Munton Suzette Whitney Church, son Sidney, and daughter Alice, were killed at the East St. railroad crossing today when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by NYC train No. 157. They had just gone to Dowling St. to see the army motor trucks pass and had just started to return home. Sidney, who was driving, saw the approaching train and made an effort to turn around but had only partially succeeded when the engine struck the machine almost squarely in the rear and carried it along with the occupants crying for help. Mrs. Munton was born July 22, 1874 at Greenville. She married Clarence J. Munton Nov. 19,1897 at Greenville, when they moved soon after to Milwaukee, Wis., where they spent most of their married life, coming to Kendallville in 1911. Surviving are her husband; her mother, Mrs. Mary E. S. Church; and sister, Mrs. Julia E. Phelps of Greenville, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Genevieve Moulton of Venice, Calif. Sidney Church Munton was born Jan. 9, 1899 at Milwaukee and was a junior in our local high school. Alice Mary Munton was born at Milwaukee Sept. 9, 1901, and was also a junior in Kendallville High School. The funeral will likely be sometime Monday at the home. Mr. Munton was president of the Fort Wayne & Northwestern Interurban Railway, president of Noble Motor Truck Corporation, Chairman of the Republican County Central Committee and state senator from this district. It is perhaps not out of place here to refer to the grade crossing again the scene of this terrible accident. It is the particular crossing about which there has been so much agitation and discussion recently, the matter having been before the common council number of times. It is "protected" if it may be called protection, by signal bells that are said to ring almost continuously, so much so that people who use the crossing pay no attention to the ringing as they ring whether a train is in sight or not. The view is obstructed by nearby trees and buildings. The railway company has promised to remedy conditions in some way. It is now, as it has been, up to the city council to act. + No date

Myers Luther, a farmer residing near Salem in Noble County, met with a horrible death yesterday. He left home in the morning, going to a sugar camp nearby. We judge it was an old-fashioned camp and they were manufacturing maple syrup in the old-fashioned way. The kettles were suspended on a pole supported by forks at either end and the fire was built beneath them with a large log for a backwall. While in pursuit of his duties the supposition is that he was seized with a convulsion to which he was subject and fell so that his body was suspended on the pole immediately over the fire. All his clothing was burned off even to his boots, and when found the sight was a ghastly one. The body was charred black and a watery or greasy substance was oozing out of his head which rested on a burning log. The unfortunate man would weigh about 225 pounds and was 35 or 40 years of age. ^ 3-17-1896
