Nagy Barbara E, 63, died Friday in her
Blue Island, Ill. residence. She was born in Kendallville on September 23,
1931 to Willis and Amelia (Harding) Knott. She married Andrew Nagy, who
preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Christine Heileman of
Marion; a son, Michael Heileman of Poway, Calif.; 4 sisters, Dena Abbit of
Battle Creek, Mich., Mrs. Jerry (Reba) Kilborn of Union City, Mich., Irene
Chilcote of Pleasant Lake, and Shirley Meinberg of Rome City; and 5
grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home.

Nahler Paul M, 62, of Churubusco, died Nov. 15, 1988 in VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born
April 1, 1926 in Dubois County, the son of Jacob and Frieda (Kellam)
Nahler. On Dec. 16, 1972 in Churubusco he married Janis Hiscutt. He moved from
Marion to Churubusco in 1972 and was a WW II Navy veteran. He was a mason,
retiring in 1986 and formerly worked for James Jackson Construction in Bluffton.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Paul) Jarvis of Marion; 2 sons,
Joe of Fort Wayne, and James of Marion; 2 stepdaughters, Anna Marie McCreery of
Sturgis, Mich., and Mrs. Daniel (Linda) Stuckman of Syracuse; a stepson, Tim
Firestone of Roberson, Ill.; 4 sisters, Mrs. Harold (Ruth) Mickey of Dyer, Mrs.
John (Mary Jane) Arnold of Cairo, Egypt, Barbara Nahler of Detroit, Mich., and
Mrs. Norbert (Judy) Olinger of Huntingburg; 4 grandchildren. One brother

Nahrwold Dorothy M, 72, Kendallville, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital
in Fort Wayne. She was born in New Haven on May 3, 1927 to Fredrick and
Elizabeth (Knoepker) Nahrwold. She retired as a seamstress at Bennett
Clothing Co. in New Haven. Surviving are a sister, Gertrude Kinerk of
Avilla; and 2 brothers, Ted and Robert Nahrwold of Fort Wayne. Services in E. Harper & Son Funeral Home. Burial, Emanuel Lutheran

Nahrwold Elizabeth, 87, of R. 2, New Haven, died Friday in Parkview Hospital. A native of Cincinnati, she had resided in the
New Haven area 47 years and was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. She was the
mother of Mrs. Gertrude Kinerk of Avilla and is also survived by another
daughter, Miss Dorothy Nahrwold; two sons and 7 grandchildren. Services

Nahrwold Fred C, 79, New Haven, died Sunday at the Irene Byron
Hospital. A native of Germany, he came to Fort Wayne in 1899 and had resided
near New Haven since 1924. He was employed at the Bass Foundry, Fort Wayne, for
20 years. In 1943 he left the foundry and was employed by Casad Depot. He
retired in 1955. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven, and
active in affairs of the Fort Wayne Homing Pigeon Club. He and his wife,
Elizabeth, observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1956. Besides
the widow, surviving are two sons, Theodore W. and Robert, Fort Wayne; two
daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Kinerk, Avilla, and Miss Dorothy Nahrwold at home; a
brother, Ernest, Fort Wayne, 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services Thursday at New Haven Emanuel Lutheran Church. Burial, church

Nall Bonnie, 19, of Marion, but formerly of Swan Twp, died in the

Nangle Bernie, 32, died from injuries sustained in an accident in the
wood shop at Flint & Walling factory. He died at his home, 422 Wood St. He
was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Surviving are a widow and a
mother, Mrs. Clara Nangle. Funeral from the Evangelical Church of which

Nangle Mamie E, 101, formerly of Kendallville, died
Saturday in the Lutheran Home. She was born Jan. 10, 1883 in
Kendallville, the daughter of Alvin Perry and Georgianna (Branch) Russell. Her
husband, Bernard, died in 1913. The only surviving relative is a brother, Art
Russell of Kendallville. Graveside services today at Lake View

Nannenga Arthur A, 67, of Rome City, died Oct. 24, 2005 at Parkview Noble
Hospital. He was a union carpenter who retired in 1990. A U.S. Army
veteran, he was a member of F&AM 502 in Hebron, the Scottish Rite and the
Wheatfield Lions Club. He was born May 14, 1938 in Rensselaer to Andrew
and Iler Ohma (Bryant) Nannenga. On July 3, 1987 in Hazard, Ky., he
married Peggy Ritchie Sizemore. Surviving are his wife; a daughter and
son-in-law, Amy and Mike Stone of Wheatfield; a son, Tony of Ga.; 3
stepchildren; 6 brothers, George, Andrew, Robert, Charles and Donny of DeMotte
and Dan of Wis.; 2 sisters, Marine Hoffman of DeMotte and Verna of Calif.; 9
grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a
brother, Simon. Services Saturday at Liberty Freewill Baptist

Nape Marabelle, 77, of Columbia City, died Feb. 2, 2002 at Miller's Merry
Manor, Columbia City. She and her brother had been involved in a 2-car
accident on U.S. 30 about 2 weeks ago. She was born in Noble County on
Dec. 12, 1924 to Charles and Pearl (Clingerman) Rosenogle. She attended
Wolf Lake High School and married Harry L. Nape on April 29, 1958 in Michigan
City. She was employed at Alcoils, Columbia City 1973-1979 and retired
from Columbia City Nursing Home in Dec. 1986. She was a member of Eagles
Lodge 1906 and LOM 1063 auxiliaries, Columbia City. Surviving are a
stepdaughter; a brother, Walter Rosenogle of Columbia City; and a sister, Cecile
Roberson of Churubusco. Her husband died Jan. 28, 1996 at his home.
Also preceding her in death were 3 sisters, Madeline Roberson, Dorothy Arndt and
Helen Brunner; and 2 brothers, Richard and James Rosenogle. Funeral Feb. 5

Napier Charles M, 68, died May 2, 2007 at his Rome City home. He
was born March 3, 1939 in Hazard, Ky. to Sidney and Florence Napier.
He married Elsie Mae Mosley in September 1961 in Rowdy, Ky. He had been a
truck driver for Ace Hardware in Perrysburg, Ohio, for the past 30 years and was
a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post in Rome City. Surviving
are his wife; 3 daughters, Brenda Mullet and Linda Combs of Rome City and Angela
and Nathan McNeal of Wolcottville; 2 sons, Roy Mullett and Robbie Napier of Rome
City; 2 brothers, Ishmael Napier of Rome City and Knox Napier of Ky.; 9
grandchildren, Ashley Mullett, Vicki Smart, Toby and Devin Combs, Zayne and
Skyler McNeal, Stevie Gillespie, Haley and Hunter Napier; and 2
great-grandchildren, Logan Smart and Jasney Combs. He was preceded in
death by a son, Stevie Napier; 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Services Saturday

Napier Hiram Jr, 40, 124 W. High St., was killed Wednesday on the New
York thruway near Herkimer, N.Y., when he fell out of a tractor-trailer in which
he was riding. He had opened the door in an attempt to shut it more tightly when
he fell out of the moving vehicle. A native of Ky., he had lived in Kendallville
4 years and had been employed at the Redwood Drive-In as a grill cook. He
recently had been unemployed and planned to enter the Marion Hospital for
treatment. Surviving are the wife, Amaryllis; 2 daughters, Ellen and Regina. The
body was flown from New York to Jackson, Ky., where services will be held. +

Napier Ishmael, 76, of Rome City, died Nov. 16, 2008 in Parkview
Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was a truck driver for 34 years and an
owner-operator for 18 years. He served in the U.S. Marines during the
Korean Conflict. He was a member of Fellowship Bible Church near
Kendallville. He was born Nov. 7, 1932 in Ary, Kentucky to Sidney and
Florence (Combs) Napier. On Oct. 4, 1975 in Chicago he married Emily Jean
Stadick. Surviving are his wife; a son, Jesse of Rome City; 5
grandchildren, Sidney, Emily, Whitney, Madeline and Samantha; and a brother,
Knox of Louisville, Ky. He was preceded in death by a stepson; 6 brothers,
Charles, Shafter, Elmer, Sidney, Roger and Cleon; and 3 sisters, Jacqueline and
Onita Napier, and Ola Kline. Funeral Nov. 20 at Fellowship Bible

Napier Kenneth was born in Chicago Nov. 16, 1930. He died at his
home in Scottsdale, Ariz. Aug. 6, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Ruth,
and their 3 children, Cheryl Carlson and Bonnie Napier of Phoenix, Ariz., and
Keith Napier of Deland, Fla.; and 4 grandchildren. He served the First
Presbyterian Church in Kendallville 1968-1988. A memorial services was

Napier Shafter, 52, Ligonier, died Sunday
after being run over by a vehicle. He was born April 10, 1924 in Ary, Ky. to
Sidney and Florence (Combs) Napier. He was a 3-year area resident who moved here
from Chicago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Day, Chicago; a son, Michael
Harvey in the service; a sister, Mrs. David Trowbridge, Ligonier; 5 brothers,
Ishmael, Chicago, Cleon, Ligonier, Charles, Rome City, Roger, Ligonier, and
Knox, DeMott; and one grandchild. Funeral today in Salem Baptist Church.

Wayne. He was born in Knot County, Ky., January 27, 1961 to Charles and
Elsie (Mosley) Napier. He was a painter for Kennedy Painting in
Wolcottville. Surviving are 2 daughters, Haley Napier of Wolcottville and
Hunter Napier of Rome City; a son, Stevie Gillespie of Wolcottville; 3 sisters,
Brenda Mullett, Linda Combs and Angela McNeal of Rome City; 2 brothers, Robbie

Nartker Clarence W "Allah", 74, of
Kendallville, died Wednesday in McCray Hospital. He was born in
Kendallville Dec. 1, 1911 to Frank and Mary (Wellens) Nartker and was a lifetime
Kendallville resident. On April 15, 1942 in Kendallville he married Edythe
Franze. An Army veteran of WW II, he retired in 1972 as a letter carrier for the
U. S. Postal Service. He was a 1929 graduate of Kendallville High School and a
member of the basketball team that went to state in 1927. He was a member of the
Immaculate Conception Church, lifetime member of BPOE No. 1194, American Legion
Post 86, VFW Post 749 and former member of Lake View Cemetery board. Surviving
are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. James H. (Marianna) Reick of Kendallville; 2
sons, Richard E. of Fort Wayne and Dennis M. of Sydney, Australia; a brother,
John of Jacksonville, Fla.; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. A
brother and 6 sisters preceded him in death. Services Saturday in

Nartker Edythe Mae, 86, of Kendallville, died April 4, 20024 at Parkview
Noble Hospital. She had worked in food service at McCray Hospital for 8
years and retired in 1975 as director of food service at East Noble High
School. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Harvest
House, Ladies of the Elks, American Legion Post 86 Ladies Auxiliary and the Live
and Learn Extension Homemakers Club. She was born June 25, 1917 in
Kendallville to William F. and Edythe A. (Diamond) Franze. On April 15,
1942 in Kendallville she married Clarence Nartker. He died Sept. 17,
1986. Surviving are 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Gail of Fort
Wayne and Dennis of Kendallville; a daughter and son-in-law, Marianna and Jim
Reick of Rome City; a brother, Frank Franze of Auburn; a sister, Faye Creager of
Auburn; 5 grandchildren, Beth and Dean Hoffman, Babette Weick, Natalie and
Michael Axel, Brett Nartker and Derrick Reick; 7 great-grandchildren, Daniel
Haisley, Lucas Weick, Hailey Hoffman, Drew and Trevor Sparkman, Jordan and
Benjamin Axel. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Richard, Everett,
William, Herman and Devereau Franze; and 3 sisters, Marie Hosler, Ruth Doub and

Nartker Ethel M, 81, of Kendallville, died Wednesday in Miller’s Merry Manor, LaGrange. Born at Wolf Lake Nov. 28,
1906, she was the daughter of Edward and Edith (Adair) Wolfe. On June 11, 1929
in Kendallville she married Lawrence William Nartker who died in July 1977. A
lifetime area resident, she was a secretary at McCray Refrigerator and J. C.
Penney. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iota Tau
Associate I chapter of Sigma Beta Sorority and McCray Hospital Auxiliary.
Surviving is a son, William J. of Kendallville; a daughter-in-law, Cheri L.
Nartker of Kendallville; and 3 grandchildren. A brother preceded her in death.

Nartker Janice, 58, of 733 Richmond St., died Saturday in
Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born in Missouri on Oct. 28, 1922, she was the
daughter of Benjamin and Rosa (Stegall) Wiles. In October 1948 in Louisville,
Ky., she married John E. Nartker. She moved from Okla. to Kendallville 40 years
ago. She had been employed by McCray Hospital for 22 years and was a member of
Farmerettes Extension Homemakers’ Club. Surviving are her husband; her mother
in Chelsa, Okla.; 4 daughters, Mrs. Patricia Rachaels, Kendallville, Mrs. Neil
(Susan) Stacks, Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Gary (Lois)
West, Indianapolis; one son, David, Rome City; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edith Pederson
and Mrs. Bonita Nelson of Portland, Ore.; 4 brothers, James, Portland, Benjamin,
Fairfax, Va., David, Chelsa, and Bob, Vinita, Okla.; and 6 grandchildren.

Nartker John, 83, died Sunday in Life Care Center, Orange Park,
Fla. He was born in Kendallville October 25, 1915 to Frank and Mary (Wellens)
Nartker. On October 31, 1948 in Kendallville he married N. Janice
Wiles. She died in 1981. He had lived in Fla. since 1986, having
retired from Northern Indiana Fuel & Light in 1981. He had been
supervisor of maintenance in McCray Hospital for 16 years. Surviving are a
son, David of Kendallville; 4 daughters, Susan Stocks of Orange Park, Lois Jean
Bowers of Pueblo West, Colo., Patricia Rice and Barbara Nartker; 8 grandchildren
and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 6 sisters and 2
brothers. Funeral Thursday in Berhalter Hutchins Funeral Home.

Nartker Lawrence "Bill", 68, 604 W. Williams St., died
Monday in the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, during open heart surgery. Born
in Kendallville April 22, 1909, he was the son of Frank and Mary (Wellens)
Nartker. He married Ethel Wolfe June 11, 1929 in Kendallville. He was a lifetime
resident of Kendallville and a retired sales manager for Kendallville Foundry.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Survivors include the
wife; a son, William J., Kendallville; two sisters, Mrs. Thad Hall, Howe, Mrs.
John Kick, Auburn; 2 brothers, Clarence and John of Kendallville; and 3
grandchildren. Funeral Thursday in Immaculate Conception Church. Burial,

Nash Ann, Kendallville, died at her winter home in
St. Cloud, Fla. Saturday. She was the wife of former Kendallville
mayor, Ralph Nash. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Lyman (Linda)
Holbrook, R. 3, Kendallville; a son, Kenneth, St. Cloud; one sister; one
brother; and two grandchildren. Funeral and burial will be in St. Cloud Tuesday.

Nash Gladys E, 66, 202 N. Orange St. died Tuesday in
McCray Hospital. She was born May 27, 1905 in San Francisco to George C. and
Emma (Linde) Miller and was married June 8, 1929 in Chicago to Dr. Justin R.
Nash. He died in 1965. She moved to Albion from South Bend in 1931 and was a
member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and Whift Club. She
is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Dale (Linda) Shultz, Albion; a son, Ronald,
South Bend; a sister, Verna Lee, East Peoria, Ill.; and 9 grandchildren. One
brother preceded her in death. Funeral Thursday at Asbury United

Nash Justin R of Albion, died Nov. 24, 1965 at
Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne from uremia. He was born in Belvedere,
Ill., Aug. 8, 1901 and was aged 64 years, 3 months and 16 days. After serving
his internship at South Bend, he came to Albion in 1931 and had practiced his
profession here for 34 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William T.
Nash. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one daughter, Mrs. Dale (Linda) Shultz
of R. 3, Albion, and one son, Ronald of South Bend; one brother, Sidney W. of Belvedere;
and 8 grandchildren. He was a member of the Albion First Methodist Church,
Masonic Lodge, Rotary International, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne,
Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters of Fort Wayne, Noble County Historical Society,
Fort Wayne Historical Society, Noble County Medical Association, Indiana State

Nash Ronald Lee, 61, died Saturday in Community Hospital in Mishawaka
from cardiac arrest. He was born November 26, 1936 in Kendallville to Dr.
Justin Russell and Gladys (Miller) Nash. On April 25, 1959 in Albion he
married Mary Crofoot. A self-employed distributor, he was a member of
Light of Life Church in South Bend and the Mishawaka Pilots Club.
Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Chris Mackin of
South Bend, and Jennifer and Brad Kamman of Montevallo, Ala.; 2 sons and a
daughter-in-law, Gregory L. and Carol Nash of Granger, and Jonathan Nash of
Mishawaka; a sister, Linda Shultz of Albion; and 4 grandchildren. Funeral

Nason Robert A, 72, died Dec. 21 in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was
a resident of Garrett the past 45 years. Born April 15, 1908 in Chicago, he was
the son of Walter and Florence (Munson) Nason. He married Mary Linton Jan. 10,
1963 in Avilla. He had practiced medicine in Garrett for 43 years before his
retirement in 1978. He had served in the U. S. Army Air Force in WW II, was a
member of the Garrett American Legion, VFW, 40 and 8 Club, Elks, Eagles, and the
Indiana Medical Society. Survivors include his wife; a son, Bruce, and a
daughter, Nancy Drabek, both Spring, Tex.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Harve (Marilee)

Naugler Allan J, 78, died Monday at his Syracuse residence. He was
born July 8, 1917 in Brewer, Maine to Kenneth and Jemima (Simmons) Naugler. On May 4, 1940 in Bangor, Maine, he married Eleanor
Skillins. He attended the University of Maine and retired in 1991 as owner
and operator of Naugler-Titus Saw Mill in Wolf Lake. He served in the U.S.
Army during WW II. He was a member of Wolf Lake United Methodist Church,
Gideons International, Masonic Lodge No. 83 in Bangor, Scottish Rite and Mizpah
Temple in Fort Wayne. Surviving are his wife; a son, Stephen of Cromwell;
a daughter, Mrs. David (Trenna) Titus of Cromwell; a brother, Earl of Ramsey,
N.J.; a sister, Marguerite MacKenzie of Saco, Maine; and 8 grandchildren.

Naugler Eleanor F, 90, died July 16, 2007 at Miller's Merry Manor in
Syracuse. She had served as secretary for Naugler-Titus Sawmill in Wolf
Lake. A 1935 graduate of Bangor High School, she attended the Maine School
of Commerce in Bangor. She was a member of Wolf Lake United Methodist
Church and was involved with Gideon's Auxiliary Noble County Camp. She was
born April 14, 1916 in Booth Bay Harbor, Maine to Augustus and Iva (Stairs)
Skillins. She married Allan J. Naugler on May 4, 1940 in Bangor,
Maine. He died Oct. 9, 1995. Surviving are a son and
daughter-in-law, Stephen and Jane Naugler of Cromwell; a daughter and
son-in-law, Trenna and David Titus of Warsaw; 8 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son,

Naugler Richard A, 48, died unexpectedly Saturday in Clarendon Hospital,
Manning, S.C., from a heart attack. He was born December 17, 1943 in
Brewer, Maine, the son of Allan J. and Eleanor (Skillins) Naugler. On June
8, 1991 in Summerton he married Cynthia Hilton. He was a former Clarendon
County sheriff's deputy and most recently a desk clerk for Knights Inn in
Summerton. He was a Vietnam Conflict veteran and a 1968 graduate of Husson
College in Bangor Maine. Surviving are his wife; his parents in Syracuse;
a daughter, Danielle Jackson of Spring Lake, N.C.; a son, Richard of Summerton;
a sister, Mrs. David (Trenna) Titus of Cromwell; and a brother, Steven of

Nave James H, 66, Ligonier, died Monday
in Goshen Hospital. He was born March 5, 1902 in Bristol, Tenn., and had been a
resident of the Ligonier community for the past 22 years, moving from Detroit,
Mich. He was employed as a supervisor at Essex Wire Corp. He was a member of the

Indiana Conference, closed his ministry of a quarter of a century Oct. 11 in
Warsaw, Ind. He was the son of a minister, the Rev. Jabez Neal and Mary Bowman
Neal. He was married to Laura E. Johns 41 years ago Sept. 28. Surviving are a

Neal Claude Bernard, son of William H. and Olla Jaquays Neal, was
born Nov. 18, 1895 in Jefferson Twp and died Jan. 3, 1929, aged 33 years, 1
month and 16 days. He attended school in Albion and graduated with the class of
1914. He enlisted the 6th of May, 1917, for service in the World War
and was honorably discharged Aug. 16, 1919. He married Tina Lane of Ord, Neb. on
Aug. 14, 1924. They had one daughter, Claudine. He is survived by

Neal Donna I, 82, died Tuesday in McCray Hospital. She was born
December 2, 1912 in Noble County to Glenn and Lesta (Henney) Neal.
She was a retired principal with more than 40 years as an educator at Mary Raber
Elementary School in Columbia City. She was a member of Asbury United
Methodist Church in Albion. Surviving are nieces and nephews. A

Neal Evelyn M, 83, died September 4, 2000 at Shepherd of the Hill
home. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and OES No.
122. She was born October 22, 1916 in Swan Twp, Noble County, to John W.
and Ada H. (Grocock) Bolton. She married Paul R. Neal on October 1,
1934. He died September 9, 1997. Surviving are 3 sons, Reginald of
Kendallville, Richard of Sequim, Wash., and David of Waterloo; one daughter,
Joyce Brumbaugh of Columbia City; one brother, James Bolton of Big Rapids,

Neal Glenn W, the son of William and Olla Jaquays Neal, was born
near Albion on Dec. 17, 1892, and died Jan. 8 at the
Epworth Hospital in South Bend. Most of his life was spent near Albion, himself
and family having moved to Cromwell a little more than a year ago and moving
from there to South Bend in the early part of last Oct. He married Lesta
Henney in June of 1913. They had a
daughter, Donna, and a son, Maynard, both living at home. He had been preceded
in death by his mother and brother, Claude. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Donna, his son Maynard of South Bend, and William, his father of

Neal Iva P, 79, was born March 4, 1894 in Payne, Ohio to Manuel and Ila
Quinn Diehl. She had been a resident of Avilla most of her life, but had
resided at the Lutheran Home in Kendallville the last five years. She was a
previous owner of The Avilla News, having sold to the late Bernard Fischer in
1943. She is survived by her husband, Morris; a son, Myron Richards, Fort
Wayne; two stepsons, Paul Neal, Kendallville, and Don Neal, Lansing, Mich.; a
stepdaughter, Mary Bishop, Angola; several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Ford, Charles and Alvie Diehl

Neal Lesta H, 96, of Albion, died Tuesday at the Kendallville
Lutheran Home. She was born Nov. 24, 1892, the daughter of Jeriel and
Lucetta (Hines) Henney. On June 4, 1912 in Noble County, she married
Glenn Neal, who died in 1930. A retired school teacher, she taught 31 years in
Jefferson and York Twp schools. She was a 50-year member of both OES and Rebekah
Lodge, Asbury United Methodist Church, Indiana State and Noble County Retired
Teachers Associations. Surviving are a daughter, Donna; and a daughter-in-law,
Margaret Neal, both of Albion; 3 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 2

McCray Hospital. He lived at Albion. He was born Dec. 24,

Margaret Schmidt Aug. 15, 1940 in Kendallville. He was an employee of Noble
County REMC and served in the U. S. Navy during WW II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of American Legion Post 246, Albion, VFW 6413, 40 & 8, and
treasurer of Noble County Training Center. Survivors include his mother; his

Neal Morris, 100, died March 3 in DeKalb Hospital. He was born April 11,
1886 at St. Paul, the son of John D. and Mary (Bumpus) Neal. In 1907 he married

R & I Railroad 46 years ago and was a member of Calvary United Methodist
Church in Avilla and a member of the Winchester Masonic Lodge, F&AM Lodge

St. Paul, Ind. on Feb. 4, 1911 to Morris and Neva (Ward) Neal. On October
1, 1934 in Winchester, he married Evelyn Bolton. He retired in 1973 as a
machinist for General Electric Co. He was a member of Faith United
Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge F&AM 276 and Noble Chapter 122 OES.

Neal Reginald Morris "Reggie", 70, of Rome City, died Dec. 26,
2005 at Hickory Creek of Kendallville. A 1953 Kendallville High School
graduate, he served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired from the
Kendallville Post Office after 18 years of service. He was a member of
Avilla Masonic Lodge and F&AM Kendallville Lodge 276, VFW Post 2749, Rome
City American Legion Post 381, Disabled American Veterans, Wolcottville Lions
Club, and Wolcottville United Methodist Church. He was born July 5, 1935
in Avilla to Paul R. and Evelyn M. (Bolton) Neal. He married Gladys A.
White on April 3, 1956 in Andover, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife;
a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Gabrielle of Rome City; 2 daughters and a
son-in-law, Deborah and Ron Wallen of Rome City and Dawn Neal of Kendallville; 2
brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Linda of Richland, Wash., and David and

Neal Robert J, 53, Knapp Lake, died Aug. 14, 1987 at Community Hospital
in Indianapolis. He died as a result of injuries received Friday when a
go-cart at the Marion County fairgrounds went out of control, ran up a straw
bale and chain link fence retaining wall and landed on him. He was employed by
Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne and was a member of Columbia City Eagles Lodge.
Born in Switzerland County, Ind. to Oren F. and Thelma M. Courtney Neal, he
married Ruth I. Chivington in Fort Wayne on May 9, 1953. The Neals moved to
Knapp Lake in 1973. Surviving are his father of Fort Wayne; his wife; one son,
Robert F., Cromwell; 4 daughters, Mrs. Noreen Thompson, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Kelly

Neaman Bernard L "Barney", 67, died Wednesday at his residence
on Storey Lake near Ashley. He was born August 15, 1925 in Burr Oak, Mich.
to Delmar and Julia (Cooper) Neaman. He graduated from Coldwater High
School. On September 4, 1943 he married Irene Fulk in Coldwater,
Mich. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II in Iwo Jima and
was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from the Kendallville post office
in 1985 as a clerk-supervisor and was a member of the former Center Chapel
United Methodist Church near Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; a son,
Lyle of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Terry) Perkins of Hudson; 2
half-brothers, Jay Cleveland of Atlanta, Ga., and Clyde Cleveland of

She had worked as a volunteer at the Gene Stratton Porter home on Sylvan

Insurance Co. and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne, Masonic
Lodge, Rome City, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine Temple and former member of the
Mizpah Shrine Chanters. He was preceded in death in 1979 by his wife, the former

Fort Wayne most of her life, died Feb. 27 in Lawton Nursing Home.

daughter of Frank and Jenny Jones. She married Ralph R. Neely Sept. 26, 1919,
and he died in 1972. She resided at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annabell
Baughman and was a former resident of R. 2, Kendallville. Surviving are four
other daughters, Lucile Fender, Waterloo, Bertha Covey, Butler, Ella Mae Powell,

Neer Uriah T was born in Portage County, Ohio May 2, 1838. When 6 years
of age he, with his father’s family, moved to Williams County, Ohio where he
spent 21 years of his life. On May 13, 1863 he married Catharine R. Murphy and
in 1856 they removed to Kendallville. They had 2 daughters, Mrs.
Julia Weaver and Miss Mable of this city. Here he lived until his death, April
20, aged 56 years 11 months and 18 days. His parents and 4 brothers preceded him
in death. Four brothers, one sister, his wife and daughter and a grandchild,
Jessie Weaver, are left. He was a teacher for 35 winters,
working at his trade as a carpenter during the summers. Funeral at the

Neidig Helen Naomi, 82, of Kendallville, died April 2, 2008 at Shepherd
of the Hill nursing home. She had worked at Kendallville Laundry and at
Lyall Electric in Ashley and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in
Kendallville. She was born in Kendallville on April 11, 1925 to William
and Edna (Reichard) Kimpel. She married Roy Alfred Neidig on April 24,
1949 at St. John Lutheran Church. He died May 13, 1990. Surviving
are a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Roger Maxwell of Kendallville; a
grandson, Sean Maxwell; a granddaughter and her spouse, Carrie and Hans

Thursday at McCray Hospital. He was the son of Frank and Margaret

Neikerk Dorothy E, 77, a former resident of Albion, died July 1, 1986 in
Bryan Ohio, where she had resided since 1925. The daughter of Eva Sweet and
Anson Coats, she attended the Albion School and in 1925 married Leland Neikirk.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bryan. Survivors include her
husband; 2 daughters, Betty Durham of Warren, Ind., and Jackie Oldham of Novato,
Calif.; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Edith Sherman of
Bryan, Ohio, Lutie Campbell of South Bend, and Luella Ross of Avilla. She was

Home. Born Oct. 3, 1889 in Appleton, Mo., she was the daughter of Cassius and
Eva (Reid) Hinkley. On Dec. 12, 1917 in Chicago, she married Arthur Nelson,
who died in 1964. She was a former employee of Kendallville News-Sun, a member
of Columbus, Ohio Women’s Club, and the Shriner’s Auxiliary. She is survived
by 2 sons, Rodger of Fort Wayne, and Travers of Sarasota, Fla.; 2 grandchildren

Nelson Homer, 45, Indianapolis, a former resident of Ligonier, died April 24. A native of Ligonier, he was born Oct. 22, 1931. He was a plastic
department supervisor of the RCA Corporation, Indianapolis, and was a member of
the East 38th St. Christian Church there. He was a coach of St. Alban’s
Little League, a member of the RCA Pin Club, the Englewood Masonic Lodge, the
Society of Plastic Engineers and worked with the Cub Scout program. He was an
Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and a 1962 graduate of Indiana

Nelson Mary died Friday in the LaGrange County Hospital from acute
leukemia. Surviving are the husband, Don D.; her father of Butler; a brother,
Carl McKinley of Metz; 2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Clark Babcock and Mrs. Everett
Miller; 4 grandsons; one granddaughter, and 2 great-grandchildren. Mary Esther,
daughter of Abner and Pearl Stultz McKinley, was born Nov. 5, 1908 in
Springfield Twp. She was a graduate of the Springfield Twp High School and
Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo. She was superintendent of the
old LaGrange County Hospital for 4 years. She was a member of the Methodist
Church and the OES at LaGrange. She and Mr. Nelson were married April 17, 1942.
Since her health would no longer permit nursing, she had assisted her husband in

Nelson Minnie, 97, a resident of Ligonier, died Tuesday in
Fountainview Nursing Home in Goshen. Born June 30, 1881 in Ottawa, Ill., she was
the daughter of Torkel and Helen (Pearson) Erickson. She married Thomas M.
Nelson, who died in 1952. She had been a Ligonier resident since 1913 when she
moved from Ill. She was a member of the Ligonier United Methodist Church.

1931. She died in 1959. He married Vera B. Taylor on Feb. 10, 1962 in

Nesbit Flossie, 91, (b.1-12-1891- d.5-24-1982) who lived many
years on R. 2, Albion, died Monday at Strawberry Village Nursing Home. She was
born in 1891 to John and Gertrude Ballard Nesbit. She had lived in the Albion
area since 1911 and taught piano to several generations of area residents. Her
home was near what was originally called Sand Lake. The access was through her
barnyard. The lake is now called Williams Lake and on the lots she sold from her
farm are many nice homes. Byron Nesbit, a nephew of Albuquerque, N.M., is the

Nesbitt Bessie M, 52, of near Wawaka, ended her own life last Friday at her home by shooting herself through the right
temple. Funeral was held Sunday at the Church of the Brethren
southeast of Wawaka. Burial, South Milford Cemetery. She had been mentally ill
for a year. Arising before daybreak, she picked up a .32 caliber revolver,
walked to the rear of her home, and then fired two bullets, one through the
temple, and one through the left breast. Through super-human efforts,
authorities believe, she ran toward the road and fell dead near the mailbox
where she was found by two sons, Melvin and Harold, who with their father
instituted a search for her. She was a native of the Wawaka community, born the
daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann Wygant. Following her marriage in 1907 to Claude
Nesbitt, the couple resided in Kendallville for 3 years, the remainder of her
life being spent in the Wawaka vicinity. Surviving are the husband; five sons,
Merton, Harold and Melvin at home, Delbert and Donald of Wawaka; a half-sister

husband, Ralph Hollar, died April 23, 1989. She married Norbert G. Nesbitt
on Dec. 5, 1956 in Angola. He died May 16, 1980. Surviving and 3

9, 1921 in Chicago, Ill. He was a Kendallville resident 56 years, coming from
Hammond. He was a retired cabinet maker for McCray Refrigerator Co., a 50-year
member of the Masons, a member of McCray 20-Year Club, and American Legion Post

He died in 1975. She had worked as a press operator at Essex Wire in

Ness Lloyd William, 64, was dead on arrival February 28, 1994 at Whitley
County Hospital from an apparent heart attack. He was born June 22, 1929
in Whitley County to Edward P. and Florence (Harkenrider) Ness. He married
Patricia Wessels on April 28, 1951 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A
graduate of Purdue University, he was a guidance counselor and principal in
Ligonier High School and Cromwell Elementary School from 1952 until 1975, as
well as a farmer all of his married life. He was due to retire from the
post office in April. He served in the U.S. Army in 1951 as a supply
sergeant. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ligonier,
the Elks and Lions clubs and American Legion Post 243 in Ligonier.
Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Jerry "Pete" and Jon of Cromwell; 5
daughters, Mrs. Fred (Jane) Bauer and Mrs. Greg (Julie) Leedy of Cromwell, Mrs.
Bill (Jackie) Fries of Columbia City, Mrs. Mark (Jeanna) Hagen of Carrollton,

Center, Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient since February 3. He was

Catherine (Gordon) Nestel. On October 20, 1929 he married Ruth Beavers in
Churubusco. She survives. A lifetime Churubusco area resident, he
had been a carpenter for Churubusco Woodworking Co. as a young man. He

Neufer Charles F, a former Noble County citizen, died at Goshen last
Saturday. He was born in this county in 1862, the son of Samuel Neufer, who
lately died of consumption at his old home near Wawaka. After graduating at
DePauw University in 1884, he went to Goshen. After reading law for several
years, he began the practice of his chosen profession. The new Hotel Neufer was
one of his ventures, which is said to be a paying investment. He was buried at
Wawaka on Monday last by the Masons, of which order he was a member. + No date
Neufer Emelie was born Sept. 10, 1863 in Albion and died
Dec. 11, 1919. On Nov. 10, 1886 she married Joseph F. Neufer, and they had 3 children, Freddie, who
died at three brief months; Berniece, now Mrs. Bortner who lives on a
farm at the edge of Albion; and Vernon who resides with his family near
Brimfield. Until 6 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Neufer and family lived in the
vicinity of the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ and she was a member of that
church. Since that time they have lived in Albion. Her parents were Frederick
and Margaret (Miller) Gappinger and her mother still survives her with one
sister, Mrs. F. S. Waltman; and five brothers, John, Frank, Edward, Ervin and

married Irwin A. Neufer in Hillsdale, Mich. They moved to the family farm
in Swan Twp, Noble County, in 1936. She was employed at Container
Corporation in Fort Wayne for 15 years, leaving to care for her husband when he
became ill. He died March 13, 1980. She was a member of Immaculate
Conception Church at Ege. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Erin
"Mick") Schenher of rural Churubusco; 6 grandchildren, Nancy Green,

York Twp on May 6, 1891, of consumption. He was 63 years, 8 months and 10 days,
born in Lancaster County, Pa. Aug. 26, 1827. He resided in Ohio for a while,
then came to Indiana and on Feb. 10, 1853 was married to Mary A. Eshelman.
They had nine boys and four girls, 7 sons and 2 daughters
remaining, the mother having preceded him in death. In his

was born in Fort Wayne to Lawrence H. and Dollie M. Hooks Heiny. She was
employed at Walker Mfg. Co. in Ligonier. She moved to Noble County from Fort
Wayne in 1966. Surviving are her parents in Albion; one son, Shanon Amerosa of
Albion; 3 daughters, Angela Grabil of Fort Wayne, Amanda and Amber Nevil of
Albion; and a brother, Lawrence Heiny of Albion. There was a graveside service

Nevil Clifford F, 54, R. 4, Albion, a retired employee of American Hoist
Co., died Nov. 1 at his home on Ind. 109 north of Big Lake from a
heart attack. He was born Nov. 28, 1930 at Geneva, a son of Omer and Edith Mann
Nevil. He was raised in Geneva and graduated from Geneva High School. He was
first employed at Franklin Electric Co. in Bluffton and later the Fruehauf Co.
in Fort Wayne. In 1948 he was married to Patty Jean Agler. They moved to R. 4,
Albion 28 years ago. She died in 1979. After moving to Noble County he was first
employed at the J. I. Case Co. His retirement due to his health was from the
American Hoist Co. His memberships included the Eagles Lodge. He was married to
Carol Davis, and on Oct. 25, 1985 he was married to Evelyn Mueller. Surviving
are his wife; 5 sons, Mickey of R. 8, Columbia City, Clifford Allen of
Fort Wayne, Don and Ronnie of R. 4, Albion, and Rick of Columbia City; 2
daughters, Mrs. Marsha Kiester of R. 1, Kimmell, and Brenda of
Churubusco; 2 brothers, Gerald and Gail; 4 sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Franks, Mrs.
Maxine Georgi, Mrs. Irene Williamson and Mrs. Geraldine Burgman; and 14

New Alisha R, 17, died March 10, 2007 in an automobile accident on C.R.
11A in DeKalb County. She was born December 13, 1989 in
Kendallville. Surviving are her mother, Sharon R. New of Garrett; her
father, Danny R. Rose of Emmalena, Ky.; 2 brothers, Roger K. New of Garrett and
Danny K. Rose of Emmalena; and a sister, Angel Rose of Emmalena. She was a

Newbauer Anna, 81, died at her home in Fort Wayne on November 10.
She was born on August 1, 1868 and the widow of John Newbauer. They made
their home in Garrett. After the death of Mr. Newbauer sixteen years ago
she moved to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Walter Beckstein in Fort Wayne. Other
survivors are a daughter, Mrs. John Zymslony also of Fort Wayne; 9 grandchildren, including Wilma, Velma and James Fischer; and
3 great-grandchildren. Services last Saturday at the Fort Wayne
Cathedral and burial was in the Garrett Cemetery. ~ 11-17-1949
Newbauer Helen Aileen, 27, of Garrett, died of cancer Friday in the
Sacred Heart Hospital. Surviving are the husband, Joseph; three children, Karen,
Joseph Jr. and Marilyn, all at home; her father, John Bolton; four brothers,
James and John of Big Rapids, Michigan, and Herschel and Marion both of
Kendallville; three sisters, Mrs. Paul Neal and Mrs. Jack Frehse of Kendallville
and Mrs. Edward Pence of Garrett. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, where rites were held Tuesday morning. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
She was born July 7, 1923, at Avilla, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bolton.

Newcomer Marianne, 67, of Ligonier, died June 9, 2009 at her home.
She was born March 10, 1942 in Brookville, Indiana to Gilbert and Doris (Asply)
Hazlewander. She married Lyle Newcomer on June 6, 1998 in Ligonier.
She was employed for over 21 years with Parker Hannifin in Ligonier and was a
member of OES. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Michael Lamar of
Huntington and Matthew and Patricia Lamar of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Jennifer
and Lyle Newcomer; 3 stepdaughters; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a
sister, Alice Winkler of New Paris, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a
brother, Donald Hazlewander. Funeral June 13 at Stone's Hill Community

90, of Fort Wayne, died January 11, 2014, at Parkview Regional Medical
Center in Fort Wayne. He
was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 24, 1923, to Clarence and Nellie
(McKelvogue) Newell. He graduated from Washington
University in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U.S.
Army Air Corps from 1943-45. He married Betty Jean Brown on June
16, 1954. He was a publications engineer at
Magnavox in Fort Wayne for 22 years. Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Daniel and Lori Newell of Lake of the Woods
near Hudson and Michael and Amber Newell of Kendallville; 3 grandchildren,
Jessica and Chris Stewart, Jonathan and Grace

Newkirk Betty Eileen, 76, of New Haven, died April 19, 2008 at Parkview
Hospital in Fort Wayne. She had worked at Indiana Bell as a service
representative in Kendallville for 5 years and had been a volunteer at Parkview
Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority. She
was born June 1, 1931 in Kendallville to A. W. and Margaret G. (Henderson)
Scott. She married Jack D. Newkirk on June 27, 1953 in Kendallville.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Robert Clark of
Fort Wayne; a son, Jeffrey of Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren, Scott, Jessica and
Alex Newkirk, Megan and Madison Clark; and 2 brothers, Raymond of Kendallville

Newkirk Jesse E, 74, of Kendallville, died Wednesday in Fort Myers Community Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla., from a heart
attack suffered Tuesday. Born Jan. 5, 1906 in Bedford, he was the son of
Kirby and Henrietta (Radcliff) Newkirk. On July 26, 1924 in Brown County, he
married Ruby George. He had been a lumber man his entire adult life. He left
Denver, where he managed a lumber company, in 1941 and moved to Kendallville to
manage Kendall Lumber & Coal Inc. He and his son, Jack, later purchased
Kendall Lumber. He had been semi-retired the past few years, He was a member of
Trinity Church United Methodist, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, Indiana Lumber
& Builders Association, Kendallville Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. He was
the second Indiana recipient of the national Boys Clubs of America medallion and
was instrumental in organizing the funding and building of the Kendallville
Foundation for Youth. Surviving are his wife; his mother in Sacramento, Calif.;
a son, Jack D. New Haven; 3 sisters, Mrs. Lea Burgess of Orleans, Mrs. Mary
Crawford of Yakima, Wash., and Mrs. Helen Dalton of Bedford; 2 brothers, James
of Kent, Wash., and Warren of Sacramento; and 2 grandchildren. Funeral

Newkirk Ruby, 93, died December 4, 2000 at the Cedars in
Leo-Cedarville. She was born to Virgil and Lydia (Lamming) George on July
22, 1907 in Greene County. She married Jesse Newkirk in 1927 in
Bedford. He died January 30, 1980. She lived in Kendallville
1941-1997. She is survived by one son, Jack of New Haven; 2 grandchildren,
Jeffrey Newkirk and Tina Clark; and 5 great-grandchildren. Two brothers

Newlin Jesse was born Jan. 1, 1823 in Westmoreland County, Pa. and died
at his residence in Kendallville March 29, 1905, aged 82 years, 2 months and 28
days. He married Diana Varner March 31, 1846. They had four children,
John of Indian Territory; Elijah of our city; Sarah Bell, 3 miles south
of Kendallville; and Mary E. Huntley of Louisiana, Mo., the youngest, who
died April 17, 1900. He had been a resident of Kendallville and vicinity since
1866, was a mason by trade and followed his calling until 5 years ago when he
met with an accident which robbed him of his strength. He was a member of the

Saturday at her daughter’s residence. She was about 81 years of age and had
been blind or nearly so for 20 years. Her remains were taken to Wolcottville for

Sturgis Hospital. Born Sept. 29, 1896 in Kendallville, she was the daughter of
John and Emma (Wortinger) Uhl. She married Glen C. Newman in Albion. He
died March 11, 1967. She resided in Kendallville until 1927. She had been
employed by Freeman’s Mfg. and Sturgis Newport. She was a member of the First
Baptist Church in Sturgis and the AARP. Survivors are 3 daughters, Mrs. Hubert
(Beatrice) Smith of Howe, Mrs. Warren (Fern) Belt of San Antonio, Texas,

Newman Elizabeth Jean ‘‘Betty’’, 86, of Kendallville died on
Monday, January 19, 2009, at Parkview Noble Hospital. She born in
Kendallville on December 26, 1922, to Charles S. and Louise Amelia (Fritz)
Haverfield. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1941 and
married Donald Lee Newman on November 28, 1943, at the First Presbyterian Church
in Kendallville. He died August 28, 1983. She hadworked at Domex in Kendallville from 1974-86. She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church in Kendallville and was the Noble County Vice Chairman
of the Central Democratic Committee and was a member of the Noble County
Democratic Women’s Club. She was a member of the IU Alumni Association,
the Elks Lodge No. 1194, the Moose Lodge No. 730, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority,
Business and Professional Women, Kendallville Windmill Museum & Historical
Society, and the North Shore Animal League. Survivors include a daughter
and son-in-law, Patricia and James Mesing of Jacksonville, Florida; two
granddaughters and their spouses, Tammy and Chris Cotton of North Webster and
Traci and Edward Schuh of Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren, Candice, Trevor,
Trent and Kayla Brown and Bowden, Cameron and Camille Schuh; and one
great-great-grandson, Jaxon Brown. She was also preceded in death by her
sisters, Joan Iddings who died in May 1999 and Mary Kathryn Likens who died

Kendallville. He was a lifetime Kendallville area resident and was employed by
Cal-Gas Corporation. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, BPOE No.
1194, Kendallville Moose and Noble County Plan Commission and had served as a
Democratic Party precinct committeeman. Surviving are his wife and mother; a
daughter, Pat Mesing of Decatur; two brothers, Max. R. 2, Kendallville, and
Victor of Ligonier; two granddaughters, Tammy Brown and Traci Kinerk of Avilla.

Newman Ellsworth L, 69, R. 2, Kendallville, died Sunday when he was stricken with a heart attack at home. He was dead on arrival
at the McCray Hospital. He was recently elected as council-at-large
of Noble County. He previously served 8 years as trustee of Allen Twp and 8
years as Noble County assessor. He was a retired farmer and had lived in the
Kendallville area for 40 years. Born September 9, 1901 in LaGrange County, he
was the son of Curtis and Millie (Helm) Newman, both deceased. He was married
December 9, 1922 in Albion to Luella K. Poppy. She survives. He was a member of
the First Christian Church of Kendallville, being formerly on the board of
trustees. At the time of his death he was director of the Avilla Lions Club, a
member of the Noble County Farm Bureau and a director of Farmer’s Mutual.
Surviving besides the wife are 3 sons, Donald L. and Max E. of R. 2,
Kendallville, and Victor, Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Gladys
Whitford, Kendallville; and one

Newman Elmer T, 52, owner of Elmer’s Tavern in Kendallville the past 18
years, died Tuesday in McCray Hospital. He was born north of
Kendallville March 2, 1909, the son of Curtis and Millie Helm Newman and was
married in 1940 in Brimfield to the former Pearl Hewitt. In 1943 he opened his
place of business and maintained it in Kendallville since then. He was a member
of Elks Lodge 1194, the Moose and Eagles Lodges and was a member of the Father’s
Auxiliary of VFW. Surviving are his wife; 3 sons, Roger and Eugene of
Kendallville, and Richard of Indianapolis; 3 brothers, Glenn of Sturgis,

Newman Eugene Curtis, 60, died January 13, 1992 in his Rome City
home. He was born in Kendallville January 30, 1931, the son of Elmer T.
and Pearl B. (Hewitt) Newman. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the
Korean Conflict, he managed Elmer's Bar on Main St. 1953-1973 and was unit
manager at King Seeley 1974-1982 and plant manager from 1983 to present at GD. He was a member of Rome City Legion, Kendallville VFW, Moose and Elks
lodges. He married Patricia Ann Friskney in Reno, Nev. on February 1,
1952. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Gail Fox of Albion and Gina Cook
of Garrett; 3 sons, Gary of Fort Wayne, Geoffrey of Logansport and Gordon of
Kendallville; a brother, Roger of Wawaka; and 14 grandchildren. An infant

Fort Wayne. She was born on May 3, 1954, in Kendallville to John and Norma (Kurtz) Boszor. She had worked as a teacher’s assistant for 20
years at Vistula Head Start in LaGrange. She was a member of the Noble
Chapter OES #122, Rome City American Legion, Kendallville Elks Lodge, VFW, Moose Lodge. On June 12, 1976, in
Kendallville, she married Roger L. Newman. He died September 15,
2010. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Devon and Dan Hutson of Kendallville, and Melissa and

(Lauer) Keller. She married Max E. Newman on June 30, 1945 in Los Angeles,

Center. She was born July 13, 1902 in Noble County to Charles P. and Effie
(Lawyer) Poppy. On December 9, 1922 in Albion she married Ellsworth
Newman, who died in November 1970. She was a member of First Christian
Church, Allen Twp Homemakers Club and Democrat Women's Club. Surviving are
2 sons, Max of Kendallville and Victor of Avilla; a daughter-in-law, Betty
Newman; a sister, Hazel Stroman; a brother, Harold Poppy, all of Kendallville; 5
grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. A

88, Kendallville, died July 24, 2013 at the Parkview Noble Hospital. He
was born February 3, 1925, in Kendallville to Ellsworth and Luella (Poppy)
Newman. He graduated from Avilla High School in the class of 1943. He served in
the U.S. Navy during WW II. He married
June Keller in Los Angeles, California, on June 30, 1945. She died
January 25, 2008. He was a farmer for his life’s
work, but also retired from Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Avilla and American Legion Post #240, Avilla. Surviving are a son and
daughter-in-law, Max E and Maria Newman of rural Avilla; daughters,
Vickie L. Tuffley of Kendallville, Judith and Michael Huesner of Fort Wayne,
and Melissa Henry of Patterson, Louisiana; 3 grandchildren, Chad Burton,
Brett Frick and Erin Frick; two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Tera Frick. He was preceded in death by his

Newman Pearl Beatrice, 89, of Kendallville, died Sept. 27, 2006 at
Kendallville Manor. She was the co-owner and operator of Elmer's Bar in
Kendallville from 1945 to 1973. She was a former member of Women of the
Moose, Elks Lodge and McCray Hospital Auxiliary. She was born April 15,
1917 in Payne, Ohio to J. F. and Jenny (Brown) Hewitt. She married Elmer
Taft Newman on April 27, 1940 in Brimfield. He died in Oct. 1961.
Surviving are a son and 2 daughters-in-law, Roger and Evelyn Newman of
Steinbarger Lake, Wawaka, and Patricia Newman of Rome City; a brother, Paul
Hewitt of Kendallville; 8 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Richard and Eugene Newman; a brother,
Doyle Hewitt; and a sister, Maxine Gray. Services Friday at Young Family

Newman Richard T, 42, died Sunday in St. Paul, Minn., where
he had resided the past year. He was born Feb. 4, 1929 in Kendallville to Elmer
T. and Pearl B. (Hewitt) Newman, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, was
employed in construction, and belonged to the VFW and American Legion. He is
survived by the mother; and two brothers, Eugene, 501 N. Main St., and Roger,

Newman Roger L, 86, of Wolcottville, died Sept. 15, 2010 at Bronson
Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich. from injuries sustained in a motorcycle
accident on Sept. 12. He was a JV golf coach at Westview High School in
Topeka. He worked for the LaGrange County Highway Department, had
operated Roger Newman Trucking Co., and was a farmer. He was a member of
the Meridian Sun Lodge 76, F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne,
Mizpah Shrine Temple in Fort Wayne, the LaGrange County Shrine Club, the
Kendallville American Legion SAL, Kendallville Elks Lodge 1194, LaGrange Moose
Lodge 1351, Kendallville VFW Men’s Auxiliary, ABATE of Indiana, H.O.G., and
the Indiana American Legion Riders Chapter 86. He born on May 13, 1954, in
Kendallville, to Charles R. “Dick” and Marjorie (Rasler) Newman. On
June 12, 1976, in Kendallville, he married Jackie L. Boszor. Surviving are his
wife; his parents; two daughters and sons-in-law, Devon and Dan Hutson of
Alexandria, Va., and Melissa and Jonathan Baker of Kokomo, Ind.; two
grandchildren, Tanner and Adalynn Hutson of Alexandria, Va.; a sister and
brother-in-law, Kim and Bob Kanney of Antwerp, Ohio; and a brother and
sister-in-law, Bruce and Beth Newman of Wolcottville. Funeral Sept. 21,

Newman Roger W, 78, of Steinbarger Lake, Wawaka, died March 27, 2011.
He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for his parents at Elmer’s Bar on
Main Street in Kendallville, was self-employed with Newman’s Enterprise Inc.
as a merchandiser to area clubs, such as the VFW, American Legion, Eagles, and
Moose. He was a member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749, American
Legion Post 86, Kendallville Moose Lodge 1301, Kendallville Eagles Lodge, the
Garrett VFW, and the Goshen VFW. He was born December 24, 1932, in Kendallville to Elmer T. and Pearl B. (Hewitt)
Newman. On April 19, 1959, in Kendallville he married Evelyn Lehman.
Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and Gerald May
of Ligonier and Dawn and David Marshall of Steinbarger Lake; a son and
daughter-in-law, Mark and Rita Newman of Rome City; two grandsons, Greg E.
Emerick Jr. and Derek Marshall; and a great-granddaughter, Malorie Elaine
Marshall. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Eugene Newman.

Newman Victor L, 66, died January 26, 2004 in Parkview Noble
Hospital. He was a resident of Your Friends & Neighbors group home in
Avilla. He was born July 17, 1937 in Kendallville to Ellsworth and Luella
(Poppy) Newman. Survivors include a brother, Max E. (June) Newman of
Kendallville; 4 nieces and one nephew. Preceding him in death were his
parents and a brother, Donald. A lifetime Noble County resident, he
attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Avilla and worked at the Noble County
Foundations woodshop. Services Friday in Brazzell Funeral Home,

Newman Zonna I, 97, of Greencroft Nursing Center, Goshen, died Sept. 23,
2004 at the nursing center. She had worked at Wirk Garment Factory in
Ligonier for 20 years before retiring in 1955. She was a member of Grace
United Methodist Church in Niles, Mich. and was a Pythian Sister. She was
born July 20, 1907 in Otsego, Mich. to David and Ida (Slocum) Davis. She
married Arthur W. Newman on July 28, 1925. He died in 1990.
Surviving are 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Davis and Mary Jane of Niles, Mich.,
and Leon and Bonnie of Milford; 9 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 8
great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marland Davis of Kalamazoo,
Mich. Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Marva Houser; 3
brothers and 2 sisters. Services today at Mishler-Eastland Funeral Home,

Newnam Clarissa (Sturges) was born May 12, 1817 in the state of New York;
came to Indiana with her father in 1836; married G. P. Newnam in 1838. She was a
member of the Disciple of Christian Church. She was the mother of 3 children, 2
of whom survive her, one son and a daughter, the latter now living in Kansas.

Newnam Harmer M, 56, physician of LaGrange County, died Friday at his home in South Milford from Bright’s disease. He
was born March 4, 1861 near South Milford, the son of the late Isaac B. and
Katie Newnam, the mother who survives. He received his early training in the
Central Normal Schools at Danville, Ind. and then taught school in 1882. In 1886
he was graduated from the Rush Medical College at Chicago, Ill., and immediately
thereafter entered partnership with Dr. John Dancer. He was married Oct. 21,
1886 to Miss Katie J. Dancer. They had five children. Since that
time he has resided at South Milford, where he continued a successful practice
until the time of his sickness. Surviving are the widow; mother; 2 daughters,
Mrs. Belle Deal of Wyoming, Miss Beatrice at home; 3 sons, Iris P., John Russel,
and Samuel H; and two sisters, Mrs. Will Walters and Mrs. Sumner Bell. Funeral Monday from the Baptist Church, South Milford. Burial, South

Newnam Homer D was born April 5, 1861 on a farm near Brushy Prairie,
LaGrange County and died Feb. 20, 1916. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. N. B.
Newnam, both of whom are deceased. His youth was spent on the
farm where he labored day after day for the best interests of his father. He
received a common school education in the district schools and at the age of 21
entered the Valparaiso College where he took a literary course. Later he took a
course at Hillsdale, Mich. When in the prime of life assumed the duties of a
traveling salesman and was first employed by the Worthington Co. of Cleveland.
For 17 years he followed his profession. He was married to Cora Garns six years
ago, and besides the widow, a stepson, Wallace Garns; and a sister, Mrs. C. M.
Case, survive. Mrs. Case is the only surviving member of the original Newnam
family. For the last few years he had been identified with the business circles
of Kendallville and at the time of his death conducted a wholesale tobacco
store. He had developed up a large business. + 2-20-1916
Newnam Joseph, 75 years, 7 months and 6 days, died at his home here last
evening from cancer. He was a native of this community and was born on the farm
now occupied by Herbert Newnam southwest of here. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Daniel Newnam, early settlers of this community. About 53 years ago he married Dora Spaulding, who together with two sons, Herbert and Vern,
the latter owner of a garage here, survive. He engaged in farming for many years
and for some time had resided here. Funeral Tuesday. +

Newnam Millard P, 84, died Sunday in McCray Hospital. He was born
in Alliance, Ohio, on September 6, 1911 to Vern and Flo (Wallace) Newnam.
On November 11, 1935 in South Milford he married Telia Reed. She died
October 15, 1985. He had been a bookkeeper for Kendallville Foundry and
was an agent for New York Life Insurance. He retired in 1974 as a core
maker for Newnam Foundry. He was a member of First Christian Church and
F&AM 276, Kendallville. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Duane
(Marlene) Hanes of Kendallville and Mrs. Richard (Nancy) Miller of Fort Wayne; 4
grandchildren, Cathy Aumsbaugh, Doug Hanes, Melanie Moore and Mike Miller; and 4
great-grandchildren, Joel, Jared and Jonathan Aumsbaugh and Nathaniel

Newnam Nancy, 84, died at her home 312 Diamond St., Tuesday. Death was due principally to infirmities of old age. She was born
June 5, 1829 in Ross County, Ohio and came to Indiana with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. James Cochran, in the early thirties, locating in LaGrange County. She
married N. B. Newnam Feb. 17, 1852, and they began to farm on land
leased in Milford Twp. After farming the place for about a year and a half it
came into their possession by purchase. They resided in LaGrange County until
1880 when they took up their residence in Kendallville. Mr. Newnam became one of
Kendallville’s influential business men until the time of his death a few
years ago. She was the mother of 3 children, two of whom survived, Mrs. Mollie
Case, wife of C. M. Case, and a son, Homer D., both of this city. + 1912
Newnam Nicholas B died at his home, 312 Diamond St. in this city, Wednesday. He was born in Talbot County, Md., June 5, 1829, and was 74
years, 5 months and 6 days old. In 1836 his father, Nicholas B. Newnam Sr.,
moved his family from Maryland to Indiana and located in Springfield Twp,
LaGrange County. Here he bought a tract of land, which he improved and converted
into a fine farm and comfortable home. He was married Feb. 17, 1852 to Nancy Cochran, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. William Cochran, who were early
settlers of Milford Twp, LaGrange County. They remained on a farm he had
purchased in Milford Twp several years and then moved on a large farm he had
purchased a few miles south in the same township. Here they developed a splendid
farm home which they occupied until about 1880, at which time they became
residents of this city and where they have since resided. Much of his early life
was spent in farming, dealing in stock, etc., in which he was very successful.
He leaves a wife and 2 children, Mrs. C. M Case and Homer D. Newnam of this
city. His daughter, Addie M., died several years ago. Funeral from

Newnam Telia E, 75, of Kendallville, died Tuesday at Schoolcraft Hospital, Manistique, Mich. Born in South Milford Jan.
24, 1910, she was the daughter of Bert and Vinnie (Cookerly) Reed. On Nov. 11,
1934 in Kendallville she married Millard Newnam. She had lived in Kendallville
47 years, moving from South Milford. She was a beautician and had owned and
operated the Reed Beauty Shop on N. Main St. for many years. She was a member of
the First Christian Church in Kendallville and Noble County Hairdressers
Association. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Mrs. Duane (Marlene R.)
Hanes of Kendallville, and Mrs. Richard (Nancy S.) Miller of Fort Wayne; 4
grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. One brother, Eldon Reed, died earlier
this year. Services Friday at Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home,

Newsome Gordon, 76, died February 13, 1995 at Ligonier Health
Center. He retired from Monsanto in Ligonier in 1979. His first
wife, Elsie, died in 1962. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn B.; 2 daughters,
Bonnie Coyle of Columbia City and Gail Brumbaugh of Albion; 2 stepchildren; a
brother, Noah of Warsaw; 2 sisters, Velva Taggart and Loni Hamilton of
Ashtabula, Ohio; 2 half-sisters, Nancy Howe and Dinah Hamilton of Ligon, Ky.; 4

Newton Amady J, 80, of the VA Hospital in Marion, died Wednesday in Medco Center, Muncie. He was born in Goshen Feb. 1, 1908, the son of
Joseph A. and Margaret (Moore) Newton. He served in WW II and had been employed
by General Electric. Surviving are 2 brothers, Richard of Colon, Mich., and
Elmer of Kendallville; 2 nephews, Bob and Mick Newton; and a niece, Patty
McNutt, all of Kendallville. One sister and 2 brothers preceded him in death.

Newton Arthur D, 80, shoe merchant in Ligonier, died Saturday following a heart attack. He was the oldest merchant in the business
district here, having maintained a shoe business for the last 45 years. He
established a shoe business at an early age, was manager of the postal telegraph
office here at one time, and then returned to the shoe business. Surviving are
the widow, Dora; and one son, Richard, a student at Harvard University,

Newton Elmer Thomas, 81, died Wednesday in his Kendallville residence,
only days after his wife died. He was born in Kendallville January 12,
1912 to Amady Joseph and Margaret (Moore) Newton. On November 17, 1940 in
Michigan City he married Grace Engelbrecht, who died Feb. 8. He was
a retired dispatcher for the Kendallville Police Dept. He had worked for
Wheel Works; owned and operated Capitol Service Station; and the Standard Oil
Bulk Plant. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Elks
Club. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia L. McNutt of Kendallville; 2
sons, Robert and Michael of Kendallville; 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Scott and Amy
McNutt, Jennifer Newton and Jacqueline Brady; and a great-granddaughter, Shelby
Brady. Four brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Funeral

Newton Grace Phyllis, 70, died Monday in McCray Hospital. Born in
Chicago May 6, 1922, she was the daughter of Edward C. and Bertha (Wittenborn)
Engelbrecht. Following her father's death, she was adopted by her mother's
second husband, Robert Engelbrecht. On November 17, 1940 in Michigan City,
she married Elmer Newton. She was a secretary in the East Noble Schools at
Avilla and Kendallville. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church,
Kendallville BPW Club, McCray Hospital Auxiliary and East Noble Secretaries
Association. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Patricia L. McNutt of
Kendallville; 2 sons, Robert and Michael of Kendallville; 5 grandchildren, Lisa,
Scott and Amy McNutt, Jennifer Newton and Jacqueline Brady; and a
great-granddaughter, Shelby Brady. Funeral Thursday in St. John Lutheran

Newton Richard Roland, 82, died Sunday in Thurston Woods Village Nursing
Home, Colon, Mich., from cancer. He was born December 19, 1909 in
Kendallville to Joseph and Margaret (Moore) Newton. He married Beatrice
Snyder February 28, 1946. He had been employed at McCray Refrigerator and
retired in 1975 from Kraft Foods. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Dee
Starnes of Toledo, Ohio; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and a brother

Newton Vincent L, 68, died Sunday in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born in Kendallville and was a retired employee of the VA Medical Center.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Vivian Condiff of Fort Wayne, and Annette Reas of
Winter Haven, Fla.; 2 sons, Francis Bauman of Fort Wayne, and Vincent C. Newton
of Churubusco; and 3 brothers, Elmer of Kendallville, Dick of Michigan, and
