Piatt Elizabeth, who lives ½ mile northwest of Springfield, died Saturday and was buried Tuesday. ^ 4-14-1881
Pickard Frank, 85, died June 24, 2007 in Miller's Merry Manor nursing home at Garrett. He was born April 4, 1922 in Roanoke to C. Frank and Onda (Markins) Pickard. On Oct. 5, 1943 in Avilla he married Bessie Cooley. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Rev. Richard and Marion of Garrett; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Harry Cogan of Cedar, Mich.; 5 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin. He had owned and operated Frank's Garage in rural Auburn since 1954 and was a mechanic for Garrett-Keyser-Butler school buses for 40 years. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WW II, he was a member of Corunna Community Church, Garrett American Legion Post 178 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 43. Pickard Jennifer, 35, died March 16, 2012, at her home in Kendallville. She was a member of Ark of Avilla. She was born Jan. 16, 1977, in Auburn. Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Vicky and Phillip Temple of Cadiz, Ky; father, Marion Pickard of Garrett; son, Devin Belcher of Auburn; 2 sisters, Roxanne Garrison of Auburn and Onda Dalton of Angola; a stepsister, and her grandmother, Bessie Pickard of Garrett. Pickard Washington, 90, father of Mrs. Florence DeWitt of R. 1, died Monday in the Souder Hospital in Auburn. Surviving are four sons, one other daughter and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services Wednesday in the Dilgard and Cline Funeral Home. ~ 5-3-1956
Pickell Raymond A, 68, of Albion, died May 8, 2008 in Brookville, Fla. He was the former Albion postmaster. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a member of the National Association of Retired Postmasters. He was born Sept. 2, 1939 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Louis and Rose (Marchitello) Fischetti. He married Barbara Ann Smith on May 19, 1962. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Denise Gwaltney of Fischers and Jackie and Steve Bushong of Albion; 2 brothers, Daniel and Pat Pickell of Snow Camp, N.C., and Kenneth Pickell of Granger; a sister, Ethel Johnson of Angier; and 6 grandchildren, Zachary, Joshua and Cassianne Gwaltney, Diana and Natalie Bushong, and Aaron Cooper. Pickering Clarence E, 91, died Tuesday at Medco Center. Born in Whiting, he had lived most of his life in Fort Wayne. He retired in 1955 from Deluxe Cab Co. where he had been a mechanic. He was a veteran of WW I. Surviving are 3 daughters, Lois Kimmel, Janet Till and Duetta Yoss, all of Fort Wayne; 3 sons, Eugene "Hank" Pickering of Wawaka, and Jim and David of Fort Wayne; a sister, Duetta Stroup of Alliance, Ohio; and 16 grandchildren. Pickering David, 51, of Fort Wayne, died Sunday in St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. A lifetime Fort Wayne resident, he was a floral designer and U. S. Army veteran. Pickers Norman W, 79, of Waterloo, died July 29 in Betz Nursing Home, Auburn. The Huntington County native worked for 21 ½ years at Newnam Foundry in Kendallville, managed Waterloo Lumber Co. for 12 years, and also farmed. Surviving are his wife, Doris; daughters Linda Colbert of Huntington and Carol Forbes of LaOtto; sons Donald of Zephyrhills, Fla., DeWayne of Medford, Ore., Phil of Kendallville, and Alvin of Waterloo; sisters, Freda Hoover of North Manchester, Sybil Sypolt of Ellenton, Fla., and Eilene Kindley of Marion; brothers, Ralph of Upland, Melvin of Sweetser and Marvin of Marion; 20 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Picking Ocie, 91, died today in Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center. She was born in Topeka on July 31, 1904 to Edward and Eva (Rodman) Caldwell. On September 3, 1980 in Mishawaka she married Coral Picking. She had worked for Uniroyal in Mishawaka and cared for 21 welfare children in her home over the years. Surviving are her husband; 4 stepdaughters; a stepson; a sister, Ruby VanDusen of Kendallville; nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Caldwell, and a sister, Neva Aman. Piedmont Eva, 96, died Saturday in Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. She was born in Merriam on May 6, 1899 to Robert and Augusta (Ramsey) Truman. She married Earl Shoda in 1915 and he died in 1927. In 1945 she married Anthony "Joe" Piedmont and he died in 1958. She moved to Blue Lake in 1945. Surviving are 2 daughters, Pauline Dorman of Fort Wayne, and Virginia Fletter of Naples, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Shoda of Churubusco; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons, Henry, Leroy and Thomas Shoda; 4 brothers, George, Floyd, Clifford and James Truman; and 4 sisters, Rosie Craig, Nell Cross, Clara Marschand and Fern Craig. Pieper Charles J, 83, San Mateo, Calif., died Sept. 9 at a nursing home in San Mateo. Born May 30, 1887 in Avilla, he was the son of William and Rosina (Vogeding) Pieper. He and his wife Clare were married November 17, 1938 in New York City. She died November 14, 1969. He had resided in New York and was a professor at New York University for 24 years before moving to California in 1969. He was a graduate of Wabash College, Crawfordsville, and received his M.A. degree in 1926 from Columbia University. He was a veteran of WW I. Surviving are one son, Peter, San Mateo, Calif.; one sister, Miss Lillie Pieper, Avilla; and two grandchildren. Three brothers, Henry, Frank and William, preceded him in death. Pieper Clare G, 61, New Rochelle, N. Y., died Nov. 14 at the New Rochelle Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1908, the daughter of James Lawrence and Elizabeth Clare Early Gerry. She was married to Charles J. Pieper at St. Patrick’s Church in New York in 1938. He survives with one son, Peter of San Francisco; and two grandsons, Peter Joseph and Todd James Pieper, both of Seattle, Wash. Pieper F Flavin, 65, of Toledo, Ohio died March 31. He was a native of Avilla, the son of Frank and Ida (Drerup) Pieper. He is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren, three sisters and a brother. Funeral April 3 at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. ~ 5-2-1968
Pieper Frank J, 73, died at Mercy Hospital, Toledo, Ohio, March 27. He was the son of William and Rosina Vogeding Pieper. He married Ida Mae Drerup. They planned to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on April 15. They had eight children. Twin sons died in infancy. Besides the widow, three sons and three daughters survive, Flavian F., Firnim, Carl E., Mrs. Geneva Dahm, Mrs. Velma McDowell, and Mrs. Shirley Daubman, all of Toledo. Two brothers and a sister also survive, Henry E. Pieper and Lillie R. Pieper, of Avilla, and Charles J. Pieper of New Rochelle, N. Y. He also had sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was engaged in farming in this vicinity until 1912. He then moved to Toledo where he became engaged in the hay, grain and feed business. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Toledo. Funeral March 31 with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio. ~ 4-3-1952
Pieper Henry Edward, 77, died of a heart attack Wednesday at his home just south of here. Survivors include one sister, Lillie, with whom he lived; and one brother, Charles. Services will be held Saturday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial, Catholic cemetery. Son of William and Rosina Vogeding Pieper, he was born May 28, 1875. In his early years he taught in various schools in the state, then in 1903 he pioneered in the government schools in the Philippines as teacher and supervisor for seven years. Returning to the United States, he taught in the west, then attended the University of Valparaiso, graduating in 1919. After several years in the schools in this area he took up farming and served in various capacities in the township and county. Survivors are a sister, Lillie, south of town; and a brother, Charles J., of New Rochelle, N. Y., and seven nieces and nephews. ~ 2-26 & 3-5-1953
Pieper Ida Mae, 71, died at her home at 639 Vinton Street in Toledo, Ohio, May 11. She was the daughter of Gerhard and Caroline Ruehart Drerup. On April 15, 1902 she was married to Frank J. Pieper, who preceded her in death on March 26. Survivors are six children: Flavian J., Firnim R., Carl A., Mrs. Geneva Dahm, Mrs. Velma McDowell and Mrs. Marvin Dauberman all of Toledo; sixteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Evers of Kendallville and Mrs. William Swartz of Auburn; and three brothers, Joseph of Coldwater, Mich., Gerhard of Corunna and Edward of Wabash, Ind. Last rites at St. Peters Catholic Church in Toledo, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery there. ~ 5-22-1952

Pierce Arthur C, 64, of Ligonier, died Friday at Goshen Hospital. He was born March 11, 1921 in Kimmell to Clifford and Virgie (Clay) Pierce. He was a resident of the Ligonier area his entire life and was employed by Essex Wire of Ligonier and Mogul Rubber of Goshen. He was a member of Goshen Moose Lodge. He was married to Pearl Putnam on Dec. 27, 1942. She and a daughter preceded him in death. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William (Patricia) Jacobs of Cromwell; and one son, Donald of Ligonier; 3 sisters, Mrs. William (Lillian) Davis, Champaign, Ill., Mrs. Christine Wilson, Gaylord, Mich., and Mrs. Perry (Edith) Redman, Columbia City; 4 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pierce Charles, 69, a Noble County native, died March 10 in Parkview Hospital. He lived most of his life in the Fort Wayne area and was the son of Mrs. Ella Housholder Pierce. He retired after 36 years service in automobile agency work at Poinsatte Motors three years ago. Surviving are his widow, Doris; three sons, Charles R., Grand Rapids, Mich., Byron G., Fort Wayne and James A., Garrett; one brother, Merritt W., Fort Wayne, and two sisters, Catharine Johnson, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Alice Potts, Lake Pleasant. Pierce Ella Louise, 70, died Monday following a stroke. She was born two and a half miles northwest of Avilla, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Housholder. She moved to Fort Wayne upon her marriage to Marley Pierce. He died in 1940. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. Pierce Elmer Clark, 80, died Tuesday in his Fort Wayne residence. He was born in Noble County on October 24, 1912 to Jay and Ella (Lamp) Pierce. He married Viola A. Schultz. A resident of Fort Wayne most of his life, he retired in 1978 after 20 years with the U. S. Postal Service, previously having worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 20 years. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Carol A. On Aug. 20, 1949 in Wolcottville, he married Patty Baird. He is retired from Monsanto in Ligonier and is a WW II veteran and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Margaret Pierce and Mrs. Ronald (Janet) Farmer of Kendallville; 2 sons, John T. Jr. of Linesville, Pa., and Steven of Covina, Calif.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Ora (Ruth) Worthington of Wolcottville, Laura Nason of Minneapolis, Minn., and Bertha Brown of LaGrange; 3 brothers, Lester of Wolcottville, Earl and Harold of Waco, Texas; and 5 grandchildren. She was a member of Kendallville American Legion Post 86 Auxiliary. She was born Sept. 4, 1950, in Kendallville to John and Patty L. (Baird) Pierce. Surviving are her mother; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet M. and Ron Farmer of Kendallville; 2 brothers and a sister-in-law, John Jr. and Twink Pierce of Rome City and Steven Pierce of Kendallville. Pierce Parley H was born in Applemanberg, Ind. on Dec. 4, 1855, and died April 24, aged 50 years 4 months and 20 days. The greater number of these years were lived in Kendallville, being an employee with John Deibele and Co. He married Emma Raber on Oct. 10, 1878, who with their 3 sons remain. He also leaves one grandson, Parley Melvin Pierce; one aunt, Mrs. L. C. VanHusan, Burr Oak, Mich., one sister, Mrs. Frank VanHusan of Detroit, Mich. He has been identified with the Evangelical Association for a number of years where funeral was held. ^ 5-4-1906
Pierce Ruby I, 99, Albion, died March 3, 2009 at Kendallville Manor Nursing Home. She was born March 28, 1909 in Albion to Simon and Anna (Rodman) Merriman. On Oct. 22, 1927 in Goshen, Indiana, she married Webster Pierce. He died November 9, 1996. She attended the Albion Asbury United Methodist Church and was employed for many years at Black Mercantile in Albion as a clerk. She and her husband owned a poolroom and family restaurant in Albion for many years. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Mary Jane Pierce of Kendallville; a daughter, Carol Bushong of Mason City, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Bruce, Damon and Greg Pierce, Lana Tumbleson, James Bushong and Mindy Collazo; 16 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Pierce, Sr. and Patty (Baird) Pierce. He was a mechanic and employed at VanGorder Sales in Avilla for 18 years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2749, Eagles Lodge 985 and the American Legion Post 86 all in Kendallville. Survivors include 2 daughters, Shannon Sizemore of Wolcottville; Jackie Conley of Wolcottville; grandchildren, Austin Sizemore, Hailee Ash, Lilly Baird, Allyson Conley, Kinsey Keck, Dakota Keck, and Maddie Hoag; mother; brother, John and Gail “Twink” Pierce of Rome City; sister, Janet and Ron Farmer of Auburn. He was preceded in death by his father, who died January 27, 1983; and infant son, Steven E. Pierce,Jr., who died May 8, 1974; and his sister, Margaret Pierce died July 5, 2012. Pierson Aaron Edward was born at Cosperville Feb. 17, 1840 and died at his home in Rome City March 30 at the age of 64 years 1 month and 12 days. He was the second son of Thomas and Margaret (Taylor) Pierson. He removed to Jasper County, Ind. in 1874 and was pastor of the Good Hope congregation for 25 years. He removed to Rome City Sept. 2, 1900. He married Phoebe McColly July 7, 1864. They had seven sons and 5 daughters. His wife died Nov. 26, 1895. He enlisted in Co. G. 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Sept. 1861. Was discharged in Oct. 1862 on account of a surgeon’s certificate of disability. He was a charter member of Kerr Post No. 529 G.A.R. Pierson James W, 76, of Rome City, died May 28, 2008 at Miller's Merry Manor, LaGrange. He attended Rome City High School and retired in 1992 from Flint & Walling in Kendallville after 42 years of service. He was born Nov. 18, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Clarence and Helen (Schwartz) Pierson. He married Wanda L. Wallen on Feb. 4, 1952 in LaGrange. Surviving are his wife; a son, James Jr. and his wife, Dinah, of Kendallville; a granddaughter, Melissa Duff; a great-grandson, Benjamin Duff; and a sister, Gloria Hicks of Auburn. Piggott Clara, 91, of R. 1, Wawaka, died Saturday at Strawberry Village Health Care Center. She was born Jan. 5, 1889 in Noble County and married Edward T. Piggott Feb. 8, 1916 in Wawaka. Piggott John was fatally shot at Devils River, Texas on Dec. 12 and died on the 13th. A few years ago he was a citizen of Wawaka and of late a section boss at Ligonier. He emigrated to Texas in 1879 and had been in the mercantile business most of the time ever since. ^ 12-29-1881
Piggott Lillian Irene, 92, of Wawaka, died April 29, 2008 at Northridge Village in Albion. She had been a telephone operator in Wawaka and Albion and had worked several years in the post office in Wawaka. She was a 1933 graduate of Wawaka High School and a member of Wawaka United Methodist Church. She was born March 29, 1916 in Paulding County, Ohio to Albert and Anna (Weller) Jacob. She married Wallace E. Piggott on Oct. 24, 1944. He died in 1995. Surviving are 2 sons, Bill, and Mike and Linda all of Wawaka; a sister, Viola Trittipo of Albion; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers and a sister. He married Lillian Jacob on October 24, 1944 in Portland, Maine. A lifetime Wawaka area resident, he was a farmer; a U. S. Navy veteran of WW II; and a member of Wawaka United Methodist Church. Pignataro Edith L, 79, died June 11. She was born May 21, 1891 in Germany and came to the U. S. when a small child. On May 10, 1930 she and Dominic Pignataro were married in Peru. He died in 1962. Pike Divine W, 32, died at his residence in this city June 8 from the effects of a shot which he received in May 18, 1877. He had suffered severely from the wound, most of the time during the year, although at one time he had so far recovered as to resume his business as clerk in the store. An inquest and through examination revealed that the ball had worked its way down through the brain and was found in the base of the posterior lobe. An encysted tumor had formed where the ball first lodged and was the cause of much of the pain and hastened his death. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that he came to his death from the effects of a wound inflicted with a revolver in the hands of J. W. Bixler May 18, 1877. The widow has gone to Phoenix, New York to live with her mother. > 6-13-1878
Pike Elizabeth (Geddis) was born in Belleville, Richland County, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1834; died at Kendallville Jan. 23, aged 54 years, 2 months and 25 days. She was married to Daniel Pike Feb. 1, 1857 and was the mother of 8 sons and one daughter, all of whom are living. Her husband preceded her in death by almost four years. Her life has been spent mainly in the states of Indiana and Michigan. She united with the United Brethren Church. Funeral took place from the Christian Church Thursday. ^ 1-25-1889

Pike Ida May, daughter of Banner R. and Catherine Elizabeth Sheffer, was born in Kendallville March 16, 1870; died in Albion, Dec. 4, 1932, age 62 years, 8 months and 18 days. She grew to womanhood in the town of her birth and was married to Stephen A. Pike Dec. 28, 1889, after which she moved with her husband to Traverse City, Mich., soon after moving to a farm in Benzie County, Mich., where she reared her 3 sons, Glen H., Basil O., and Stephan A., all of whom with her 2 sisters, Bertha S. Haney, Ora W. Knight; and one brother, Roy Ross Sheffer; and 5 grandchildren survive her. Burial, Roseland Park Cemetery, Detroit, Mich. + 12-?-1932
Pike Linus E died at his home in this city on May 7. He was born in Vienna, Oneida County, N.Y., May 1, 1835. After the death of his father he remained with his widowed mother and cared for her until her death in 1870. Soon after at the age of 36 he came west and settled in Kendallville. He had a little store at the northwest corner of Main and Mitchell Streets. In 1872 he married Roselda, daughter of Leonard Demmon of this city. Surviving are the wife and children. ^ 5-12-1881
Pike Lotta and Bertha, 2 little daughters of Mrs. L. E. Pike, aged 7 and 5 respectfully, died of diphtheria, one on Friday and the other on Saturday last. Herself and a younger child are recovering from the same disease. Later. The remaining child, a son of nearly 3 years of age, died on Wednesday and was laid beside his sisters on Thursday. Pilgrim Buella, 58, widow of George Pilgrim, formerly of Avilla, died in Chicago November 23 following a heart attack Thanksgiving Day. Surviving is the mother, Mrs. Clara Louise Fulk of Auburn, two sons, George Pilgrim Jr., of Chicago; Clifford Pilgrim, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany; one daughter, Barbara Jean, Chicago, and six grandchildren. Pilgrim Cleon, 59, died Thanksgiving after suffering a heart attack a short time before. He was born and raised in Avilla, but went to make his home in Chicago when a young man. He had resided there the remainder of his life. Surviving are the wife, the former Jennie Stellhorn; one son, Richard; a daughter, Jean; one sister, Lucile Pilgrim; and two brothers, Glenn and Harold, all of Chicago. ~ 11-29-1951
Pilgrim Frances A (Billings) was born in Clinton, Macomb County, Mich. Sept. 3, 1840. When about 4 years of age she came with her parents to Noble County. They settled on a farm in Swan Twp. She married Daniel Pilgrim June 18, 1856 at Swan. They resided there until 1863 when they moved to Avilla, at which place she remained until her death on May 10. She was found lying upon the floor at her residence this morning, having evidently fallen from a couch where she had been lying. She complained of earache this morning and her husband placed some cotton in her ear and went to his work. A few minutes later she was found. She was 53 years 8 months and 7 days of age. She was the mother of 8 children, 4 of whom survive her, along with 3 sisters and one brother. She united with the Evangelical Church in Avilla in 1873, where funeral was held May 13. Pilgrim H D died at his home in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Pilgrim and daughter had been visiting in Auburn and this place, and their neighbors knew that Mr. Pilgrim was at home alone. They saw him about the house every day until Tuesday night. When he failed to appear Thursday evening the police were called. On entrance to the house being forced, the body was found lying on the floor with evidence that he had ended his life by drinking carbolic acid. He was employed at the Baker Wagon Works on Lafayette St. His health had been poor for some time and he was unable to work the past week. Besides the wife and daughter, two brothers, T. F. and Edward, of this place, survive. Funeral was Sunday. The remains were taken to Auburn and a short burial service held. ~ 7-19-1916
Pilgrim Jennie B, widow of Cleon R. Pilgrim and sister of Frank Stellhorn of Garrett, died Tuesday at the EUB Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. A son, Rev. Richard Pilgrim of Darlington, Wis., and a daughter, Jean Kelley of Chicago and four grandchildren, Joanne, Rebecca, Barbara and David, survive. Pilgrim Theron Franklin was the son of Daniel and Frances Pilgrim, born in Avilla on Feb. 26, 1869. He was one of eight children, but now all the family are gone except one brother, Edward of this place. On April 15, 1891 he married Hattie Shearer of Auburn. They had six children, five of whom, Cleon, George, Lucile, Glen and Harold, remain, one daughter having died in infancy. He has spent most of his life in this town. For eleven years he was in the employ of the Eckhart Buggy Mfg. Co. of Auburn. However, for the last fifteen years he has lived here. His disease has left him unable to do the work of his blacksmith shop for a year. For six years he was a member of the town board. He became a member of the M. E. Church here. His death came Oct. 2, 1916 at the age of 47 years, 7 months and 6 days. Funeral will be Wednesday. Burial, Avilla Cemetery. ~ 10-4-1916

Pincheon Elmer Mrs, 78, resident of Noble County for a number of years, died Feb. 6 at her home in Tunnelton. She resided at Wolf Lake and community until 1923 when they left Noble County where they operated a berry farm. Funeral was held Feb. 9 at Tunnelton and burial was made there beside the grave of her infant daughter who died many years ago. She was a well-known musician and writer of Bible stories for farm magazines and newspapers and was a member of Wolf Lake Seventh Day Adventist church. Pinchon Frank A, living about 2 miles south of Wolf Lake, died on Tuesday of last week, aged 72 years. His wife had gone to the barn and when she returned found him lying in the doorway dead. Surviving are the widow, formerly Mrs. Belle Stroupe of Fort Wayne, to whom he was married in June 1911; 2 children, Mrs. Ramp of Columbia City, and Elmer of Wolf Lake, children by the first marriage, their mother who was formerly Caroline Deckman having died in 1909; a brother, Jeff of Columbia City; 3 half-brothers, Hiram of Fremont, Ind., George, Ligonier, and Charles, St. Paul, Min.; 3 half-sisters, Mrs. Jennie Randall, St. Joe, Ind., Mrs. Ola Bailey, Mich., and Mrs. Iva Tyler, Ligonier; 2 grandchildren. He was a son of the late Anthony Pinchon and wife. After his marriage he came from Pa. and settled at Wawaka, where he resided for a time and then moved to Noble Twp where he had since resided. Pinkerton Bertha Streby, 91, died March 6 in Magnolia Manor, Americus, Ga. A former resident of Avilla, she was born February 24, 1897 in Berne, Switzerland to Henry and Karoline (VanGerger) Flick. She married Guy Streby in 1919 and he died in 1960. In 1962 she married William Pinkerton, who died in 1964. Surviving are two stepsons, Robert and Glen Pinkerton; a stepdaughter, Jean Templin; one sister, Margaret Hansen; several nieces and nephews, including Ward Streby of Kendallville. Piper Mildred L, 67, of Danville, a resident of this community in the 1930’s when her husband, John R., was a teacher and basketball and baseball coach in Avilla High School, died today in the home of a son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Huber in Bedford. Death was from lung cancer. She was born March 19, 1913 in Parke County, the daughter of John H. and Louzetta (Gardner) Jollief, and was married June 12, 1935 in North Manchester. He died Aug. 14, 1977 following open heart surgery. Pippenger Chester, 70, died Sept. 5, 2010 at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1939 in Green Center, the son of Everett and Carrie (Craft) Pippenger. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Lois J. Truelove in Sept. 1963. He retired from Tenneco in Ligonier after 16 years and Custom Mowing after 24 years. Surviving are his wife; his son Chad E. (Gina) Pippenger, his daughter Christie K. Pippenger Emma, (b. 1-16-1873 - d. 12-3-1948) a native of Noble County and a resident of Kendallville nearly a half century, died at McCray Hospital Friday from a blood clot and pneumonia. She was born Jan. 16, 1873, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Emahiser. She moved to Kendallville from Albion with her husband, the late Oscar Pippenger, who died last Jan. 5. They were married at Albion Sept. 28, 1892. Surviving are 2 sons, Archie of Albion, William of Mishawaka; and a daughter, Mrs. R. G. Pippenger Oscar Sherman, 81, (b. 10-14-1866) native and lifelong resident of Noble County, and a citizen of Kendallville since 1912, died at the family home, 117 N. Grant St. Monday from complications incident to senility. He was born Oct. 14, 1866, near Albion, the oldest of seven children of Ephram and Rebecca Lock Pippenger. He had been partially blind since 1929, but despite the affliction, was always jovial. He and his family came here from Albion in 1912 and for years he had been custodian at the Flint & Walling Manufacturing Co. offices. He was married Sept., 28, 1892 to Emma Emahiser of Albion, and the couple recently observed their 55th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Macabees for many years and was also affiliated with the Methodist Church since 1892 and active in the affairs of both. Mr. Pippenger loved music and devoted much of his spare moments to playing the harmonica and violin. Despite his affliction of impaired sight, he continued to carry on and almost daily made trips to the business district until his last illness. Surviving besides the widow are two sons, Archie of Albion, and William of Mishawaka; a daughter, Mrs. R. G. (Mabel) McCreary, South Bend; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Ed of near Albion, and Wilbur, Brownsville, Tex.; and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Ritter, Cromwell, and Mrs. Alma Walters, Kendallville. Platner Catharine, 89, died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. She was born July 19, 1901 in Toledo, Ohio to Victor E. and Mabel (McCoy) Canode. On June 9, 1933 she married Conrad Wendell Platner, who died June 17, 1948. She began teaching in Kendallville in 1921 and taught in Ohio and Fort Wayne before returning to Kendallville to teach for East Noble School Corporation until 1969. She was a member of Tri Kappa and First Presbyterian Church and was named "Citizen of the Year" in 1979 by the Kendallville Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. James T. Pochterman Albert, about 71, a native and lifelong resident of Noble County was found dead Monday on the Stacy Steel farm west of here by hunters. He apparently had wandered away from the Noble County Infirmary nine days previously and had been seen only once since then. He died as the result of exposure about Nov. 4. Poe Lela J, 88, a resident of Churubusco, died Feb. 19 at the Oaks Living Center, Columbia City. She was born May 11, 1909 in Maples, Allen County, to John W. and Julia Coulardot Nail. She graduated from New Haven High School. On Aug. 6, 1929 she married Charlie Claude Poe. In 1954 they moved to a farm in Smith Twp, Whitley County. Following his death on March 19, 1996, she moved to Churubusco. She is survived by 6 daughters, Mrs. Alton (Marilyn) Gross of LaOtto, Mrs. Frank (Carol) Frazier of LaPorte, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Patton Johnson of Spring Lake, Mich., Mrs. Owen (Vera) Gross of Churubusco, Mrs. Nick (Elaine) Zolman of Columbia City, and Mrs. Ray (Sue) Claxton of Fort Wayne; and son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jacqueline Poe of Angola; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Lomont of New Haven; a sister-in-law, Maurine Nail of Roanoke; and a brother-in-law, Harry Emenhiser of Maples. Poer in 1926. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kendallville and the Eastern Star in North Manchester. Poer James Lowell, 51, died Sunday in his Avilla residence from cancer. He was born August 21, 1943 in Wabash to Lowell S. and Ethel M. (Flora) Poer. On February 4, 1966 in Fort Wayne he married Welma Meyer. A 1962 graduate of Avilla High School and 1986 graduate of Purdue University, he was founder and co-owner of J&B Industrial Specialties and Ultrexx in Avilla. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Department, all of Avilla. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Christine and Jennifer; and a sister, Joan Michel of North Manchester. Two brothers, Morris and George; and a sister, Marion, preceded him in death. A Kendallville resident from 1954 to 1972, he was a retired employee of McCray Refrigerator Co., a member of the First Christian Church and Eastern Star, both in Kendallville, and the Masonic Lodge in North Manchester. He was born in Shelbyville June 24, 1904, the son of Jacob and Edith (Frazee) Poer. He married Ethel M. Flora Aug. 10, 1926. She died July 8, 1979. Pollock Charles E was born in Ligonier June 20, 1861, the son of Cyrus and Martha Kindel Pollock. The families had moved to Indiana from Ohio in an early day, settling first in Sparta Twp, later moving to Perry Twp and Ligonier. There were 9 children in the family, 3 of whom with the parents having died. He is survived by 2 brothers, Mort and Ed of Ligonier; 3 sisters, Mrs. Harry Schotterback of Ligonier, Mrs. William Lafong and Mrs. Myron Baker of Kimmell. He married Mary L. Wright and they became citizens of York Twp. They had three children. A daughter died as an infant; Rolland and Elva grew to manhood. Mary died in 1907, and in a few years followed the death of both sons. One daughter of Rolland’s, Mrs. Mildred Manning of California, survives. In 1918 he married Clara L. McKenzie. She died in 1926. Pollock Cyrus was born in Richland County, Ohio, April 12, 1832, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Lafong, near Kimmell, Indiana, March 13, 1916, aged 83 years, 11 months and one day. His father, Andrew Pollock, was born near Pittsburg in 1778; his mother, Mary Surplus, was born in Pennsylvania in 1800. They moved to Richland County, Ohio, later moving to Noble County, where they lived and died. Cyrus came with his parents to this county in 1853, and married Susana Earnhart Oct. 18, 1956. To this union one child was born, Harriet Pollock. Mrs. Pollock died Nov. 5, 1859. He married Mrs. Martha Jerles Aug. 12, 1860. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are still living. There is one stepson, Henry Jerles, 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He came here when the country was practically new, where beautiful homes and cultivated fields now adorn our land in place of the forest and swamps. He gave his strong body to felling the forest and erecting homes with many others who have long since passed away. He has lived to see what was a partial wilderness, transformed into beautiful homes and cultivated fields. There were but few railroads then and no good roads. There were no automobiles, and few conveyances; binders and mowing machines were scarcely known, and would have been useless among stumps and trees. Funeral in the Sparta Church March 15. She lived her entire life in the house she was born in (built by her Grandfather Hart), and was a member of Washington Twp Homemakers Club. Pollock Martha was born in Green County, Ohio, May 5, 1835, and died at the home of her daughter near Kimmell, Indiana, May 18, 1901, aged 66 years and 13 days. She married Jacob Jerles Oct. 1, 1854, to whom were born two children, a girl and boy, the latter is still living. The husband, Jacob Jerles, died Oct. 1, 1859. She married Cyrus Pollock Oct. 5, 1860, and to this union were born nine children, four boys and five girls, all of whom are living, except one girl who died in infancy. The living are: Chas. Before that, he worked as a mechanic with the Shell Service Station on U.S. 6, as well as at Pankop’s Dodge garage. Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Tammy Johnson of Syracuse and Tina Pontius of Kendallville; a son, Brad and Ralana Pontius of Garrett; 5 grandchildren, Aimee and DeWayne Diehl, Elizabeth Pontius, Adam and Megan Pontius, Kayla and Jason Adams, and Samantha Woollweever; 9 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Geneva Porter of Stroh. Poppy Augustus was born in Hanover, Germany Dec. 24, 1825. He came to this country with his parents in 1833, locating in Maryland. After residing there a few years they moved to Richland County, Ohio; thence to Noble County, settling about 3 and ½ miles northwest of Albion where he resided until his death Sept. 18, aged 72 years 8 months and 24 days. He attended all Noble County Fairs and was a grand marshal in 1999. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Kendallville. He was born April 10, 1907 on the Poppy homestead to Charles and Effie (Sawyer) Poppy. On December 17, 1931 in Angola he married L. Arleen Foster. She died January 17, 1993. Surviving are 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Poppy and Lenard and Joann Poppy of Kendallville; a foster child, Wanda Fordeck of Avilla; and 3 grandchildren, Jason, Aaron and Kristen Poppy. He graduated from Wawaka High School in 1939; attended Grace College at Winona Lake, Temple Missionary Training School in Fort Wayne and was ordained on May 22, 1956. He was born in Rome City on Aug. 30, 1920 to Carlton and Grace (Barrett) Poppy. He married Helen Marie Fisher on April 25, 1943 in Rome City. She died May 1, 2007. Poppy Susanna, daughter of William and Susanna Rendel, was born Feb. 10, 1840 in Ohio, and died at her home near Kendallville Sept. 30, 1890, aged 89 years, 7 months and 20 days. In 1854 she came with her parents to Indiana and located one mile east of the home from which she died. She married Henry Poppy Nov. 6, 1856 and settled on the farm where she has since resided. They began housekeeping in a log cabin. On Sept. 25, two years ago her husband died. They had 3 daughter and 2 sons. Funeral from the Church of Christ in Kendallville, Oct. 2. Poppy Victor A, 77, a native of Elkhart Twp, was born July 28, 1896 to George and Elsie (Wright) Poppy. He was married to Dorothy McCord, who survives. He was a retired cashier of the Albion National Bank, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Albion, the Masonic and Scottish Rite Lodges in Fort Wayne. He resided at 511 Ravenswood Dr., Fort Wayne, moving from Albion three years ago, and died Sunday in Parkview Hospital. Porter Charles D, 75, pioneer citizen, banker and business man of Adams County, died Wednesday at the home of his brother, Dr. Miles F. Porter in Fort Wayne. Funeral will be at Decatur Saturday. Burial, Decatur Cemetery. He was born in Decatur April 3, 1851 and was reared and educated there. For many years he engaged in the drug business at Decatur and Geneva. In 1893 he assisted in the organization of the State Bank at Geneva and became cashier and president, operating the institution for some years. He married Gene Stratton of Wabash in 1886. They resided a greater part of their married life at Geneva where their home became known as Limberlost Cabin and where she gained fame as a writer of nature stories. Some few years ago they erected their Limberlost Cabin on the banks of Sylvan Lake where they made their home. He was one of the original stockholders of the Kendallville Brush & Broom Co. and helped organize the company. She died by accident in California Dec. 6, 1924. + 12-18-1926

Potee Richard "Dick", 64, of R. 2, Topeka, died Saturday at his residence. Born Feb. 21, 1923 in Gary, he was the son of Earl and Meta (Williams) Potee. He married Abbie Polly Nov. 8, 1968 in Trenton, Ga. He had lived in the Rome City-Topeka area for 50 years and was a WW II Army veteran, receiving a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts with Clusters. He retired in 1985 from Starcraft, Topeka, where he worked in quality control. Potter Beverly Ann, 64, of Avilla, died July 15, 2000 in her residence. She was born in Avilla on November 30, 1935 to William Burley and Fern Emma (Gump) Hindenlang. On December 5, 1953 in Avilla she married Ivan Potter. He survives. A lifetime area resident, she was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She was a direct mail specialist at Uniform Information Center for 28 years. She retired in 1997. Also surviving are a daughter, Nancee S. Potter Charley J, oldest son of Galutia and Phebe Potter, was born in Swan Twp July 11, 1854. His father died when he was 19 years old, leaving a double responsibility upon him, looking after the interest of the farm and caring for his brother, Newton, who was 6 years his junior. He was married to Viola Houder April 13, 1879. They had one girl and 2 boys. He was born and always lived on the farm where he died and all his father’s family died. Potter Elroy, about 75, of Huntertown, died Nov. 15, 1964 in McCray Hospital. He was a member of the Huntertown Methodist Church and International Union of Operating Engineers. He was retired after 28 years as a crane operator for John Dehner Construction Co. Potter I Ray died at the McCray Hospital Saturday. He had been a lifelong resident of Noble County, having been a teacher for 35 years in Swan Twp prior to his retirement only a year ago. Potter Isabella S (Bruce), born in New York, 1815; settled 1840; died December 2, 1896, aged over 81 years. Had been the widow of Vernum Potter twenty-three years. Her husband was killed accidentally. He was thrown from a load of hay while entering the door of James Potter’s bank barn in March 1873 and instantly killed. Mrs. Potter was a woman of rare gifts and accomplishments, was a successful teacher in her native state and after she came to Indiana; was a great reader and graceful writer - a poetess and elegant prose writer - her productions bearing evidence of fine taste and fervent spirituality, and withal, she possessed the essential practical virtues and abilities that made her a model pioneer woman. + Clippings book
Potter James, second son of Dr. Oliver and Clarissa Potter, was born in Wayne County, N.Y. Sept. 21, 1822. He came with his parents to Allen County, Ind. at the age of 13. At the age of 23 he married Almira Grey. They lived together about 3 years when death separated them. They had 2 children, both dying in infancy. In 1851 he married Clarissa Rich. Death severed their relations after 33 years. They had 7 girls and 2 boys. Four died in infancy. In 1887 he married Eunice McCarty, who survives him. He united with the Baptist Church at Eel River at the age of 36. His occupation has been farming with the exception of a few years he was a general merchant at this place. He has always lived on the farm where he died, except a few years in Noble County and one year in Iowa. He died Dec. 14, 1896, aged 74 years, 29 months and 23 days. * 12-14-1896

She went with her husband and 2 children to California during the gold excitement over 30 years ago and suffered the various hardships of an overland trip at that early day. Potter Maria L, daughter of John and Mary E. Young, was born in Swan Twp Feb. 23, 1862, and died Nov. 16, 1911 of neuralgia of the heart; aged 49 years, 8 months and 23 days. She was married April 18, 1883 to Newton G. Potter, who died 12 years ago. They had 3 children, Verna A., and Fred L., who made their home with their mother at Ari, and N. Elroy of Idaho, all of whom survive. One brother, John S. Young of South Bend, Ind.; an uncle, Henry A. Grim of Ari also survive. Potter Ruby E, 95, died September 19, 1990 in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Ligonier. She was born in Jefferson Twp, Noble County, to Benjamin F. and Nancy (Bailey) Bortner. She married Joseph Grams in 1913. In 1956 she married Roy Potter, who died in 1973. She had worked for George Master and Wirk Garment Co. in Albion and Ligonier and retired in 1959. She was a member of Ligonier Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Ligonier Eagles Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, J. Carl Grams of Ligonier; 2 grandchildren, Nancy G. and Jerry C. Potter Vernum, an old resident of Swan Twp, was killed instantly March 4 by a fall from a load of hay which was being driven into the barn of his brother, James. The deceased was on the back part of the load and as they were ascending the bridge leading to the door (the barn was a bank barn) the binding pole broke, the load fell back and Mr. Potter was precipitated to the ground a distance of nearly 20 feet, killing him instantly. Potts Claude W, Helmer, died Sept. 6 in Cameron Hospital, Angola. He was born April 9, 1884 in Kendallville, the son of Frank and Henrietta (Rockefeller) Potts. He married Imo Deal, who died July 9, 1940. He was a retired cabinet maker and had worked for McCray Refrigeration. He had lived in Carlin Park Convalescent Home since 1961. Potts John was born near Toronto, Canada Dec. 10, 1805; died Jan. 18 at the age of 82 years, 1 month. He, with his parents, emigrated to the United States in 1809 and settled in Richland County, Ohio. On Nov. 20, 1828 he married Polly Jackson. In 1841 he moved to Indiana and settled in Jefferson Twp, where he resided till his death. He leaves 3 daughters and 2 sons. His wife preceded him in death 9 years ago last Sept., since which time he has resided mostly with his daughter, Abigail Craven. Potts John, 42, died last evening at Lakeside Hospital from injuries sustained last Saturday in an automobile accident. A veteran of the World War, he was born July 9, 1891 at Indianapolis where he spent the early years of his life. Since residing here he has held the position of superintendent of the Watters Portman Wheel Co. Surviving are the widow; one son, Elmer; his father, A. Potts Joseph Shepherd was born in Clearspring Twp, LaGrange County, Nov. 8, 1837. He died at his home in Lisbon May 28, 1907. He married Adaline Haller of Wolcottville April 18, 1861. He enlisted in the 44th Ind. Vol. Inf. Nov. 8, 1861 and served until the end of the rebellion. He came with his family to Kendallville Jan. 1, 1870 and lived in this community until his death. Potts Marion D was found dead at his jewelry store in Kendallville Thursday from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. His death was a result of the late war. He enlisted early in the conflict sacrificing his business to serve his country. After his discharge he reopened his jewelry business and despite personal ill health and in his immediate family, he made very effort to forget his war experiences. Surviving are the widow, Jeannette; 2 sons, William 11, and Thomas 20 months; his father and his grandmother, Mrs. Henrietta Potts, all of Kendallville. Potts Polly died in Jefferson Twp Sept. 21, 1878, aged 69 years, 1 month and 26 days. She was born in Morris County, N.J. on July 25, 1809 and moved with her parents, David and Prudence Jackson, to the state of Ohio in 1814 and settled in Knox County, where she was married to John Potts on Nov. 20, 1828. Potts R C, 81, native of LaGrange County, and one of the few Civil War veterans remaining in this community, died Saturday at the home of his son, Lewis. Death was due to complications incident to old age. Born April 9, 1848 at the edge of the Hawpatch in LaGrange County, he spent practically his entire life in LaGrange and Noble Counties. He resided in Kendallville for 15 years before moving to Rome City where he had lived for the past 43 years. During the Civil War he saw considerable action as a member of a heavy artillery battery. He served through the war without injury, returning to his home in northern Indiana after the conflict was ended. For many years he had been active as a member of the GAR. Surviving are the son, Lewis where he made his home; a son Earl at Portersville, Calif.; and a daughter, Mrs. Eva Joppa of Los Angeles. Funeral Tuesday at the home of the son Lewis. Poulson John was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, April 18, 1808. In 1841 he married Charlotte James. They came to the states in 1849 and located in Jackson County, Iowa, till 1876. They made a visit to England and returned to Jackson County in 1880 where they made their home until the death of his wife, Jan. 18, 1882, leaving 4 sons and one daughter. He moved to Indiana after her death. In 1884 he married Mrs. Mary A. E. Jones, who died July 23, 1888, after which he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Popejoy until his death. His remains were taken to Jackson County, Iowa for interment. He was a member of the M. P. Church. ^ 2-28-1896
Poulson Mary A E was born near Nashville, Tenn. April 27, 1827; died July 23, aged 61 years, 3 months and 11 days. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. She resided many years in and near the city. She was married 3 times. Pounds Helen L, 75, died Tuesday at Whitley County Hospital. She was born Dec. 26, 1906 in Whitley County, the daughter of Otis and Chloa Mae (Connell) Carter. On Dec. 20, 1930 she married Archie Pounds, who died in 1975. She spent most of her life in Whitley County and in 1928 graduated from Columbia City High School and in 1930 from Indiana Teachers College in Indianapolis. She taught elementary education in Columbia City and for 18 years was a substitute teacher in Noble and Whitley County schools. She was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Churubusco. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. David (Sueann) Brady of Churubusco; a son, James A. of Syracuse; 2 sisters, Mary Shaffer of Columbia City, and Irene Tucker of Merriam; a brother, David of Albion; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Powell Helen I., 90, of Kendallville, died Oct. 2, 2011 at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville. She was born in Auburn on Oct. 10, 1920, to Verne and Anna M. (Bauer) Diehm. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1939. She married her first husband, Ralph Powell, April 21, 1940, in Fremont, and he died April 29, 1965. She married her second husband, Clarence Powell, Nov. 3, 1967, in Waterloo, and he died in May of 1993. She cleaned homes in the Kendallville and Fremont areas for 50 years. She was a member of the South Milford United Methodist Church in South Milford. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn and Joe Kessler of Middlebury, Connie and Roger Sparkman of Kendallville and Bonnie Gainwell of Coldwater, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Robert Kessler, Deborah McKee, Jeff and Michelle Kessler, Kim and Dave Burnson, Todd Powell, Erica Bird and Ryan Weeks, Barry Poynter and Evelyn and Billy Baker; 14 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was born March 6, 1914, the son of Clarence and Dorothy (Mory) Powell. He was married in Kendallville in 1941 to Dorothy Marie Diehm, who died in 1966. He was retired from the J Box Co. in Auburn. Powell Ralph H, 50, of 309 S. Main St., died Thursday in McCray Hospital. He was a native of Union City, Mich., born March 23, 1915 and worked as a farmer in the South Milford community until eight years ago. He was married April 22, 1940 to Helen Diehm, who survives. Powell Rex Everett, 51, of Kissimmee, Fla., and formerly of Kimmell, died April 1 in Good Samaritan Hospital, Kissimmee. He was born Nov. 6, 1936 in Goshen, the son of Buren "Auto" and Nellie (Rogers) Powell. Powers Dean K, 82, of Kendallville, died Jan. 6, 2005 at Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center. He had been a heavy equipment operator for more than 40 years with Operating Engineers Union, Local 103 of Fort Wayne, before retiring in 1987. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WW II and was a member of American Legion Post 86 and VFW Post 2749 in Kendallville. He was born June 3, 1922 in Steuben County to Orville and Blanche (Fireovid) Powers. On June 10, 1965 in Angola he married Shirley Maxine Morr. She died June 6, 1984. Poyser John A, living in east Albion, deliberately swallowed a large dose of strychnine with suicidal purpose and died within an hour. Some domestic trouble and a state of general despondency are the supposed causes. The remains were buried Monday. He leaves a widow (a second wife) and a large family of his and her children in poor circumstances. His age was a little over 45 years. ^ 5-1-1891
