Lemaster Ebbon, 75, Albion, died
today at McCray Hospital. He was born May 4, 1900 to Mr. and Mrs. Abraham and Lucine
(Yagel) Lemaster. He was married to Zelma in Goshen in 1942. He was a charter
member of the Albion Eagles. Surviving are his wife; three sisters, Elda and
Mamie, Merriam, Edna Butler, Fla.; two brothers, John, Kokomo; and Floyd,
Spokane, Wash. Funeral at the Wesleyan Church at Albion Saturday.

Lemaster Elda A, 85, Merriam, died Saturday in Columbia City
Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 8, 1891 in Whitley County to Abraham and Lucine
Yagel Lemaster. She was self-employed and was a janitor at Merriam Christian
Chapel and school. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Viola) Davies, Merriam;
two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Edna) Butler, Alford, Fla., and Miss Mamie Lemaster,
Merriam; two brothers, John, Kokomo, and Floyd, Spokane, Wash.; five
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One son, Ralph A. McNeal; one
brother; and two sisters preceded her in death. Funeral Wednesday in
Merriam Christian Chapel. Burial, Christian Chapel Cemetery. + 5-?-1976
Lemaster John W, 94, died Jan. 4, 1992 in Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia
City. He was born July 6, 1897 in Noble County to Abraham and Lucine
(Yagel) Lemaster. He was a carpenter with Richard Harny
Construction in Kokomo, retiring in 1980. He was a WW II Navy veteran and
a member of Merriam Christian Chapel, Kokomo Masonic Lodge No. 93, Moose Lodge
No. 179, American Legion Post 6 and Indianapolis Scottish Rite. He
survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and
5 sisters. Services Tuesday in Orr Funeral Home.+ 1-4-1992
Lemaster Lucine was born May 22, 1866 and died Oct. 14 at
her home in Merriam. Services at Christian Chapel Oct. 17. Burial, Christian
Chapel Cemetery. Surviving are four daughters, Miss Elda at home, Mrs. Ada
Prouty of Roanoke, Mrs. Earl Butler of Ligonier and Miss Mamie of Wolf Lake;
three sons, Ebbon of Albion, John of Kokomo, and Floyd of Spokane, Wash.; 12

Lemaster Mamie E, 85, died Feb. 6, 1990 in Miller's Merry Manor,
Columbia City. She was born March 14, 1904 in Noble County, the daughter
of Abraham and Lucine (Yagel) Lemaster. She was a member of
Merriam Christian Chapel and had worked for the Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake and
in the office of Dr. James Roth for 46 years, retiring in 1983. Surviving
are a sister, Edna Butler of Alford, Fla.; and 2 brothers, John of Albion and
Floyd of Spokane, Wash. A brother and 3 sisters preceded her in
death. Services Friday in Orr Funeral Home. Burial, Christian Chapel

Lemaster Zelma H, 75, died Sunday (d. 12-26-1982) at
Strawberry Village Nursing Home, Ligonier. She was born Aug. 24, 1907 in Albion
to Calvin W. and Grace (Guthrie) Kidd. In 1942 she married Ebbon Lemaster
in Goshen. He died Jan. 8, 1976. A lifetime Noble County resident, she was a
member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and a charter member of the Eagles
Auxiliary. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Gerald (Marjorie) Kiester of R. 2,
Albion; and a brother, Kenton M. of Cassopolis, Mich. Services Wednesday

Lemaux Berenice E, 89, died Feb. 13, 2001 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home,
Kendallville. She was born June 17, 1911 in Ridgeville to Claude and
Margaret (Hendrickson) Lemaux. She attended First Christian Church,
Kendallville. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack
Skinner of Kendallville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank

Lemieux Betty L, 59, of W. Union St., died this morning at Strawberry
Village Nursing Home. Born May 16, 1923, she was the daughter of Ray and Ruby (Olinghouse)
Price. On Feb. 22, 1941, she married Jerry Lemieux. She was a member of St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ligonier. Surviving are her husband; a daughter,
Patricia Smoots of Ligonier; a son, Stan Lemieux of Libertyville, Ill.; a
sister, Jeanie Miller of Cromwell; three brothers, Virgil of Ligonier, Robert of
Ayresville, Ohio, and Ed of Syracuse; and five grandchildren. Services Friday at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial, Oak Park Cemetery. + 5-19-1982
Lemieux Jerry, 76, died Monday in Goshen General Hospital. He was
born Jan. 10, 1921 in Chicago to Richard and Lillian (Lancaster) Lemieux.
On Feb. 22, 1941 in Ligonier he married Betty Price. She died in
1982. He had lived in the Ligonier area 60 years and had worked for
Johnson Control in Goshen. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, American Legion Post in Syracuse and Moose Lodge and VFW Post in
Goshen. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are a son, Stan
of Kimmell; a daughter, Patricia Smoots of Ligonier; a brother, Les of Kimmell;
2 half-brothers, Phil and Frank Madden of Elgin, Ill.; 5 grandchildren and 2
great-grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at St. Patrick's Church.

Lemieux Josephine, 79, died Jan. 3, 2000 at Kingston of Ligonier.
On Sept. 11, 1920 in Kimmell she was born to Cloyd and Lena (Bozzay)
Speaker. On Oct. 15, 1938 she married Les Lemieux in Goshen. She was
retired from Monsanto after 33 years. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Mrs. Charles (Judy) Musselman of Ligonier; a son and daughter-in-law,
Larry and Sandy Lemieux of Paulding, Ohio; 4 grandchildren, Jeff Boyle, Jason
Musselman, Michael and Mark Lemieux; and a great-granddaughter, Chelsea

Lemieux Leslie L, 92, formerly of Kimmell, died Aug. 26, 2010 at Defiance
Inpatient Hospice in Defiance, Ohio. He was born Aug. 19, 1918 in Chicago,
Ill., the son of Joseph and Lillian (Lancaster) Lemieux. He was an
inspector at Penn Controls in Goshen and was married to Josephine Speaker, who
preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in
Ligonier. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Sandra
Lemieux Jr. of Paulding, Ohio, and a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Charles
Musselman of Ossian; and a brother, Phil Madden; 4 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 4

Leming John J, 73, of R. 1, Cromwell, died today at Goshen
Hospital. Born in Ligonier April 1, 1910, he was the son of Floyd and Katherine
(Sack) Leming. On April 11, 1937 in Albion, he married Mildred Dewey. A lifetime
Ligonier resident, he was a retired employee of the B&O Railroad and an Air
Force veteran of WW II. He was a member of the Ligonier American Legion Post
243, Syracuse VFW Post 1342, Ligonier Masonic Lodge No. 185 and Scottish Rite of
Fort Wayne. Surviving are his wife; a stepson, William Cochran of Frederick, Md.
Services Friday at Orr Funeral Home, Ligonier. Burial, Oak Park

Leming Mildred S, 92, died Wednesday in Ligonier Health Facility.
She was born July 22, 1904 in Goshen to Jesse and Bertha (Dick) Dewey. On
April 11, 1937 in Albion she married John Leming. He died in 1983. A
1922 graduate of Ligonier High School, she had been a clerk for Krogers in
Ligonier. She was a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church and West
Noble American Legion Post 243 Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, William
Cochran of Frederick, Md.; a half-brother, Robert Dewey of Sun City, Ariz.; 2
stepsisters and 4 grandchildren. Funeral Saturday in Orr Funeral

Lemish Albert, 65, a former Garrett resident, died Saturday of
cancer of the liver in the Passavant Hospital in Chicago. He resided in South
Chicago and was a machinist in a Gary steel mill. Funeral was Friday in South
Chicago and burial followed in that city. He was born Dec. 10, 1878 at Ege, Ind.
and came to Garrett in 1900 to become employed as a machinist in the B&O
shops. He left Garrett in 1910 to live in South Chicago and work in the steel
mills. He had planned on retiring in a year and was going to buy a farm next to
that of his brother Joseph. He and Rose Lau of South Chicago were married in
1906. Surviving are the widow; three brothers, Joseph, southwest of Garrett,
John of Ege, and Theodore of Battle Creek, Mich. + 3-?-1944
Lemish Bernard C died at the age of 53 in DeKalb Hospital Thursday. He was a Garrett area resident for most of his life. His
late home was 1701 South Road. He was employed as an assembler at General
Electric Co., Fort Wayne. He was born April 1, 1916 in Ege to John and Mary
Green Lemish. The mother survives and is a patient at Glen Oaks Nursing Home in
Auburn. He was married in Garrett on Jan. 27, 1940 to Francis Miller, who also
survives. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garrett and an
Army veteran of WW II. Surviving in addition to the wife and the mother are two
sons, Paul, 416 S. Lee St., Garrett, and Alan, at home; three daughters, Mrs.
James Moore, Hamilton, Mrs. Edwin Burkmire, Elkhart, and Mrs. Larry DePew, 114
½ S. Britton St., Garrett; three brothers, Peter, New Haven, Edward, Albion,
and Leo, Churubusco; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Barton, Monticello, and Mrs. Robert
Heitz, Garrett, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral in St.

Lemish Donald Paul, 72, of Goshen, died Dec. 29, 2005 at his
residence. He was born Aug. 26, 1933 in Fort Wayne to Peter Paul and Zelda
(Telgeman) Lemish. He was a truck driver and a member of Goshen DAV and
the VFW. Surviving are a son, Larry; 2 daughters, Karen Bishop of Fort
Wayne and Debbie Reardon; and 3 sisters, Beverly Shumaker of Avilla and Sally
Seigman and Rita Moss of Fort Wayne. Memorial services Saturday at DAV No.

Lemish Edward W, 85, died Friday in Provena Sacred Heart Home,
Avilla. He was born April 26, 1914 in Ege to John and Mary (Green) Lemish. On July 16, 1936 in Ege he married L. Faye Kimmel. She died
June 30, 1990. He retired from the maintenance department of Phelps Dodge
in 1980. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ligonier.
Surviving are a daughter, Martha Ferguson of Churubusco; 4 sons, Richard of
Churubusco, Kenneth of Albion, Steven of Kimmell and James of Avilla; one
sister, Mary Ann Heitz of Waterloo; one brother, Leo of Kendallville; 13
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by
a sister, Helen Bolton; and 2 brothers, Pete and Bernard. Funeral Wednesday

Lemish Helen M, 51, was born May 23, 1922 in Fort Wayne to Anthony and
Pearl Thatcher Kochs. In 1956 she married Leo Lemish, who survives. They lived
their entire married life at the farm. She worked for 15 years at the Fort Wayne
Knitting Mills. She was a member of Ege Immaculate Conception Church and the
auxiliaries of both the Moose and Eagles Lodges. She resided at R. 1, LaOtto and
died Monday at McCray Hospital. Other survivors include a sister,
Mrs. Ralph (Bernadine) Engerman, Kendallville, and a brother, Othmar Kochs,
Mesa, Ariz. Services Thursday at Ege Catholic Church. Burial, Fort Wayne

Lemish John, 87, a lifelong resident of Ege and a farmer all of his life,
died Saturday in Garrett Hospital from cancer. He was born December
10, 1873 at Ege, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Lemish. He was married
February 5, 1907 at Coldwater, Mich., to Mary Zielinski. Surviving besides the
widow are four sons, Peter of New Haven, Ed of Albion, Bernard of 1701 South
Road, Garrett, and Leo of LaOtto; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Heitz of LaOtto and
Mrs. James Bolton of Monticello, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; and a brother Joe of
southwest of Garrett. Services Tuesday in Immaculate Conception

Lemish, died Saturday at Parkview Hospital, 16 hours after birth.
Surviving are his parents; 2 brothers, Jake and Alex; a sister, Amanda;

of Churubusco; and great-grandparents, Mildred Leazier of Churubusco, Ed Lemish

Lemish Joseph, 96, of R. 1, Garrett, died Tuesday at Glen
Oaks Nursing Home. He had been a resident of Glen Oaks two years. He was born
Aug. 7, 1875, the son of George and Mary Lemish, in Ege. He married Anna
Paluszak in Garrett May 5, 1903. His wife preceded him in death in 1936. He was
a retired farmer. Survivors include four sons, Anthony of Auburn, Frank and
Albert, both of Fort Wayne, and Lawrence at home; three daughters, Mrs. Mary
Dressler of Avilla, Mrs. Rose Lubomirski of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Leona Case of
Grabill; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Garrett, Elks, Eagles, K of C., and the National Holstein Friesian Association.

Lemish L Faye, 73, died Saturday in her Kimmell residence. She was
born Dec. 22, 1916 in Noble County, the daughter of George and Effa (Owen)
Kimmel. On July 16, 1936 in Ege she married Ed Lemish. She was a
member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ligonier, VFW Auxiliary in Wolf Lake
and Southwestern Coon Hunters Association. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Martha Ferguson of Churubusco; 4 sons, Richard of Churubusco, Kenneth
of Albion, Steven of Kimmell and James of Avilla; 5 sisters, Margaret Marshall
of Albion, Betty Mote of Marion, Maxine Collins of Kendallville, Laila Hand of
Huntertown and Barbara Rider of Larwill; 2 brothers, Ed Kimmel of Kimmell and
William Kimmel of Churubusco; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Lemish Lawrence, 65, was born July 25, 1906, in Garrett, the son of
Joseph and Anna (Paluszak) Lemish. He was a lifelong area resident and farmer.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Indiana Holstein Association
and Holstein Friesian Association of America. He died May 18, in
Garrett Hospital of a stroke. Survivors include three brothers, Anthony of
Auburn, and Frank and Albert of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. Raymond Dressler
of R. 1, Avilla, Mrs. Leo Case of Grabill and Mrs. Casimir Lubomirski of
Fort Wayne. A concelebrated mass was performed May 22 in St. Joseph’s Catholic

Lemish Leo A, 85, died Nov. 26, 2002 at Shepherd of the Hill nursing
home. A farmer, he retired in 1977. He was a member of Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, Moose and Eagles lodges in Kendallville. He
was born in Ege on April 15, 1917 to John and Mary (Green) Lemish. He
married Helen Kocks on Aug. 25, 1956. She died in July 1973. He
married Maxine Addis Hursey on Dec. 26, 1978 in Kendallville. Surviving
are his wife; 3 stepchildren; and one sister, Mary Ann Heitz of Hamilton.
Three brothers, Ed, Bernard and Pete Lemish; and one sister, Helen Bolton,
preceded him in death. Services Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic

Lemish Mary, 81, died Saturday in the Sacred Heart Home. She
was a resident of the LaOtto area for 65 years and was born March 25, 1890 in
Gerard, Mich., the daughter of William and Rose (Stovick) Green. Her husband,
John, preceded her in death in 1961. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs.
Robert Heitz of Garrett and Mrs. Helen Bolton of Monticello; three sons, Edward
of Albion, Leo of LaOtto and Peter of New Haven; one brother, Leo Green of
Tekonsha, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A fourth son,
Bernard, preceded his mother in death. She was a member of the Rosary Society of
Ege Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella,
Garrett. Funeral March 7 at Ege Church. Burial, Ege Catholic Cemetery. ~

Lemish Mary Isabelle, 85, died at the home of her son, John, in Swan Twp
last Friday from infirmities of age. She was born in Poland on March 19,
1846. Surviving are four sons, John and Joseph of Garrett, Albert of Chicago,
and Theodore of Battle Creek, Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Antonia Garstka of
this county. Funeral was held from the Ege Catholic Church Monday.

Lemish Maxine R, 80, of Kendallville, died Aug. 10, 2004 at Parkview
Hospital in Fort Wayne. She retired in 1980 after serving 25 years in the
office at Newnam Foundry. She was a member of Immaculate Conception
Catholic church in Kendallville, the Women of the Moose Chapter 730 and American
Legion Auxiliary. She was born May 11, 1924 in Green Twp, Noble County, to
Benjamin and Tillie (Banks) Addis. She married William Hursey on Sept. 25,
1942 in Albion. He died in 1977. She married Leo Lemish on Dec. 26,
1978 in Kendallville and he died Nov. 26, 2002. Surviving are 2 daughters,
Brenda and Jim Showen and Vickie Patee, all of Kendallville; 3 sisters and 2
brothers-in-law, Mae and Edgar Long and Joan and Glen Bollinger of Kendallville
and Patricia Hollar of Churubusco; 5 grandchildren, Rebecca Daniels, Marc and
Jeff Showen, Brian Hursey and Richard Patee Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren and a
great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Hursey
in 1981; a brother, Gerald Addis; and a sister, Audrey Hilliard.

County. His first wife, Velma L., died in 1963. His second wife, Marguerite E.,

Shumaker of Avilla, and Rita Moss of St. Louis, MO; a stepson, Ralph Starke of
Fort Wayne; a stepdaughter, Dolores Augsburger of Fort Wayne; 2 brothers, Ed and

Lemish Richard A, 65, died March 28, 2002 at Parkview Hospital in Fort
Wayne. He worked in the warehouse of Food Marketing in Fort Wayne,
retiring in 2000 after 33 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member
of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco. He was born in Green Twp
on Aug. 13, 1936 to Edward and Faye (Kimmel) Lemish. He married Peggy
Leazier in Ege on June 14, 1958. Surviving are his wife in Churubusco; 2
sons and a daughter-in-law, Rick of Churubusco and Blake and Susan of Albion; a
sister, Martha Ferguson of Churubusco; 3 brothers and 2 sister-in-law, Kenny and
Toni and Steve and Sandi of Albion and Jim of Kendallville; and 4 grandchildren,
Jake, Amanda, Bradley and Alex Lemish. He was preceded in death by a
grandson, Jonhenry Lemish, on Oct. 21, 1995. Mass of Christian Burial

95, of Ligonier, died November 18, 2013. He
was born in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, on July 11, 1918, the son of Albert and
Sadie (Rush) Lemley. He is survived by his stepchildren; his brothers,
Franklin (Willey) Lemley of Taylorsville, N.C., and Kenneth (Ann) Lemley of
Adrian, Mich. He was preceded in death by his
wives, Nora Bolyn and Patricia Coyle; and his siblings, Edith,
Evelyn, Wilma, John, Albert and Kinsey. He served in
the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of Shilo Baptist

Lemley Patricia Coyle, 72, died Tuesday in St. Joseph Medical Center in
Fort Wayne. She was born Feb. 2, 1927 in Portland, Ore. to Melvin and
Nancy Dick. On Sept. 23, 1943 in Seattle, Wash. she married Raymond Coyle,
who died in 1987. On Dec. 24, 1989 in Wawasee Chapel she married Clark
Lemley. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in
Kendallville. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Nancy Carrol Stump
of Cromwell and Annette Marie Rex of Ligonier; 3 sons, Melvin and Richard Coyle
of Ligonier and Raymond Coyle Jr. of Elkhart; a sister, Joan Bartell of
Portland, Ore.; a brother, Elton "Buster" Dick of Houston, Texas; 12
grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2

Lemmon Anthony E was born in Albion on Sept. 7, 1862, the son of
Dr. Stansbury W. Lemmon, one of the earliest pioneer physicians of Noble County,
and Harriet Wheeler of Allen Twp. He died at his home in Albion
April 20, 1951. Born also to Dr. and Mrs. Lemmon were Harriet Lemmon Hall of
Newark, Ohio, and Lillian Lemmon Baughman, now deceased. Mr. Lemmon spent
several years with a surveying party on the Great Lakes under his uncle, Eben S.
Wheeler, government engineer who was surveying for the canal locks at Sault
Sainte Marie. Returning to Albion, he became a teaming contractor and as such
furnished all the gravel used in the construction of the Noble County

trees surrounding the courthouse. All of these trees grew. On Nov. 16, 1886 he
married Emma E. Baughman who died on Nov. 14, 1945. They had three children, Clara Harriet Emerick of Kendallville, Charles
D. and Frank Stansbury of Albion. There are 12 grandchildren and 9
great-grandchildren. The remainder of his life he was a farmer and horse buyer.
For 47 years he was in the ice business in partnership with the late Charles
Beck, his close boyhood friend. Always a saddle horse enthusiast, he was known
as one of the oldest riders in Indiana, and only last summer he headed the
parade at Noble County Saddle Club. His six grandsons acted as pallbearers at
his funeral April 22, 1951 at Bonham & Miser Funeral Home. Burial, Rose Hill

Kansas, while en route to Tucson, Ariz. for the winter. He was driving through
by himself. He was a lifelong resident of the Albion community, a son of the
late Anthony E. and Emma B. Lemmon. His wife, Fern Hines Lemmon, died about 8
years ago. Surviving are 3 sons, Bert of Middlebury, Robert, Brooklyn, N.Y., and
Ben of Albion; three daughters, Mrs. Harold Rupert of Lewistown, N.Y., Vera of

Lemmon Emma Elizabeth, 80 years and 6 months, (b. 5-14-1865) died Nov. 14 at her home in Albion. She was the daughter of David and
Nancy Baughman and the family moved to Albion from Tiffin, Ohio, when she was
only 10 years of age, at the time of the building of the B&O Railroad. Her
father operated a foundry which made equipment used in building the right of
way. There were six children in the family; a brother and sister died as
children; two brothers, Alton L. and Delmar L., also preceded her in death. One
sister, Mrs. Ella B. Marker of Toledo survives her. On Nov. 16, 1886 she was
married to Anthony E. Lemmon and they had three children, all of whom
survive, Mrs. R. S. Emerick of Kendallville, Frank S. and Charles D., both of
near Albion. There are 6 grandson, 6 granddaughters and 6 great-grandchildren.
Five of the grandsons were in the service during the war and three of them are
still in service. She was a member of Albion Lodge No. 178 OES. Services were

Goshen Hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1892, the daughter of Edwin A. and

Hospital. He was born June 29, 1919 in Albion to Frank and Ethel (Belt)
Lemmon. He married Estelle Zajicek on Aug. 26, 1943 in Ripley, Tenn.
He was a member of Aldergate United Methodist Church in Marion. He served
in the Army Air Corps during WW II and was a member of Hamilton Masonic Lodge
No. 33 AF &AM and Marion Masonic Lodge No. 89 AF&AM. He worked as
an area adviser for the University of Illinois as a farm management field

N.Y., and died Dec. 19 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. R. Moore, Decatur,
Ind. She was married to Charles Lemmon at Attica, Ohio Aug. 23, 1845. He
preceded her in death over 3 years. They had 6 children, Charles
Judson, the eldest, who died at the age of 4; Martha Ellen, the second child
died at the age of 36. Four survive, Frances Ann Smith, Josephine Graham, Hannah
Ruth Moore and Florence Broughton. She was a member of the Baptist Church from

Lemmon Stansbury W, 82, the oldest physician of the county, having
resided in Albion since 1856, died at his home in that place Saturday from the complications of diabetes. He was born in Seneca County, N.Y.
Sept. 18, 1829, began the study of medicine at the age of 18 and has practiced
that profession since residing in Albion until a few years ago when he began
living a retired life. He is survived by a wife; one son, Anthony; and two
daughters, Mrs. Lillian Baughman of Albion, and Mrs. Hattie Hall of Newark,

Mabel Orcutt. She died Jan. 11, 1978. On Feb. 14, 1981 he married Grace Heckman.
A 1929 graduate of Larwill High School, he attended DePauw University. He lived
in Etna-Troy Twp in Whitley County until moving to a farm three miles west of
Wolf Lake in 1938. He was a member of the Ormas Baptist Church and a longtime
member of the Noble Twp Volunteer Fire Dept. He served several terms on the

Lemper Christina, 85, a former resident of Allen Twp, died last Wednesday at the home of her son, Rev. Charles
Lemper, at Attica, Ind. Her death was due to heart weakness. She was
born in Germany and came to America in 1833. With her husband, she came to
Avilla in 1856, and for many years resided here. She was the mother of ten
children, of whom only Fred, Gerhard and Charles are now living. The father died
about 1886 and since that time Mrs. Lemper has resided with her son, Rev. Father
Lemper at Attica. Brief funeral services were held at Attica on Friday, at which
ten priests officiated. The remains were brought to Avilla on Saturday.

Garrett Hospital. Born July 20, 1899, in Jefferson Twp, she was the daughter of

Lemper. He preceded her in death in 1942. She had been a 35-year employee of the
Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

native of Avilla, a former supervisor for the General Electric Co., he retired
five years ago after 38 years of service. Since his retirement, he was in the

resident, he was a member of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, Knights of
Columbus Council 451, GE Quarter Century Club and GPM Management Association.

She would have been 101 on January 13. The wife of Fred Lemper, she left this

Hospital, Bryan, Ohio. He was born June 16, 1914 in Avilla, the son of Henry and

Conception Church, Auburn. He was a farmer and retired from Warner Gear in 1975.

40 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of West

Lengacher Richard H "Dick", 50, of Ligonier,
died Tuesday at the home of his sister. He was given a heart
transplant in 1980 and was Indiana’s longest-living heart transplant patient.
Born Nov. 15, 1935, he was the son of William and Margaret (Delagrange)
Lengacher. He was a lifetime area resident and a retired mechanic. He was a
member of the Ligonier Elks Lodge No. 451 and Kendallville Moose Lodge.

Ligonier area 50 years ago from Allen County. A retired farmer and carpenter, he
was a member of the South Haven Amish Mennonite Church near Millersburg.
Surviving are four daughters, Margie Meroney of Ligonier, Mrs. Marvin (Emma)
Yoder of Kendallville, Mrs. Dan (Annette) Royer of Bristol, and Dorothy Lehman
of Goshen; three sons, Lavern and Richard of Ligonier, and William J. of
Shipshewana; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Two sons, Edwin and
Alvin, and five sisters preceded him in death. Services will be Sunday at South

Lennon Joyce Marie, 46, of 918 East Ave., died Sunday at
Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born in Toledo, Ohio July 8, 1936, she was the
daughter of Joseph and Dorothy (Santure) McQuillen. On Aug. 25, 1962 in Toledo
she married Fred W. Lennon. She moved from Toledo to Kendallville 17 years ago.
She was a teacher for East Noble School Corporation at Rome City School, a
member of Immaculate Conception Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and Gene
Stratton Porter Historical Society. During the summer she was head gardener at
Gene Stratton Porter Memorial, having restored the formal gardens there.
Surviving are her husband and mother; two sons, Christopher Sean 18, and Matthew
Reed 12, at home. Funeral mass will be Wednesday at Immaculate Conception

Brown County Health & Living Community in Nashville. She was a native

Edna Miller and Betty Fiedler of Shipshewana, Dorothy Sheets of Decatur; 5

Leonard Genevieve A of Fort Wayne was dead on arrival Sept. 4, at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born in Kansas and
orphaned. She was brought to Avilla by Father D. Duehmig and raised by him. A
resident of Fort Wayne for 50 years, she was employed in the dining room service
of the Lutheran Hospital. Prior to that she was employed for 30 years by the old
Boston Store, and before that, as a housekeeper. Surviving are three nieces,
Mrs. Delores Myers and Mrs. K. Gage, both of Decatur, and Mrs. Eloise Ehinger,

Leonhardt Geraldine P, 67, of Kendallville,
died Friday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born in Stroh
Aug. 18, 1921, the daughter of Paul E. and Dora May (Pierson) Rowlison. On Oct.
8, 1938 in LaGrange, she married William Wayne Leonhardt. A lifetime area
resident, she retired in 1983 from Fischer’s Family Pharmacy as a waitress.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Lady Elks and American Legion Post
86 Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Beverly Eshelman and
Paula Sibert of Kendallville, and Sandra Grimm of Huntertown; four sisters,
Betty Arnold of Kendallville, Cora Tuttle of Pleasant Lake, Catherine Kauffman
of Angola, and Joanne Huling of Mishawaka; a stepsister, Betty Stein of Fort
Wayne; a brother, Jay of Kendallville; 15 grandchildren; and 3
great-grandchildren. One son, Larry Wayne, died in 1971. Her parents, her

Hospital. He was born Dec. 30, 1939 in Kendallville to William and Geraldine (Rowlison)

Kendallville Concrete and Kraft Foods and was a member of Immaculate Conception
Church, Moose Lodge 1301 and Sons of Legion Squad 86. Surviving are the widow;

was employed by Sunrise Dairy, Angola and was a molder for Newnam Foundry.

Kendallville. He was born Aug. 23, 1916 in Fremont to William and Clara (Wartenbee)

Lepird Fayette, 65, of Ligonier, a native of Noble County, died at
his home in Ligonier Saturday from injuries sustained at his oil station
on Lincolnway West last Tuesday. A truck loaded with lumber from Cromwell backed against him, pinning him to the
station wall. The truck caught him as he stepped from the doorway. He
was born on the Hawpatch near Topeka and had been a lifelong resident of the
community. Surviving are the widow, 5 children, a sister, Mrs. Elmer Herald of Wawaka, and 2 brothers, Alton and
Elton of Goshen. The truck which caused his death also figured in the tragedy at Cromwell Friday when Ellsworth

Lepird Jack (Lt), 22, former resident of Ligonier, is reported as having
been killed in action in the European War Zone on July 24. He was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lester Lepird, formerly of Ligonier, where they were engaged in the
retail show business, but who now reside at Fargo, N.D. He was attached to an
American Air Force somewhere in England and went overseas early last April. Mrs.

Lepird John, son of Samuel and Harriet Lepird, was born April 4, 1850 in LaGrange County, and died Dec. 27, 1914, aged
64 years and 23 days. He died at the home of his sister, Mrs. George Walker. He
married Mary Ann Lantz in 1877 and had 3 children – Alma, Delta and Ellis.
A brother preceded him in death. Surviving are 2 daughters, Alma Lepird, Mrs. L. A. Nash of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one son,
Ellis Lepird of Battle Creek, Mich.; 4 sisters, Mrs. Jane Damey, Mrs. Ellen

Hospital, Fort Wayne. A Ligonier native, he retired in 1963 at owner of Lepird

Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, he retired after 32 years with Ajax

previous Tuesday while working at a sawmill near town. He was a plumber.

department of the McCray Refrigerator Co., died Saturday in the

September 27, 1922, in LaGrange County, the son of Paul and Ruth Lepper, and
resided on R. 1, Kendallville before moving to R. 2, Avilla, with his
half-brother, Richard Lieberenz, a month ago. The half-brother is the only

Bucyrus, Ohio, July 18, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Alta (Curry) Streets. She
married Raymond Lepper September 7, 1931 in Kenton, Ohio. She came to LaOtto

Mich. He died in 1970. A 1920 graduate of Ligonier High School, she was formerly employed by General Electric in Fort Wayne and owned

Leto Samuel J Jr., 49, who served as Avilla town marshal from July 1983
to June 1984, died Tuesday in Parkview Hospital from cancer. He
took the Avilla position following the death of town marshal William Miner Jr.,
who was gunned down May 28, 1983 while investigating a vandalism incident. He
resigned less than a year later to open a business in Fort Wayne. He is survived
by a son, Samuel J. III, and a daughter Maria L., both Fort Wayne; three
brothers, Nick of San Diego, and Domanic and Frank of Fort Wayne; and a sister,

Levering Martha, wife of William C. Levering, died at her home in Rome City on Sept. 15, 1891,
aged 69 years 5 months and 4 days. She was a daughter of Samuel Morris, born in Franklin County, Ohio April 11, 1822.
She came with her parents to Noble County in 1836. She married William C. Levering Oct. 18, 1846. They had three children, Manda L. (Crocker), Charles M. and
Ellen. Ellen died in 1859. Funeral at M. E. Church and burial at Albion Cemetery was last Thursday.

Levering William C was born in Middlebury Twp, Knox County, Ohio Aug. 6,
1823, and died in Shelby, Mich. July 12, 1900, aged 76 years 11 months and 24
days. He removed from Ohio to Indiana in early life, coming to Noble County when
the county seat was at Augusta. He married Martha Morris in 1846 and settled in
York Twp where he lived many years. He was one of the pioneers of the county,
living on his farm near Pleasant Grove until he removed to Michigan in 1882,
where he lived 6 years, coming back to Noble County again and residing at Rome
City, since which time he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Manda L. Crocker
of Shelby, Mich., where he died. He was a member of the M. E. Church for
over 50 years. His remains were brought to Albion for interment by the
son, Mr. Charles M. Levering of Mendon, Mich., and the daughter, Mrs. Crocker. ^

Levin Madra Dorothea, 81, died Tuesday in her Fort Wayne residence.
She was born Oct. 7, 1915 in Fort Wayne to Ernest Ray and Ethel Mae (Kennedy)
Byers. On May 1, 1944 she married Sam Levin. He died Sept. 5,
1983. She lived in Kendallville before moving to Fort Wayne in 1981.
Surviving are a daughter, Leslie A. Levin of Chicago; a sister, Anna J.
Schanlaub of Fort Wayne; a brother, Dick Byers of Fort Wayne; and 2
grandchildren. A son, Jack, died in 1950. Funeral today in D.O.

Levin Sam, 66, Kendallville and Fort Wayne businessman, died Monday at his residence in Fort Wayne. He was born Dec. 20, 1916 in Fort
Wayne to Jacob and Elsie (Frank) Levin. In 1944 he married Madra Byer. The Levin
family moved to Kendallville in 1937 from Fort Wayne. He was president of Levin
& Sons, Inc., Fort Wayne Auto Parts, chairman of Bixwood Inc., Kendallville,
and a partner in Three Rivers Apartments. He was a member of many civic and
charitable organizations. He donated the land and was a founder of the
Kendallville Youth Center which was completed in 1953. He and his wife recently
donated their 21-room Kendallville home, 112 S. Orchard St. to the city of
Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Leslie Enoch of Carmel; two
sisters, Jean Pownall and Bessie Levy of Kendallville; a brother, Ralph of
Sturgis, Mich.; and two grandchildren. A son, Jackie, died in 1950 at the age of

Levison Della C, 66, of Scarsdale, N.Y., died Friday of injuries sustained
Thursday when an automobile in which she was riding on U. S. 6 near Ligonier
overturned. A daughter, Mrs. S. Chase, was driving the car and was taken to the
hospital. Mr. Chase and the Chase children, Adele and James, also in the car,

from injuries and shock received when she fell on a lawnmower. Surviving are two

Levy Louis L died last Thursday at his home. He was a

Levy Ruth T, Ligonier, died Jan. 26, 1989 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. She had lived in the area most of her
life and was past president of the Noble County Board of Legal Guardians. She
was born in LaGrange, the daughter of Clark and Mahalia (Morrel) Todd. On June
14, 1915 she married Louis Levy in South Bend. She was a school teacher until
her marriage and then associated with the Levy Furniture Co. in Ligonier for
many years. Her husband died in 1969. One brother preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Norma Hite of Ligonier, and Elizabeth Antonides of
South Bend; two sons, Dr. Virgil of Fort Wayne and Jon of Astoria, Ore.; 14
grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Services Monday at

Levy Virgil L, 78, died Tuesday in Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier,
Calif. Born in Ligonier, he was an oral surgeon in Fort Wayne for 28
years, retiring in 1982. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran. Surviving
are 3 daughters, Laura Celarek of Elgin, Ill., Lydia Panyard of Fort Wayne, and
Lisa Gradeless of Hilliard, Ohio; 2 sons, Todd of Marion and Thaddeus of Fort

Lewandowski Edward,55, died February 26, 2011, at his Cree Lake home.
He was born in Baligrod, Poland, on May 18, 1955, to Walter and Maria
Lewandowski. He graduated from Catholic High School in Troy, New York, in 1972.
He later earned degrees from Milwaukee School of Engineering in Industrial
Engineering and Business Management. Ed married Melinda Koskubar on July 7, 1979, in Troy, New York.
He worked as an Industrial Engineer for Ametek in Racine, Wisconsin;
Franklin Electric in Bluffton, Indiana; Tower Automotive in Kendallville,
Indiana, and was currently working for Elkhart Products in Elkhart, Indiana. He was a member of the St. Gaspar Catholic Church in Rome
City and the Knights of Columbus in Kendallville.
Survivors include his mother of Troy, New York; his wife; one son;
Nicholas Lewandowski of Kendallville; one daughter; Crystal Lewandowski of
Kendallville; two grandchildren, Brianna Lewandowski and Natalie Lewandowski;
two adopted grandchildren, Melissa Lewandowski and Jeremy Lewandowski; two
brothers, Chet and Yvonne Lewandowski of Troy, New York, and Joe and Maria

Lewellen Ebba E, 91, died Feb. 25, 2000 at ExtendaCare in
Kendallville. She was born Dec. 28, 1908 in Chicago to Hans and Ida
(Johansson) Olson. On July 4, 1941 she married Joseph Albert Lewellen. He died Dec. 16, 1961. She practiced as a chiropractor in
her Kendallville home 1948-94. She was a member of the Indiana and the
American Chiropractic associations; OES, Esther Circle, American Legion
Auxiliary and Faith United Methodist Church of Kendallville. Surviving are
a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnna and Lenard Poppy of Kendallville; a son,

Lewis Bertha I, 89, of Merriam and formerly of Huntertown, died Dec. 31,
2007 at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. She was a cook at
the former Allen County Children's Home from 1966 to 1977 and was a member of
LaOtto Wesleyan Church. She was born in Wabash County on Aug. 14, 1918 to
William and Clara (Wintrode) Kumley. She married Glenn W. Lewis on Aug.
15, 1935. He died Jan. 25, 1990. Surviving are 3 sons and 2
daughters-in-law, Stewart and Arlene of LaOtto, William and Sue of Churubusco and
Larry Lewis of Fort Wayne; 4 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Glenna Robinson,

Garrett eight years before moving to Fort Wayne in 1923. She was a member of

Lewis David L, 56, of rural LaOtto, died August 9, 2000 in his home in
DeKalb County. He was born in Huntertown on May 3, 1944. On September 26, 1964 he married Bonnie
Harris. She survives. He grew up in Huntertown and lived in that
area until moving to his home southeast of LaOtto more than 25 years ago.
He was employed by Zollner Pistons in Fort Wayne for 35 years, first as a
machinist and later as a final inspector. He attended LaOtto Wesleyan
Church and was a member of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, the National
Rifle Association, the Beekeeper's Association and Union Local 2357. Also surviving are a
daughter, Jana Lewis-Converset of LaOtto; 3 sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark and
Nicholas Lewis of LaOtto, and Damon and Robin Lewis of Avilla; his mother,
Bertha Lewis of Huntertown; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Stewart and Arlene
Lewis of LaOtto, William and Sue Lewis of Churubusco, and Larry and Sandra Lewis

Lewis Earl Campbell, son of J. M. and Nellie Lewis, was born in
Bentonville, Ohio, May 12, 1892; died at the U. S. Aerial Station
at Hampton Roads, Va., June 16, 1921, aged 29 years, 1 month and 4
days. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in Oct. 1909, serving his country in this
capacity twelve and one-half years. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge IOOF No.
9, Norfolk Va. He leaves five brothers; Fred W., Adam H., James A.,
Charles T. and George of Racine, Wis.; and one sister, Mrs. Estelle Bremer of

Lewis Eva Jane (Knauer), 85, of Willard, Ohio, died. Final rites were July 14,
with burial in the Willard Mausoleum beside her husband, Byron. She was born near Avilla, and in 1888 was married to Byron Clinton Lewis, a
young trainman for the B & O. They first resided in Garrett. About three
years later they moved to Willard, and in 1936 Mr. Lewis, a well-known B&O
passenger conductor, died. The couple had no children. Surviving is a nephew,
Walter Knauer, of Fort Wayne, who made his home in Willard and looked after Mrs.
Lewis. She was one of the original groups which took the first step to establish
a public hospital in Willard and she died in the same hospital. ~7-26-1956
Lewis Frank, 64, Kendallville, died today at his residence.
He was born May 11, 1915 to Albert S. and Anna (Wall) Lewis in
Springfield, Ill. On July 21, 1936 he married Myra (Brophy) in Freeport, Ill. He
worked at Kraft Foods in Kendallville for 38 years and was a fourth degree
member of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to the Men’s Club of the
Immaculate Conception Church. He is survived by his wife and four sons, Thomas
Franklin Jr., South Bend, Jack, Kendallville, Dan, Rome City, and Kevin, Fort
Wayne; a brother, Albert S., Granite City, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. A daughter, Mary, and a sister, Virginia, preceded him in
death. Services at the Immaculate Conception Church Monday.

of Albion, died July 7, 1945 at his home of a heart attack.
He had worked in the hay field in the forenoon. He was a member of the EUB

64, of Kendallville, died December 29, 2013 at his home. He
was born in Middletown, Ohio, on November 25, 1949 to Clara Mae (Lewis) Lewis. He graduated from Morgan County High
School, West Liberty, Kentucky, in 1968 and served in the U.S.
Army during the Vietnam War. He married Benita Ann
Spriggs on July 24, 1976 in Clintwood, Virginia. He was employed in the
maintenance department at Bostwick-Braun in Ashley since September 2003.
Before that he worked at Key Plastics in Ashley. He was a member of the
American Legion Post 86, V.F.W. Post 2749 and the American Legion Riders all
in Kendallville and the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Brandi Lewis of Kendallville, Bridget Nash of Ft Wayne; 3 sons, Gary B. and Heather Lewis of

retired from General Electric in 1968 after 27 years and owned and operated

Raymond and Irene (Collins) Lewis. Survivors include 3 daughters and their

Lewis Letitia, about 79, (b. 8-19-1869) widow of the late Fred
Lewis, of three miles southwest of Albion, died Feb. 5, 1949 at the
Methodist Hospital in Fort Wayne from a heart ailment. She was a lifelong
resident of Noble County. Surviving are one son, Leland Hastings of Fort Wayne;
3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday

Lewis Loyal V was born in Munson, Geauga County, Ohio Nov. 21, 1838; and
died at Kendallville April 13, aged 58 years 4 months 23 days. His parents moved
to Indiana when he was 8 or 9 years old. When a young man he taught school in
the vicinity of this city. He enlisted in the army on the first day of Sept.
1861 and served as a private in Co. G, 30th Regiment, Ind. Vol. Inft.
until Dec. 7, 1863 when he was discharged at Whiteside, Tenn. and immediately
re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer and served until the close of the war. It was
during this term that he received injuries from which he never recovered. After
the war he resided for about 7 years in Penn. where he first became a member of
the Knights of Pythias and upon the establishment of a lodge of that order in
this city he became one of the charter members. He was also a member of Nelson
Post, G.A.R. He married Helen Cox March 23, 1871. They had 2 daughters
and one son. He was an experienced engineer and served the Flint & Walling
Mfg. Co. in that capacity for a number of years. It was while on duty in the
engine room that he was attacked on June 23 by the disease which made him an
invalid for nearly 4 years until death came last Tuesday. He leaves a wife and 3
children, Mrs. Nettie Streight, Miss Lottie and Mr. Ed Lewis. ^ 4-23-1897

(Helen) Ternet, R. 1, died Thursday at her home. Services were held Jan.
4 in the Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was in Bowers Cemetery.
She was a member of Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of
Railway Trainmen Auxiliary. Other survivors are four sons, Frank, Clayton and
James of Fort Wayne, and Donald, Phoenix, Ariz.; three other daughters, Mrs.

Lewis Mary Heltzel, 76, died May 28, 2004 at her residence. She had
been employed at Essex Wire, the Ligonier Advance-Leader and Roofing Products
International. She was a member of Wawaka United Methodist Church and the
Yarley Club. She was born July 31, 1927 in Whitley County, the daughter of
Lewis and Mary Etta (McClure) Krotzer. She married Claude Heltzel on Sept.
29, 1946 in Rome City. He preceded her in death. On Dec. 12, 1994
she married Howard Lewis. Surviving are her husband; a son and
daughter-in-law, Steve and Mary Ann Heltzel of Kendallville; 2 daughters and

She was born April 4, 1926 in Noble County to Forest Abraham and Della Delpha (Holzworth) Gill. On June 30, 1946 in Wawaka, she married Harry Calvin
Lewis. A lifetime area resident, she retired in 1980 from Lyall
Electric. She was a member of Cosperville Baptist Church. Surviving
are her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Forrest and Elizabeth Lewis of

Lewis Myra, 86, of Kendallville, died Oct. 14 in Sacred
Heart Home in Avilla. She was born in Limerick, Ireland on May 10, 1909 to John
and Ann (Kilbridge) Brophy. On July 21, 1936 in Freeport, Ill. she married
Thomas Franklin Lewis. He died March 29, 1980. She left Ireland to make her home
in the U. S. in Freeport, Ill. She had moved to Chicago in 1950, then in 1951
moved to Kendallville. She had been a nurse’s aide and LPN at the Lutheran
Home for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church. Surviving are 4 sons, Thomas of South Bend, Jack and Dan of
Kendallville, and Kevin of Columbia, S. C.; a sister, Phyllis Arnold of
Kendallville; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by an infant daughter, Mary; a sister, Essie; and 2 brothers, Jack and

Lewis Raymond, 70, died Sunday in McCray Hospital, Kendallville. He
was born in Wharton, W.Va. to Lafayette and Ivory (Perry) Lewis. On Aug.
8, 1981 in Kendallville he married Anna Mills. He retired in 1990 from
Kendallville Foundry after 35 years and was a WW II U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Mary Stanley, Kathy Marquart and Faye Manns
of Kendallville and Jeanne Felder of Shipshewana; a son, Donald of Garrett; a
stepdaughter; 2 sisters, Clara Mae Lewis of Lexington, Ky., and Audrey Hicks of
Sauersville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A sister,

Lewis Sean Patrick, 332 Sylvan Lake, died Sunday at
Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born in Kendallville Friday,
the son of Daniel Patrick and Kathryn Ann (Kingsley) Lewis. Also surviving are
the grandparents, Charles and Jean Kingsley, Michigan City, In., and Frank and
Myra Lewis, Kendallville. A prayer service was set for Feb. 2 at

Ley Carl A, 77, was born May 6, 1898 in Avilla to Oliver and Elizabeth (Zonker)
Ley and married Catherine Rose Bapst Oct. 10, 1922 in Garrett. She died in 1969.
In December 1972 he married Marjorie Miller, who died last February. He was a
lifetime area resident and retired grocer, operating Ley’s Home Store in
Kendallville for 41 years. He resided at R. 3, Royer Lake, LaGrange, and died
Thursday in Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph, Mich. Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. Richard (Georgianna) Dudding, St. Joseph, Mich.; one son, Jon Thomas Ley,
R. 1, Kendallville; 2 sisters, Loretta and Esther Ley, Bakersfield, Calif.;
one brother, Urban, Fort Wayne; 6 grandchildren. Four brothers and 2 sisters

Ley Charles E, 89, of Garrett died March 4, 2011, at Provena Sacred Heart Home in
Avilla. He was born November 12, 1921, in Avilla, Ind., to William L. and Ethel (Aman) Ley. He married Victoria
Bonkoski on June 22, 1946, in Garrett, and she died April 30, 1979.
He worked as a car inspector on the B&O Railroad for 34 years,
retiring in 1983. He was a WW II Army veteran. He was a member of
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avilla, Knights of Columbus Council 1790 in
Garrett, Garrett Eagles and the Avilla American Legion Post 240.
Survivors include two daughters and a son: Peg Gaar of Garrett, Connie
Ley of Fort Wayne, and Joe Ley of Garrett; grandchildren Julie (Ron) Regazzi,
Travis (Christina) Gaar, Nicholas (Amanda) Ley serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq,
and Michal and Madison Ley of Auburn; his great-grandchildren, Victoria and
Matthew Regazzi of Leo, and Connor and Kaylee Gaar of Garrett; 2 brothers and a
sister: Victor (Ursula) Ley and Don (Mary) Ley, both of Avilla, and Teresa

Ley David L, 17-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ley, R. 2, Avilla was
killed Sunday when the car he was driving missed a curve
and hit a tree along State Road 3, a mile north of LaOtto. He apparently fell
asleep at the wheel and struck a tree head-on. He was a junior at East Noble
High School where he was in the upper third of his class and had recently been
chosen to attend the 1971 session of Hoosier Boys State by the Avilla American
Legion. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he served as
acolyte and was vice president of the CYO. He was active in the Future Farmers
of America, serving as an officer, and was employed at the Dairy Queen in
Kendallville. Born March 21, 1954, in Garrett Hospital, he was a lifelong
resident of this community. Surviving in addition to the parents are one sister,
Mrs. John (Rita) Eagleson, Columbia City; eight brothers, Lawrence, R. 2,
Avilla, Phillip, S. Main St., Avilla and Leo, Giles, Vincent, Robert, Anthony
and Urban, at home; the grandparents, William Marti, R. 1, Avilla, and, Mr. and
Mrs. William Ley, R. 2, Avilla; and two nieces. Final rites Wednesday

Ley Edward C, 86, Kendallville, died last Tuesday in McCray Hospital. Born in Whiting, Iowa, Oct. 11, 1883, he was the son
of Oliver and Elizabeth (Zonker) Ley. He had resided in Kendallville for 60
years, moving there from Avilla. He was married on June 27, 1911, in Garrett to
Mary E. Weaver, who survives. A retired cabinet maker, he had been employed at
McCray Refrigeration Co. for 41 years. Prior to that he worked for Flint &
Walling Mfg. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and
the McCray 20-Year Club. Surviving in addition to the widow are one son, Eugene
E., Medford, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Virginia) Wilondek,
Kendallville, and Mrs. Mac (Margaret) McMarrell, Eureka, Mont.; seven

Ley Esther M, 89, died Thursday at her residence in Jim Dandy Court,
Avilla. She was born in Avilla June 17, 1896, the daughter of Oliver and
Elizabeth (Ueber) Ley. She was a 1922 graduate of St. Joseph School of
Nursing in Fort Wayne and received her B.S. degree in nursing from Indiana
University in 1954. A retired R.N., she had been a public health nurse in Fort
Wayne and for Kern County, Bakersfield, Calif. She was a member of St. Mary’s
Catholic Church. Surviving are a sister, Loretta, Avilla; a brother, Urban, Fort
Wayne. Five brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Monday services at

Ley Ethel L, 81, was born May 7, 1893 to John and Bertha Aman. She
married William L. Ley March 4, 1919 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mr. Ley
died Jan. 25 of this year. She was the last member of a family of 16 brothers
and sisters. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Avilla American
Legion Auxiliary. A lifetime resident of Avilla, she died Sunday in Sacred Heart

Ley Eugene E, 89, died Oct. 22, 2001 at Providence Medford Medical
Center, Medford, Ore. A Kendallville High School graduate, he served in
the Army Air Corps during WW II. He was a member of Immaculate Conception
Church in Kendallville. He was born April 25, 1912 in Kendallville to
Edward C. and Mary (Weaver) Ley. On May 9, 1959 he married Marion
Winningham. Surviving are his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and
Ken Wymer; and a granddaughter, Jamie; 2 sisters, Virginia Wilondek of
Kendallville and Margaret McMarrell; and many grandchildren and

Ley Francis A "Frank", 84, Railroad St., died Tuesday at Garrett Hospital. A lifelong resident of Avilla, he was born Feb. 17,
1887, the son of Oliver and Elizabeth (Zonker) Ley. He was married on June 19,
1914 in St. Mary’s Church to Mayme Schlotter. She preceded him in death on
July 30, 1967. He was a retired painter and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic
Church and its Holy Name Society. Survivors include two sons, Jerome and
Francis, both R. 2, Avilla; Mrs. Argyl (Pearl) Rhodes, Mrs. William (Eileen)
Davenport, Mrs. James (Martha) Ross, Mrs. John (Mary Jane) Stoner, Mrs. Harold

Ley Francis E "Sackie", 61, died May 11, 1992 at McCray
Hospital, Kendallville. He was born Sept. 26, 1930 in Avilla to Frank and
Mayme (Schlotter) Ley. He and his wife, Grace, were married on July 24,
1959 in Angola. He retired as an inspector for International Harvester in
1981. He was a Korean Conflict veteran, a member of VFW 2749, UAW 57
Retirees, American Legion Post 240 and Moose Lodge 2026. Surviving are his
wife; a daughter, Sandy Kowall of Fort Wayne; 3 sons, Larry of St. Cloud, Fla.,

Ley John W, 74, died March 29, 1999 due to a car/train crash on the CSX
tracks at 100N, Avilla. He was born Oct. 19, 1924 in Avilla to William and
Ethel (Aman) Ley. He was a lifetime Avilla area resident and president of
John Ley Monument over 40 years. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran, a 4th
degree Knight, Fort Wayne, and Knights of Columbus, Garrett; and a member of
American Legion Post 240, Avilla. He married Margaret Marti on May 7, 1947
in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kendallville. Surviving are
his wife; 8 sons and one daughter, Larry of Zionsville, Phil of Avilla, Rita
Eagleson of Naperville, Ill., Leo of Naperville, Giles of Avilla, Vince of
Williamsburg, Kansas, Bob and Tony of Avilla, and Urban of Kendallville; 17

Ley Joseph C, 52, of Garrett, died May 15, 2012. He was an electrician for the Electrical Workers Local Union 305 in Fort
Wayne. He was a graduate of Garrett High School. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garrett and was a member of the
Garrett Eagles.
He was born July 20, 1959 in Garrett to Charles and Victoria (Bonkoski) Ley.
They preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Nicholas (Amanda) Ley of Fort Hood, Texas, and
Michal Ley of Auburn; a daughter, Madison Ley of Auburn; and two sisters, Peg

Ley Loretta A, 93, Jim Dandy Court, Avilla, died Tuesday at
Sacred Heart Home. She was born in Avilla April 11, 1894, the daughter of Oliver
J. and Elizabeth (Zonker) Ley. She was a retired registered nurse and had lived
in Bakersfield, Calif. for many years before moving back to Avilla in 1975. She
was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Avilla, its Rosary Society and the
Retired Nurses Association. Surviving are several nieces and nephews; one
brother, Urban of Fort Wayne. Five brothers and four sisters preceded her in

Ley Margaret E, 84, died Nov. 15, 2010 at Parkview Noble Hospital.
She was born in Kendallville on June 11, 1926, the daughter of William and
Bertha (Schenher) Marti. She graduated from Avilla High School in
1944. On May 7, 1947 she married John W. Ley in Kendallville. He
died March 29, 1999. She and her husband owned and operated John Ley
Monuments in Avilla since 1968. She retired in 2001. She was a
member of St. Mary Ctholic Church and Avilla American Legion Post Women's

Ley Marjorie Miller, 73, died Tuesday in Miller’s Merry
Manor, LaGrange. She was born Jan. 7, 1902 in Kendallville to John Adam and Emma
Matilda (DeHoff) Hess. She married Dewey C. Miller Oct. 15, 1921. He died Dec.
17, 1960. On Dec. 28, 1973 she married Carl Ley. She served eight years as Noble
County treasurer. Before assuming public office she was bookkeeper at the Avilla
Lumber Company and at one time was an active member of the Avilla BPW Club.
Surviving are her husband at Royer Lake, LaGrange; a son, Dean Miller, Woodland,
Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Ann Weatherford, Deming, N.M.; a brother, Paul,
Kokomo; a sister, Mrs. Alice Rohr, Charleston, W. Va.; and 8 grandchildren.

daughter of Frank and Louise (Cuney) Schlotterer, but had lived most of her life
in the Avilla area. On June 19, 1914, she was married to Frank Ley at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Avilla. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and
its Rosary Society. Survivors include the husband, two sons, Jerome and Francis;
six daughters, Mrs. Argyl (Pearl) Rhodes, Mrs. William (Eileen)

Theresa Schiffli Bapst in Garrett. She was married Oct. 10, 1922 to
Carl A. Ley, who survives. She had been a resident of Kendallville for 47 years.

Ley Urban A, 92, died Wednesday in Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. A
native of Avilla, he lived most of his life in Fort Wayne. He was a
foreman at International Harvester in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1964. He was
a member of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
His wife, Clotilda, died in 1964. Surviving are a daughter, Sara Todd of
Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral Saturday in

81, of Avilla, died September 20, 2013 at Presence Sacred Heart Home in
Avilla. She was born July 25, 1932 in Garrett to Louis and Mildred C. (Slusher)
Vanderbosch. She married Victor J. Ley on October 10, 1953 in Garrett. She
was the deputy matron and director of food service for the Noble County
Sheriff’s Department for 11 years, retiring in 1999. She was a member of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Avilla, the Rosary Society, Associate of the
Franciscan Sisters, Democratic Women’s Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary
in Avilla. She is survived by her husband; 5
daughters, Christine Emerick of Plymouth, IN, Denise Fanger of Avilla, Laura
Rudd of Westland, MI, Sharon Kacprowicz of Ft. Wayne and Nancy Reinhardt of
Macomb, MI; 4 sons, Michael Ley of Auburn, James Ley of Rome City, Steven Ley
of Jefferson, GA and Patrick Ley of Kendallville; 2 brothers, Henry
Vanderbosch of Garrett and Leonard Vanderbosch of Colbert, WA; a sister,
Jeanette Lloyd of Avilla; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great
grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, James, Thomas and David
Vanderbosch. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held September 23, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avilla. Burial, St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Ley Victoria J, 59, and her grandchild, Jeffrey L. Gaar, were killed
Monday when a pickup truck collided broadside with the car in which they
were riding at the intersection of SR. 327 and 205. The accident occurred about
10 a.m. and both were dead at the scene of massive head injuries. It was
determined her vehicle had the right-of-way. She was a lifetime resident of
Garrett and was born there Oct. 22, 1919, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Bonkoski. She married Charles Ley of Avilla June 22, 1946 and they lived at 216
W. Houston St. in Garrett. Survivors include her father; her husband; two
daughters, Mrs. Terry (Margaret) Gaar, Garrett, the driver of the vehicle,
Connie Ley, at home; and one son, Joseph, at home; one grandchild; three
sisters, Mrs. Joan Carteaux, Garrett, Mrs. Ronald Shull, Auburn, and Mrs. Edward
Kinney, Bryan, Ohio. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Garrett. Double funeral services for her and her grandson today in St. Joseph Church in Garrett. Burial, St. Mary’s Cemetery. ~

Ley William L, 83, a native and lifetime resident of Avilla, was born in
Avilla Jan. 4, 1892 to Oliver and Elizabeth (Ueber) Ley and married Ethel Aman
March 4, 1919 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Ley survives and is a
resident of Sacred Heart Home. He was a farmer, a WW I veteran, a member of St.
Mary’s Church and Avilla American Legion Post 240. He died Saturday in McCray
Hospital. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Teresa Glasgow, Hudson; four
sons, Charles, Garrett, John, R. 1, Avilla, Victor and Donald, R. 2, Avilla; two
sisters, Esther and Loretta in Calif.; three brothers, Gene in Calif., Urban,
Fort Wayne, and Carl, LaGrange; 38 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren preceded him in death. Funeral
mass Monday in St. Mary’s Church. Burial, St. Mary’s Cemetery. ~
