Reece Synthia Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reece of Elkhart, was born Sept. 18, 1900 and died May 19, 1907. Funeral at the residence. Burial, Wolf Lake Cemetery. * No date
Reed Allen, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Reed of Ligonier, was murdered Friday night in California. He was born in Ligonier July 10, 1930 and graduated from Ligonier High School in 1946. Five months later he enlisted in the Air Force. He had served 18 months in Newfoundland and had returned to the States in March 1949 and was on furlough from Nov. 15 to 20. Surviving are the parents; 2 brothers, Robert and Dale, both at home; and a sister, Frances at Nashville, Tenn. + 1950
Reed Amelia L, 85, of Kendallville, died April 7, 2006 at her home. She was a dental assistant for Dr. Edgar Miller in Kendallville and a member of Trinity Church United Methodist and a past member of OES. She was born March 27, 1921 in LaGrange County to Robert Wesley and Mabel E. (Wagner) Fair. She graduated from Mongo High School and married John A. Reed on June 29, 1942 in Mongo. He died Feb. 13, 1993. She is survived by 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Sue of Rome City and Mike of Elkhart; 4 grandchildren, Carri Aungst, Michael, Jeff and Melissa Reed; 5 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Emily and Olivia Aungst, Isabelle and Ava Reed; and a brother, Glen Fair of Madison. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Fair; and a sister, Irene Fair. Services Monday at Young Family Funeral Home. Burial, Lake View Cemetery. ^ 4-8-2006
Reed Ann M (Cramer) was born near Harpers Ferry, Va. June 10, 1834 and died in Fulton, Ill. March 12, 1907, aged 72 years 9 months and 28 days. At the age of 4 she with her parents moved to Miami County, Ohio and where November 12, 1857 she married L. N. Reed of Montgomery Co., Ohio, where they resided one year. They moved to Indiana one year later and settled in Kendallville where they lived until 1885. Broken in health, they moved to Yates Center, Kansas where they lived 4 years, then to Tracy, Iowa and in 1890 to Lyons, Iowa. She was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom preceded her in their infancy. She is survived by her husband and a son in the far west, one brother. Burial, Clarence, Iowa. ^ 4-11-1907
Reed Betty Jean, 62, Elkhart, formerly of Cromwell, died Friday in Elkhart General Hospital. She was born Oct. 8, 1924 in Brimfield to William and Juanita (Beckner) Grimes and was employed at Cromwell Manufacturing. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Lawson) Emrick, Irving, Texas; 4 sisters, Dora Kelly, Elkhart, Helen Ley, Kendallville, Nell Hipshire and Norma Staggs of Cromwell; one brother, Raymond of Albion; 3 grandchildren, Dean Terman, Dave Jr. and Steve Emrick. Reed Cecil, 77, widow of Edward Reed and grandmother of Mrs. Gerald Winebrenner and Mrs. Robert Brumbaugh, Route 2, Albion, died Monday in Memorial Hospital in Columbia City. Surviving in addition to the granddaughters are two stepchildren, three great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and a half-sister. Services will be this afternoon in Columbia City. Reed Charles W, 94, a lifetime resident of Noble County, died at his home on R. 2, Ligonier, May 26, 1965. He was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church at Cromwell and was a former trustee of York Twp. His wife, Ida (Secrist) and a son, Paul, preceded him in death. Immediate survivors are a son, Hugh of R. 2, Ligonier; a daughter, Mrs. Theo (Lenore) Peterson, R. 2, Ligonier; 3 grandchildren, Roger, Allen and Jane Peterson; and 4 great-grandchildren. Reed Clarence O, 66, 721 N. Cavin St., was dead on arrival Tuesday of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born March 21, 1906 in Noble County, the son of Dennis and Esther (Oliver) Reed and was married Dec. 21, 1926 to Ruby Irene Rodman. He was a resident of the Ligonier community 32 years and was retired from Penn Controls. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Rosenogle, Kimmell; 3 sons, Donald, Ligonier, Wayne, Kimmell, and Ross (Butch) stationed with the army in Germany; a sister, Mrs. Ora Shambaugh, Butler; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Reed Dale E, 65, died Monday in his Albion residence. He was born March 22, 1927 at Wolf Lake to Herschel and Marie (Howenstein) Reed. A lifetime area resident, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II; a 1939 graduate of Walkerton High School; and was employed by Penn Controls in Goshen. He was a member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749 and American Legion Post 240 in Avilla. Surviving are 3 daughters, Dawnice Alexander of Elgin, Ill., Shawn Berchiatti of Shipshewana, and Sharon Henson of Albion; a son, Larry of Ligonier; a sister; and 6 grandchildren. Reed Dani G, 65, died November 7, 2005 at her Elkhart residence. She was born March 17, 1940 in Mousie, KY. to Virgil and Ellen (Green) Wicker. Surviving are her husband, Mike; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Doug Gunsaullus of Corunna, Susan and Randy Smith of Kendallville, Sally and Tom Nuell of Fort Wayne, and Jonea and Jeff Douglas of Ossian; 2 stepchildren; 9 grandchildren; one brother, Virgil G. "Bud" and Linda Wicker of Kendallville; and one sister, Racine and Bill Smith of Albion. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Buford, Coburn, Morton and Marvin Wicker. Reed Donald R, 79, of Ligonier, died Dec. 21, 2006 at Avalon Village nursing home in Ligonier. He was a self-employed appliance repairman, retiring in 2001. A Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the Ligonier Church of Christ and the 101 Club. On Aug. 28, 1946 he married Naola L. Kimmel in Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Sheri of Columbus, Ind.; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and Mike Vosteen of Ligonier and Loretta Funk of Savannah, Ga.; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Rosenogle of Ligonier; 2 brothers and their wives, Wayne and Shirley of Kimmell and Ross and Liz of Elizabethtown, Ky. Reed Eliza, 84, a resident of Kendallville for the past 57 years, died at her home there Thursday. Born in Pa., she came to Kendallville shortly after the Civil War and has resided in the same home until her death. Surviving are 3 sons, Ira, Tom and John, all of that place; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Sarah Hulburt of Kendallville, and Mrs. Emma Flucky of Little Rock, Ark. Funeral Saturday. + 8-?-1924
Reed Eliza (Iddings) was born in Summit County, Ohio Jan. 4, 1812. She was married to Ryland Reed, who preceded her in death in 1834, and came to Noble County in 1836, settling on a farm just south of this city, where she lived until about the first of last July, at which time she went to Los Angeles, Calif. with her daughter and son-in-law and remained there until her death which occurred on Jan. 4 (her birthday). Her remains were brought to this place and buried in the family burying ground on the farm before mentioned. Funeral took place on Jan. 14 at the residence of her brother, Captain Hiram Iddings. She was the mother of 2 children, one son, Henry, who died several years ago from disease contracted in the U. S. Army service, and one daughter, Mrs. E. H. Bundy. ^ 1-20-1888
Reed Elmer L, 55, R. 1, died in Goshen Hospital. Born in Albion Feb. 8, 1922, he was the son of James and Maggie (Russell) Reed. He married Elizabeth Webster Cullen March 13, 1971 in North Miami, Fla., moving to this area from Fla. in 1973. He was a contract painter and a veteran of WW II. He is survived by his wife; 3 stepsons, Larry D. and Jerry D. Lagrone of Beltsville, Md., and James R. Lagrone, Brooksville, Md.; 5 grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Fred, Leo, and Jessie, Fort Wayne. Reed Esther Caroline, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Oliver, was born April 9, 1878 in Noble County, and died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Garrett Dec. 9, 1921 at the age of 43 years and 8 months. She married to Dennis E. Reed Dec. 11, 1898 and they had 2 children, one daughter, Pearley M., and one son, Clarence O. She leaves also her parents; 4 sisters, Mrs. Emma Randall of Wawaka, Mrs. Mabel Enos of Albion, Mrs. Alma Wade of Battle Creek, Mich., and Mrs. Lena Gaff of Albion; one brother, Reuben. Two brothers preceded her in death. She was baptized June 11, 1899 and united with the Burr Oak Baptist Church where funeral was held Monday. Burial, Christian Chapel Cemetery. + 12-?-1921
Reed Floren D "Ike", 71, of Loda and formerly of Kendallville, died Tuesday in Danville, Ill. He was born April 18, 1906, and on July 26, 1942 married Elisabeth Russell. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters; one son, one brother; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday in Church of Christ, Paxton, Ill. Reed Frank L, 69, a retired mail carrier, died Tuesday on arrival at the emergency room of McCray Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his trailer home in Ind. 3 south of Kendallville. His service as the mail carrier dated back to August 1936. He retired in December 1954. He also worked as a watch repairman. He was born July 23, 1891 in Churubusco, a son of William and Laura Reed, and had lived in Kendallville and vicinity 3 years, coming here from Churubusco. He was a WW I veteran and a member of Kendallville Post 86, American Legion, of which he was a past commander. Surviving are the widow, the former Jessie Campbell, to whom he was married in 1920; a son, Frank L. Jr. of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Mrs. Maynard Evers at whose home Mr. and Mrs. Reed resided, and Mrs. Marion Halferty of Albion; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. C. O. Smith of Churubusco and a brother, Royal Lester Reed of South Bend. Two sisters preceded him in death. Services Friday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home in Kendallville. Reed Frank L, 81, died Feb. 18, 2002 at Beverly Health Manor, Laguna Hills, Calif. A retired postal clerk, he worked for 25 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he earned 2 stars in the first Battle of Germany in WW II. He was born in Kendallville in 1920 to Frank and Jessie Reed and graduated from Kendallville High School in 1937. He married Gloria F. Reed. She died in 1965. Surviving are 2 sons, Dennis and Tim of Washington Terrace, Utah; 3 daughters (only 2 mentioned), Judy Kemp of Fort Wayne, Gloria Reed of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; 2 sisters, Connie Evers of Kendallville and Nancy Halferty of Albion; 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Reed Gloria, 41, an Avilla native, died Thursday in Parkview Hospital. The former Gloria Eichman, she lived in Avilla with her parents on Main St. before the family moved 30 years ago. She was married to Frank L. Reed, Jr., a former resident of Kendallville, and son of Mrs. Jessie Reed of that city. Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Judy Kemp of Fort Wayne, Joan and Jean, at home; two sons, Timothy, at home, and Dennis, stationed with the Marine Corps in Yuma, Ariz.; three brothers and four sisters. Reed Harold Clinton, 16-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Reed, died at the home of his parents near Wolf Lake, Friday from diphtheria. He is survived by his parents and two brothers. Graveside services were held at Stringtown Cemetery Saturday . + 6-?-1932
Reed Harry A, Big Lake, north of Columbia City, died last Tuesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Feb. 16, 1913 in Columbia City, the son of Raymond and Dica (Ott) Reed. He married Thelma Paulus. He was employed by Weatherhead Co. and was a member of Pioneer Club, Big Lake Volunteer Fire Dept., United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and OES. Survivors include the wife; 2 daughters, Rita, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Paula Ridings, Palmetto Point, Fla.; 3 sons, Roger, Fort Wayne, Richard, Pennallis Park, Fla., and Thomas, Harper Lake, Cromwell; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Boyer, Columbia City; 2 brothers, Roy, Raleigh, N.C., and Max, Columbia City; 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Reed Harry E, 86, died Tuesday in his Albion home. He was born January 25, 1913 in Merriam to James D. and Ella R. (Grimes) Reed. On November 4, 1972 in Albion he married Bernice (Keister) Cooper. She died October 22, 1998. A lifetime Noble County resident, he was groundskeeper for Wolf Lake Cemetery for 27 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and a member of American Legion Post 246. Reed Henry D, the aged veteran who was struck by a Lake Shore train No. 10 Friday, died at his home. The injury was accidental and no one was held to blame. He was born in Stark County, O. 79 years ago. He was a member of the 53rd Indiana regiment and has a splendid war record. Reed James D, 76, a retired General Electric Co. employee and a resident of the Wolf Lake community most of his life, died June 12, 1958 at his home in Wolf Lake. Reed Jessie P, 87, of Kendallville, died Tuesday at McCray Hospital. She was born in Kendallville Feb. 6, 1898 to Romine and Geneva (Adams) Campbell. On March 3, 1920 she married Frank L. Reed, who died in May 1961. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kendallville and Eagles Auxiliary in Albion. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Marion (Nancy) Halferty of Albion; and Connie Evers of Kendallville; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Reed John M, Washington Twp, died Friday from apoplexy. He was born March 11, 1858 and at the time of his death was 75 years, 6 months and 18 days old. He had spent most of his life in the community where he was born. Surviving are the widow; 6 children, Ray of Columbia City, Mrs. Kate Kolsom, Chesterland, O., Mrs. Ethel Fuller, Canton, Ill., Victor and Thurlow, Toledo, O., and Mrs. Leah Kiester, Kimmell; a brother, Perry of Ligonier and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Clark of Saginaw, Mich. Reed John Prett, 57, for the last 20 years a monologue artist on the vaudeville stage, died last Monday at his home in Kendallville. He was born in Cromwell Oct. 16, 1871, a son of George W. Reed. When 18 years of age he felt the lure of the stage and for many years was a prominent figure in leading vaudeville circuits. He married Alpha Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Perkins of South Milford, who survives. Twenty years ago they established their home at Kendallville and 8 years ago he retired from the stage. + 12-?-1928
Reed Joseph C "Joe", 85, a native of this community, died Monday at the Noble County Home at Albion. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He was born Sept. 26, 1869 and was a railroader until his retirement a number of years ago. He had lived in Cromwell until about 6 months ago when he went to Ligonier to make his home. About a month or two ago he entered the County Home. Surviving are 6 nephews, Dr. Vern Stockberger of Milford, George Miles of Rhinelander, Wis., Don Miles of Lansing, Mich., Everett E. Miles, Earl O’Hearn and Roy Raby of Fort Wayne; and 3 nieces, Mrs. Rudolph Robinson of Wheaton, Ill., Mrs. George Gardner and Mrs. Beulah Long of Fort Wayne. Funeral today from L. H. Reed Kathryn V, 92, of Ligonier, died Oct. 5, 2012, at Avalon Village. She was born on Feb. 21, 1920, in Noble County to James and Viola (Holden) Patton. She married Robert Reed on July 3, 1937, in Albion. He preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy K. Hooley of Ligonier; granddaughters, Lisa Gray of Findley, Ohio and Kimberlee Hooley of Ligonier; and a brother, Russell Patton of Ligonier. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Gingerich, a sister, Elizabeth Juday, and 4 brothers: Sam Sr., Edward, James and Robert Patton.  She was employed in several area factories, such as Wirk Garment Factory, Essex Wire and Tower Advertising. Reed Lillie A, 81, died Oct. 21 in the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne after suffering hip and shoulder fractures in a fall in her home at the top of Stone’s Hill north of Cromwell. She was born Sept. 11, 1876 in Kosciusko County and had resided in this area all her life. She was a member of the Sparta Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Slagle, at home; a grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Miller, Columbia City. Her husband, Samuel, died in 1934. Reed Mary, 91, a former Albion resident, died July 13. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Mildred) Guild, Elk Rapids, Mich.; and 2 grandchildren. Reed Mary R, consort of Lt. Henry A. Reed, was born in Batavia, Genesee County, N.Y., March 5, 1841, and died at the residence of Capt. Hiram Iddings one mile south of the city July 3, aged 44 years, 2 months 28 days. She was married in 1862 and lived with her husband until his death in 1873. She was the mother of 2 boys, both of whom survive. The funeral was at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Hiram Iddings. ^ 7-10-1885
Reed Michael B, 30, died October 22, 2000 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born March 11, 1970 in Huntington, W.Va. to Gary and Sandra (Meade) Reed. He was a member of the Cromwell Lutheran Church and worked at TTP in Warsaw. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne; and ex-wife, Susan Reed; both of Cromwell; his mother and stepfather, Garland and Sandra Acord of Ligonier; his father of W.Va.; uncles and aunts and cousins. Reed Milton Hugh, 71, R. 2, died Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Theodore Petersen from lung cancer. He was born in Cromwell March 4, 1902, a son of Charles and Ida (Secrist) Reed and was a retired farmer. He lived most of the time in the area. Reed N Bernice Cooper, 82, died Oct. 22 in Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. She was born July 25, 1916 in Merriam to Albert and Gertrude (Addis) Keister. She first married Leonard Cooper, who died in 1963. On Nov. 4, 1972 in Albion she married Harry Reed. She was an assembler for Lyall Electric from 1955 to 1981. She was a member of Albion Wesleyan Church and the Albion Eagles. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Donna Snyder of Albion and Barbara Hovarter of Corunna; 2 sons, Larry Cooper of Albion and Wayne Cooper of Stroh; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Keister of Albion; and 2 brothers, Nelson and Robert Keister of Columbia City. Reed Naola L, 84, died October 29, 2012, at The Maples of Waterford in Goshen. She was born on March 22, 1928, in Green County, Iowa, to Don and Lora (Hypes) Kimmel. She had three siblings, Nada Headrick, Gwan Kimmel and Gerald Kimmel, all who preceed her in death.In August of 1946 she married Donald R. Reed. He died on December 21, 2006. Three children were born to Naola and Don, Donna Reed Hanshaw Vosteen who died in 2007, Loretta Reed Parsons Funk of Savannah, Georgia, and Alan Reed of Columbus, Indiana. Four grandchildren, Eric Hanshaw, Crystal Schoonover, Mallory Reed, and Coleman Reed. Four great-grandchildren, Jordan Helton, Tanner Helton, Zoe and Alexis Hanshaw. Reed Nellie (Bartley), widow of Peter A. Reed, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hossinger, in Cromwell on Dec. 3. She was a native and lifelong resident of Noble County, her early life being in the Albion area and also near Burr Oak. The pioneer Bartley farm, of which Bartley Lake, at Port Mitchell is a part, was so named after her father, and here her girlhood days were passed. Prior to her husband’s death, together they operated the general store at Lisbon. Surviving are three sons, Walter of Bronson, Mich., Frank of Churubusco, and Denny of LaOtto; 2 daughters, Mrs. Asa D. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1946 and married Jack Reed on August 24, 1947 near Kendallville. She was a bookkeeper and employed with Parker Nivens Chevrolet in Kendallville for 18 years. She also assisted Ron Everage when he began Everage Motor Sales in Stroh. She was a member of the Wayne Center United Methodist Church. Reed Ralph Curtis, 28, committed suicide April 26 with carbon monoxide gas at his home in Noble Twp, R. 4, Albion. He was an electric welder at S. F. Bowser & Co. at Fort Wayne. He was employed as a munitions worker. His draft classification recently had been changed from 3-B to 1A. Reed Ryland, a native of Windsor County, Vermont where he was born Jan. 28, 1811, went with his parents to Ohio’s Western Reserve where he later married Miss Eliza Iddings April 8, 1835. They were among Noble County’s early settlers, locating here Sept. 10, 1836. Her brothers, Jackson, Hiram and Lewis Iddings, are still with us. He had a farm in Allen Twp about a mile south of Kendallville. He died of catarrhal pneumonia March 20, 1884. He was buried beside the remains of his son, Lt. Henry A. Reed Telia, 68, wife of Albert Reed, died Monday at her home, 634 N. Main St. Ptomaine poisoning from eating minced ham caused her sudden death. Friday evening she ate some of the tainted meat but did not feel any ill effects until Saturday afternoon when she became suddenly stricken. Reed Thomas M, 54y5m8d, one of 6 children born to John and Margaret Reed, was a native of Guernsey County, Ohio. He was born Aug. 1, 1858 and died Jan. 10, 1913. At the age of 6 he came with his parents to Albion, where they lived for 2 years, after which they moved to the farm in York Twp 2 miles west of this city. He received his education in the public schools of York Twp and the normal school in Albion. For 14 years he was a teacher. He served 4 years as trustee of York Twp. He was employed in the county treasurer and auditors’ offices until Feb. 1904, at which time he became a cashier of the Farmer’s State Bank. He was a stockholder, secretary and treasurer of the Noble County Telephone Co., and upon the recent death of Dr. Reiff he was chosen by the Albion Town Board of Trustees as a member of the Albion School Board. He was a member of North Star Lodge, NO. 380, I.O.O.F. Albion Lodge No. 223, K. of P’s and Albion Lodge, No. 97, F and A. M. In 1890 he married Mary Griffin of Brimfield, Ind. They had a daughter, Mildred, and acted as parents to Ruth Griffin. He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, 3 sisters, Mrs. Charles Kelsy of Martin, Mich., Mrs. Jeremiah and William Noe of Kimmell. Rees John, about 70, was found dead in his room at Ligonier Merchants. It is presumed he died of a heart attack. He was last seen alive by friends Saturday. Reese David L, son of Jacob and Nancy Reese, was born in Noble County Oct. 11, 1853, and died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. John F. Reese, in Ligonier, Dec. 3, 1914, aged 61 years, 1 month and 22 days. He came to Ligonier less than a week before his death. He grew to manhood in Noble County, where he worked at several trades until he was 36 years old, when he entered the ministry and gave the remaining 25 years of his life to this high calling. He married Margaret Blackburn Jan. 21, 1881. She died Aug. 9, 1914. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias of Flushing, Mich. Survivors include one brother, Jacob N. Reese Ralph D, 70, R. 2, Albion, was found dead by a customer who spotted him at the Clouse Produce Stand south of Albion Tuesday (d. 4-22-1980). He came to Albion in 1943 to be manager of the Kroger store. Later he purchased the Sweet Shoppe, which he operated for many years. He was later produce manager at a local supermarket. He had his own produce stand on the premises of the Dairy Inn for several seasons. He was born Feb. 15, 1910 in Fulton County to Fred and Clara Mutchler Reese. He was born April 11, 1900 at Streator, Ill. to Charles and Emma (Nickerson) Reeve, and was a lifetime resident of the Cromwell area. In 1922 he married Ruth Stark. A retired farmer and electrician, he was a member of the Broadway Christian Church southeast of Cromwell and was a past member of the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by the widow; 2 sons, Phillip, New Paris, and Allen of Pierceton; 2 sisters, Mrs. Harold Bitner, Ligonier, and Mrs. Dale Gorsuch, Kimmell; a brother, Charles, Kimmell; and 2 grandchildren. Reeve Emma A, 85, died last Thursday at the Mock Nursing Home in Wilmot. She was born in Ill. Jan. 20, 1873, the daughter of Chauncey and Mary (Trunnel) Nickerson, and she married Charles L. Rehwinkel Rudolph J, 90, former Kendallville mayor and civic leader who was named Outstanding Citizen of 1977 by the Chamber of Commerce, died Wednesday in McCray Hospital. He was a retired vice president of McCray Refrigeration where he was employed for 45 years, first as a mail boy. A native of Burnet, Wis., he was born July 4, 1889, the son of Rev. William and Henrietta (Zerniko). On Dec. 26, 1909 he married Edith Grabowsky. She died in 1952. Their only son, William, was killed in WW II. A daughter, Beulah Lash, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Johanna Wills, Lutheran Home; 3 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In 1959 at the age of 70, he was elected mayor on the Republican Ticket, defeating incumbent Democrat Andrew M. Milnar and serving 1960-1963. Rehwinkel William A (PFC), 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph J. Rehwinkel, Kendallville, was killed in action in Belgium Jan. 4. His death was the first casualty to be reported in Noble County in 1945. He enlisted in the army in Sept. 1942 while a student at Valparaiso University. He was slightly wounded in action somewhere in France in Sept. but returned to his position an hour later as second gunner on a large anti-tank gun. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries. He was born Sept. 24, 1920 in Kendallville, the son of Rudolph and Edith Rehwinkel. He graduated from the local high school with the class of 1938 and later entered Concordia College, Fort Wayne. Reichard Henry L, 87, died Monday at his residence, 1132 Summit Street in Fort Wayne. He was a native of Gar Creek, but moved to Fort Wayne when a young man. He served on the police force in Fort Wayne for fifteen years, from 1899 to 1914. He then was associated with the George DeWald Dry Goods Company for 24 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Olive Club. Survivors include his wife, Matilda, and one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Steele of Fort Wayne. Reichard Karl, 45, city mail carrier and resident of this community died this morning at his home, 924 E. Mitchell St. following a heart attack. He was born Aug. 22, 1889 on a farm west of Kendallville, the son of Emma and the late Henry Reichard. He was 6 years old when his parents moved to this city. He was united in marriage July 23, 1913 with Minnie Hess, and to this union 2 sons were born, one preceding his father in death. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Reichard Neil R, 74, of Wawaka, died March 28, 2002 following a traffic accident on U.S. 6. He was born Oct. 31, 1927 in Kendallville to Harold and Hilda (Bowman) Reichard. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and was then employed as a forklift operator with Dana Corp. in Fort Wayne for 27 years. Most recently he had been a driver for the Amish community. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Wawaka United Methodist Church and West Noble American Legion. He was preceded in death by 2 wives, Joan Wisniewski and Wahneta Moore; and 2 sisters, Shirley Nicodemus and Evelyn Letich. Reichart Roy J, 69, of Kendallville, died Monday in DeKalb Hospital. He was born in Wausau, Wis., Nov. 28, 1916 to John and Ida (Bach) Reichart. On Aug. 14, 1943 in Kendallville, he married Mary Jane Jones, who died in 1982. An insurance agent for many years, he managed the Reichart Insurance Co. 1982-1984. She was also the Secretary/Treasurer of the Sylvan Lake Improvement Association, and a member of Rome City American Legion Post 381 Auxiliary and Kendallville VFW Post 2749 Auxiliary. She was a past member of the East Noble School Corporation Board of Trustees and a past chairman of the Republican Party in Kendallville. She was born February 22, 1947, in Kendallville to Clarence and Edythe (Franze) Nartker. On June 9, 1964, in Lakewood, New Jersey, she married James H. Reick. Reid Chester A, 87, died Feb. 8, 2001 at Oak Leaf Village. He was born Oct. 26, 1913 in Kendallville to Homer L. and Ella M. (Haas) Reid. On April 21, 1935 in Kendallville he married Irene Shultz. He started out working for Stork Oil Co. In 1939 he bought a business in Ligonier that repaired farm machinery. In 1964 he expanded his business to U. S. 6 and started Chet Reid's Car Parts and Reid's Lawnmower and was in business in Ligonier for 57 years. Reidenbach Jack E, 89, of Wawaka, died October 16, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born in Elkhart Twp, Noble County, on December 29, 1921 to Edward and Opha (Russell) Reidenbach. He graduated from Wawaka High School in 1940 and attended Indiana Central College for a short time. He was married to Mary Miller on October 8, 1944 in Cromwell. She died November 1, 2007. He was a farmer all of his life. He was elected to the office of Noble County auditor and Noble County recorder over a span of 12 years. He also served as the Elkhart Township trustee for about 8 years and as a Noble County Councilman. Reidenbach John was born June 3, 1857 in Elkhart Twp on the old homestead, his parents, Philipp and Katharina Reidenbach. He was one of 9 children, all of whom have preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. John Koch of South Bend. He lived to a fine old age, 75 years, 11 months and 4 days. Early in life he connected himself with the German M. E. Church in Wawaka. In the year 1882 he married Emma Munk. She died after about one year of married life. He married Louisa Smith and they had 6 children, George, who is living with his mother, Mrs. R. E. Reidenbach Mary Kathryn, 84, died Nov. 1, 2007 after being struck by a vehicle while walking in her neighborhood at her winter home in Tavares, Fla. A Cromwell High School graduate of 1941, she was a member of Wawaka Church of the Brethren. She had worked for her parents at Laur's Restaurant in Ligonier and at Uniform Printing in Kendallville. Reidenbach Phillip, youngest son of Philipp and Katharina Reidenbach, was born Nov. 20, 1859, spent his entire life on the farm where he died Feb. 7, 1930 at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 18 days. He married Rose E. Munk Nov. 13, 1883. They had 6 children, Edward living near home, Elmer of Morocco, Carl of Chicago, Ill., Dale and Vera of Whittier, Calif., and Maurice at home. When a young man he united with the German Methodist Church at Wawaka. After their marriage his wife, being a member of the Evangelical Church at Kendallville, wishing to rear their family in the church, they decided to unite with the U. B. Church at Brimfield. One son, Elmer is engaged in the ministry. Surviving are the widow, 5 sons and one daughter; 11 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. John Koch of South Bend, and Mrs. Fred Koch of Saginaw, Mich.; one brother, John of near Wawaka. Funeral at the U. Reidenbach William A, 66, lifelong resident of the Brimfield community and lumberman, died from an attack of acute indigestion at his home in Brimfield Thursday. He was affiliated with E. G. Schermerhorn in the lumber business. He was formerly identified with the Odd Fellows and was a member of the U. B. Church there. About 10 years ago, his wife, the former Lizzie Stewart, met a tragic death when she was burned to death while canning fruit. He later married Mary Moore of Rome City. She was married on March 20, 1892 to August Reinke, who preceded her in death. She leaves her son, Elmer, father and three brothers, Charles, Ernest and William. He was elected president of the Indiana Hardware Dealer’s Association in 1931 and later served as a director. He was a member of the Evangelical Church. Reinoehl Rebecca (Weirich) was born in Lebanon County, Pa., Aug. 9, 1812. About 1831 her parents emigrated to the then far west, locating in Stark County, O., where she was married to David Reinoehl. He died in Feb. 1869. They had 7 children. Five are yet living, with 33 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In 1853 she with her family came to Indiana and settled in Fairfield Twp, DeKalb County on the old homestead where her son Solomon lives. She joined the Ev. Association in 1842. She was born March 23, 1923, in Columbus, Nebraska, to James P. and Edna R. (Wright) Ross. On June 15, 1943, in Lincoln, Nebraska, she married William S. Reiske. He died January 12, 2000. Reith Floyd L, 97, died Friday in Kendallville Manor HealthCare Center. He was born in Goshen January 25, 1895 to Rufus and Ida (Rathka) Reith. On October 8, 1916 in Kendallville he married Estella F. Bertsch. She died April 2, 1979. He had worked at McCray Refrigeration for 30 years and was the oldest member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Richard (Betty) Moore of Winchester, and Helen Mountz of Kendallville; a son, Floyd of Kendallville; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Reith Rufus, 64, painting contractor and resident of Kendallville, died at his home there Saturday from cancer. Funeral was Monday from the home and from Evangelical Church. Remke Frank J, 81, died Sept. 17 at the Veterans Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had lived in Wawaka 16 years moving there from Avilla. He was born April 29, 1896 in Tennessee, was a retired farmer and had worked for Hubbard Spool in Garrett and Wayne Knitting Mills. He was a veteran of WW I and a life member of Avilla American Legion, a member of the Kendallville VFW and the Last Man’s Club. He married Vera Reidenbach Jan. 7, 1961 and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Mr. John Dennison, Fort Wayne; two sons, Bob, Fort Wayne, and Jim, LaOtto; one stepson, Jack Edmonds, Wawaka; one stepdaughter, Arleen Hyde, Greenfield, Ind.; one brother Joe, Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. Remke James T, 65, died Sunday at his LaOtto residence from cancer. He was born in Fort Wayne April 19, 1929 to Frank and Etheldreeda (Freinstein) Remke. On June 24, 1950 in Avilla he married Lois F. Traxler. He was a tool grinder and foreman for International Harvester in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avilla. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Roxann Holiday of Kendallville; 5 sons, James of Evansville, Tom and Steve of Kendallville, Ron of Auburn, and Bryan of Cincinnati; 7 grandchildren; and a great-aunt, Georgia Kallmyer of Fort Wayne. Remke James T “Bud”, 87, died Dec. 28, 2011 from injuries suffered in a fall. On May 3, 1952, he married Retha Fischer. Born Nov. 1, 1924, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., to Andrew and Alma (Kraus) Remke, he worked at International Harvester for 32 years until his retirement in 1981. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Diane (Mike) Mapes of Auburn; sons, Roger (Diane) Remke of Wheaton, Ill., Charles Remke (Sharon Schamberg) of Fort Wayne and Glenn (Julie) Remke of Fernley, Nev.; his grandchildren, Erin (Jeff) Sako, Angela (Shane) Turner, Andrew Mapes (Rikki Salyers), Rachel Remke and Jessica Remke, Cortney (Tyler) Gardiner, Erica Remke, Taylor Remke, Nick Remke, and Elizabeth Schamberg; a great-granddaughter, Riley Gardiner, and a brother and sister, Clarence (Anna Bell) Remke and Nellie Remke of Lawrenceburg. Remke Vera, 88, R. 1, Wawaka, died Jan. 28 in Hancock County Hospital, Greenfield. She had lived in the Wawaka area until three and one-half years ago, when she went to live with her daughter. She was born in Wawaka March 13, 1899, the daughter of Philip and Rose (Munk) Reidenbach. She married Cleland J. Edmonds in May 1915 in Albion and he died Aug. 30, 1956. She married Frank Remke Jan. 7, 1961, and he died Sept. 17, 1976. She was a nurses’ aide at McCray Hospital and a member of the Brimfield United Methodist Church, Busy Bees Extension Club, Noble County Choir and Hilltoppers of Greenfield. Surviving are a daughter, Arleen Hyde of Greenfield; a son Jack H. Edmonds of Wawaka; a stepdaughter, Ursula Dennison of Fort Wayne; two stepsons, James Remke of LaOtto and Robert Remke of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Remley Ruth Armadene Zollars, 71, of Albion, died Nov. 8, 2004 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She had retired from Starcraft in Topeka and had also worked at Frick Services in Wawaka. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and Albion OES. She was born Aug. 12, 1933 in Marion County to Armond and Ruth (Morphew) Greeson. on Feb. 14, 1992 in Asbury Church she married Donald Remley. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Deb Zollars of Ligonier and Bill and Kathy Zollars of Convoy, Ohio; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah Killian of Columbia City and Beth and Wayne Lewis of Wolcottville; 3 stepchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Jim Clendening of New Ross, Ind.; a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Sandy Greeson of Haines City, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
