Rife Bertha May
, 94, died June 8, 2004 at Avalon Village in Ligonier. She was educated in the Wolf Lake School and was a member of Big Lake Church of God. She was born May 1, 1910 near Wolf Lake to John and Minnie (Mack) Gray. In 1927 she married Arthur "Bob" Rife. He died Oct. 21, 1975. Also preceding her in death were a son, Virgil, in 1951; a sister, Clara Boner; and 6 brothers, Walter, Arthur, Carl, Ralph, Harry and Vernie Gray. Services Monday at Big Lake Church of God. Rife Harry F, 71, Rome City, died at home Friday. He was born in Rome City June 8, 1901 to Elmer A. and Jennie (Cobbs) Rife. On Jan. 1963 he married Leona Longnecker. He retired from General Electric, Fort Wayne, in 1961, was a member of Summit City Masonic Lodge 170, Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne, and National Rifle Association. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert E., Kendallville, and Dr. Donald M., Burlington, Va.; a stepson, Dr. David E. Longnecker, Columbia, Mo.; 4 sisters, Mrs. Lena Shull, Rome City, Mrs. Helen Duff, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Mercedes Reynolds, Rome City, and Mrs. Viola Coffel, Kendallville; and 3 grandchildren. Rife Jennie Pearl, 94, died Sunday in the Lutheran Home. Born July 30, 1876 in Rome City, she was the daughter of pioneer merchant Henry G. and Celesta (Winebrenner) Cobbs. The last immediate survivors of the Cobbs family, she lived most of her life in Noble County. She was married to Elmer A. Rife, who died in 1935. She was a member of the OES in Rome City. Surviving are a son, Harry, Rome City; 4 daughters, Mrs. Helen Duff, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Henry (Lena) Shull, Rome City, Mrs. Hugh (Mercedes) Reynolds and Mrs. Robert (Violet) Coffel, Kendallville; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandsons. Riggle Leon, 59, R. 1, Wawaka, died Friday in St. Joseph’s Hospital. Funeral Monday at Klaehn Funeral Home, Fort Wayne. Burial, Greenlawn Memorial Park. An employee of International Harvester Co., he had lived in Fort Wayne until last year when he moved to Wawaka. He was a member of Rome City Lodge 451, F&AM, OES at Rome City, and Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shine Temple in Fort Wayne. Riggle Margaret, 63, R. 1, Wawaka, died Dec. 21at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City. She was the daughter of Clyde and Alyce (Hetzner) Miller, born Oct. 10, 1912 in Steuben County. Her husband, Leon, died Sept. 20, 1971. She had been a music teacher, a member of the United Methodist Church at Brimfield, and OES 595 at Rome City. Riggs Don B, 65, of Meridian, Miss., a former resident of Montpelier, Ind., and a Cromwell visitor on numerous occasions, died Nov. 24 following a heart attack while serving as Santa Claus in a store in Meridian. He was the stepfather of Norton "Steve" Dodds, formerly of Cromwell and now in Okinawa. Other survivors include the widow, Anna Lou; 2 daughters, Mrs. Mary Anette Phares and Mrs. Peggy West of Houston, Texas; 6 grandchildren; a half-brother and a half-sister in Keystone, Ind. + 11-24-1956
Rigsby Judd R, 37, R. 1, LaOtto, died Oct. 23 in McCray Hospital. He was born in Kendallville, the son of James and Eldora (Eagleson) Rigsby. He married Sandra Amerman Sept. 26, 1970 in Brimfield. He moved to LaOtto eight years ago from Columbia City. He was self-employed in car repair and body work, and was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict. He was a member of the Rollin’ Oldies Antique Car Club in Kendallville. Surviving are his mother and wife; a daughter, Ronda, and a son, Jesse, both at home; a sister, Lorena Jones of Fort Wayne; a brother, Dewey of Fort Wayne; a half-brother, James Howard Rigsby of Troy, Ohio. Rigsby Stephanie K, 16, a lifetime Fort Wayne resident, died Sunday in Parkview Hospital. She was the daughter of Henry Jr. and Marcia Rigsby, and a student at the Mabel Holland School who had participated in Special Olympics. Surviving are her parents; a brother, Stephen at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Esterline of Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry V. Riles Shirley, 60, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Saturday in Sebring Hospital, Sebring, Fla. She was born in Kendallville on May 30, 1934 to Clarence and DeAnna (King) Frick. On May 28, 1959 in St. Petersburg she married David Riles. A 1952 graduate of Wawaka High School, she was a 1956 graduate of Lutheran School of Nursing in Fort Wayne. She was a surgical nurse for 30 years in Bay Front Regional Hospital in St. Petersburg. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Beth Ann Riles of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Phillip of St. Petersburg; and a sister, Joyce Hooten of Kendallville. Riley Ancell, 82, of Howe, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John May of Redkey, Ind. July 23 from complications. He had been a resident of Howe for the past 35 years. He is survived by the widow, Jane Ann; 3 daughters, Mrs. Sam Hixon of Miami, Fla., Mrs. John Haines of Marion, and Mrs. May; 2 sons, Herb of Mishawaka, and Lewis of near Van Wert, O.; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Riley Columbus J Jr., 50, died Friday at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis of a heart attack. An employee of Manley Popcorn Co., Kimmell, he had been a resident here 4 years. Previously he resided in Muncie and Ky. He was a WW II veteran. He was born May 19, 1925 in Lee County, Ky., to Colen and Bertha Mae (Price) Riley. He married Jean Spencer in Ky. in 1971. She survives, along with 2 daughters, Mrs. Alpa Napier, Indianapolis and Mrs. Don Neace, Muncie; a son, Dana, Muncie; a stepson, Joe at home; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Morris, Muncie; 2 brothers, Cleve, Muncie, and Melvin, Hazard, Ky.; and 6 grandchildren. She was a member of the Howe Methodist Church. Riley Marcia L, 71, of Kendallville, died October 21, 2011, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Garrett. She was born in Kendallville on December 24, 1939, to William A. and Garnet B. (Ross) Mapes. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1958 and went on to study cosmetology in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She opened her own salon, Mar-Lana Boutique, in the early ’60s and retired in 1992. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kendallville. Survivors include a daughter, Elana and Rick Young of Garrett; a brother, William and Marilyn Mapes of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Carolyn and Perry Hirst of Anderson, Ind.; two stepsons; and a granddaughter, Holly Young of Garrett. Rimmel Aaron J, 68, a lifelong resident of Albion, died March 5, 1968 at McCray Hospital following a heart attack. He was born in Albion Feb. 27, 1900, the son of Sherman and Flossie (Trumbull) Rimmel. He and his son Max owned and operated the Limberlost Country Club at Rome City. He was a veteran of WW I and a member of the Albion American Legion Post 246. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; his son, Max of Albion; a stepson, Donald K. Schwab, Warrenville, Ill.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Beth Breeden, Mrs. Edith Frymier and Mrs. Ruby Stringfellow of Albion; one brother, Bernard of Battle Creek, Mich.; and 5 grandchildren. Rimmel Aaron J, lifelong resident of Jefferson Twp, died at his home Nov. 23 due to a dropsical affliction. Born in Richland County, O., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rimmel, he came to Noble County with his parents when he was a year old. Enlisting in Co. E. of the 100th Indiana Volunteers, he served well and faithfully. He married Jane Anna Walters Dec. 31, 1868 and they had 4 children. The widow and 3 children survive, Sherman of Albion, Samuel I., of Jefferson Twp, and Mrs. Winnie Wible of Allen Twp; 3 brothers, Louis of Cosperville, and Amos and Albert of near Kendallville; and one sister, Mrs. Almeda Newlin of Kendallville. Rimmel Albert, 83, farmer and lifelong resident of Noble County, died at his home near Kendallville Wednesday of last week from a stroke of paralysis. Funeral was Friday from the Center Chapel at Kendallville. Burial, Lake View Cemetery. He was born in Jefferson Twp on Nov. 17, 1853, the son of Samuel and Susan Rimmel. He married Viola Waldron of Orange Twp in March 1879. She died several years ago. Surviving are 6 children, Mrs. Carl Poage at home, Mrs. Howard Arehart of Kendallville, Mrs. Charles Weimer of near Kendallville, Leo and Carl at home, and Earl of near Kendallville; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. + 11-?-1936
Rimmel Alfred I, 82, of LaGrange, died Jan. 12, 2009 in Miller's Merry Manor in LaGrange. He was a music instructor and served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during WW II. He was born Sept. 2, 1926 in Brimfield to Howard and Ethel Rimmel. Surviving are a daughter, Adlen Graff of Fort Wayne; 3 grandchildren, Chris Rimmel, David and Doug Ott; and 2 great-grandchildren, Cody Coyer and Paige Rimmel. Rimmel Amos G, 86, died Wednesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born August 11, 1908 in Kendallville to Glenn and Minnie (Black) Rimmel. He married Hilda Funk on February 15, 1964 in Coldwater, Mich. She died December 9, 1987. He owned and operated the Agar Bug Co. in Auburn for 30 years and was a retired antique dealer. Surviving are 4 daughters, Marilyn Schaab and Cynthia Miller of Fort Wayne, Martha Mapes of Avilla, and Sandra Tharp of Phoenix, Ariz.; 2 stepdaughters; one sister, Margaret Logan of Kendallville; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Rimmel Azora, age 60, wife of Samuel I. Rimmel, residing four miles west of this city, died Sunday at Lakeside Hospital from diabetes. She was born March 15, 1875, the daughter of John and Mary Melvin Halferty. She was married January 13, 1894 to Samuel I. Rimmel. They had 6 children. Surviving are three sons and three daughters, John of Lawton, Okla., Dallas of Kendallville, Howard of Brimfield, Mrs. Leone Jaquay of Albion, Mrs. Evelyn Iddings of Pleasant Lake, and Mrs. Florence Weimer of Avilla. Two sisters, Mrs. George Rauh of Corunna and Mrs. William Flotow of Kendallville, and 22 grandchildren also survive. Funeral Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Church. Burial, Mt. Rimmel Bernard S, 79, a resident of Battle Creek, died Saturday at Lakeview General Hospital in Battle Creek. He was born in Albion and moved to Battle Creek in 1929 from Kalamazoo. He was a 1923 graduate of Albion High School and was employed by Kroger Co. 20 years and later owned and operated 2 grocery stores in Battle Creek. Until his retirement in 1970 he worked 17 years for Clark Equipment. Surviving are his wife, the former Pauline P. Peck; a daughter, Suzanne McLinden of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son, Dr. Rex of Ithaca, Mich.; 3 sisters, Beth Breeden, Colorado Springs, Colo., Edith Frymier of Kendallville, and Ruby Stringfellow of Albion; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Rimmel Dallas "Bing", 73, died April 1 in Alfran Nursing Home, Columbia City. He was born in Jefferson Twp Dec. 30, 1907, the son of Samuel and Zoe (Halferty) Rimmel. He married Velma M. Frederick Nov. 20, 1929 in Albion. She died July 16, 1974. He was a lifetime Albion area resident and a retired farmer. He was a charter member of Albion Eagles, Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge in Kendallville. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Klopfenstine, Kendallville, and Dortha Herendeen, R. 3, Fort Wayne; two sons, Elvia, R. 2, Albion, and Floyd, R. 3, Kendallville; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Iddings Albion, and Mrs. Florence Weimer, Kendallville; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.. Rimmel Dolores (Berberick) died Aug. 7 at her residence in Lakeland, Fla. Graveside services will be Sunday at Oak Park Cemetery. She was a Wis. native but in 1910 moved to Cromwell where she made her home until moving to Fla. 10 years ago. She was a graduate of Cromwell High School and attended Ball State, Muncie, and had taught school in Cromwell, Ligonier and Warsaw. She and her husband farmed and managed a filling station in the Cromwell area many years. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and OES No. 325, Ligonier. Surviving are her husband, Ward; a niece, Ruth Rhinehart of Fort Wayne; and 2 nephews, Dean Needham of Fort Wayne and Russell Hawk of Elkhart. + 8-7-1983
Rimmel Doris, 81, of Albion, died Nov. 12, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Indianapolis. She owned Limberlost Country Club for 30 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of OES in Albion. She was born June 17, 1923 in Auburn to Gerald and Ethel (Snyder) Grover. On Jan. 30, 1946 she married Max A. Rimmel in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Albion. He died Feb. 7, 1996. Surviving are 2 daughters, Deborah Navabi of Chicago and Patricia Towfighi of Indianapolis; 2 sisters, Frances Thomas of Albion and Patricia King of Fla.; and 3 grandchildren, Joseph and Alexander Towfighi and Sussan Navabi. Rimmel Edna B, 101, of Rome City, died Feb. 4, 2014 in North Ridge Village Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Albion. She retired after 30 years as a teacher. She was a member of the Rome City United Methodist Church. She was born Dec. 16, 1912 in Terry, Miss., to Ramsey and Jessica (Clower) Chapman. On Aug. 9, 1942 in Lambert, Miss., she married Robert Rimmel. He died March 18, 1999. Surviving are 2 daughters, Elline Rimmel of Rome City and Martha Rimmel of Truth or Consquences, N.M. Rimmel Effie Mae, 45, died Saturday at the family home in Jefferson Twp from cancer. The daughter of the late William Wallace, she married George B. Rimmel 19 years ago.They had one daughter and 4 sons. Surviving are the husband; daughter and sons: Mary E., William, Fred, Robert and Russell, all at home; one stepdaughter, Mrs. William Hague of near Brimfield; a sister, Mrs. John Adams, Avilla; a brother, Roy of Detroit; and a half-sister in South Bend. Rimmel Ella May, daughter of David and Lovina Munk, was born in Noble County near Kendallville May 29, 1875, and died in the same community on Sept. 9, 1904, aged 29 years, 3 months and 10 days. Rimmel Evelyn Schwab, 99, of Dowagiac, died Nov. 17, 2005 at Lakeland Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center. She was a member of OES in Albion. She was born Dec. 5, 1905 in Whitley County to Volney and Bertha (McConnell) King. On July 16, 1925 in Noble County she married Frederick Jacob Schwab. He died May 31, 1952. On Jan. 10, 1954 in Rome City she married Aaron Rimmel. He preceded her in death. Surviving are 3 granddaughters and their husbands, Elaine and David Conner, Sharon and George Riecke and Joan and Gary Witchen; 6 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Schwab; 3 sisters, Lucille Rhinehart, Louisa Biddle and Mary Patton; and 2 brothers, Clayton and Isaac King. No services. Rimmel Glenn S, R. 3, Kendallville, a retired farmer who had been active in the Noble County Fair, died April 24, 1969 at Irene Byron Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born July 24, 1887 in Orange Twp, the son of Amos and Annette (Smith) Rimmel. He married Minnie Black June 15, 1907. She died in 1961. A lifetime resident of this area, he was a member of United Methodist Center Chapel and had sold farmers’ insurance for a time. Survivors include 3 sons, Amos of Auburn, Harold of Modesto, Calif., and John at home; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Logan of R. 3, Albion; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; 2 sons, Harold Richard of San Diego, and Robert Ray of Modesto; a brother, Amos of Fort Wayne; and a sister, Margaret Logan of Kendallville; 6 granddaughters and one grandson. Rimmel Hilda B, 80, Auburn, died Wednesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born Aug. 18, 1907 in Butler, the daughter of Jacob E. and Ella (Dohner) Coll. She married Amos Rimmel Feb. 20, 1962 in Coldwater, Mich. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Janice Huffman, Garrett, and Joyce Yates of Nashville, Ind.; four stepdaughters, Sandra Tharp of Phoenix, Ariz., Marilyn Miller and Cynthia Zuber, both Fort Wayne, and Martha Mapes of Avilla; three grandchildren. She was a retired organist, playing for area churches, funeral homes and the former Silver Moon skating rink in rural Waterloo, and taught piano for 10 years. Rimmel Howard R, 71, died Monday in McCray Hospital. He was born June 3, 1899 in Noble County to Samuel and Zoe (Halferty) Rimmel. He was married in 1924 in Centreville, Mich. to Ethel Schauweker. He operated several service stations in and around Rome City for many years. Rimmel Jane Ann was born June 6, 1846 to Ephriam and Mary Walters in Jefferson Twp, the farm being situated only a half mile north of the late home. On December 31, 1868 she married Aaron Rimmel. They had 4 children, Sherman W., Olive E., Samuel I. and Minnie Pearl. The daughter, Olive, died Dec. 17, 1913, and the husband, Nov. 23, 1922. She united with the Summit M. E. Church many years ago. She leaves 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John, of the state of Washington and Jesse Walters, a nephew to whom she has given a home for several years. He had resided his entire life in Orange Twp until 1982 when he moved to Irene Byron. He was a retired farmer. Rimmel Leo Curtis, about 70, a native and lifelong resident of Noble County, died June 27, 1951 at the home of Elton Huff 4 miles northwest of Kendallville. Death was due to complications. He was born Feb. 28, 1881 in Orange Twp, the son of Albert and Viola Rimmel, pioneers of this area. Most of his life was spent on the Rimmel homestead. He was a carpenter and for a few years was employed at Flint & Walling. Rimmel Marion H, 61, a Noble County native, died June 20 in Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Aurora, Colo. He completed his 31-year Army career in 1973 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in both WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher and principal in the Denver Public Schools 1949-1986, retiring in Feb. Rimmel Max A, 72, died Wednesday in Georgetown, Great Exuma, Bahamas. He was born July 17, 1923 in Kendallville to Aaron and Verda (Pontius) Rimmel. On January 20, 1946 in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Albion he married Doris Grover. A lifetime Albion resident, he owned and operated Limberlost Country Club in Rome City for 30 years. He retired in 1985. He was a WW II U.S. Marines veteran and a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post 246, Albion, VFW Post 2749, and Elks Lodge 1194, both Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Deborah Navabi of Chicago and Patricia Towfighi of Indianapolis; 3 grandchildren, Joseph and Alexander Towfighi and Sussan Navabi. Rimmel Nelda Mae, 52, of 1324 Ludwig Park Dr., and formerly of Kendallville, died Thursday in Parkview Hospital. She died from smoke inhalation when a cigarette she had been smoking slipped under a couch cushion, causing a fire. Her son, Christopher, 16, awoke about 12:30 a.m. Thursday by smoke and attempted to rescue his mother who was asleep in her room. Smoke had filled the hallway preventing him from continuing and he was forced to break his bedroom window and escape. She was a salesman at Olan Mills Photography Studio. Rimmel Orlo Lewis, 69, died in a White Plains, N.Y. nursing home. He was born in Elkhart Twp May 17, 1899, a son of Louis and Alphretta (McWherter) Rimmel. He left this community about 40 years ago and was a resident of New York City where he was engaged in the import and export trade until his retirement. Rimmel Robert Roy, 85, of Rome City, died March 18 in Bethlehem Woods Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne. He was born in Kendallville July 30, 1913 to George Byron and Effie Mae (Wallace) Rimmel. On Aug. 9, 1942 in Lambert, Miss. he married Edna "Bert" Chapman. A 1931 graduate of Kendallville High School, he was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a farmer and retired from Kraft Foods after 10 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II and a past member of Center Chapel. Rimmel Samuel, 81, was born in Bedford County, Penn. in Feb. 1816. His parents died when he was in infancy. He removed to Richland County, Ohio with his foster parents when he was 6 years old. He married Susan Stout Jan. 5, 1838 in the same county. They had 6 boys and 4 girls; one of the girls died at the age of 3. The children are all married and with the exception of 2 who live in Michigan, reside in Noble County. In 1844 he moved from Ohio to Jefferson Twp and lived in Noble County since. He spent 53 years in Indiana, 11 years of which was in Jefferson Twp and the remainder on his farm in Orange Twp. He died at the age of 81 from organic trouble of the heart and dropsy. Rimmel Susan, 79, widow of Samuel Rimmel who died a few years ago, died Tuesday north of the city. Funeral was Thursday from the church near the residence. ^ 1-20-1899 A pioneer resident of Orange Twp, she died Jan. 16 at the age of 79 years and 12 days. She was born in Richland County, Ohio, Jan. 5, 1820; was married to Samuel Rimmel Jan. 15, 1838; moved to Noble County in 1844; settled in Jefferson Twp and lived there 11 years; then moved to Orange Twp and settled on the farm on which she died. Her husband, Samuel, died 2 years ago. They had 10 children, 9 of whom are living. The one gone died at the age of 3. The living are Jonathan, Amos, Albert, Almeda, Newlin, Aaron J., Almira Appleman of LaGrange County, Lewis of Elkhart Twp and George. Twenty-eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. She joined the Methodist Protestant Church in 1859. Rimmel Viola, the eldest daughter of Jacob and Mary Waldron, was born near Rome City Nov. 4, 1857; died at her home near Kendallville Oct. 23, 1919, aged 61 years, 11 months and 23 days. Surviving are the husband and 6 children, Mrs. Charles Weimer of Jefferson Twp, Mrs. Carl Poage of Kendallville, Mrs. Howard Arehart of Orange Twp, and sons Leo, Earl and Carlton at home. One daughter, Nellie, died in infancy. There are also one brother, Sherman, and one sister, Mrs. James Burnett of Rome City. She remained in her girlhood home until her 22nd year. She married Earl J. Rimmel Aug. 16, 1925. He died in 1954. She was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist, Orange Twp Homemakers’ Club and Oak Grove Ladies Aid. There are no immediate survivors. Rindy Maude W, 95, was born in Avilla Nov. 25, 1883 to Franklin T. and Martha E. (Henry) Bixler. She married Leroy A. Williams April 10, 1915 and he died Nov. 8, 1947. She then married John G. Rindy Aug. 5, 1956 and he preceded her in death June 28, 1967. She attended the Noble County Fair each year with the exception of 1974, the only year in her lifetime she was unable to attend. She was a former Kendallville resident. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Laura Ellen) Meacham of Havertown, Pa.; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Rinebolt Jacob, 92, formerly of Kendallville, and last surviving member of the Kendallville GAR Post, died Monday at Toledo following a heart attack. Although yet in his teens at the close of the Civil War, he had served 18 months under command of General McClellan and was engaged in several major battles. He is survived by 2 sons, William and Ora of Kendallville; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Nettie Hanford and Mrs. Sarrie Bishop, both of Toledo. Funeral March 17 at First Evangelical. Four children were born including Lillian, who died 7 years ago and Donald who died in infancy in 1913. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 376 D or R and the Presbyterian church. On December 12, 1922 in Centreville, Mich., she married Owen Leitch. He died July 6, 1978. On May 10, 1989 in Albion she married Carl Rinehart. He died December 26, 1993. A lifetime Noble County resident, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albion. Surviving are a daughter, Fay Malony of Albion; 2 sons, Orland Leitch of Albion, and Marion Leitch of Statesboro, Ga.; 31 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Rinehart Joshua S, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Rinehart, was born in Ohio May 9, 1851 and moved to Noble County with his parents when a young boy. He died at his home at W. Mitchell and Lincoln Streets last Saturday. He married Lucy Brothwell near Hillsdale, Mich. in April 1876. They had one daughter, Veda B. Mrs. Rinehart died in Nov. 1892. On April 30, 1894 he married Mrs. Victoria Highbargin of Rome City. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. E. E. Kesler of Rome City; a brother, S. D., and a sister, Mrs. Levi Harvey of Jefferson Twp. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Rome City Lodge F&AM, and Noble Chapter No. 122 OES. Rinehart Lucy C was born in Elkhart Twp Oct. 29, 1847. She with her father, Hon. John F. Brothwell and family, came to Rome City in 1867 and most of her life was spent in that vicinity. She was engaged in teaching school in and about Rome City for some time. She married Joshua S. Rinehart April 4, 1876. In June 1890, she with her husband and only daughter, Veda, came to Kendallville where she died Nov. 21, aged 45 years and 22 days. Funeral was in Rome City on Wednesday. She had been a missionary in India for 15 years and later worked as a registered nurse. She lived in Colorado Springs, Colo. before coming to Ligonier in 1968. Ritchie James K, 26, R. 3, Ligonier, apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car and drove left of center on U. S. 6 going west near Edgerton, Ohio. His car was struck by an eastbound semi-tractor driven by Thomas Rodman, Garrett. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Bryan Cameron Hospital early Oct. 14. He was born in Hindman, Ky., on Dec. 12, 1951, the son of Jennings R. and Nancy (Clemons) Ritchie. He had lived in the Ligonier area the past ten years. He married Catherine Riddle in Cosperville on Dec. 25, 1969. He was employed by ConRail and was a member of the Ligonier Eagles Lodge and American Legion No. 243. She graduated from Lakeland High School and Ivy Tech, Fort Wayne, in 1983. She was a secretary at Deca-Tech in Kendallville and Eaton Controls for a period of time and she was a real estate agent for Colwell-Banker, Shrock Real Estate from 1996-2008. She attended the New Freedom Baptist Church in LaGrange. Survivors include a daughter, Tammy and George Wolfe of Wolcottville; a son, Ridgely Ritter Jr. of Wolcottville; 10 grandchildren, Amanda Cressey, Kaitlyn Wolfe, Tyler Ritter, Payton Ritter, Natalie Ritter, Brody Ritter, Ivory Ritter, Brooke Ritter, Tristin Ritter and Jade Ritter; one great-grandchild, Kourtney Rupert; 3 brothers, Jasper and Wanda Case of Wolcottville, Wade and Deb Sturdivant of LaGrange and David Sturdivant of Wolcottville; a sister, Jackie and Denny Thompson of Topeka. Ritter Pauline J, 89, died Sunday at Ligonier Health Care Center. She was born in Ligonier December 1, 1903 to Earl and Viola (Fry) Flowers. On August 17, 1941 in Ligonier, she married Lawrence Gay Ritter, who died in 1986. A lifetime Ligonier area resident, she was a retired secretary and bookkeeper for Ligonier Ice Co., Studebaker and Singer Sewing Machine. She was a member of Sparta United Church of Christ in Kimmell, Washington Twp Homemakers' Club and Cromwell Cloud Chasers. Her only survivor is a sister, Ruth Hanna of Dowagiac, Mich. Ritter Rebecca, 77, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. W. Hartsuck on S. State St. from neurasthenia and complications. Three daughters and 3 sons survive, Mrs. G. W. Ritter Richard D "Tex", 64, of 102 Grand St., Ligonier, died Wednesday in Goshen Hospital. He was born Feb. 8, 1925 in Kimmell, the son of Forrest and Ruth (Growcock) Ritter. A lifetime area resident, he was retired from the U. S. Post Office in Ligonier. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of WW II and a member of West Noble American Legion Post 243, VFW Post 3931, Ligonier Elks No. 451 and Ligonier Eagles 1763. Surviving are a daughter, Wendy of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Ridgley of Syracuse; a brother, Donald of Ligonier; 6 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There will be no services. + 6-21-1989
Ritter Ruth, 71, 400 Water St., Ligonier, died Wednesday in Goshen General Hospital of complications following a stroke. She was born Nov. 9, 1903 in Noble County to Frank and Mary (Heffner) Growcock and was a lifetime resident of the community. She married Forrest Ritter January 29, 1920. She was a former factory employee in Ligonier. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Richard (Tex) and Donald, both Ligonier; one brother and two sisters, Floyd Growcock, Mrs. Ralph Schlotterback and Mrs. Fred Duesler, Ligonier; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ritter Sarah L, 75, died in Saddle Back Community Hospital in Laguna Hills, Calif. Dec. 19. A former Kendallville resident, she had resided in Calif. since 1961. The daughter of Charles and Sarah (Benton) Lohman, he married Milton Ritter on June 19, 1930 in Howe. He died Oct. 22, 1965. Ritter Sidney C, 85, of Corvalles, Ore., died there Thursday. He was born in Noble County Aug. 29, 1898, the son of William and Blanche (Nickerson) Ritter. On May 1, 1926 in Albion he married Edna Anspaugh. A retired factory worker, he moved to Ore. in Nov. 1983. Ritter Tiffany A, 36, of Fort Wayne, died Jan. 6. 2010 in Syracuse. She had worked at Seranade Foods in Milford. She was born Sept. 22, 1973 in LaGrange to Terry and Kathy (Strouse) Fulford. She married Travis Ritter on Jan. 1, 1994 in Valentine. He died July 19, 2001. Ritter Travis Lee, 30, of Syracuse, died July 19, 2001 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, from injuries he received in an auto accident near Larwill. He was born Aug. 3, 1970 to Ridgely and Pauline (Sturdivant) Ritter. He married Tiffany Fulford on Jan. 1, 1994 in Valentine, Ind. He was a factory worker for Forest River Trailer Co., Goshen, and a member of sons of the American Legion, Ligonier. Ritter Wesley Charles, 78, died Thursday in McCray Hospital. He was born in Sharonville, Ohio Jan. 14, 1900 and married Anna B. Hail March 6, 1965 in Newport, Ky. She survives. He was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge No. 142 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rittermeyer Robert H, 66, 240 Lima Plank Road, died Sunday from an apparent heart attack while serving as a security guard at Kraft Foods. The son of William and Clara (Wehmeyer) Rittermeyer, he was born Feb. 10, 1910 in Kendallville. On Nov. 15, 1945, he married Virginia R. Schlichtenmyer in South Bend. A lifetime resident of Kendallville, he was employed by the DeVries Security Guard Inc. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Gerard (Kay) Krull, Kendallville; one son, Robert Charles, Rome City; 2 sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Ruth) Teagno, Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Mrs. William (Dorothy) Gerding, Fort Wayne; and 4 grandchildren. Rittermeyer Virginia R, 92, of Winchester, Kentucky, and formerly of Kendallville, died April 11, 2013, in Fountain Circle Health & Rehabilitation in Winchester. She lived in Kendallville until 1981 when she moved to Florida to live with her daughter. In 2004, they moved to Winchester. She was a waitress at the Publix Café in Kendallville. Later, she was the manager of the Public Motel in Kendallville and ran the lunch counter at Fischer’s Pharmacy in Kendallville. She was born May 31, 1920, in Kendallville to George and Ruby (Bower) Schlichtenmyer. On November 15, 1945, in South Bend she married Robert H. Rittermeyer. He died December 12, 1976. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jerry Krull of Winchester, Kentucky; a granddaughter, Krista (Chris) Collins of Winchester, Kentucky; 2 great-grandchildren, Megan Collins and Collins of Winchester, Kentucky; and a brother, Jack Schlichtenmyer of Salem, Indiana She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Robert, Richard and Max Schlichtenmyer. Ritz Jacob A, 90, resident of Sacred Heart Home in Avilla for the past five years, died there Sunday. Born in Fort Recovery, Ohio, he formerly resided in Fort Wayne and was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a retired boilermaker for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He and his wife Esther celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last June 17. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Spindler and Mrs. William Spohn, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Hubert Berning, Angola; two sons, Richard, Owosso, Mich., and Jerome, Washington D.C.; a brother, Edward, in Florida; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Rivir Eli was born in Lancaster County, Penn., April 12, 1845, and died at Long Beach, Calif. Sept. 22, 1938 at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 10 days. When he was 6 months old his parents came to Noble County with him and the rest of the family. At the age of 21 he married Juliann Hosler, and they had three daughters and three sons, Nellie Easterday of Seligman, Ariz., Vernon J. of Long Beach Cal., Nona May who died at the age of 4, Corvin J. of Huntington, Ind., Orvin H. of VanBuren, Ind., and Mabel I. Good of Indianapolis, Ind. He lived in Noble County with his family and was a member of Christian Chapel until he moved to Wabash County in 1898. In 1902 he moved to Marion, Ind. where he resided until the death of his wife in 1909 after which he lived in Michigan, in Fla. and for the last 20 years in Calif. He was a member of the Christian Church until his death. Funeral at Christian Chapel Sept. 28. Burial, Christian Chapel Cemetery. + 9-?-1938
Rivir John, who died at his home in Noble Twp Aug. 10, 1895, aged 86 years, 8 months and 9 days, was a native of Bedford County, Penn., born there on the first day of Jan. 1809. He married Nancy Stoner, a Penn. girl, native of Lancaster, born Oct. 26, 1810. They commenced their married life in their native state and remained there until 1845 when they came to Noble County with a family of children, the youngest of whom was an infant of a few months. They had $18 to start with, 6 young children to support and no land of their own. In 1861 at the age of 52 he was thrown from a wagon and received injuries that crippled him for life. Prior to the accident he had sold his Green Twp farm and was about to remove to Kansas, but the breaking out of the War of the Rebellion changed his plans and he purchased the farm in Noble Twp where he died. Three of his sons, John, Jacob and David, lost their lives in the War, John starving to death in Libby Prison. + Clippings book
Roark Rebecca, 85, died today at the Elmer Terry residence. She was born February 6, 1906 in Emmalena, Ky., to Henry and Mary (Smith) Short. In 1923 in Hazard, Ky., she married William Roark, who died March 28, 1960. She moved to Kendallville 20 years ago and was a member of Full Gospel Revival Center in Rome City. Surviving are 2 daughters, Ilda Terry of Kendallville, and Dale Messer of Brimfield; a son, Ed Roark of Richmond, Ky.; 2 sisters, Martha Jacobs and Ellen Short of Rome City; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
