursday in Shirley Brothers
Irving Hill Chapel. Entombment, Washington Park East Mausoleum. A
graduate of Ball State University in 1933, he had taught in high schools at
Garrett and Winamac and at St. Paris, Ohio. He also taught in Springfield and
Portsmouth, Ohio Business Colleges. He was a WW I Navy veteran and a member of
American Legion Post 38. He had been a druggist at Elwood until he retired in
1961. Survivors include the widow, Fannie E.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Blomgren of

McCray Hospital. He was born June 26, 1926 in Mousie, Ky. to Wilts and Ellie
(Slone) Short. On Aug. 28, 1953 in Lackey, Ky. he married Janice Patton. A
27-year resident of the area, he was a retired machinist of Reliable Tool &
Machine Co. Surviving are his wife; 4 sons, Darrell of Kendallville, Felix of
Rome City, and Wilts and Phillip at home; 7 sisters, Marie Sparkman and Jeanette
Wicker of Floyd County, Ky., Dolly Hayes, Goldie Ours and Loretta Sizemore of
Knott County, Ky., Thelma Faye Whitt of Homer, Mich., and Joyce Bentley of
Albion, Mich.; a brother, Roy of Knott County, Ky.; and 4 grandchildren. Two

Short Sally, 86, of Rome City, died June 1, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born in Leburn, Kentucky, on June 7, 1924, to Green and Polly Ann
(Slone) Slone. She married John Short on November 13, 1939, in Hindman, Kentucky, and he died August 8, 1990.
Sally was employed with No-Sag in Kendallville and Starcraft in Emma.
She was a member of the House of Prayer in Kendallville.
Survivors include 5 daughters, Beverly and Manis Sparkman of Rome City,
Josephine and Kenneth Johnson, Mary Ann and Jesse Handshoe, Charlene and Colson Sizemore and Debra and Fred Kline,
all of Kendallville; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 4
great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Glenn Sparkman, on August 6, 2006; her
brothers, Allen, Russell, Nokomis, Gilbert and Elbert Slone; and her sisters,

Short Timothy S "Tim", 19, of R. 1, Rome City died
Saturday in Parkview Hospital as a result of injuries received Oct.
31 in a motorcycle-truck accident on U. S. 6 and Ind. 9 in Rome City. Born in
Lackey, Ky. Nov. 9, 1959, he was the son of Russell and Janice (Patton) Short.
He had lived most of his life in the Rome City area. Survivors include his
parents at R. 1, Rome City; a grandmother, Mrs. Elly Short of Mousie, Ky.; and 4

had retired from Reliable tool in Kendallville and was a member of Harbor of
Love Baptist Church, Kendlalville. He was born Feb. 25, 1932 in Slone
Fork, Ky., to Fulton and Merthie (Thornsbury) Short. He married Shelvia
Jean Salisbury on July 15, 1953 in Hindman. Surviving are his wife; his
mother in Hindman; a son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Kathy of Kendallville; 4
sisters, Alvanell Coburn, Sue Ramey, Anna Slone and Jewel Martin of Ky.; one
brother, Rondall of Wayland, Ky.; 2 grandchildren and their spouses, Deborah and

his residence. He was born in Pippa Passes, Ky., December 14, 1932 to
Hasadore and Ibby (Sparkman) Short. He had lived in Ligonier the past 6
years and retired from Midwest Molding in Wolcottville, previously working for
Carbide Tool in Topeka and McCray Refrigerator in Kendallville. Surviving
are 2 sons, Michael and Wesley "Chuck" Jr. of Ligonier; 2 sisters,
Hasanell Blankenship of Ubanks,Ky., and Anna Combs of Ligonier; and 5

Shortz Fannie (Easterday), 90, a member of the Albion High School class
of 1918 and a former teacher in Noble County schools, died May 9, 1988 in
Wildwood Health Care Center, Indianapolis. A graduate of Tri-State and Ball
State Universities, she taught for 38 years in Stanley School in Green Twp,
Albion and Wawaka and later in Fortville. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Roy B., who at one time ran a grocery store in Albion where the Noble
County American is now located. A member of Christ Lutheran Church, she served
for 12 years as a Republican precinct committeewoman in Noble County. Only

Shortz Gerald, 62, died Sunday in a hospital in Vero Beach, Fla. He
practiced medicine in Kendallville from about 1935 to 1942 at which time he left
for Army duty at Fort Benning, Ga. He was a major in the Medical Corps. He was
born in Albion Feb. 8, 1908 and was graduated from Indiana University. He was
married to Lorena Bechtold and resided on N. Riley St. and Lake Park Dr.
Surviving are the wife; a daughter, Mrs. Gretchen Thomas, Grosse Point Woods,
Mich.; 2 sons, Dr. Gerald, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Dr. Roger, Miami; 3

Shoudel Adolph "Spike", 66, died Sunday at the Veteran’s
Hospital in Fort Wayne. A native of Waterloo, he was born November 13, 1915 to
George and Marie (Huff) Shoudel. He married Mildred Bry July 27, 1946 in Auburn.
Surviving are his mother, Avilla; his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Betty Smith,
Bryan, Ohio, Mrs. Shirley Hile, Eustis, Fla., Mrs. Mary Price and Mrs.
Linda Miller, both of Butler; one son, Jerry, Butler; one brother, George,
Champaign, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Bernadette Meyer, Avilla, Mrs. Agnes Ball,
Auburn, and Mrs. Mary Weimer, Fort Wayne; and 10 grandchildren. Two brothers and
a grandson preceded him in death. He served in WW II and was a member of the
Butler American Legion and the Immaculate Conception Church in Auburn. Services

Shoudel George M, 67, a farmer residing four miles southeast of Auburn,
died Wednesday at the Dr. J. A. Souder Hospital in
Auburn. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis Tuesday at Warner
Automotive Parts division factory. A lifelong resident of DeKalb County, he
married Marie Hoff May 24, 1910. Surviving besides the widow are six children:
Mrs. Edmund Ball of Auburn, Adolph J. and George Jr. of Auburn, Clarence of
Detroit, Mrs. Herman Meyer of Avilla, and Miss Mary J. Shoudel at home; three
brothers, Mike, Frank and John, all of near Waterloo; and three sisters, Miss
Lena Shoudel and Mrs. Kathryn Schiffli, both of near Waterloo, and Mrs. Caroline
Schortgen of near Hamilton. A son, Alfred, died 10 years ago. He was a member of
the Immaculate Conception Church of Auburn. Services were Saturday at

Hospital. She was born in Stroh July 7, 1900, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
George Martin. On June 25, 1921 in Albion she married Harry E. Shoup, who died
in April 1974. She moved to Kendallville 68 years ago from Stroh and was
employed many years at Schmidt Baker and by Morris Five & Dime. She was a
member of First Christian Church and Rebekah Lodge in Kendallville. Her survivor
is a son Richard L., Kendallville. Two sister, Ella Gump and Vera Shoup,

Kendallville 53 years, he was a retired woodworker and member of English
Lutheran Church in Goshen and the WW I Veterans Organization. Surviving are his

Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had worked for McCray Refrigeration and retired
in 1993 from Hoosier Wire after 16 years. He served in the National

(Martin) Shoup. His father died April 21, 1974 and his mother died Feb.

Shourds Martha M was born at Spencerport, Monroe County, New York Dec. 2,
1840; died at her home one and a half miles south of Rome City, May 18, aged 56
years, 5 months and 16 days. She came to Indiana in 1866, locating in
Kendallville, making her home with her sister, Mrs. L. F. Hitchcock and family,
where she commenced teaching school. She also continued teaching in Avilla, Rome
City and Goshen, after which she went to Iowa, where she remained 4 years,
returning to Indiana to the home of her deceased sister to care for 2 orphan
children left by her sister and husband, George and Mary Clock. She united with
the Presbyterian Church in 1870 and worshipped with the M. E. Church of Rome

married Una Campbell. He moved to Albion in 1947. He was a retired principal for
Wolf Lake School and Albion High School, retiring in 1978. He was a former
member of the Albion Lions Club, Retired Teachers Association and Board of Trap

educated in the county schools and followed teaching for many years and was a
member of the Lutheran Church. He lived in this community many years and was
twice married, both wives preceding him in death. Surviving are one brother and

1961. She had worked at Essex Wire in Kendallville and was a waitress at

Center to Warren and Maxine (Addis) Hursey. She married Jim Showen on Oct.
13, 1961 in Kendallville. Surviving are her husband; a daughter and

Showen Russell "Lee", 26, of Marion, died Sunday in Huntington College Campus fountain. He and Carol Escher, who were to be
married Aug. 16, died from accidental electrocution in the campus fountain. He
was born in Kendallville Jan. 24, 1960 to Charles E. and Marion (Beckley) Showen.
His parents preceded him in death. He was a sophomore at Purdue University
Pre-Med School and active in Highland Bethel Evangelical Mennonite Church in
Fort Wayne. Surviving are 2 sisters, Susan Morr of Kendallville, and Vickie

Shrader Dennis W, 29, 603 Water St., Ligonier, died
Wednesday from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been talking
on the phone to his wife, Sandra, from whom he had been separated for a short
time for about 20 or 30 minutes prior to the shooting. He apparently had
threatened to shoot himself while they were talking and she heard a
"crack" as the conversation ended. He was born Aug. 8, 1947 to Robert
and Pernia (Billips) Shrader in Richland, Va. He married Sandra Christlieb on
March 12, 1966 in Tazewell, Va. He had been living in the Ligonier area the past
10 years and was employed at Lyon and Greenleaf Co., Inc. He was a member of
Northside Church of Christ, Ligonier. He is survived by his parents; wife; a

Shreve Robert, 74, died February 20 in Cincinnati. Formerly of Fort
Wayne, he became well-known as host of the Cincinnati TV show "Bob Shreve's
Past Prime Playhouse." He had his own radio show in Fort Wayne before
moving to Cincinnati. He married Kendallville native, Mary Jane Keller,
who graduated from Kendallville High School in 1932. She was the only
child of Ralph and Gladys (Cluff) Keller and was a descendant of the Iddings
family. Her paternal grandfather, Jacob Keller, founded the Noble County
Bank in 1889. Surviving are his wife; a son, Robert of Cincinnati; and a

she married Orland Shriner Sept. 1, 1934 in Noble County. He preceded her
in death. Surviving are 2 daughters, Lucille Huyghe of Columbia City and
Patsy Champion of Silver Lake; a sister, Phyllis Owen of Avilla; a brother,
Billy O. of Mich.; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One
granddaughter, Angela Ginter, also preceded her in death. Services Monday

Shriner Patricia, about 27, wife of Noble County deputy sheriff, Robert
Shriner, died Dec. 14, 1967 in their Albion home. Surviving are the
husband; 2 sons, Robert Jr. 5, and Christopher 2; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Sommer of South Bend; 2 brothers; and 5 sisters. Last rites were Dec. 16.

Shropshire Kenneth Christian, 39, of Kendallville, died Sept. 2, 2008 at
Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Dec. 5, 1968 in Fort Wayne to
Kenneth and Cynthia (Blomenberg) Shropshire. He married Tina Smith on Aug.
28, 1998 in Steuben County. Surviving are his wife; his mother and his
father; a sister, Amy Wasikowski of Orland; and 2 stepsisters. Services

Shroyer Bernard J, 38, longtime resident of Avilla, was killed Saturday in a motorcycle-truck collision in Mesa. Word has been received
here that Shroyer, who moved to Mesa from Avilla a year and a half ago, was en
route home from work at an aircraft plant, when the motorcycle he was driving
struck a truck parked on an overpass. He was born October 10, 1928, was employed
at International Harvester in Fort Wayne for several years and was self-employed
as a carpenter in Avilla before moving to Mesa. He and Janis Arlene Whan,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Whan, were married Nov. 3, 1950 in the Hopewell
Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Churubusco High School and the son of
the late Harry Shroyer and Mrs. Lawrence (Florence) Forest, Route 4, Columbia
City. Surviving in addition to the wife and mother are three children, Lana Jo,
12, Michael, 8, and Dennis Max, 3, all at home; two brothers, Ray of Fort Wayne,
and Larry of Kendallville; two sisters, Mrs. Teddy Sutorius, Yoder, and Mrs.
Richard Wood, Zanesville. A brother, Calvin, was killed in 1933 when struck by a
truck while riding a bicycle. Mrs. Shroyer’s parents and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Shirk, all of Avilla, were en route to Arizona to visit the Shroyers when the
fatal accident occurred. Mrs. Whan had talked to her daughter Friday night,
calling her from New Mexico to inform her they would be arriving the following
day. Other relatives expecting to attend the funeral rites are Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Miller of Fort Wayne, formerly of Avilla, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Whan and
Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Weaver, Avilla; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whan of Kendallville.

Shroyer Calvin, 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shroyer of Green
Twp, was fatally injured Sept. 17 when he was struck by a truck on the highway a short distance from his home. He died at the
Lutheran Hospital. He had been in the habit of riding his bicycle to the county
line where he boarded the school bus to come to Churubusco. He was a junior in
the local high school. Shortly after he reached the highway he met a west-bound
truck and the driver said the boy waved to him. The trucker looked back just
after passing him and saw him lying on the pavement. It is thought the suction
of the truck pulled him down. The body was brought to the Sonday Funeral Home;

Shroyer Christopher Lee, 16, was one of four people killed in a
two-vehicle accident June 6 north of Union City, Mich. He was born in Goshen
Aug. 15, 1967, the son of Larry Lee and Susan (Wogomon) Shroyer. Surviving are
his parents; a brother Jonathan Lee, at home; a half-brother, Larry Eugene
Shroyer, with the U. S. Air Force, Grand Forks, N.D.; the paternal grandmother,

Shroyer Evelyn M, 97, died June 5, 2007 at Provena Sacred Heart Home in
Avilla. She was born March 25, 1910 in Whitley County to Oscar and Etta
(Rowland) Fulk. She married Howard C. Shroyer on July 5, 1927. He
died Sept. 17, 1973. Surviving are 3 sisters, Eldora McCoy of Albion,
Laurel Wilson of Uniondale and Gertrude Fulk of Albion. She was also
preceded in death by a daughter, Agnes Totten in 1993; 6 brothers, Dan, Carl,
Jesse, Howard, Guy and Robert Fulk; and an infant sister, Sarah Fulk.

Shroyer Glenn W, 79, of R. 2, Ligonier, died Friday in VA
Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Born Aug. 24, 1904 in Rome City to William A. and
Carrie Bell (Potts), he married Mary Oldine Gaerte June 11, 1961
in Valentine. He was a retired machinist from International Harvester and a WW
II Navy veteran. He was a member of Albion American Legion Post 246. Survivors
include his wife; a daughter, Betty Stuller of Auburn; 2 stepdaughters, Helen
Stangland of Albion and Joan Harroff of Wolf Lake; a son, Glenn D. of
Fort Wayne; a sister, Thelma Snyder of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, Walter of
Ligonier; a grandchild and 4 great-grandchildren. Services Tuesday in

Shroyer Mary O, 83, of Kimmell, died Thursday in Whitley County
Hospital. She was born in Noble County on June 15, 1910 to Clarence and
Dora (Smith) Gaerte. She married Ace D. Erdly in 1927. He
died in 1960. On June 11, 1961 in Valentine, she married Glenn W. Shroyer,
who died in 1984. She had lived in Noble County since 1978.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Helen Stangland and Joan Harroff of Kimmell; a
brother, Forrest Gaerte of Pierceton; a sister, Mrs. Wayne (Esther) Mowry of
Albion; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by a son, Jimmie Erdly; 3 brothers and a sister. Graveside services

City on Wednesday of this week and was buried at Osborn Cemetery on Friday the

Shroyer Ray C, 70, of Albion, died March 7, 1994 at Lutheran Hospital,
Fort Wayne. He was born December 2, 1923 in Whitley County, a son of Harry
and Florence (Campbell) Shroyer. A lifetime resident of Churubusco, he
married Ann Smith on June 10, 1961. He was employed by General Electric in
Fort Wayne for 38 1/2 years, retiring in 1980. A WW II veteran of the U.S.
Air Force, he was a member of Churubusco American Legion Post 157 and of the New
Life Fellowship Church of God, Columbia City. Surviving are his wife; 4
daughters, Mrs. Roger (Arlene) Siler of Fort Wayne, Mrs. James (Marge) Heckman
of Columbia City, Karen Wogoman of Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, Sharon Smith of
Avilla; 2 sons, Steve and Phillip of Fort Wayne; 20 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ted (Kay) Sutorious of Yoder, and Hilda
Wood of Michigan. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers. Services

Friday in Whitham Hospital, Lebanon. He was born Jan. 15, 1912 in Elkhart, the
son of William and Carrie (Potts) Shroyer. He moved from Ligonier to Lebanon in
Jan. and was a self-employed house painter. His only survivor is a sister,
Thelma Snyder Kindig of Clearwater, Fla. Graveside services Tuesday in

Shrull Maude A, 91, Brimfield resident for many years, died Thursday at Hillside Nursing Home near Bryan, Ohio. She was born in Brimfield
and was a member of Brimfield United Methodist Church. Her husband, Woster

Shrull, Montpelier, Ohio; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One son,

Shrull Woster, 84, (b. 10-21-1874 - d. 9-24-1959) a native of
Noble County and lifelong resident of the Brimfield community, died Thursday in
his home of a heart ailment. He was a retired NYC Railroad employee. Surviving
are the widow, Maude; a son, Leslie of Monroe, Mich.; 3 grandchildren and 2
