Pera Rita M, 81, Glenville, N.Y., died October 13, 2003 at her home. She was born November 2, 1921 in Avilla to Charles and Mary (Demske) Helmer. On May 8, 1943 she married Robert A. Pera. He died May 5, 1976. Surviving are 2 daughters, Judith Ann Granbacka of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Kathleen M. Wands of Glenville; 2 sisters, Laroma Slater and Joan Campbell of Fort Wayne; a brother, James Helmer of Fort Wayne; 3 grandchildren, Nick Perillo, Janis Long and Jill Frattallone; and 2 great-grandchildren, Chase Long and Brianna Perillo. Also preceding her in death were 3 brothers, Dale, Virgil and Phil Helmer; and 2 sisters, Geraldine Meyer and Patricia Helmkamp. She had been employed at Tower personnel in Fort Wayne and had retired from Central Soya in Fort Wayne. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville. Perfect Stephen M, 18, of Huntertown, died May 29 and services were June 1 in Faith United Church of Christ. Burial, Lindenwood Cemetery. He was an employee of Deister Machine Co., Inc. Pergrem Heraldon "Pooie", 76, of Topeka, died Sunday in Goshen General Hospital. He was born August 26, 1916 in Bath County, Ky., to Luther and Millie (Roberson) Pergrem. On June 1, 1938 in Goshen he married Virginia McDaniels. He lived most of his life in the area and had operated filling stations for 46 years, including the Texaco Station in Ligonier. He was a WW II Army veteran and a member of LaGrange American Legion Post. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Layton of Syracuse and H. Royd of Wawaka; 4 sisters, Bernice Salisbury of Kewanee, Ill., Juanita Watson of Fort Wayne, Evelyn Bixler of Mishawaka, and Sal Coffman of Goshen; a half-sister, Anna Grushon of Miamisburg, Ohio; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Pergrem Robin L, 41, died Monday in St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend. She was born in Wolf Lake on October 24, 1951 to Donald and Rosemary (Prucinsky) Gillespie. On December 31, 1987 in Wawaka she married Royd Pergrem. A 1969 graduate of Ligonier High School and 1974 graduate of Indiana University, she was a first grade teacher at West Noble Elementary School. Surviving are her parents; her husband; a son, Kevin Sheley of Ligonier; 2 daughters, Kaitlyn and Alexandria Pergrem of Wawaka; 3 brothers, Steve Gillespie of Eunice, La., Mike Gillespie of Whiteland and Chris Gillespie of Ligonier; grandparents, Russell Baker of Ocala, Fla., and Margaret Prucinsky of Albion. Pergrem Virginia L, 90, of Ligonier, died March 3, 2008 at Maples of Waterford Crossing Nursing Home in Goshen. She retired from Monsanto in Ligonier after 15 years of service. She was a 1936 graduate of Burr Oak High School in Burr Oak, Mich. She was born Feb. 22, 1918 in Chicago to Roy and Catherine (Sheely) McDaniels. She married Heraldon Layton Pergrem on June 1, 1938 in Goshen. He died June 13, 1993. Surviving are 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Layton and Cynthia Pergrem and H Royd Pergrem, all of Syracuse; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Smith, and a brother, Ira McDaniels. Graveside services Tuesday in Oak Park Cemetery. ^ 3-13-2008
Perkins Alice Lucille, 81, died Friday at Shepherd of the Hill nursing home. She was born December 3, 1911 in White County to Myron and Nellie (Piatt) Eddy. On June 16, 1932 in White County she married Russell Charles Perkins, who died January 5, 1980. She was a member of Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren, rural Ashley. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Faith) Marti, and one son, Doyne, both of Kendallville; 2 sisters, Nina Kelly of Reynolds and Frances B. Allen of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One son, Robert, and one brother, Emmett, preceded her in death. Funeral today in the church. Perkins Andrew, 8, R. 3, Ligonier, was killed Tuesday when he rode his bicycle into the path of a car near here. Funeral will be Friday in Green Chapel Wesleyan Methodist Church. Perkins Austin, 80, of Rome City died Jan. 19, 2011 at his home. He was born in Carrie, Kentucky, on September 6, 1930, to Estil and Georgia Ann (Polly) Perkins. He married Betty Irene Young on October 7, 1953. He worked at Carrier Lee Warehouse in Chicago for 16 years and then worked for Mary Ann Bakery in Chicago for another 16 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Bethel Christian Baptist Church in Kendallville. Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Wade Perkins of Kendallville and Wayne and Doreen Perkins of Rome City; 2 granddaughters, Deanne Perkins and Kristen Perkins; 4 brothers, Jimmie and Jeanette Perkins of Rome City, Joe and Donice Kay Perkins of Rome City, Estil ,Jr. and Bessie Perkins of Carrie, Kentucky, and Keith and Bobbie Perkins of Lyons, Georgia; 4 sisters, Martha Ellen Fugate of Chicago, Iva Pearl and Jerry Haston of LaGrange, Donna and Ronnie Smith of Carrie, Kentucky, and Beulah Mehallopis of Hanover Park, Illinois. Perkins Bobby Ray, 58, died October 12, 1901 in Parkview Hospital. He was born in Carrie, Ky., October 26, 1932, the son of Estill and Georgia Ann Polly Perkins. A factory worker, he retired on disability from Coachmen Industries in Middlebury. He married Donna Rasler in Wolcottville, May 1, 1982. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Bobbi Joe Perkins of Rome City, Debby Schults of San Bernadino, Calif., Charlene of Chicago, Ill., and Terry Lynn of Calif.; 3 sons, Doug of Ashley, Dwaine Schults of Huntington and Douglas Smith of Fla.; 5 stepchildren; 6 brothers, Danny and Jim of Rome City, Keith of Lyons, Ga., Austin of Chicago, Ill., Junior of Carrie, Ky., and Cova of Hazard, Ky.; 7 sisters, Iva Haston, Armelda Ritchie, Martha Fugate, Beulah Mihalopoulos, Matie Combs, Donna Smith and Ella Mays; and 23 grandchildren. Perkins Clarence E, 8, died Friday at DeKalb Hospital. He was born June 18, 1908 in DeKalb County, the son of Samuel and Mary Alice (McClish) Perkins. On September 22, 1932 he married Leora P. Landis in Middlebury. A lifetime resident of DeKalb County, he retired in 1973 after 6 years with Cooper in Auburn. He was a self-employed farmer and member of Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren in Hudson. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. Richard (Marilyn) Hulen of Kendallville and Mrs. Russell (Annabelle) Conrad of New Port Richey, Fla.; 2 sons, Morris of Garrett and Arnold of Kendallville; 3 sisters, Rena Hanes and Bessie Miller of Wolcottville and Ruth Stackhouse of Kendallville; one brother, Ford of Hudson; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Perkins Francis L, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Perkins, was born in Noble County Jan. 21, 1855, and died Sept. 25, 1907, aged 52 years 8 months and 4 days. He was left without a mother at the age of 18 months; a home was found for him with Mr. J. W. Leonard, where he lived until he was 16. He worked by the month and lived with Mr. and Mrs. John Milks until his marriage to Emma Austin Dec. 4, 1876. They had 3 children, one son dying in infancy. He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. Alph Reed and Miss Alma; son-in-law, Prett Reed; and granddaughter, Georgia Reed. He was a Universalist in inclination. Perkins James, 48, of Wolcottville, died Sept. 22, 2009 in his residence. He was born November 24, 1960, in Noble County to Arnold and Joan (North) Perkins. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Joan & Edward Subzda of Rome City; his father, Arnold Perkins of Wolcottville; three daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Griffiths of Elkhart, Loni and Jamey Owens of LaGrange, and Boni Perkins of Albion; eight grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Christina and Ronald Tuttle of Angola, three stepsisters, Nicole Miller of Wolcottville, Kathy Honaker of Wolcottville, and Deb Brockman of Kendallville; and 2 stepbrothers, Brett and Tracy Honaker of Wolcottville. Perkins Leora P, 81, died Thursday in DeKalb Hospital. She retired in 1973 as a laborer for Cooper Engineered Products, Auburn. She was born August 4, 1914 in Fort Wayne to Paul and Wanda (Blech) Landis. She married Clarence E. Perkins on September 22, 1932. He died June 19, 1992. Surviving are 2 sons, Morris of Garrett and Arnold of Wolcottville; 2 daughters, Marilyn Hulen of Kendallville and Annabelle Conrad of New Port Richey, Fla.; 4 sisters, Eileen Simons of Angola, Ruth Richter and Eleanor Conrad of Ashley and Troas Edwards of Portland, Ore.; one half-brother, Wayne Orwig of Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Perkins Marie L, 68, died June 26, 2003 at the home of her son, Douglas. She was born in Watertown, S.D. on Sept. 11, 1934 to Albert and Alice (Paso) Schmidt Dummer. In Sept. 1966 she married Bobby Ray Perkins. He died in Oct. 1991. She was a secretary at Electric Cordset in Wolcottville, a medical technician for Rome City ambulance service, and a member of American Legion Post 381. Surviving are 2 daughters, Debra and Daniel Carreras of San Rafael, Calif., and Bobbi Jo Hooser of Kendallville; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Dwaine and Iva Shults of Owingsville, Ky., and Douglas and Dawn Perkins of Butler; a foster son; 4 stepchildren; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; 7 brothers, Clifford McDonald, Wesley, Lloyd, Jim, Johnny, Billy and Eugene Dummer; and 2 sisters, LaVonne Walter and Judy Abraham. Perkins Morris Edward, 71, died March 20, 2006 at Provena Sacred Heart Home. He was born December 21, 1934 in Ashley to Clarence and Leora (Landis) Perkins. He married Mary M. Pittman on June 3, 1955 in Taylor, S.C. She died November 9, 2002. Survivors include a daughter, Kay (Larry) Lafevor, Avilla, and April Perkins, Auburn; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold of Wolcottville; 2 sisters, Marilyn Hulen, Kendallville, and Annabelle Conrad, New Port Richey, Fla. He was a truck driver for 15 years and an Army veteran who lived in Garrett 45 years. Perkins Robert H, 53, of Granger, died Thursday at his residence. He was born in Kendallville April 19, 1933, the son of Russell C. and Alice (Eddy) Perkins. He married Rowena Paul Aug. 15, 1954. An ordained minister, he was principal of Humms Elementary School in Mishawaka. Surviving are his wife and mother; a daughter, Michelle Thielke of Mishawaka; three sons, Robin of Mishawaka, Robert Jr. of Vestaburg, Mich., and Mark at home; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Faith) Marti; and a brother, Doyne, both of Kendallville. Perkins Russell C, 76, of R. 1, Kendallville, died Saturday in McCray Hospital. Born in DeKalb County Dec. 18, 1903, he was the son of Samuel C. and Mary Alice (McClish) Perkins. On June 16, 1932 in Monticello, he married Alice L. Eddy. He was a retired school teacher and a member of Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren and Noble County Retired Teachers Association. Perkins W Ernest "Ernie", 72, of R. 1, Rome City, died early Thursday at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born in Pike County, Ohio, July 17, 1912 and had lived most of his life in Anderson, moving to Rome City in 1972 following his retirement from General Motors Guide Division where he had worked 37 years. He was a member of Central Christian Church, Anderson, and Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 77. Surviving are his wife, the former Ferneva Loudenbach; a daughter, Ardis Entzminger of Columbia, S. Perkins Wade, 54, of Rome City, died February 22, 2012, at Parkview Noble Hospital. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 17, 1957, to Austin and Betty Irene (Young) Perkins. His father preceded his death January 19, 2011. He graduated from Schurz High School, Chicago, in 1976. He was employed in the past with the wheelchair manufacturer Everest and Jennings in Bensenville, Illinois, for 11 years. He attended Bethel Christian Baptist Church. Perlich Alice, 63, died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Garrett. She was born February 14, 1896, and was a lifelong resident of the community. She was a member of the local Evangelical United Brethren Church. Survivors include the husband, Walter; one son, Loyal, of LaPorte; one grandson; and a brother, Nick Anderson of here. Perlich Anna, was born in Green Twp Dec. 24, 1906, the daughter of Herman and Jane (Walburn) Schaefer, and died Aug. 3, 1939, aged 32 years, 7 months and 10 days. All of her early life was spent at the place of her birth, and on Dec. 24, 1925 she married Lloyd W. Perlich of Swan Twp. Shortly after their marriage they moved to her father’s farm near Bethlehem in Swan Twp where they continued their residence until March 1935 when they purchased a farm of their own and moved to Smith Twp, Whitley County, where they maintained their home. They had three sons, Clifford J., and Roger Dean, who with the husband survive, and Herman Fredrick who died in infancy. Surviving relatives include the father of Avilla; one brother, Lloyd near LaOtto. Funeral Sunday at the Methodist Church in Churubusco, of which she was a member. Burial, Eel River Cemetery. * 1939
Perlich Belva J, 64, died Wednesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was a custodian at Fairfield Elementary School for nearly 20 years and was a member of Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren, Ashley. She was born January 18, 1930 in Fairfield Twp to John and Hazel (Perkins) Getts. She married Donald L. Perlich on May 20, 1951 in the Pleasant Chapel Church. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Rex of Linton and Norman of Corunna; 3 daughters, Sheryl Prentice of Ashley, Shirley Johnson of Auburn, and Donna Crow of St. Joe; and 9 grandchildren. Perlich Clifford J, 86, of Avilla, died November 24, 2013. He was born in Noble County on January 31, 1927, to Lloyd W. and Anna (Schaefer) Perlich. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1945 to October 1946. He married Betty Ann Rumsyre on December 24, 1950. He was a dairy farmer from 1950 to 1970. He then retired in 1987 from Smith-Green Community Schools of Churubusco, having worked as a bus driver and on the custodial staff. He was a member of the Churubusco Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by 3 daughters, Virginia Ann (Robert) Bair of Kendallville, Teresa Lee (Ted) Jones and Nancy Ray Heeren both of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Craig, Jarrie (Troy) Alderman, Benjamin M. (Kathryn) Heeren and Weston (Sabrina) Heeren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Robert Bair, and an infant great-granddaughter, Catherine Victoria Heeren. Perlich Donald L, 84, died May 3, 2013, at his home in rural Corunna. He was a lifetime Fairfield Township farmer and drove school bus for DeKalb Central Schools for 37 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member of Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren in Ashley. He was born June 15, 1928, in Kendallville to Earl and Hazel (McCoy) Perlich. He married Belva Getts on May 20, 1951, in the Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren and she died Dec. 28, 1994. Surviving are 2 sons and 3 daughters, Rex (Missy) Perlich of LaFontaine, Ind., Norman Perlich of Corunna, Sheryl (Lowell) Prentice of Ashley, Shirley (Nolan) Johnson of Auburn and Donna (Mark) Crow of St. Joe; a brother, Larry (Kathy) Perlich of Vevay, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Perlich Earl C, 67, Albion, died Thursday in the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born June 19, 1904, in Noble County, the son of Frederick and Emma (Scheurich) Perlich. He was a lifelong resident of the Albion community and engaged in farming. He was a member of the Wawaka Methodist Church. Surviving are the widow, Mildred; three sons, Donald of Corunna, Wayne of LaGrange and Larry of Albion; 4 stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Lloyd of Churubusco. Perlich Emma Ellen, daughter of John and Christena Weimer Scheurich, was born in Swan Twp January 3, 1876 and died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Garrett May 20, 1948, aged 72 years, 4 months and 17 days. On September 1, 1897 she married August F. Perlich from Garrett. They resided there several years where Mr. Perlich worked in the B & O shops. They then moved to Avilla until April, 1909, when they purchased the Anderson homestead in Swan Twp, where they made their home for 39 years. They had four sons: Walter of Avilla, Lloyd of Churubusco, Earl of Albion, and John, who died July 31, 1928. Mr. Perlich preceded her in death February 26, 1946. She leaves three sons; eight grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Scheurich; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Scheurich of Albion and Rhoda Scheurich of Fort Wayne. Surviving are the husband, Earl; three sons, Donald, Corunna, Wayne, near Albion, and Larry, at home; three grandchildren; her father, John McCoy, near Avilla; four sisters, Mrs. Iva Hiatt and Mrs. Herbert Snell of Albion, and Mrs. Virgil Snell and Mrs. Merle Renkenberger of Avilla; and two brothers, Lawrence McCoy, Fort Wayne, and Carl McCoy of Albion. Perlich Loyal E, 70, of Indianapolis and formerly of LaPorte, died May 1, 2000 in The Forum at the Crossing Healthcare Center. He was born November 12, 1929 in Avilla. He taught school for more than 30 years for the LaPorte Community Schools until his retirement. He was a veteran of the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict, receiving a discharge in 1953. He was later a member of the Indiana National Guard. Perry Jada L (b. 5-31-1970 - d. 1-8-1972) 19-month old, better known to thousands as "Baby Jada" lost her fight to replace a defective liver with a transplant when she died Saturday at the Manchester Clinic en route to an Indianapolis Hospital. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milo "Mike" Perry of Goshen and formerly of Albion. The father is a deputy sheriff with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. Perry Mary was born in Wallingford, Litchfield County, Conn. in 1806, where she lived until 12 years of age, after which she lived in central New York and was married to Oliver L. Perry in Cayuga County. After her marriage she moved with her husband to Orleans County, N.Y., from which place she came to Swan Twp where they landed June 3, 1836 upon the farm where she lived over 40 years. The journey from New York to Indiana was made in 2 wagons, each drawn by 2 pair of oxen, and the route was through Canada and Michigan. Mr. Perry died several years ago, since which time the widow has lived on the homestead. She died on Dec. 17, 1876. She was a member of the United Brethren Church and at her death she left quite a bequest to some of the boards connected with it. She left considerable property at the time of death, which was disposed of by will. She was the mother of 8 children, 4 of whom are living: Mrs. Isabella Whan, wife of John Whan of Swan, Mrs. Irene Fair of DeKalb County, and George and French Perry of Swan. Peters Alda, 57, lifelong resident of Noble County, died Saturday at Lakeside Hospital following an operation for cancer. She was born Oct. 26, 1875 in Jefferson Twp, the daughter of John H. and Hannah Moree. She spent the early years of her life on the farm and Aug. 30, 1898 married Frank Peters. They moved to Kendallville 10 years ago and had since resided there. Three years ago she was injured in an automobile accident and since then her health had been gradually failing. Surviving are the husband; a brother, Frank Moree; and one sister, Mrs. S. F. Stahl of Kendallville. One brother and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral Tuesday from the home. Peters Anita D, 76, died Oct. 12, 2010 at North Ridge Nursing Home in Albion. She was born May 15, 1934 in Galesburg, Ill., the daughter of Holmer and Mildred (Cook) Moorhouse. Peters Christ, 61, a lifelong resident of Elkhart Twp, died Wednesday of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Magnuson of near Wawaka of paralysis. He died on the farm where he was born. His wife and 2 children were killed in a railroad accident 12 years ago and since that time he had lived along. Peters Clarence Carl, 76, died Friday at Byron Health Center. He was born March 31, 1910 in Fort Wayne, the son of Jacob and Mary (Henninger) Peters. He was a lifetime resident of Fort Wayne and retired from General Electric in 1970 after 29 years as a machinist. He was a charter member of the Teamsters Union in Fort Wayne. Peters D Maynard, 63, R. 2, Avilla, died Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident December 18 on Baseline Road west of Avilla. Peters Eliza A, wife of J. W. Peters of The Times printing office, died Saturday at the family residence, corner of Market and St. Louis Streets. She was born Nov. 1, 1846 and was 45 years, 11 months and 8 days old. She was married fifteen years ago Tuesday of last week and leaves with him her three children, Miller M. Hadley, Frank Hadley and Luella Peters; and three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Drain, Mrs. Clara Drain and Mrs. Alvira Morrow, all of Ligonier. Four years ago she moved to this city with her family and soon thereafter handed in her letter to the First M. E. Church of this city. Peters Frank, 58, in a fit of despondency apparently developing from financial difficulties, veteran teamster and a resident of this city more than 20 years, ended his life last night by shooting himself in the head with a 32 caliber revolver at the home, 119 Iddings St., where he had been residing alone. He was born in Germany Aug. 21, 1875 and was about 9 years of age when his parents came to this country. August 30, 1898 he married Alda Moree of Jefferson Twp, who died last July. Peters Gene "Pete", 77, of Avilla, died January 30, 2006 at Parkview Noble Hospital. A lifetime resident of the Avilla and LaOtto areas, he was born to Raymond and Hazel (Campbell) Peters on November 2, 1928. He graduated from Avilla High School in 1946. He married Donnabell Mae Miller on November 1, 1958 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Avilla. She died May 27, 1982. He married Lillian (Juengel) Rasler on August 29, 1987. She died December 15, 1996. Peters Israel was born in Pennsylvania March 4, 1813. His early life was spent in Philadelphia. When he was about 30 years of age he removed to Norwalk, O., where he was a prominent merchant for many years. In 1842 he was married at Norwalk to Adaline Harkness and they had 2 daughters and one son, all of whom survive. Mrs. Peters died in 1876. He has been at Kendallville a great deal for the last 12 or 13 years but came here to reside permanently with his daughter, Mrs. D. C. Walling, 5 years ago. Peters Lillian M Rasler, 64, died Dec. 15 at her residence from cancer. She was born March 12, 1932 in Avilla to Martin P. and Edna K. (Weimer) Juengel. On June 14, 1952 in Avilla she married Homer W. Rasler, who died Feb. 23, 1979. On Aug. 30, 1987 in Avilla she married Gene "Pete" Peters. The 1951 graduate of Avilla High School owned Rasler Liquor Store in Kendallville for 13 years and was a partner in Rasler Tax Service in Kendallville. She was a former V&A Restaurant employee and retired from Rivnut Engineered Products Inc. in 1994. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Avilla, for more than 50 years and was a member of Avilla American Legion Auxiliary 240 and the Kendallville Bowling Association. Petersen Lenore, 96, died May 28, 2007 at Shepherd of the Hill nursing home in Kendallville. She was born Oct. 15, 1910 in Noble County to Charles W. and Ida (Secrist) Reed. She married Theodore Petersen on Oct. 19, 1935 in Columbia City. He died in August 1981. She was one of the original employees of Superior Sample in Ligonier, working from the early 60's until retirement in 1973. She was a member of Cromwell Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church. Peterson Kathryn R, 70, R. 3, Ligonier, died Friday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She lived most of her life in Noble and LaGrange Counties and was associated with Peterson Insurance Agency for 20 years. Peterson Logan Mitchell, 7, died February 20, 2007 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had received a heart transplant when he was 3 weeks old. Peterson Maynard E, 83, of rural Albion, died unexpectedly October 2, 2011in the Emergency Room of the Parkview Noble Hospital. He was born June 6, 1928 in Worth County, Iowa, to Gilbert and Alvina (Lau) Peterson. On April 26, 1952, he married Maxine Housholder in Avilla. She died May 31, 2011. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired from Conrail. Since 1957, he also farmed on the family farm in Jefferson Twp. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Peterson Ruth, 94, of Ligonier, died Sunday in Kenney Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 12, 1893 in LaGrange County, the daughter of Josiah and Nora (Benham) Rowe. Petrie Carl Gene, a 23-year old U.S. Army private, died December 24, of multiple factures suffered when his fast-traveling car hit a tree one mile north of Avilla on State Road 3. Apparently the left front tire of his auto blew out, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. He was home on an eight-day leave from his Army assignment at Ft. Myers, Virginia and was staying with his mother. Petrie Rudolph E, 89, proprietor of Rudy’s Tavern in Albion in the 1950’s and 60’s died at his home in Casselberry, Fla. July 22, 1987. Born on a farm near Woodburn, Ind., he was reared in that area where he was educated in a Lutheran parochial school. After finishing school he moved to Fort Wayne and worked for a number of years at International Harvester. June 25, 1938 he married Bertha J. McMillion and in 1940 they moved to Bear Lake. In 1945 they purchased a farm in Jefferson Twp and lived there until he retired in 1975. In addition to operating the farm, he acquired A. J. (Shorty) Rimmel’s tavern on W. Main St. in Albion in the 1950’s and later bought the old Albion movie theatre building on S. Orange St. and converted it into a tavern. He operated it at that location for 5 or 6 years. After retirement the Petries spent the summer months in Florida and winters in Brownsville, Texas. She died in Brownsville Dec. 8, 1977. Surviving are a son, Richard C., Long Wood, Fla.; 3 grandsons; a brother, Eldor of Fort Wayne; and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Mozena of Leo. Pettit Clifford C, 88, of Ligonier, died March 6, 2013, at Avalon Village in Ligonier. He was born on September 7, 1924, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to Cannes and Ida (Brause) Pettit. On December 21, 1948, he married Susan Anderson in Chicago, Ill. She died in January 2007. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University and  served his county in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.  He is remembered as the owner of Pettit Department Store in Ligonier, along with several other businesses. He served as the president of the Ligonier Industrial Development Association and served for over 50 years in the Ligonier Rotary Club.  He was also a member of Experimental Aircraft Association, the American Legion, and the Ligonier Presbyterian Church.  He is survived by 3 sons, Steven (Beth) Pettit of Goshen, David (Deb) Pettit of Angola and John Pettit of Ligonier; 2 brothers, Robert Pettit of Lafayette, La., and Marion Pettit of Lancaster, Mass.; 2 sisters, Jeann Rowell of Springfield, Mo., and Mary (Earl) Kocher of Bucyrus, Ohio; 7 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Pfaffman Mary, 87, widow of the late Valentine Pfaffman, died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roland Wisler, 931 S. Main St. from heart trouble. She was born in Germany Jan. 5, 1847, her maiden name having been Schlachter. Her husband died in April 1918. They resided in Germany after their marriage and about 40 years ago came to this country, locating on a farm in Noble County. They were the parents of 10 children, 5 of whom survive. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Pfaffman Naomi, 78, died in her home Friday, near Mt. Pleasant. She was the widow of the late Henry Pfaffman and the daughter of George and Traney McKee Penn and was born December 1, 1877, in Jefferson Twp. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church and at one time took an active part in all of its activities. She was a teacher in the Jefferson and Allen Twp Schools. Pfafman Byron J "Bud", 83, of Avilla, died December 31, 2013 at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville. He was born in York Township, Albion, Indiana on November 27, 1930, to Royal and Ethel (Harlan) Pfafman. He graduated from Avilla High School in May of 1950 and married Wanda Robart on August 16, 1950. In his early working days, he hauled milk for Allen Dairy. He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne. He was a lifetime Noble County farmer. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Vicki and Rick James of Fort Wayne; Kathy and Todd Hile of Kendallville; 2 sons, Gary and Elizabeth Pfafman of rural Kendallville, Gregg and Mary Pfafman of Auburn; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Kenny and Jane Pfafman of Bradenton, Florida, Max and Pat Pfafman of Kendallville, and a sister, Donna Kurtz of Albion. Pfafman Edwin, 76, of Seattle, Wash., died January 25, in a Yuma, Ariz. hospital. His brother Schiller B. Pfafman, died Feb. 2 in a Phoenix hospital. Edwin was born in Kendallville March 20, 1913, the son of Calvin and Mabel (Blount) Pfafman. A graduate of Tri-State University, he had been employed as a project engineer with the Boeing Co. from 1936 until retirement. Surviving are his wife, the former Venus Coggeshall; one son, Neil of Calif.; 2 daughters, Suzanne Higgins and Linda Princehouse, of Seattle; one sister, Margret Dean of Joliet, Ill.; and 5 grandchildren. Memorial services in Seattle March 20. Schiller was born in Arcadia, Ind. on November 20, 1908. He was a farmer in Noble County before relocating to Phoenix where he entered the drycleaning business. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Barhan; one son, Cloyd of Seattle; 2 daughters, Constance Kuckuck and Betty DiSano of Phoenix; a sister, Margaret Dean of Joliet, Ill.; and 5 grandchildren. Pfafman Robert Frederick, 81, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died March 6 in Mease Hospital, Countryside, Safety Harbor, Fla. from complications of pneumonia. He was born in Economy, Ind., June 23, 1907, the son of Calvin V. and Mabel (Blount) Pfafman. A former Kendallville resident, he was a graduate of Purdue University in electrical engineering and was a professor and dean of Indiana Institute of Technology. He was also a retired special agent with the FBI and Boeing Aircraft of Seattle, Wash. He received the Silver Beaver award in Boy Scouts of America. Pfefferkorn Norbert L "Chub", 63, Garrett, died Feb. 15 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. He had retired in May 1986 as a brakeman for the B&O Railroad with 20 years of service. Pfleidner Amanda Ann, daughter of W. A. and Catherine Bratton, was born near Edgerton, Ohio, March 29, 1864, and died at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Garrett, Ind., Dec. 12, 1937, aged 73 years, 8 months and 13 days. She had been seriously ill for only a few days but had been in failing health for many months. On August 3, 1884 she married James Pfleidner. They resided for three years near Edgerton, Ohio, and in 1887 moved to a farm in Swan Twp, where they reared their family. In 1925 they moved to Avilla. After the husband’s death in 1934, Mrs. Pfleidner lived alone for some time, but during the last two years has made her home most of the time with her children. The children who remain are R. T. Pfleidner and Mrs. Maude Renkenberger of Swan Twp, and Mrs. Pearle Hill of Jefferson Twp. There are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also one sister, Mrs. Mary Wines of Bryan, Ohio; and one brother, W. A. Bratton of West Plaines, Colorado. She has been a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church for many years. * 1937

She had been employed in private duty home health care for the past few years and was a member of Sugar Grove Church of God. In 1887, he with his family moved from Edgerton, Ohio to a farm in Swan Twp where they resided until 1925 when he and his wife moved to their late home in Avilla. She married Bill Pforter on September 6, 1975 in Albion. She was an Avon representative for 25 years; a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and Albion Eagles Auxliary. Phares Cecil V, 80, died Friday in his home at R. 1, Wawaka. He had lived in Elkhart Twp for 55 years as a farmer and was the husband of Frances (Ozier) Phares who died in 1968. He had been ill for 3 months. In 1896 he was born to Grant and Elizabeth (McWhinney) Phares in Weldon, Ill. He was married in Toledo, Ill. on Jan. 15, 1921. He was a veteran of WW I and a member of the Cosperville Baptist Church. He had resided in Ligonier for 19 years, coming from the Kimmell area. He was first married in Dec. 1915 in Weldon, Ill. to Fanny Long, who died Dec. 3, 1953. His second marriage was to Lula Mason on Jan. 5, 1957 in Fort Wayne. She died Jan. 23, 1979. Surviving are 2 sons, Dale, Millersburg, and Leland, Elkhart; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter and a stepson. A son preceded him in death. Phares Grant was born in DeWitt County, Ill. to Henry Clay and Nancy Phares Oct. 7, 1867, died on Dec. 28, 1943 at Luckey Hospital, Wolf Lake. In 1917 he moved with his family to a farm near Kimmell from Weldon, Ill., living there until he and his wife moved into Kimmell a few years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Kimmell and was trustee of Sparta Twp for one term. Phares Marvene, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Phares of R. 3, Ligonier, died of lung injuries suffered in a car-motorcycle accident Monday. The driver of the motorcycle on which she was riding attempted a U-turn in front of a car, causing the accident. She was born in LaGrange July 1, 1951 and lived all her life in Noble County. Pheister Lester Oliver died September 3, 2000 in Whitley County Hospital. He was born December 10, 1917 in Whitley County to Ellsworth and Saddie Aiken (Spear) Pheister. He retired after 21 years from Fruehoff Trailer Co. as a welder and assembler. He was a member of Big Lake Church of God and was a volunteer fireman. On October 18, 1957 in Fort Wayne he married Ardith Ilene Fruchey. She died June 17, 1987. On April 2, 1989 he married Mary M. Swafford Allen. She survives. Phend Cecil S, 97, died Saturday in Medco Center, Fort Wayne. He was born in Nappanee September 10, 1894 to Henry A. and Susie L. (Yarian) Phend. On May 5, 1916 he married Faith Reatha Miller. She died May 16, 1955. He was a veteran of WW I and for 27 years was employed by Harry Bollinger Tri Lake Construction Co., building public roads. In 1947 he moved to Merriam where he joined his son, Harold, in the operation of Phend's Merriam Garage. He retired in 1977. He was a member of Blue River Church of the Brethren where he was a Sunday School teacher. Phillips Al "Gary", husband of the former Goldie Truelove of Avilla, died Sunday at San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was a WW I veteran and he and Mrs. Phillips had made their home in California for several years. Phillips Alice, 85, Austin Texas, died Feb. 1, 1989. She was born in Thorncreek Twp, Whitley County, the daughter of Harvey and Gertrude Riley Waugh. She attended school at Collins and graduated from Wolf Lake with the class of 1922. She worked as a registered nurse in Chicago and Calif. before going to Okalahoma where she nursed with a Seminole Indian woman who had graduated with her from the Army School of Nursing at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. She married Paul John Phillips on Aug. 10, 1930 at Blue River Methodist Church, Whitley County. He died in1950. She was a member of the faculty of A & AM University of Okla. Phillips Sally Hicks, 75, of R. 4, Auburn, died Wednesday at McCray Hospital. Born in Johnson City, Tenn., April 26, 1910, she was the daughter of James and Laura (Lawson) Pierce. In 1942 in Painesville, Ky., she married Reece Phillips. She resided in this area 7 years, moving from W. Va. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Thelma VanHoose of Nolan, W.Va.; 5 sons, Vyless Hicks of Oakwood, Va., Dallas Hicks of Brimfield, Russell Hicks of Topeka, and Warren and Robert Hicks of Garrett; a sister, Rose McCoy; and 2 brothers, Mack and Odes, all of War, W. Phillips Stacy M, 1-day old daughter of Kevin and Susan (Hall) Phillips of R. 1, Cromwell, died Friday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born Thursday in Goshen Hospital. Surviving are her parents; grandparents, Ron and Doralee Phillips of Haughton, La., and Larry and Sharon Hall of Chesaning, Mich.; great-grandparents, Kenneth and Margaret Hall of New Lothrop, Mich., and Stan and Catherine Skornicka of Chesaning. Phillips Thurlow B died Dec. 30, 1892 at the residence of his father in Albion of consumption, aged 31 years and 30 days. He was the son of ex-county auditor C. B. Phillips Walter A, 53, died December 30 at his home in Milford where he had resided the past thirty-two years. He was born in Albion. He was a retired ticket agent for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, was a member of the Milford American Legion, the 40 & 8, and Veterans of WW I in Warsaw. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Farrington of Nappanee; three grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Joe Phillips, Avilla; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Truelove, Avilla, and Miss Mary Catherine Phillips, Garrett; and one brother, Horace of Fort Wayne. Phovemire Lila E, 79, died April 24, 2007 in York, Neb. She was born Oct. 8, 1927 in Merriam to James D. and Burnis Tucker. She married Ralph B. Phovemire on Jan. 3, 1945. He died Dec. 18, 1995. She worked for many years in Fort Wayne at Coverall Rental Service. Surviving are 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Philip and Ann Phovemire, Dennis Phovemire and Timothy and Christine Phovemire, all of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Hazel Tucker of Kendallville; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
