Schnapp Elizabeth, 35, wife of Augustus Schnapp, died at her home on W.

Schneider Blanche, 405 E. Wayne St., died Saturday in the
home of her son, Moses L. Guthrie, 230 E. Wayne St. Born Aug. 28, 1889 in
Indiana, the daughter of Sylus and Elva (Douglas) Warren, she had moved to
Kendallville 5 years ago from Chicago. Her husband, George P., died in 1957.
Surviving also are 3 more sons, Harold, Lafayette, John L. of Colorado, Cyrus
L., Kendallville; one daughter, Mrs. Anna Leitch, Bronson, Mich.; 11
grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral today in

Schneider Carroll, 73, was born Sept. 14, 1900 in Neoga, Ill. and was a
retired star route carrier. He resided at 413 Matthews St., Kendallville and
died Saturday in the VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. Survivors include three daughters,
Caroline Freeman, Avilla, Beatrice Newman, Kendallville, and Hazel Harper,
Albion; two sons, Carroll F Jr., Kendallville, and Thomas Lee, Lima, Ohio; and
18 grandchildren. Services May 29 in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home.

Schneider Christian W, 35, was a son of Carroll and Bertha (Padgett)
Schneider. He married, June 6, 1965 in Kendallville, Sylvia Davis, who survives.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge 1301 in Kendallville and IBEW Local 1392. He
was dead on arrival June 7 at McCray Hospital. He suffered an
apparent heart attack while working near Albion. He was a journeyman lineman for
N. G. Gilbert Line Construction. Survivors also include the parents and two
daughters, Christine and Ginger; two sons, Nevada and David; two sisters, Mrs. Russel
(Caroline) Freeman, R. 2, and Mrs. John (Hazel) Harper, Albion; two
brothers, Carroll Jr., Kendallville, and Thomas in Ohio; one half-sister and
four half-brothers. Services in Berhalter-Preston Mortuary. Burial,

Schneider Geraldine L, 70, Arcola, died Friday in Parkview Hospital. She
owned and operated Schneider Green House in Arcola for 28 years. Surviving are
her husband, Robert; four daughters, Anita Schroeder, Tulsa, Okla., Marcia
Brindel and Lynette Freeze, Fort Wayne, and Janice Kemper of Battle Creek,
Mich.; three brothers, Howard Dafforn, Avilla, Ray Dafforn, Fort Wayne, and
George Dafforn Jr. of Churubusco; and 10 grandchildren. Services Monday in

Schneider Hilda L, 88, of Fort Wayne, died April 3, 2009 in Parkview
Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born Sept. 3, 1920 in Kendallville to
Clarence and Daisy (Brugh) Getts. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law,
Edward and Donna Kenestrick of Durham, N.C.; 2 daughters and sons-in-law,
Constance and David Andrews of Fort Wayne and Judith and Jon McCreery of Mobile,
Ala.; 7 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Virginia Bortner of Albion. She was preceded in death by her first
husband, Howard Kenestrick; a sister, Doris Wilson; a granddaughter, Bethany
Wynn; and 2 grandsons, Jim and Jerry Bortner. Services Tuesday at Young

Schneider John Jacob was born at Feldtstetten, Wuertenberg, Germany on
Nov. 26, 1821 and died at Kendallville on June 4, 1902. Emigrating from Germany
in 1846 he first came to Decatur, Ind., and after a brief stay located in DeKalb
County, thus becoming one of the pioneer members of Zion Lutheran Church. Later
he moved to Kendallville and became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
The remaining relatives are the widow; John Brueggemann and family; Mr. and Mrs.
Jae Schneider and family; Mr. and Mrs. Christ Schneider; Salome, wife of Fred
Johnson and family; Marie, wife of Charles Buck and family; Emilie, Lena, Minna,
Louise Schneider; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schneider; a brother, Peter; and a sister,

Schneider Katharine, 87, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Walter Wolf, two miles west of Avilla, last Friday. She was
the widow of George Schneider, who died in 1942. Surviving is one
daughter, Mrs. Walter Wolf; one brother, Charles Gillian. Services Monday

Schneider Lieuty Theressa, wife of Emory C. Schneider, daughter of Silas
and Alice Grats, was born in DeKalb County March 29, 1876 and died in
Kendallville Nov. 22, 28 years 7 months and 24 days old. She leaves 2 sons,
Walter 8, and Roy 6 (one son preceded her in death), her parents, 2 sisters, 6
brothers. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Spencerville. ^

Schneider Mildred E, 80, died at Peabody Memorial home, North Manchester
Friday. She was a former resident of Kendallville. Born in
Jamestown, N.Y., Feb. 21, 1897, she was the daughter of Ernest and Della (Allen)
Slaw. She married William D. Schneider in 1918 in Battle Creek, Mich. He
preceded her in death July 27, 1970. She was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church, Kendallville, OES and White Shrine. Survivors are 2 sons, William D.,
Fort Wayne, and Robert S., Mansfield, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Sheeks,
Mitchell; one brother, Robert F., Troy, Mich.; 8 grandchildren; and 16

Schneider William D, 78, a Kendallville resident until 4 months ago, died Monday in National Nursing Home in Bedford. Born June 15, 1892 in
Oak Park, Ill., he was the son of William C. and Agnes Lonergan Schneider. He
was married Jan. 19, 1918 in Battle Creek, Mich. to Mildred Shaw. A retired
sales manager for pump manufacturers, he was employed 15 years at Flint &
Walling Mfg. Co. in Kendallville and 12 years for Barnes Mfg. Co. in Ohio. He
was a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodges, Rotary Club, American Legion and
First Presbyterian Church, all in Kendallville. + 7-?-1970
Schneider William D, 83, died Nov. 4, 2003 at Gordon Oak Nursing Home in
Mobile, Ala. He was a 1939 graduate of Kendallville High School and a
carpenter with Lebrato Brothers Construction Co. in Fort Wayne. He
served with the Army in WW II. He was born in Oak Park, Ill.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Jon McCreery of
Mobile; a sister and brother-in-law, Constance and David Andrews of Toledo,
Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Cheryl Carter of Fort Wayne; a
stepson; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 3

Schnetzler Shirley Mae, daughter of Alice and Martin Schnetzler, was born
in Kendallville on Oct. 22, 1935 and died at the Methodist
Hospital at Fort Wayne from appendicitis on Nov. 19, 1942, being 7 years and 27
days of age. Surviving are the parents; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Perry
of Fort Wayne and Mrs. and Mrs. William E. I. Schnetzler of Columbia City.

She was a volunteer at the Northeastern Center in Kendallville. Surviving are

of Kendallville; two sisters, Carol of Canoga Park, Calif., and Cathy Brill of

Schoenstadt Gwendolyn, 75, daughter of a former Ligonier mayor, died
Wednesday in Chicago. Her father, Simon Jacob Straus, was a local Ligonier
banker and real estate man who served as mayor in the 1890’s. She was the
granddaughter of Jacob Straus, who was one of 3 famous brothers who settled in
Ligonier in the early 1850’s and were responsible for the rapid growth and
business center in following decades. The family also made numerous
contributions to cultural, educational and religious life in the community. At
one time the family firm, Straus Brothers & Co., was the largest farm real
estate firm in the state. In the early 1920’s, Simon J. Straus moved to
Chicago where he died in 1928. His only son, Sgt. Stanley James, died while in
the service in 1944. Mrs. Schoenstadt’s mother, the former Rose Nathan of Fort
Wayne, died in 1953 and was the last of the family to be buried in Ligonier. She
is survived by her husband, Arthur, a retried movie theatre magnate; a son,
Arthur Jr., a social service worker; a daughter, Mrs. L. Anoff and 5
grandchildren. Interment was in the family mausoleum at Mt. Mayriz Cemetery in

Schoof Henry, 63, died Sept. 7 at the county infirmary from heart disease. For many years he was a railroad employee from which
he retired 10 years ago and accepted employment at Ruderman onion storage. He
was never married and is survived by 2 sisters of LaOtto; and a brother, John of

Schoof Richard Clayton, 29, of Avilla, died January 22, 2007 in an
automobile accident south of Antwerp, Ohio. He was employed with W.A.
Jones in Columbia City as a sales representative. He graduated from DeKalb
High School in 1997 and Tri-State University in 2001 with a B.S. degree in
physical education. He was born in Fort Wayne November 7, 1977 to Rick A.
and Imogene (Draper) Schoof. He married Cynthia Leigh Thomson on September
1, 2001 in Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville. He was a
member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Surviving are his wife; a daughter,
Gracie May; his parents; his in-laws, Greg and Cathy McNeal of Corunna and Bill
and Elissa Thomson of Midland, Mich.; a sister, Brandy Smith of Auburn; a
brother-in-law, Matthew McNeal of Corunna; and grandmother, Ruth Schoof of
Auburn. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eugene Schoof,

Schoonover, John V., 4, was pronounced dead at 12:29 pm Sunday at
LaGrange Hospital from injuries received in a lawnmower accident.
He was born Oct 20, 1984 in South Bend, the son of John E and Ruth A
(Wilson) Schoonover, who survive. Also surviving are two sisters,
Kelly and Amy, and a brother, Lester, all at home; maternal grandparents
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wilson of South Bend; and paternal grandparents,
John L Schoonover and Jane C. Gillette, both of South Bend. Funeral
services will be at 11 am Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church,
LaGrange, with kRev George Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in

Schopf Preston D, 77, (b 4-15-1879 - d.2-19-1957) Albion
jeweler, died Tuesday of last week after he was stricken with a heart attack
while on the platform of the B&O Railroad depot. Owner and operator of the
Schopf Jewelry Store, he came here from Garrett about 25 years ago. Survivors
include 2 sisters, Mrs. W. L. Heitz, Winona Lake, and Mrs. Albert Beringer, San

Schott Carl A(b.1-29-1894) of R. 3, Albion, died Jan. 17,
1964 in the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was a lifelong resident of Noble
County and active in farming prior to his illness. He was a member of the Albion
American Legion Post 246, a veteran of WW I. He is survived by his wife,
Josephine; 2 sons, Donald at home, and Carl Jr. of Albion; 5 grandchildren; one
brother, John of Archbold, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Savoie of Brimfield.

Schott Carl A Jr, 69, died Dec. 27, 2003 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort
Wayne. He was a foreman with BRC Rubber Co. in Ligonier where he worked
more than 40 years before retiring in 1997. He was a 1953 graduate of
Albion High School. He was born Jan. 28, 1934 in Elkhart County to Carl A.
Schott and Josephine (Hall) Cole. He married Norma Straw on Jan. 17, 1953
in Garrett. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Linda
Leitch of Wolf Lake and Teresa and Mark North of Cassopolis, Mich.; one son and

Brimfield, died Thursday at the VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He is survived by his

veteran of WW I and was a member of the American Legion Post in Wolcottville.

(Johnson) Straw. She married Carl Schott on Jan. 17, 1953 in
Garrett. He died Dec. 27, 2003. Surviving are 2 daughters and a

Schrader Delmor E, 43, R. 3, Columbia City, a resident of Noble County,
died Oct. 5 at Whitley County Hospital. He was born in Columbia City to Henry
and Joy Mosher Schrader and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in
1962. He worked with his father on the farm and in 1968 was employed at the
Weatherhead Co. For many years he was a hay dealer in this area. April 27, 1968
he married Carolyn J. Krider and 2 years later they moved to their farm west of
Big Lake in Noble Twp. He was a member of Oak Grove Church of God, Columbia City
Eagles Lodge, Modern Woodmen, American Angus Association, Weatherhead Pioneer
Club and Anglers Club. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Todd and Bart; and 2
daughters, Tera and Lora, all at home; his parents, Columbia City; and a sister,
Mrs. Merlin (Cora Dean) Hively, R. 3, Columbia City. A sister, Clara Jean Krider,

No. 342 of Fort Wayne. He was a Navy veteran of WW I. He moved to Sturgis from
Kendallville 25 years ago. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; 2 sons, Raymond

Schrader Max, 53, of 412 S. Walnut St., Columbia City, died
today in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Oct. 10, 1927 in Fort
Wayne, the son of Lawrence and Esther (Mayer) Schrader. His mother, Mrs. Esther
Devenney of R. 3, Columbia City, survives. He married Mary E. Buckles May 14,
1966. He was a 1945 graduate of Washington Center High School, Whitley County,
and enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served in the Signal Corps during WW II.
He worked for 17 years for Columbia Dairy and was recently employed by Philips
Industry, Albion. He was a member of Columbia City Elks 1417, Albion Eagles, and
American Legion Post 98, Columbia City. Surviving also are his wife; 3 sons,
Gage and Grant at home, James of South Whitley; 4 stepsons, Michael, Patrick,
and James Young of Kendallville, and Jeffrey Young at home; a stepdaughter,

Schrader Ruth, 80, of R. 1, Green Gable Trailer Park, New Carlisle, died
Tuesday in LaPorte Hospital. Born in Fremont March 30, 1899, she
was the daughter of William T. and Edna (Meyers) Young. She married Donald
Schrader in Mich. in 1948. He died in 1956. She had lived in New Carlisle since
1968 moving from Kendallville. She was a member of Moose Lodge No. 703,
Kendallville. The only survivors are 2 nieces, Mrs. Dorothy Hampshire of New
Carlisle, and Mrs. Nadine Schopple of Kennebunk, Maine. Funeral Friday

Wilmington, Ohio. She was born in Albion to William and Clara Fitch Knox on Aug.
20, 1902, and Oct. 13, 1923 in Albion she married Vaughn Schreiber who died in
1983. Survivors include 4 sons, William of Tulsa, Okla., Bernard, Oswego, N.Y.,
Donald, New Albany, Ind., and George, Bloomington, Ind., a daughter, Mrs. Gene
(Jane) Cook of Wilmington, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a

Schreiner Judith Anne, 53, died Tuesday at home in Washington Twp, Noble
County. She was born March 31, 1939 in Allen County to John Mark and Helen
Louise (Livingston) Babb. She was a Wolf Lake High School graduate and
served in the U.S. Air Force. She married her husband, John, November 20,
1959. They lived in New York City until he retired from the NYC Fire
Dept. In 1986 they moved to Kimmell. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Ginger Grubb of Kimmell; 2 sons, John of Port St. John, Fla., and
Richard of Ligonier; 3 grandchildren, Jason, Corrine and Timothy Grubb; a

Schrock Darwin E, 62, of Wolcottville, died Thursday in
McCray Hospital. Born April 7, 1924 in Castleton, Kan., he was the son of Mose
T. and Alice (Troyer) Schrock. On Sept. 17, 1950 in Fort Wayne he married
Barbara Hensch. A resident of Wolcottville since 1940, he was employed as a
metal cutter for Kehr Iron in LaGrange for the past 13 years. He was a member of
Messiah Lutheran Church and LaGrange American Legion Post 215. He was an Army
veteran. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters, Mrs. Jerry L. (Lorelei) Friend of
Auburn, Mrs. Stephen M. (Rhonda) Davis of Kendallville, and Mrs. Keith (Jill)

Schrock Eileen L, 75, LaGrange, died March 6, 2003 at the home of her
son, James Mynhier in Wolcottville. She was born in Garrett April 30, 1927 to James and Eva (Snyder)
Nodine. Her first husband, Leonard Mynhier, preceded her in death.
She married Edward A. Schrock in November 1963 in LaGrange. Surviving are
her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ronald Logan of Wolcottville;

Born Dec. 18, 1897 in LaGrange County, he was the son of Joseph and Caroline (Hochstetler)
Schrock. On Nov. 17, 1923 he married Fannie D. Miller. He was a retired farmer
and a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Surviving are his wife; a daughter,

Schrock George E, 72, of Ligonier, died unexpectedly from an apparent
heart attack June 19, 2008. He retired from Western Rubber after 37 years
of service; had farmed for the last 27 years; and was employed at Maple Crest
Country Club. He was born Aug. 17, 1935 in Elkhart
County to Ervin E. and Fannie D. (Miller) Schrock. He married Martha L.
Targgart on May 19, 1961. Surviving are his wife; a son and
daughter-in-law, Roger and Rhonda of New Paris; a daughter and son-in-law,
Kimberly and Terry Moses of Ligonier; 7 grandchildren, David Bailey, Josh and

Schrock Jane, 56, died March 10 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. She and her
husband, Walter, were owners and operators of Schrock’s Flowers in Ligonier

Mrs. Mary Jane Littlejohn of Northbrook, Ill.; a son, Robert J. of Los Angeles,

Schrock, Lillie, 88, died Thursday in Greencroft Nursing Home,
Goshen where she had been a patient 3 years. She was born March 9,
1909 in LaGrange Co, the daughter of John and Susan (Yoder) Shrock.
On March 23, 1918 she married Andrew Schrock, who preceded her in death
March 6, 1971. She was a member of the Emma Mennonite Church.
Surviving are 4 sons, Frank of LaGrange, Fred of Wolcottville, Rollin
of Howe and Freeman of Burr Oak MI; 3 sisters, Lizzie Yoder of
Ligonier, Sarah Petersheim of Topeka, and Annie Miller of Millersburg;
20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Schrock Otto, 85, Bradenton, Fla., died Jan. 21 in a Bradenton Nursing
Home. He was born Feb. 4, 1899 in Elkhart. He married Bethel Tallerday, who died
in 1963. On Oct. 3, 1964 he married Cloha Zook in Ligonier. A former Ligonier
resident, he moved to Fla. 5 years ago. He was a retired florist and a member of
Palma Solo Presbyterian Church, Bradenton, a 50-year member of Masonic Blue
Lodge, life member of Ligonier Eagles and a member of the Ligonier Rotary.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Rose) Cunningham, Ligonier; one
son, Walter, Fort Meyers, Fla.; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Goshen Hospital of injuries received a short time earlier in an auto accident in
Goshen. She was born June 5, 1897 in Goshen and was a member of the Ligonier
Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Grant; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Yoder

Schrock William O "Bill", 69, of Kendallville, died January 6,
2007 in the emergency room at DeKalb Hospital in Auburn. He had suffered
from Shy Dragger Syndrome for the past 3 years. He had been a resident of
Wesley Health Care in Auburn the past 6 months and prior to that had lived in
Kendallville since 2003. He had lived 10 years at Big Long Lake and 22
years in Fort Wayne. He retired in 1989 from International
Harvester. He was a member of South Milford United Methodist Church.
He was born August 10, 1937 in LaGrange County to Reuben and Susan (Yoder)
Schrock. He married Joan L. Troyer on April 18, 1959, in LaOtto. She
survives in Kendallville. Also surviving are 3 sons and a daughter-in-law,
Craig and Rhonda Schrock of Arlington, Texas, Todd Schrock of New York, N.Y.,
and Chad Schrock of Lake Mary, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Gappinger of Elkhart; 3
brothers, Clayton of Cedarville and Elmer and Paul of Fort Wayne; 2
grandchildren, Bailey and Adam Schrock. He was preceded in death by his
parents; 5 brothers, Levi, Albert, Robert, Donald and David Schrock; and 2

Schrock Zelda, 84, a native of Noble County who spent her early years in
Washington Twp, died June 4, 1982 in Whitley County Hospital. A daughter of John
and Mary Buffenbarger Piper, she married Melvin Schrock on Aug. 15, 1944 and
they spent their entire married life in Columbia City. He died March 24, 1963.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Woody (Mary) Hawk, R. 3, Ligonier, and a nephew,

Schroeder Alva Eugene, 48, of 406 S. Martin St., Ligonier, died Tuesday in South Bend Hospital. Born Oct. 3, 1940 in Larwill, he was the
son of Walter and Edith (Martin) Schroeder. On Feb. 23, 1963 in Columbia City,
he married Ladonna Ness. He had lived in Whitley County prior to moving to
Ligonier 16 years ago. He was an electrician for Rockwood Mobile Home Division
and an Army veteran. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church,
Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club and a former 4-H leader. Surviving are his wife; his
parents in Larwill; 3 daughters, Tammy and Abigail at home, and Pollyanna of

Schroeder Ladonna,71, of Ligonier, died June 1, 2011, at Parkview Noble Hospital.
She was born February 7, 1940, in Whitley County to Edward Peter and
Florence (Harkenrider) Ness. On February 23, 1963, she married Alva Eugene
Schroeder. He died February 28, 1989. She graduated from Larwill High School. She
worked for Freudenberg in Ligonier, as a nurse’s aide at Strawberry Village
Nursing Home in Ligonier, Greencroft Nursing Home in Goshen, Creps Bakery,
catered for Archer Auctions and Jake Bitner Auctions, and clerked at Shipshewana
Auction. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ligonier. Survivors include 3 daughters, Tammy
(Keith) Helfers of Syracuse, Polly (George) Beasley of Millersburg, and Abby
Schroeder of Ligonier; 3 sons, Matt (Amy) Schroeder of Kimmell, Jeremiah
Schroeder of Kendallville, Nathan (Denise) Schroeder of Syracuse; 14
grandchildren; and one sister, Ardella (Bernie) Reust of Huntington.
She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Lloyd Ness of Cromwell and
Gene (Marge) Ness of Columbia City; and one grandchild, Elizabeth Schroeder.

Schroeder William was born Aug. 9, 1848 in Miami County, Ohio. While in
his teens he enlisted Feb. 18, 1864 in Co. A, 30th Regiment of
Indiana Vol. and was with Gen. Sherman in his march to the sea and participated
in all the battles and skirmishes that took place till Atlanta was assaulted and
then with Gen. Thomas fought the battles of Nashville and Frankfort in Dec.
1864. In June 1865 he was transferred to Texas and remained there till
discharged. Oct. 28, 1867 he enlisted in Co. A., 6th Regiment, U. S.
Regulars and served 3 years on the frontier and was honorably discharged Oct.
28, 1870. He married May D. Parker Oct. 13, 1871 in Waterloo, Ind. They had 9 children. Three preceded their father
in death and 6 remain. He died Sept. 10 from consumption, aged 44
years 1 month and 1 day. ^ 9-16-1892

Schroyer Kenneth Arnold, 82, of McClish Lake in Hudson, died Oct. 27,
2001 at Hickory Creek nursing home in Kendallville. He was an equipment
designer for International Harvester, retiring in 1982 after 30 years. He
served in the Army in WW II and was a member of Kendallville Masonic Lodge 276,
F&AM, LaGrange OES Sylvan Chapter 251 and Rome City American Legion Post
381. He was born April 30, 1919 in Battle Creek, Mich., the son of Charles
B. and Coral (Snyder) Schroyer. He married Theressa Marguerite "Tess"
Christel on March 26, 1943 in Tampa, Fla. She died April 7, 1993.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Michael Kennedy of
Hudson. A sister, Gwendelyn Slaght, preceded him in death. Services

Wednesday in her home. She was born in Pensacola, Fla. October 15, 1917 to
Frederick G. and Pearl M. (McGlosson) Christel. On March 26, 1943 in
Tampa, Fla. she married Kenneth Arnold Schroyer. She had been a school
teacher 43 years, retiring in 1960. She was a member of OES Sylvan Lake
Chapter, and Noble County Coucnil on Aging. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Sandra C. Kennedy of McClish Lake. A sister, Pearl Frederica

Schroyer Viola G, 88, died Thursday in Gurnsey Hospital, Cambridge, Ohio,
while on vacation. She was born in Hazelton, Iowa April 2, 1903, the

Schroyer, who died July 5, 1973. She was a member of Trinity Church United
Methodist and Kendallville Senior Citizens. There are no immediate

Schuelke Henry C, 86, Fort Wayne, died May 27 in the VA Medical Center.
He was retired from the Fort Wayne Dairy Equipment Co. after 26 years. He was a
lifelong resident of Fort Wayne and employed at Concordia Senior College before
retiring in 1964 after 8 years’ service. He was a veteran of WW I and a member
of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 82. Surviving

born Aug. 28, 1911 in Fort Wayne and married Wanetta Beaman. He worked for Dana

Schulte Henry died of heart disease Saturday at Kneipp Sanitarium at Rome City. He was born at
Siedlinghausen, Westfalia, Germany on May 28, 1836, and at his death was 80 years, two months
and 28 days of age. Before coming to this country he took active part in three
wars - Denmark-Germany in 1864, Prussia-France in 1869, and Germany-France in
1870. He came to this country about 35 years ago and married Mrs. Gertrude
Schumacher who died Oct. 5, 1915. He is survived by one son,
William; two daughters, Mary and Pauline. Funeral Tuesday at St.

Schulte Mary T, 79, R. R. 1, Avilla, a native of Allen Twp and a resident
of the Avilla area for the past 40 years, died Saturday
in her home. She was born April 19, 1882, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude
Pieper Schulte. She was employed as a domestic and lived with a cousin, Lillie
R. Pieper, who survives. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Pauline Krahn of
Kendallville; and a brother William Schulte of the Sacred Heart Home, Avilla.

She was born March 31, 1906 in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Margaret

Schultz Lovina, 88, resident of the Howe community for the last 80 years,
died Monday from a heart attack at the home of her son, Irvin, 2 miles
south of Howe. Her death occurred in the same house in which she was married.
She was born in Ashland County, Ohio, July 19, 1860, a daughter of Henry and
Elizabeth (Moler) Bock. The family moved to Lima Twp, LaGrange County, Ind. in
1868. She and Cyrus Schultz were married March 13, 1881. He died a number of
years ago. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Howe. Surviving are 5
sons, Irvin W., Lloyd, Rollin and Clyde, all of this community, and Marvin of
Kendallville; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. Services

Schultz Rebecca, 76, a resident of this city and the vicinity for over a
half century, died Thursday at her home on Wayne St. from complications.
Rebecca Levering was born in Richland County, Ohio, Sept. 20, 1840. When
she was 2 years old her mother died. In 1849 she came to Indiana with her
father, making the journey overland in a covered wagon, locating at Lisbon.
Later she moved north of this city, where she resided a number of years. She was
married in 1859 and was the mother of 2 children. In 1887 with her husband, she
moved to Kendallville. In 1895 they moved to Rome City, residing there 8 years,
when they returned to this city. She is survived by her husband; a daughter,
Mrs. C. P. Fisher of Rome City; a son, J. L. Sawyer and Mrs. Margaret Sawyer; a
sister, both of this city, and Mrs. Rachel Hagen, a sister at Newton, Kan.; 11
grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Corunna. She was born April 24,

in Kendallville she married Ervin Schuman and he died April 22, 1980. A

Schuman Harold O, 65, of Coldwater, Mich., died in Community
Health Center of Branch County Monday. He was born Jan. 1, 1917,
the son of Martin and Sarah (Kundard) Schuman. On Feb. 11, 1939 in Decatur he
married June M. Sheets. He attended the Kendallville schools and was a farmer
and owner-operator of Schuman Wholesale Sporting Goods Co. in Kendallville from
1951 until 1958, and in Coldwater from 1958 until his retirement in 1980. He was
a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Coldwater and a member of U. C. T.
for 21 years. Surviving are his wife; a son, Rex L. of Coldwater; a sister, Mrs.
Frank (Martha) Johnson of Kendallville; and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a daughter, Carole in 1947; a brother and 2 sisters. Services

home. She was born October 11, 1909 in DeKalb County to Isaiah and Carrie

Schuman. She spent most of her life in the Kendallville area and retired
from Trenton Garment Co. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church near

Lutheran hospital in Fort Wayne from cancer. He was born Nov. 5, 1913 to Julius
Edward and Cardlina (Wieneke) Schuman in Wausau, Wis. He had been a resident of
Ligonier the past 35 years, moving to the area from Warsaw. He was president of
Lyon & Greenleaf Co., Inc., millers of wheat flour. He was a member of
Ligonier Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge No. 185, Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne,
and Ligonier Elks Club. He was a veteran of WW II, a member of the President’s
Advisory Committee on Industrial Agriculture, director of Miller’s National
Federation and director of its Educational and Promotional Committee. He was
former president of the Ligonier School Board and a director of the American
State Bank. Survivors include his wife, Olive; a son, Kenneth E., of Ligonier; a
daughter, Mrs. Carol Ann Casado, Chapel Hill, N.C.; 3 stepsons, Richard O. Hire,

Schuman Melvin F,
99, of South Milford, died November 25, 2013, at his home. He
was born in Larwill, Ind., on September 30, 1914, to Henry and Flossie (Harris)
Schuman. In 1944, he moved to LaGrange County
from Columbia City and Noble County. He retired from Monsanto in
Ligonier, and had been a farmer and an avid gardener and crafter. He was a former member of LaGrange
County Farm Bureau. On March 15, 1934, in Plymouth, Ind.,
he married Lucy I. Spear. She died July 18, 2005. Surviving are 2 daughters, Lois
Daugherty of Huntington, and Janice Schuman of South Milford; a
son, Kay Leon Schuman of Fort Wayne; 3 grandchildren; 8
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Hal Schuman of Avilla. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Errol Schuman. Cremation

Schutt Inez A, daughter of James McClure and Lodema A. Beckley,
was born July 23, 1880 in Avilla. On June 1, 1903 she married Clarence H. Schutt. They had five children, Gladys Sellers of Angola,
Marjory Gappinger of Albion, Glenn F. of Howe, Everett G. at home, and Alice Freeman of LaOtto. She
has two sisters and one brother, Mrs. James Kelham of Avilla, Mrs. E. J. Moore
of Indianapolis, Orland Beckley of Albion; one half-sister, Mrs. Fred Weaver of
Brea, Calif. One brother, William, and one sister, Orpha, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Avilla Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School
classes for many years. Besides a husband and family she leaves eight

Schutt James, 82, died Tuesday at his residence in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born in Ligonier, the son of Bruce and Mabel Schutt. He graduated
from Ligonier High School and the Indiana University School of Medicine.
He was a physician for many years in Ligonier before retiring and moving to
Florida. He is survived by his wife, Marie. Cremation in Fort

Schutt James Bruce, 71, died in his sleep at his home on S. Main St.,
Ligonier, Wednesday from complications. Born in Albion
April 1, 1871, he had spent most of his life in Noble County and had been a
resident of Ligonier for nearly 50 years. He was a member of the Methodist
Church, the OES, Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge of Ligonier. He was elected
mayor of Ligonier in 1914 and served for 4 years, later serving the city as a
member of the council. He served as county assessor for several years. In his
early life he had been a teacher in the county schools. Upon moving to Ligonier
he became bookkeeper in Mier Carriage Factory and later served in an official
capacity with the Ligonier Refrigerator Co. Surviving are his wife, Mabel; one
son, Dr. James B. of Ligonier; a sister, Mrs. Anna Esch of Washington, Ill.; 2
brothers, Lee and Ross in Calif.; and 2 half-brothers, Guy and Carl of
Kendallville. Funeral in the Methodist Church at Ligonier Friday. Burial, Oak Park Cemetery. + 5-?-1950
Schutt Jane died at her home south of town Oct. 10, 1912. Jane
Inman was born in Meigs County, Ohio, Dec. 13, 1840. She married Thomas Schutt,
and they had five sons and two daughters, all of whom are left. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and
four sisters. In her girlhood days she united with the Presbyterian Church, and
in 1878 became a member of the Methodist Church at Swan. Later she transferred
to the Avilla Methodist Church. Funeral at the late residence Saturday.

Schutt Leila V, 84, died Nov. 14 in Miller’s Merry Manor, LaGrange. She
was born May 1, 1914 in Albion to J. William and Ota (Rendell) Cleland. On Jan.
2, 1937 in Auburn she married Glenn F. Schutt who died Feb. 16, 1997. She moved
from Albion to LaGrange in 1937. She was the former owner of a licensed day care
in her LaGrange home. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Maretha) McCoy of
Martinsville; 2 sons, Wayne A. of Kendallville and Gene F. of Avilla; a
granddaughter, Theresa Schutt of Fort Wayne, whom she and her husband raised.
She was preceded in death by 2 sisters. Funeral in Frurip-May Funeral Home,

Schutt Leonard, 53, died Sunday at the Lakeside Hospital,
Kendallville, from a skull fracture and concussion of the brain. Owen Grummons,
who failed a drunkometer test, of Fort Wayne, was charged with involuntary
manslaughter as the result of the accident in which Schutt was killed. Funeral
for the World War veteran was Tuesday from Miser Funeral Home. Burial, Sweet
Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Beatrice; one son, Leonard Jr. at home; one
daughter, Mrs. Hazel Quaintance of Fort Wayne; and 5 brothers, Bruce of
Ligonier, Ross and Lee of Calif., and Carl and Guy of Kendallville. The latter 2

Schutt Linnie, daughter of Susan and Asher W. Smith, was born Feb. 21,
1887 in York Twp and died at her home in Swan Twp March 30, 1916
after a short illness from pelvic infection, aged 29 years, one month and nine
days. She married Leonard D. Schutt Dec. 27, 1909, and they had two children, Hazel L., aged five years, and Dallas Irving, aged
one year. She graduated from the common schools in 1902 and afterwards attended
Albion High School several terms. She is survived by her husband, one son, one
daughter and mother. The remains were shipped to Albion Saturday.

Schutt Lydia Ann, eldest daughter of John and Jane Buckingham, was born
in South Chili, near Rochester, N. Y., Dec. 7, 1834, and died Feb. 16, 1912, aged 78 years, 2 months and 9 days. She was married to Andrew J.
Schutt at Huntertown, Ind. in 1854. After residing there about ten years they
came to Elkhart County, settling in Cleveland Twp where they resided about seven
years, moving thence to Oslo Twp south of Simonton Lake where they lived for 35
years. In 1904 they moved onto the farm one mile southwest of Edwardsburg, which
has since been their home. In her father’s family she is survived by three
brothers and two sisters. In her own immediate family, her husband; two
daughters, Mrs. Jerome Wilkinson and Mrs. Bertha VanAntwerp of this place, and
one son, Emre J. Schutt of Elkhart. The funeral was held at the house Monday. Burial, village cemetery. Among those who attended the funeral were a
brother and two sisters of the deceased - L. C. Hunter of Detroit, and Mrs.

Schutt Mabel, 80, a lifelong resident of Ligonier until she moved to Fort
Myers Beach, Fla. 4 years ago, died June 5 at Goshen Hospital after suffering a
cerebral hemorrhage. She was born July 15, 1881, a daughter of Wesley and Rose (Spriegel)
Bourie. She was married Oct. 19, 1904 in Kendallville to Bruce Schutt, who died
in 1950. She was a member of the Methodist Church and OES Ligonier Chapter 325.
She is survived by a son, Dr. James B., Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; and a sister,
Mrs. G. Floyd (Dorothy) Cooper, Cleveland, O. Burial, Friday in Oak Park

Twp April 22, 1885; died at Sacred Heart Hospital at Garrett Aug. 28, aged 19 years, 4 months and 5 days. She married Leonard Schutt June 10, 1918. Surviving are the husband, Leonard; 2 children,
Hazel 14, and Dallas 9; 3 sisters, Mrs. W. H. Switzer of Upper Sandusky, O.,

Schutt Thomas was born in Onondaga County, N.Y. March 21, 1817. He came
to Indiana in 1845, settled in what was then a wilderness, cutting the first
tree on the land upon which he made his home and spent his life. He died Aug.
22. On Dec. 28, 1847 he married Hannah Gifford, who died July 24, 1864, leaving
4 children, who are still living, Dr. L. C. of Toledo, Walter E. of Cleveland,
Dr. M. A. of Michigan City, and Mrs. Lillie E. West of Seattle, Wash. His second
marriage was Sept. 6, 1866 to Jennie Inman, who survives, also 7 children, 3 of
whom are married. The younger boys are living at the old home with their mother.

Schutt Walter G, 87, of Adrian, Mich., died Wednesday in the Adrian
Hospital. He was born in 1893 in Kendallville, the son of Carl and Emma Schutt.
During the 1940’s he was plant manager of Flint & Walling Mfg. Survivors

Schutt Wayne Arthur, 64, died February 28, 2007 at his Kendallville
home. He had been a delivery driver for United Parcel Service for 29
years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Eagles Lodge No. 985,
American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville and past governor of Kendallville Moose
Lodge. He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1960. He was born
in Brighton on December 26, 1942 to Glenn F. and Leila Vesta (Cleland) Schutt. He married Deeann Carter on December 19, 1965 in
Kendallville. She died January 27, 1993. Surviving are his fiancee,
Joan Cooper; 2 daughters, Teresa Schutt of Fort Wayne and Veronica Cole of
Elwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Byron and Roseann Schutt of Auburn; a brother
and sister-in-law, Gene and Carolyn Schutt of LaOtto; a sister and
brother-in-law, Maretha and Chuck McCoy of Martinsville; and 5 grandchildren,
Jeffery, Selina, Lucas and Rebecca Schutt and Katherine Cole. He was also
preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael, in 1961. Services

Schutta Susanna, wife of Albert Schutta, deceased, died Saturday at the home of her son, Albert and family, east of town, where
she had resided for many years. Death was the result of a long illness from
heart trouble at the age of 78 years, ten months and twenty-six days. Susanna
Kaeflug was born in Hermasdorf, Germany, Feb. 20, 1837 and died Jan. 15, 1916.
She married Albert Schutta in Hermasdorf Nov. 15, 1859 and
came with her husband to America in 1865 and resided first at Bronson, Mich.
From there they soon moved to Kendallville where for five years her husband
worked on a construction train, after which they purchased a small farm in Green
Twp, residing thereon for 18 years. That farm they traded to S. K. Randall for
the place where she lived until stricken by death. She leaves four
children, Mrs. Lena Sobraski of Keyser, W. Va., Mrs. Anna Schiffli of
Garrett, Mrs. Susie Bender, Avilla, and Albert at home. Five of her nine children, together with the father, have preceded her
in death.
She was a member of the Catholic Church. Funeral at St. Mary’s

Schwab Avon D, 75, Skinner Lake, died April 8 at Highlands General
Hospital in Sebring, Fla. He was born in Albion Jan. 17, 1910, the son of Dale
and Daisy (Stout) Schwab, and resided in Albion before moving to Skinner Lake in
1955. He married Mary Jane Lundy Aug. 31, 1934 in Spencerville. He was retired
from Excel in Albion and belong to Albion Masonic Lodge, St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church and other area organizations. Surviving with his wife are a son, Avon
Hugh of Clawson, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Dwight Willits, Albion; and five

12-9-1973) in McCray Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1890 in Albion, she married
Dale Schwab who preceded her in death. They operated Schwab Shoe Store in Albion
for a number of years. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Albion,
the Prentiss Chapter of OES, So-and-Sew Club and Ladies Whist Club. Surviving
are a son, Avon D., Albion; a daughter, Enid, Albion; a sister, Mrs. Frances
Young, Merriam; a grandson, Avon H., Clawson, Mich.; 2 great-grandchildren.

heart attack May 15, 1945. Surviving are the wife, Daisy (Stout);

Schwab Donald K, 76, of Eau Claire, Mich., died at his residence on July
1, 2002. He was born May 23, 1926 in Kendallville to Fred Schwab and
Evelyn (King) Rimmel. He married Patsy Luckey on Aug. 14, 1948 in
Tri-Lakes, Ind. He graduated with a BS degree from Indiana University and
was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Albion Masonic Lodge
#97. He retired as a senior buyer in 1985 fromSears Roebuck after 35 years. He was a veteran of the Air Force in WW
II. He was preceded in death by his wife on June 29, 1998. Surviving
are 3 daughters, Elaine (David) Conner of Crestwood, Ill., Sharon (George)
Riecke of Dowagiac and Joan (Gary) Witchen of Berrien Center; 6 grandchildren; 4

Schwab Dora Adella was born March 3, 1851 in Noble County, the eldest
child of Charles and Emeline Wright, who were residents of York Twp,
Noble County, during their married life. She was married in 1871 to William
David Bales. They had 3 children, Charles, Vern and Alba, who
with 7 grandchildren, survive. In April 1905 the husband died. With the
exception of the first 4 years of their married life which was spent in Cass
County, Iowa, they have lived in Noble County. In 1907 she married Gottlieb

yesterday at her home of a heart ailment. She was the daughter of Daniel and
Mary (Eve) Schwab and had lived in the Ligonier area for the past 85 years. She

Schwab Frank H, 79, 114 S. 7th St., Goshen, died last Saturday
in Elkhart Hospital. He was born March 11, 1901 in Wawaka, a son of William and
Ruby (Hooten) Schwab. He was married on May 2, 1925 in Brimfield to Albertine
Gerver. He was employed by the Indiana State Highway Dept. for 18 years and was
supervisor of the Goshen District 4 years. He was a member of the First United
Methodist Church of Goshen, Masonic and Scottish Rite of South Bend, was part
owner of Indiana Highway Materials Co. until 1960 and Form Asphalt Paving Co.
until 1963. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Phillip of Goshen, and William of
Elkhart; 2 sisters, Lucille, Syracuse, and Mrs. Bill Gates, Kalamazoo, Mich.; 8
grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A brother and sister preceded him in

Schwab Fred J, 51, president of the Albion National Bank, died Saturday
in McCray Hospital where he had been a patient since he was injured in a two-car
crash late Thursday about two miles north of here. He died from loss of blood
from a ruptured spleen. He had undergone surgery late Friday night. Surviving
besides the widow are a son, Don; two granddaughters; his mother, Mrs. Jessie
Schwab, Wawaka; two brothers, Johnnie, Ligonier, and Earle, Fort Wayne; and one

Schwab George Michael was born Oct. 26, 1837 in Germany. When
about 12 years of age he immigrated and settled in our country.
On Dec. 27, 1859 he married Mary Agatha Schoenlein. She died without leaving issue Feb. 17, 1903.
He married Mrs. Renata Wood on March 22, 1905. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Emanuel Church of our city
where funeral will be Thursday. He died Dec. 11, 1917. ~12-19-1917
Schwab Gottlieb, son of John and Anna Schwab, was born in Berne,
Switzerland Dec. 12, 1844; died in Albion Nov. 8, 1926, aged 81 years 10 months
and 27 days. He was the youngest of a family of 5 boys and 2 girls. All
have preceded him in death. At the age of 21 he came to the U.S., locating in Wawaka, where he lived until 1887
when he came to Albion. He married Nancy Jane Hursey Oct. 29, 1868, and they had 2 boys and 5
girls, two of whom, Frances Beck and Clarence, preceded him in death.
Mrs. Schwab died in June 1902. He married Isadora Bales on May 25, 1907. When a boy he became a member of the German Reformed Church
in Switzerland. He was the oldest member of the IOOF of Ligonier and the oldest business man in Albion, being the
shoe man. He is survived by his widow, 5 children, Jennie Gonser of Vancouver, Wash., Edna Otto, Deshler, Ohio,
Cora Netz, Toledo, O., Avon Dale of Albion and Iva Kinney of near Ligonier; 13
grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral was from the home of his son Wednesday.

in Ligonier. She was born April 14, 1907 in Cromwell to Harry and Goldie

Ligonier. He died in 1963. She was a retired waitress and cook in
Ligonier and a member of the Ligonier United Methodist Church and the Huntington
Women of Moose No. 255, West Noble American Legion Auxiliary No. 243, Syracuse
VFW Post 1342 Auxiliary and Ligonier Eagles No. 1763 Auxiliary. She is
survived by a daughter, Susie Q. Parkerson of Indianapolis; a granddaughter,

Hospital. She was born December 23, 1913 in Ligonier to Hugh C. and Mattie
L. (Agee) Lundy. On August 31, 1934 in Spencerville she married Von
Schwab. He died April 7, 1985. A lifetime area resident, she had
been employed at Albion National Bank and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran
Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Avon and Bonnie
Schwab of Clawson, Mich.; 5 grandchildren, Charles, Laura, Robert, Randy and
Rick; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3

in Benton Oct. 7, 1961. She had served 22 years as postmistress at Wawaka, being

Schwab William George, 64, died Tuesday at his
home, 408 N. State St., Kendallville, from a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Schwab
had moved to Kendallville about a year ago. He was born in Oakdale, Pa.,
December 1, 1884, the son of Peter and Carrie Conn Schwab. In early life he was
a fireman on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and in recent months had been
employed at the Trenton Garment Company. He was a member of the Brotherhood of
Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen of Garrett, past master of Avilla Lodge 460, F
& A M, past patron of Avilla Chapter 155, OES, a member of the Mary Martha
White Shrine of Jerusalem 25 of Kendallville and a member of the Avilla
Methodist Church. Surviving are the wife, Nettie; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph

Schwannecke Frank, 82, died Saturday in the home of his
grandnephews, Jay Terry, R. 1, Rome City, where he had lived for 15 years. He
was born Jan. 8, 1892 in Saginaw, Mich. He moved to Rome City 15 years ago from
Midland, Mich. He was a retired lumber truck driver. Also surviving is a

of his life, died Jan. 7, 1948 at McCray Hospital from heart disease. Surviving
are a daughter, Mrs. C. H. Altimus; and a son, Edward J. of Coldwater, Mich.

Schwartz Edward C was born in Kendallville April 21, 1870. He graduated
from the Lutheran School and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He worked for
the McCray Refrigerator Co. which was then located where the Pullman Marble
Works now are. After that he worked at different places, finally going with the
T&C I Ry as general mechanic in the power house, where he was employed at
the time of his death on March 26, 1910, aged 39 years 11 months and 5 days. On
Aug. 14, 1892 he married Hattie Diggins, and they had one child, Leona.
His leaves a wife, daughter, mother and 3 sisters, Mrs. F. E. Johnson,
Mrs. J. C. Dull and Mrs. E. S. Kent. Funeral from the residence March

Schwartz Elmer K "Slim", 63, Shalley Dr., died Sunday in McCray Hospital. He was born in Berne March 25, 1914, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schwartz. He married Marie Herron Oct. 31, 1958 in
Kendallville. He was president of Kendallville Concrete and had been a
Kendallville resident 18 years coming from Fort Wayne. He had been assistant
manager of Stroh’s Brewery for the state of Indiana for 12 years. He was a
member of the First Presbyterian Church, F&AM at Geneva, the Scottish Rite,
the Shrine, Elks Club and the Moose Lodge. Survivors include the wife; a
daughter, Mrs. Michael (Pam) Reville, Fort Wayne; 2 sisters, Mrs. Florence
Stiner, and Mrs. Alfred (Surena) Marhenke, both of Berne; and 2 grandsons. One

Hospital. She was born in Kendallville Dec. 28, 1903 to Guy H. and Bertha (Stonebraker)
Smith. She married Richard Schwartz and he preceded her in death. She had lived
in Kendallville since 1957, moving from Fort Wayne. She was a retired registered
nurse at Irene Byron Hospital in Fort Wayne. Surviving are 2 daughters, Joan
Gres of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Patricia Fark of Fort Wayne; a sister, Ruth
Smith of Avilla; a brother, Kermit of Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren and 7

Schwartz Rosa, wife of Wines L. Schwartz, formerly Mrs.
Will Nicodemus, died at her home in Fort Wayne Saturday. While the
wife of Mr. Nicodemus she resided in Albion and Garrett. In both of these
marriages no children were born. Her first marriage was to John McMeans of
Albion, and they had one daughter, now Opal Greenwood of Garrett.
Survivors are one brother, Henry Dolan of Albion; and 2 sisters, Mary of Toledo
and Mrs. Inez Parrott of Flint, Mich. She was the daughter of Patrick and
Priscilla Dolan, born at Port Mitchell south of Albion. Funeral Monday in

St., died last Friday in McCray Hospital. Funeral was Monday in L. E. Berhalter & Son Funeral Home here. Burial, Fairview
Cemetery. He was born Feb. 15, 1911 in Continental, Ohio, the son of Bernard and
Teresa (Heising) Schwartzengraber. In 1956 he was married to the former Bernice
Woodruff in Ligonier. He has been a resident of Avilla for ten years and
employed by the town of Avilla for the past eight years. He was a veteran of WW
II, serving in the European Theatre and was also a member of the local American
Legion Post. Surviving in addition to the wife, Bernice, are two sons, Floyd,
Kendallville, Leonard, Chester, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. James (Anna Lee) Camidge,
Rockville, Md.; one stepson, Michael Rodman, Selfridge Air Force Base, Mich.;
four stepdaughters, Mrs. William (Joann) Kovets and Mrs. Gaylord (Bette)

Schwarz Arthur W, 84, 224 Silver St., Kendallville, died
today in McCray Hospital from a heart condition. He was born to Joseph K. and
Carolina (Willert) Schwarz in Milwaukee, Wis., Feb. 20, 1889. He married Ethel
M. Green Dec. 19, 1910 in Albion. She died Sept. 16, 1959. He came to
Kendallville when a small boy and opened a postal telegraph office here in 1910.
When Western Union consolidated with Postal Telegraph, he was retained as
manager until his retirement in Dec. 1955. Surviving are a son, J. Walter of
Kendallville; 2 grandchildren, Jerry W., Granada Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Caryl

Schwarz Gladys Josephine, 76, died today in McCray Hospital. She
was born May 20, 1917 in Kendallville to Leslie and Mae (Rogers) Fox. On
May 16, 1937 in Kendallville she married Joseph Walter Schwarz. He died
November 15, 1978. She and her husband managed Miller & Jones Family
Shoe Store in Kendallville for 40 years until its closing in 1976. She
later worked 15 years for the Shoe Rack in Kendallville and part-time at
Chronister's Card & Gift store. She was a member of Faith United
Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Caryl) Blue of
Kendallville; a son, Jerry of Kennesaw, Ga.; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Michael
and Kenny Schwarz and Kim Marti; and 2 great-grandchildren, Cliff and Kasie

Hospital. A Rome City resident for 35 years, he was born in Fort Wayne and
retired from William B. Schele Co. here after 30 years. He was a member of the

Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Robert Wilde, Calif.; one son, Raymond, Los Angeles; 7

Schweigel Evelyn D, 64, of Churubusco, died Oct. 30 at home. The
Hicksville, Ohio native was an employee of Hughes Electronics in Columbia City.

Schweiger Marvin E, 68, of Kendallville died October 18, 2012, at his
home. He was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, on November 28, 1943, to
Earl B. and Velma I. (Essex) Schweiger. He graduated from Richland Center
High School in Wisconsin in 1961 and served his country in the U. S. Navy.
He worked in the foundry business for 42 years and he retired from Dalton
Foundry in Kendallville. Survivors include two daughter, Tammy Schweiger of
Kendallville and Amy Stephens of Kendallville; a son, Joel Schweiger of
Kendallville; 4 grandchildren, Khala Schweiger, Troy “TJ” Blair Jr., Tre’
Stephens, and Brekkan Stephens; and one great-grandson, Mathieu Stephens.
He was also preceded in death by his only brother, Johnny Schweiger.

and Roger Bonner of Muskegon, Mich., Nora and Randy Page of Rome City, Jane and

Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born in Hudson January 9, 1913 to
George A. and Nora (Stomm) Schweitzer. On May 29, 1938 in Richmond he
married Mary A. Anderson. She died September 12. He was owner and
operator of Kendallville Heating & Air Conditioning until retirement in
1980. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kendallville.

Vale View Nursing Home, Valparaiso. She was born Sept. 28, 1884 in Kendallville
to Frank and Aurilla (Faux) Hinkley. She married Gustave W. Schwier in Noble
County Aug. 29, 1919. He preceded her in death. She was a resident of Valparaiso
for 22 years moving there from Rome City. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs.
Raymond (Charlotte) Steele, R. 6, Valparaiso; a brother, Otis, Kendallville; 2

Merry Manor, LaGrange. He was born in LaGrange County Aug. 26, 1906, a son of

1945. On Feb. 8, 1951, he married Grace DePew and she survives. Other survivors

Scoby Clarence L, 76, a native of Noble County and resident of Columbia
City, died April 10, 1983 at Whitley County Hospital. He was born in Noble
County to Albert and Hazel Birch Geiger Scoby and on Nov. 2, 1944 married Gloria
Hamman. They moved to Columbia City. He was employed by the city until his
retirement in 1968 due to illness. Survivors include a half-brother, Earl Dae
Geiger of Wolf Lake; and a half-sister, Mrs. Leroy (Willodean) Whiteman, R. 4,

Scoby. They had lived at High Lake in Noble County about 25 years. Surviving are

County Hospital. Born May 21, 1917 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of James

Streb in 1967, and J. C. Scoby in 1982. She had been a Noble County resident
since 1969 and was formerly employed by Whitley County Hospital before her
retirement. She was a member of the FOE Auxiliary No. 1906, Trainman Auxiliary

Hospital. Born April 25, 1909, he was a native of Noble Twp and
the Big Lake area. He was the son of Albert and Hazel Birch Scoby. His first
wife, Ethel Hoon, died in 1962. He married Gladys Streb of Columbia City
in 1969. He was a lifelong resident of the county, attending the Bug Island and
Wolf Lake Schools. He was retired from Fibre Form and Weatherhead. Surviving are
the wife; a daughter, Martha Lee, Mrs. Robert Wood; 3 grandchildren, Theresa

Scott A W, 92, died Monday at Kendallville Manor Health Care
Center. He was born March 5, 1901 in Hartford, Conn. to John and Sarah
(Watson) Scott. His first wife, Margaret Henderson, died in 1946. He
married Gertrude Berhalter August 9, 1947 in Kendallville. A resident of
Kendallville since 1949, he worked for 44 years at Lincoln National Life
Insurance Co. in Fort Wayne. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church,
Kendallville Lions Club, Little Long Lake Association and had served on the
Noble County Plan Commission. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Donald B. of
Fort Wayne, and Raymond L. of Kendallville; one daughter, Betty S. Newkirk of
Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One sister, Helen

held at Ligonier June 25. She married Eugene Scott 60 years ago in June. He died
several years ago. She resided in Ligonier 48 years, then went to Chicago to
reside with a daughter and later to Indianapolis to reside with 2 daughters,

Church and its Rosary Sodality, Eagles 985 Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors of
American Camp 624 and American Legion Post 86 Auxiliary. Surviving are 4

Ulrey and Mrs. Philip (Cecilia) Schmit of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Larry (Patricia)

son of Robie and Sarah (Moore) Scott. He married Ethel Gibson. He had been a
coal miner and was a veteran of WW II. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters,
Vonda Collins of LaGrange, Judy Collins and Janet Arnold of Kendallville; a son,
Jimmie of Kendallville; 2 sisters, Ethel Wiley of Texas, and Effie Witt of
Nashville, Ten.; 2 brothers, Edgel and Leslie of Wayne, Mich.; and 10

Scott Carroll E, 75, Huntertown, died Dec. 20 in Parkview
Hospital. He was born Nov. 3, 1910 in Augusta, Wis. to George and Leona
Bollinger Scott. He married Agnes Byerley December 22, 1945. The couple have
lived their entire married life in the Huntertown area. Survivors include a son,
Stanley of Huntertown; a daughter, Stacey Urbine, Woodburn; two sisters, Fern
Crawford, Washington, Ind., and Sue Rhodes, Kendallville; and three
grandchildren. He was a WW II Army veteran. He retired in 1964 from Pet Milk Co.

Scott Catherine (Myers) was born in Allegheny County, Penn. March 29,
1817 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Hall, 1 ½ miles north of
Kendallville Feb. 14, aged 80 years 10 months and 16 days. When she was 6 her
parents moved with their family to Athens County, Ohio. Here she resided until
her marriage to St. Clair Scott Oct. 18, 1836. The year following they came to
Clear Springs Twp, LaGrange County, Ind. They had 6 sons
and 7 daughters. Two of her sons bore arms in defense of the Union during the
Civil War. Her husband died in 1866 and one by one her children have followed
him until only 4 daughters and 2 sons remain. She was member of the Methodist
Protestant Church. Funeral was in Sand Hill school house in Clear Springs Twp.

Scott Charles D, 74, a lifelong resident of Albion, died in his sleep
from a heart attack Oct. 29, 1941 and was discovered Thursday by his
daughter, Helen. He was a painter and decorator. His wife, the former Delilah
Black, died in 1939. He is survived by a daughter, Helen at home; 5
stepdaughters, Mrs. Dale Schwab, Mrs. Charles Grate and Mrs. Marshall Young of
Albion, Mrs. Roy Wible of Kendallville, and Mrs. Harvey Green of Garrett; 4

Scott David S died June 29, aged 75 years, 8 months and 9 days. He
was born in Green County, Ohio, Sept. 20, 1822. He came to Indiana in 1850
and engaged in the lumber business at Rider's Mill in Washington Twp. He
removed to Noble Twp in Wolf Lake where he engaged in general
merchandising. In 1866 he moved to Ligonier, starting in as a
broker. He then entered the drug business with his son, J. W. Scott and
continued brokering. In 1872 he was chosen representative of Noble and
Elkhart counties. In 1850 he married Amanda Leonard, a native of Penn. and
a resident of Ohio. She survives, with 2 sons, Eugene and Frank of

Home. Funeral Thursday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home. Burial,
Woodlawn Cemetery. He was born Oct. 23, 1876 in Zanesville to David L. and
Suzannah (Middaugh) Scott. He was married in Auburn in 1904 to Karlene L. Reesch
who died Dec. 22, 1962. He had resided in the area since Oct. 22, 1961, moving
from Jackson, Mich. He was a retired cabinet maker and a member of the
Presbyterian Church, Kendallville. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Clyde
Walker, Country Club Hills, Kendallville; 4 grandchildren; and 7

employee of Dana Corporation, Churubusco, and was a member of Immaculate

worked for U. S. Rubber Co. in Ligonier and later the company sent her to

Goshen Hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1901 in Ober, the son of Frank E. and Rosa
(Sprague) Scott. On June 24, 1925 in Mishawaka he married Helen I. Larimer, who
died in 1952. On Nov. 19, 1960 he married Irma M. Knafel in Goshen. She died in
1983. He moved to the Ligonier area from Goshen in 1960. He was a farmer and
worked for the Indiana State Highway Dept., retiring in 1964. He was a member of

6, 1996 at St. Joseph Hospital. On March 16, 1924 in Columbia City he was
born to Archie and Ruth (Beers) Scott. A 1942 graduate of Wolf Lake High
School, he married Eleanore Klebek in Chicago on November 6, 1948. He was
the owner of Scott Mason and Hatch Real Estate & Insurance which he sold in
1973. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II and retired as a
major from the Air Force Reserve. He was a member of the American Legion,
Elks Lodge and Howard County Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife;

Scott Harriet Olive "Kim", 77, of Seattle, Wash., died Friday
in Group Health Hospital in Redmond, Wash. She was born October 5, 1919 in
Coldwater, Mich. to Linus and Mildred Kimmel. In 1940 she married Henry
Williamson, who died in 1964. In 1966 she married William H. Scott.
A 1937 graduate of Kendallville High School, she was a graduate of Julliard
School of New York City. An accomplished cellist, she was a former member
of symphonies in Erie, Pa., Buffalo, N.Y., Guadalahara, Mexico, and the Seattle
Symphony for 22 years before retiring in 1982. Surviving are her husband;
a daughter Lucinda Freece; and a son, Peter Williamson, both of Seattle; 5
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 2 sisters, Rebecca Muesing and Phyllis

Scott James W died last Saturday. The oldest son of D. S. and
Amanda Scott was born in what is now the little village of Wilmot, then known as
Ryder’s Mills, Jan. 7, 1851. His parents shortly afterward moved to Wolf Lake
where he spent his early boyhood. He became a resident of Ligonier 1863. Since
that time with the exception of one year spent in Columbia City, he has resided
in this city. In 1873 he married Kit B. Brand at Columbia City. A few months
later he formed a co-partnership with Ferd Sandrock embarking in the drug
business to be succeeded a few years later by D. S. Scott & Son. For the
past 10 years he has been the U. S. express agent here. Funeral at the

Saturday from heart trouble. He was born in Ege June 5, 1878, the son of John
and Maria Scott. He came there in 1933 and engaged in various activities

Scott John Hudson, 74, died January 7, 2000 in Parkview Hospital, Fort
Wayne. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1944 and served in the
U.S. Army during WW II. A farmer, he worked 10 years at Monsanto and later
at Wickes Lumber in Huntertown for more than 17 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of Wolf Lake United Methodist Church and VFW Post 4717. He
was born August 29, 1925 in Columbia City to Archie Allen and Ruth Amanda
(Beers) Scott. He married Evelyn L. Oliver on December 14, 1946. She
died May 4, 1989. He married Marceil McDowell Wiley on April 14,
1990. Surviving are his wife in Wolf Lake; 3 sons, Roger L. of Weston,
Neb., Tommy A. of Statesville, N.C., and Bradley E. of Albion; 3 stepchildren; 2

cerebral hemorrhage. She was found ill in her home at 104 Richmond St.,
Ligonier, by her former employer on the first day of her retirement. She was
born April 3, 1908 to George and Sarah (Miller) Pinchon in Ligonier,
where she lived her lifetime. She married Wayne Scott May 6, 1931 in Goshen. He
died in 1968. She was employed by Banner Drugs, Ligonier. Services

Scott Marceil L Wiley, 82, of Wolf Lake, died Aug. 31, 2008 at Lutheran
Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born April 24, 1926 in Fort Wayne, a
daughter of Roswell and Carrie (Fusselman) McDowell. She graduated from
Wolf Lake High School. On June 3, 1945 she married Frederick Wiley.
He died July 30, 1986. On Aril 14, 1990 she married John Scott. He
died Jan. 7, 2000. She was an LPN at Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake and
retired from Monsanto with 30 years of service. Surviving are 2 sons, Al
(Katy) Wiley of Albion and Rob (Cheri) Wiley of Auburn; a daughter, April Day of
Brundige, Alabama; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a brother,
Robert McDowell of Avilla. She was also preceded in death by a sister,

severe burns on her back and body when she accidentally came in contact with an
electric heater about 2 weeks ago at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harvey Green
in Garrett where she was spending the winter. She was born March 26, 1858 and
died March 8, 1939, aged 80 years, 11 months and 8 days. Her parents were among

has ever since resided. She married John Scott June 21, 1874. She lived
to see all her family die except one aged half-sister, whose home is in

retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Church of the True God, South Milford.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Hazel Shaw of Troutwood, Ohio; a son,
Vincent Davidson of Wolcottville; a sister, Tina Darnell of Cincinnati; 2
brothers, Rev. Albert of Danville, Ky., and Joe of Mason, Ohio; 3 grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Scott Ruth A, 82, R. 1, Kimmell, died Wednesday at the
Strawberry Village Nursing Home, Ligonier. She was born May 6, 1894 in Etna Twp
of Whitley County to John and Amanda (Rider) Beers. On March 30, 1922 she
married Archie Allen Scott. They resided in Columbia City until 1931 when they
moved 2 ½ miles north of Ormas. She was a member of the Ormas Baptist Church
and the Washington Twp Home Extension Club. Survivors include on daughter, Mrs.
Gilford (Nila) Bennett, R. 2, Albion; 4 sons, Harold A., Kokomo, John H., R. 2,
Albion, Joseph E., Walkerton, and Robert L., Ligonier; 12 grandchildren; and 3
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband. Services

Scott Susie (Norris), 73, died at her home in Wawaka Wednesday from
cancer. She was born near the Elkhart River west of Albion and had resided in
this community most of her life, moving to Wawaka several years ago. Surviving
are the husband, Edward; a brother, William Norris of Fort Wayne, and one

Walter I. and Eva May Scott, died June 18 at the home of her grandfather, George

Scott Velma W, 68, R. 1, Kimmell, died Wednesday at her home from
complications. She was born in the house in which she died on Sept. 14, 1898,
the daughter of Calvert and Amelia (Gilbert) Metz. In 1949 she was married to
Charles Dewey Scott. Survivors include her husband; 2 daughters, Mrs. Colby
(Alberta) Gandy, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Herbert (Jean) Clark, Matawan, N.J.;
2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Roger (Jean) Long, Pierceton, Mrs. Francis (Joan) Shear of
R. 1, North Webster; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Grace) Knapp, Goshen; 5
grandchildren; one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a brother and a
half-sister. Funeral Saturday at Harris-Troxel Chapel at North Webster. +

Scott Walter Ross died at the LaGrange County Hospital Nov. 22 from a heart ailment. Funeral was Saturday
at Lima Presbyterian Church. He was born in Ontario, Ind. Aug. 2, 1875, the second son
in the family of 8 children of Joseph G. and Sarah J. Scott. Both parents and 3
brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by 2 brothers, Robert F. of South
Bend, and W. Arthur of Ontario; and by two sisters, Mrs. Carl Willard of
LaGrange and Mrs. Ledger McKibben of West Lafayette. His first school days began
in the gray schoolhouse just down the road from the Ontario home and continued
in the brick schoolhouse which is now used for the community center in the town.
After school hours, especially on Saturdays, his father usually assigned him and
his elder brother on jobs in the Ontario woolen factory. + 11-29-1950
Scott Wyvona, 85, died April 3, 2009 at Shepherd of the Hill Nursing
Home, Kendallville. She was born March 17, 1924 to Emanuel and Alta (Stienbarger)
Christlieb in Ligonier. Preceding her in death were a brother, Roland
Christlieb in 1916 and a half sister, Maredith Barnes in 1996. She married
Raymond Scott in Kendallville on June 27, 1945. He died in 1974. She
was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church and worked at the Lutheran Home,
King Seely and Magnavox. Surviving are her sons, DeLane and Diann Scott of
Ashley and Dalelyn Scott of Kendallville; 3 granddaughters, Kelly and Larry
McCoy and their children, Stephanie, Ashlee, Katie, Cassidy, Destiny, Aleczander,
Christian and Ruby of Butler, DeLayna and Kenny Lehner and their children, Avery
and Austin Scott of Garrett, and TiNaya and Timn Gorski and their children,
Austin, Seth and Gabriel of Madison, Ind. Services Monday at Hite Funeral

Scovil Azubah, 90, died Nov. 16, 1876 at her residence in Jefferson Twp,
aged 90 years, 8 months and 25 days. She was born in Conn. Feb. 22, 1786. She
was a member of Mt Salem Church in Jefferson Twp. She outlived her husband many years and lived

Scowden Jack L, 69, Kendallville, died June 8, 2003 at home. He was
born January 10, 1934 to Earl and Fannie (Hardesty) Scowden in Essex, Mo.
Surviving are 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Jackie Warnick of Columbia City and
Sharon and Craig Bickel of Washington, Mich.; a sister, Opal Robb of Chicago;
and 3 grandchildren, Caleb, Noel and Jacob Bickel. Preceding him in death
were 10 brothers and sisters. He was a pastor at several churches and was
currently the assistant pastor at True Church of God in Lisbon. He was a
shoe cobbler for 11 years, a veteran of the U. S. Army, where he served s a
helicopter and airplane mechanic. He worked for many years at Kendallville

Scribner Raymond Harold, 77, died April 8 at Parkview
Hospital in Fort Wayne. A resident of Albion, he was born in Decatur, Ill. He
retired from Brunson Step Co. in 1974. Survivors include the widow, Nellie; 3
sons, Verne, Hal and Duane Keith of Fort Wayne; 4 daughters, Mrs. Evelyn
Kahlenbeck of Albion, Mrs. Florence Addis, Mrs. Peggy Bair and Mrs. Shirley
Thomas of Fort Wayne; 2 brothers, Robert and Donald of Fort Wayne; 4 sisters,
Mrs. Ora Bradtmueller, Mrs. Florence Schumacher, Mrs. Grace Orem and Mrs. Betty
Bauer of Fort Wayne; 36 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. One son,

She was retired as registration clerk in the emergency room at Parkview.

Whitley County Hospital. He was a retired member of the Fort Wayne Police Dept.
and a retired police commissioner of Columbia City. Survivors are his wife,

Middlebury, and Vilas, Fort Wayne; 3 sisters, Emma Plummer, Bluffton; Verta
