Marshall Carol Frances, five-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shirley
Marshall of six miles southwest of Kendallville, died Sunday an hour after she had been given cough medicine which probably contained
an abnormal amount of strychnine. Awakening with a cough at 5 o’clock, the
child was given only three-quarters of a teaspoon of cough syrup, believed to
have been a home-made preparation. Convulsions followed a short time later and
the physician who was called administered treatment for strychnine poisoning, to
which she rallied and then relapsed. Coroner Myron C. Hutchins was summoned and
ordered a post mortem examination. The child’s stomach and its contents, along
with the remaining portion of cough medicine was sent to Indianapolis for
analysis. Coroner Hutchins was told the medicine had been unused since last
spring when it was prepared by Marshall’s stepmother, now a resident of
Michigan. He stated an effort probably would be made to contact the woman.
Besides the parents, the child is survived by one sister, Shirley, and the
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Hass. The mother was formerly Miss Eleanor
Hass. Burial in (line missing) ion Cemetery. Funeral this afternoon at St. John Lutheran Church. * 12-?-1939 + 12-?-1939

Martz Walter "Jack", 90, one of the longest continuous
Main Street businessmen in the city’s history, died Monday at
McCray Hospital. A barber on S. Main St. for more than 6 decades, he was
barbering until last week. His most famous customer at his barber shop was the
famous gangster John Dillinger, who visited Kendallville several times on his
way to Chicago. Mr. Martz recalled giving Dillinger a shave and haircut on three
separate occasions. Born Oct. 25, 1896 in Grove Hill, Ohio, he was the son of
Martin F. and Mary (Kelsey) Martz. On June 10, 1920 he married Mary L. Collins
in Albion. He came to Noble County in 1907, moving to Kendallville in 1919. He
got started in barbering almost by accident. His stepfather, James Miller, who
was a jack-of-all-trades, turned to barbering and prodded him into the
profession. He started with a wooden chair back in the 1920’s, charging 25
cents for a haircut and 15 cents for a shave in those early days. He worked at
Flint & Walling 1925-1942, keeping his shop open in the evenings. WW II
brought in even more business as Army men were used to keeping their hair short,
and he decided to barber full time 45 years ago. Surviving are his wife; a
daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Madelynne) Parker of Kendallville; three grandchildren,
Mrs. Verlin (Nancy) Lung of Kendallville, Thomas Kemerly of Nashville, and Mrs.
Gregory (Kay) Snapp of El Paso, Texas; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Steve
