Johanns Starr Faith, 70, died Aug. 20,
2007 at Parkview Whitley Hospital. She was a registered nurse who had
served as director of nursing at Columbia City Nursing Home and Provena Sacred
Heart Home in Avilla, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Trinity United
Methodist Church in Albion and Women of the Moose. She was born in Noble
County on March 13, 1937 to Omar and Annabelle (Longsworth) Rosenogle. She
married Virgial Mathias Johanns on April 10, 1982 in Columbia City.
Surviving are her husband; 7 children and spouses, Patrick and Mary Schaper of
Albion, Tina Elliott of Churubusco, Timothy and Angela Schaper of Kendallville,
Robert and Stacey Schaper of Kimmell, and Lisa and Phil Richmond, Joni and Dave
Smith, Shari and Brian Shively of Columbia City; 2 stepchildren; 21
grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and
Vern Wilson of Albion. She was preceded in death by an infant brother,
Michael Rosenogle; and a grandson, Brad Schaper. Services Friday at
Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial, Christian Chapel Cemetery.

place, was brought here for burial on Saturday. This is the second child Mr. and

Johnson Abram W, 71, died on Thursday at the home of his sister, Mrs.
Mary J. Zimmerman near Wawaka following a two weeks illness from heart disease.
Surviving is another sister, Mrs. Nora Vesore, Detroit, Mich.; and two brothers,
Lewis E. of Thief River, Minn., and Newton O., of Saskatchewan, Can. Funeral Sunday at the Kendallville mortuary. Burial, Ligonier Cemetery. + 1-?-1947
Johnson Albert R, about 71, died May 29, 1947 at his Albion home. He is
survived only by his widow, Edna Brackney Johnson. He was a native of Jefferson
Twp, having been born there Jan. 17, 1876, and had spent his entire life in that
community until about a year and a half ago when he and his wife moved to
Albion, where they had since made their home. Services Sunday at

Johnson Alpheus was born in Medina County, Ohio, on Oct. 15, 1848,
the son of Elijah and Carolyn (Jaquay) Johnson. He was one of eight children - six boys and two girls
- all of whom with the parents have preceded him in
death. He was but a child of four when he came with his family and settled in
Jefferson Twp on the farm since known at the Johnson farm. With the exception of
two years spent in Ill., as a young man, his whole life was spent on his farm,
where he died. On March 24, 1870 he married Mary T. Schauweker, and she died in August 1927. They
had two children, Albert and Mina. Mina was married to Charles Stults and
died in 1910. He died on March 1, being 83 years, 3 months and
16 days of age. Funeral at the home on Friday. Burial, Albion Cemetery.

Johnson Amber Dawn, daughter of David Mullis and Teresa Ann Johnson, 560
N. Wood St., Kendallville, was stillborn Tuesday at McCray
Hospital. Surviving are her parents; grandparents, Rollin and Vongie Johnson of
Kendallville, Barry and Nina Mae Weldy of Shipshewana; great-grandparents, Commodore
Howard, Flint, Mich., and Lula Slone and LaVerne King, Kendallville. Graveside
services today at Lake View Cemetery. + 7-10-1984
Johnson Andrew was born in New York near Buffalo in what was then known
as the "Holland Purchase" Nov. 4, 1813. When quite a small boy he
moved with his father’s family to Portage County, Ohio where he grew to
manhood, then with his 3 brothers he went to the then far west, near Chicago,
Ill., where he remained for some time, when he again returned to Ohio. In 1838
he married Hannah Warner, and they had 4 sons and 6 daughters,
only 4 of whom remain. Three sons and three daughters together with
their mother preceded him in death. The mother died June 2, 1877. In
1849 when Noble County was yet an unbroken forest he moved from Ohio to his late
home, one mile east of Allen Chapel, where he reared his family and remained a
resident for over half a century. He became a member of the Methodist Protestant
Church in 1850. He died Feb. 19, aged 86 years 3 months and 15 days.
Funeral at Allen Chapel Wednesday with interment in the cemetery nearby. ^

Johnson Andrew H, died March 29 in Parkview Hospital. He was born in
Avilla and had lived most of his life in Fort Wayne. He was a WW II Navy veteran
and worked 36 years for International Harvester before retiring in 1966.
Surviving are his wife, Irene; three sisters, Victoria Borkovec, Avilla, Helen
Reynolds, Fort Wayne, and Geraldine Imbody, Garrett. Services March 31 at

Johnson Andrew J, 71, Kendallville, died
today in McCray Hospital. Born July 26, 1903 in Woodburn, he was the son of
Frank and Ida Ireland. He married Marie M. Acker in Fort Wayne June 26, 1932. He
moved to Kendallville from Fort Wayne six years ago. He was a member of United
Brethren Church, Fort Wayne, and a retired employee of Old Fort Industries, Fort
Wayne, where he had worked 48 years. While an employee he served as a union
steward. Surviving are two stepdaughters, Mrs. Donald (Madeline) Sheets, New
Haven, and Mrs. Hawley (Wilma) Krager, Auburn; one stepson, Robert C. Craig,
Harbor City, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Laura) Mills, Fort Wayne, and
Mrs. Elanor Wood, Fort Myers, Fla. Two sisters and three brothers preceded him
in death. Services Thursday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home. Burial,

Johnson Andrew W, son of Andrew and Hannah Johnson, was born near
Kendallville Dec. 27, 1854; and died at Santa Maria, Calif. Aug. 14 at the age
of 38 years 7 months and 10 days. He was married to Sarah Fisher Oct. 1881. She
died life June 2, 1886, leaving the little son Everett, who is now
bereft of father and mother. He then married Cora Bennage of Vistula, Ind. Nov.
25, 1890 who is left with their one-year old daughter Bernice. ^

Johnson Anna L, about 52, (b. 10-8-1911) died Aug. 15, 1964
at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She is survived by her husband, Clarence L.;
two daughters, Mrs. James (Marilyn) Jackson, and Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Cooper, both
of Albion; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Fogle of Portland, Mrs. Mary Wagner of South
Bend, and Mrs. Oma Thornton of Lakeville; one brother, William Berger of
Lakeville; and two grandsons. Funeral Tuesday at St. Mark’s

Johnson Arley, 74, of Perry, Fla., father of Mrs. Roma Appel of
Huntertown, died in Fort Wayne Oct. 31. He had lived in Huntington County and
moved to Florida in 1952 after retiring from farming. Other survivors are a son,
Richard of Fort Wayne; another daughter, Mrs. Gerry Scott of Alton, Mo.; and a
sister, Mrs. James Hughes of Roanoke. Services Nov. 3 in Waynedale. Burial,

Johnson Arnold, 86, of Carmel, died Nov. 20, 2007. A plant staff
supervisor for Indiana Bell, he retired in 1980. A U.S. Army
veteran, he was a member of Carmel American Legion and East 91st St. Christian
Church. He was born May 19, 1921 in Cromwell to Charles and Gertrude
(Reed) Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Carole R. Denslow Johnson; his
children, David and Suzanne Johnson, Gary and Cecelia Johnson and Judy Johnson
Woods; and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife,
Marciel; a brother, Larry; and a sister, Evelyn. Flanner & Buchanan in

Johnson Barbara Ellen, 18-months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman
Johnson of York Twp, died Sunday at the family home from whooping cough and
pneumonia. Surviving are the parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Funeral

Johnson Benton Allen, son of Kitt and Karen Johnson, was stillborn Thursday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Surviving are his
parents; grandparents, Robert Johnson of Huntertown and Melvin and Leona
Bradtmiller of Fort Wayne; great-grandparents, Luella Bradtmiller of Fort Wayne,
and Esther Johnson of LaGrange. Services Saturday in Suburban Bethlehem

Johnson Berniece M, 78, 901 S. State St., died Sunday at
McCray Hospital. She was born in Noble County June 20, 1903 to Frank E. and
Inabelle (Wright) Acker. She married Andrew J. Johnson June 26, 1932 in Fort
Wayne. He died Sept. 3, 1974. She moved from Fort Wayne to Kendallville in 1950
and retired in 1969 as a practical nurse at the Allen County Health Care Center.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Madeline) Sheets, 901 S. State St.; six
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, a son and a sister. Services Wednesday at Berhalter-Hutchins

Johnson Bertha Agnes, 74, died Thursday at Bishop Randall
Hospital. She was born October 7, 1886, in Avilla. In 1908 she moved to New
Mexico with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Vogeding. Her father was helping
build an irrigation system there. Later she went to Cheyenne where she took
nurse’s training at Memorial Hospital, becoming a graduate nurse. There she
met Jim Johnson. They were married May 25, 1918. They lived in Cheyenne until
1931 when they moved to Lander. Services were held at Sunday morning at the
church. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. She is survived by her husband; 3 sisters, Mrs. Josephine Carmichael of Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. M. L. Lowell of
Albuquerque, N. M., and Miss Louise Vogeding of Denver. Two brothers, Lawrence
of Albuquerque, and Fred, preceded her in death several years ago. ~ 2-2-1961
Johnson Beverly J, 75, died Nov. 4, 2000 at Parkview Noble
Hospital. She was born Oct. 30, 1925 to Howard and Ruth (Johnston)
Kennell. She married Lawrence Johnson on March 22, 1943 in
Kendallville. He died Dec. 24, 1999. A graduate of Kendallville High
School and International Business College, she had retired as a secretary from
Wirco Mfg. In Kendallville. She was a member of Noble County Humane
Society. Surviving are 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Brenda and
Hal and Kerry Johnson of Fort Wayne; a grandson, Adam Johnson, and a
granddaughter, Hayley Johnson. Memorial services Tuesday at Hite Funeral

Johnson Billy L 64, of Ligonier died March 23, 2011, at Avalon Village in Ligonier.
He had worked at Starcraft in Goshen for more than 25 years prior to his
retirement. He was a member of the
Wawasee Lakeside Chapel. He was
born November 25, 1946, in Wolf Lake to Charles E. and Effie (Brown) Johnson.
Surviving are his former wife, Jeane Pauley of Albion; two sons, Matthew
(Shawn) Johnson of Syracuse, and Andrew (April) Johnson of Cromwell;
grandchildren, Chase, Mandy, Drew, Ian and Van Johnson; and three siblings,
Lester (Skinny) Barnard of Westville, Ind., Charles (Paula) Johnson of Bartlett,
Tenn., and Mary Jane Hare of Fort Myers, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Dean Johnson.

Johnson Brian D, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Johnson, R. 2, was hit
and killed Aug. 15 when he ran into the path of a car. He and a companion were
waiting to cross U. S. 33 just north of State Road 9 in Merriam when the
accident occurred. Services were Monday in the Smith Funeral Home in Columbia
City. Survivors include the parents, three sisters and grandparents. + 8-15-1975
Johnson Capitola, 73, died Thursday in Betz Nursing Home,
Auburn. She formerly made her home at R. 2, Churubusco. She was born Nov. 29,
1908 to Harold and Kate (Lee) Simmons in Ballard County, Ky. On Nov. 1, 1926 she
married J. Ellsworth Johnson, who preceded her in death. Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Charles (Sharon) Robbins Jr., Auburn, and Mrs. Roger (Charlotte)
Duncan, R. 2, Churubusco; two sons, Roderick C., R. 2, Albion, and James D., R.
2, Churubusco; two brothers, Harold D., LaCenter, Ky., and Herbert, Wickliffe,
Ky.; 16 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Funeral in Krider-Workman

Johnson Carrie Etta, daughter of John and Elizabeth Miller, was born Nov.
16, 1871 in Noble County where she married Eugene G. Johnson April 22, 1890.
They had 3 sons. In 1895, with her family, she moved to
Chicago where she remained until about a year ago when she again moved to her
recent home in Hastings, Neb. where she died Nov. 5, aged 27 years
11 months and 29 days. She leaves her husband, 3 sons, father, mother, 4 sisters
and 2 brothers. Funeral Wednesday at the Evangelical Church. Burial, Mt.

Johnson Catherine A was born near Kendallville, on May 7, 1856 and
died at her home in Albion, July 28, 1931, being 75 years, two months and
21 days old. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Elinor Hill and was one of
five children, all of whom with the parents have died except one sister,
Mrs. Elizabeth Emerick living in Churubusco. In the year 1872 she was married to
Henry W. Johnson and they had three children, all of whom are living.
They are Marley W. of Chicago, Mrs. Alice E. Budd of Burr Oak, and Thomas G., at
home. There are 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. For many years she
was a member of the Burr Oak Baptist Church. She and her husband lived together
for nearly 59 years in and near Albion. Funeral at the home

Johnson Cecil W, 79, of Ligonier, died Nov. 25, 2008 at his
residence. He retired from Dana Corp. after 33 years of service and worked
for the Ligonier Parks & Recreation Dept. He served in the U.S. Air
Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post
243 in Ligonier and Millersburg Church of Christ. He was born April 11,
1929 in Noble County to Cecil W. and Lottie (Vance) Johnson. Surviving are
his wife, Imogene (West); a granddaughter, Mandy Woodruff; and 3
great-grandchildren, Alaina, Callum and Raven. He was preceded in death by
a son, Kirby; and a brother, Raymond. Service private. ^ 11-27-2008
Johnson Cecil Mrs., 24, of R. 2, Ligonier, was killed when she
fell out of an automobile driven by her husband Monday. The
accident happened on a county road three and one-half miles south of Ligonier.
The couple was riding in their 8-year old sedan when the door on the right side
came open. She apparently was leaning against the door when it opened, and she
fell out onto the road. She suffered a broken neck in the accident. The husband and two small sons survive. + 2-?-1936
Johnson Cecil W, 47, ended his life with a 12-gauge shotgun in the garage
at his home here Monday as his wife, Grace, was packing his
dinner preparatory to his leaving for work at Kendallville where he was employed
as a cement worker at the new North Side School under construction. The coroner
said Mr. Johnson, who apparently had been under severe nervous tension most of
Sunday, went to bed about 8:45 Sunday night, then got up about 5:30 a.m. Monday.
He went to the garage with his shotgun about an hour later after telling his
wife he had heard a rat gnawing in the garage. She heard the gun fired a short
time later and went to the garage where she found her husband dead. He was born
in Benton City, Mo. on July 1, 1907, the son of Charles and Etta (Newberry)
Johnson, and had resided in Cromwell about fifteen years. Surviving are the
widow; two sons, Cecil Jr., Ligonier, and Raymond D., Goshen; two grandchildren;
seven brothers, Claude and Walter of Ligonier, Lyman and Howard of Albion,
Elwood of Fort Wayne, Theodore of Cromwell, and Lester of Farmersburg; four
sisters, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Kendallville, Mrs. Ruby Havens, Grassy Creek, Ky.,
and Mrs. Hazel Miller and Mrs. Ethel Robinson of Cromwell. Services Wednesday in

Johnson Celeste V, 66, of Fort Wayne, died in Lutheran Hospital Dec. 27
and services were Dec. 30. She is survived by her husband, Harry; a daughter,
Shirley B. of Fort Wayne; a son, Charles of Yoder, four sisters, Mrs. Jean
Hartman of Huntertown, Mrs. Juanita Bunnell of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Ione Ervin

Johnson Clarence L, 66, of Albion, died Nov. 23, 1972 in the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born Jan. 23,
1906 in Minnesota, the son of Morris and Oliva Johnson. He was married to Anna
Berger on Oct. 12, 1930. She died in 1964. He was a general excavator and was
co-owner of the car wash and had been a member of the Albion town board. He is
survived by two daughters, Mrs. James (Marilyn) Jackson of R. 3, Albion, and
Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Cooper of R. 2, Albion; three sisters, Mrs. Jacob (Lucille)
Sahli of Key Largo, Fla., Mrs. Leo (Mabel) Gates of Montevideo, Minn.,
and Mrs. Lynn (Lyla) Weilberg of Mason, Minn.; one brother, Jacy. Funeral

Johnson Claude R, 77, died Tuesday in his home in Gary. He was born
Jan. 22, 1913 in Noble County, the son of Charles and Etta (Newberry)
Johnson. On June 29, 1963 in Wawaka he married Evelyn Moseman. He
retired in 1978 from Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill, Gary, and was a member of
Ligonier Eagles Lodge 1763. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters, Mrs.
Robert (Patricia) Crumley of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Howard (Lois) Genz of
Bentonville, Ark., and Mrs. Larry (Linda) Hartzler of Ligonier; a son, H. Dean
Johnson of LaGrange; a sister, Ruth Brown of Avilla; 3 brothers, Lyman of
Albion, Elwood of Cromwell and Theodore of Avilla; 7 grandchildren and 6
great-grandchildren. Three brothers and 3 sisters preceded him in

Johnson Cora W, 89, died Monday in Kenney Health Care Center,
Ligonier. She was born Sept. 12, 1901 in Moorehead, Ohio, the daughter of
George and Emma (Moore) McClure. She married Elmer Schlabaugh and then
Herbert Wolf, who both preceded her in death. She married third, Elwood
Johnson. She was employed by Essex Wire Co. in Ligonier and was a member
of Kimmell United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; 2
daughters, Geraldine Debrular of Cromwell and Charlotte Hayden of Hudson, Fla.;
a son, Carl Schlabaugh of Hudson, Fla.; a sister, Alma Kell of New Mexico; 2
brothers, Robert McClure of Mishawaka and Woody McClure of New Mexico; 4
grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Betty, and a son,
Russell, also preceded her in death. Services Thursday in Ulrey-Renner

Johnson Dailynn R, 27 days old, died March 26, 2013, in Fort Wayne. She
was born February 27, 2013, in Fort Wayne to Robert and Carey (Pollard) Johnson.
Surviving are her parents and a
brother, Laithen Johnson, all of Cromwell, and her grandmothers, Nancy
Owen and Lawanna Wolfe, both of Wawaka. Funeral March 30 at Yeager

Johnson Darlene, 60, of Ligonier, died April 11, 2009 at her
residence. She was born Feb. 7, 1949 in Seymour to Walter and Elsie
(Barger) Riley. She married James Johnson on July 2, 1965. She
retired from Kidd & Co. in Ligonier and was a member of the Baptist Church
and the American Legion Auxiliary in Ligonier. Surviving are her husband;
daughters Christina (Edward) Gillespie of Albion, Elsie Weldy of Ligonier and
Thelma (Tony) Chavez of Goshen; 5 grandchildren, Cheyenne and Adriana Weldy,
Anthony, Ethan and Nicholas Chavez; one brother and 4 sisters. She was
preceded in death by a son, James Jr. in 1983; 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Johnson E Virginia, 72, died Tuesday in Ball Hospital, Muncie. She
was born in Noble County to Leonard and Mary (Barr) Johnson. She graduated
from Wolf Lake High School in 1942 and Ball State Teachers College in
1946. She owned and operated Fagala Real Estate, Property Management and
Tax Service and was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church and OES No.
104. Surviving are a sister, Mary Alice Mazelin of Kingman, Ariz.; 3
brothers, Donald of Odenton, Md., James of Columbia City, and Norman of Fort
Wayne. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice. Funeral
Saturday in Meeks Mortuary, Muncie. Burial, Christian Chapel

Johnson Edna I, 85, of R. 2, Albion, died Monday (d.8-8-1988) in Whitley County Hospital. Born Jan. 30, 1903 in Cromwell, she
was the daughter of Ellsworth and Cora (Hontz) Firestone. On June 16, 1921 in
Albion she married Lyman Johnson. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist
Church, Eagles Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge. Surviving are her husband; three
daughters, Mrs. Billy (Roberta) Fisher, Ligonier, Lucille Weeks and Mrs. Harry
(Phyllis) Wells, both Albion; two sons, Robert C. and Paul L., both Albion; a
brother, Roger, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Johnson Elva, 57, a Lake Wawasee widow residing at Kale Island, was
killed Wednesday when her car crashed into a bridge abutment on
the Elkhart County side of the Elkhart-Kosciusko County Line Road three miles
east of Syracuse. She was on her way home from work as a waitress at Moser Truck
Stop at Ligonier and evidently fell asleep. An inquest was held at a Syracuse

Wayne. He was born Nov. 13, 1914 in Noble County, the son of Charles and
Etta (Newberry) Johnson. He was a farmer and a member of Kimmell United
Methodist Church. His wife, Cora, died Oct. 8. Surviving are a
daughter, Nancy Wheeler of Fort Wayne; 2 sons, G. C. of LaOtto and Daniel R. of
Hicksville, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Brown of Avilla; 2 brothers, Lyman of Albion
and Teddy of Avilla; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services

Johnson Enoch George, 70, died at his home in this city Sunday
of kidney trouble. He was a native of Virginia and after spending his boyhood
days on a farm in Jefferson Twp, he learned the carpenter trade and
established himself as a contractor and builder. In 1858 he constructed the old
school house, and in 1859 he built the first M. E. Church in this city. Funeral
was held from the residence Tuesday afternoon. Burial, Lake View Cemetery. He
was born in W. Va. July 13, 1831 and died at Kendallville July 28, aged 70 years
and 15 days. He leaves his widow, 2 sons and one daughter. Among those attending
the funeral was a son, William C. of Springfield, O. ^ 8-2-1901
Johnson Ethel, 86, 200 Iddings St., died at Kendallville Nursing Home Wednesday
(d. 11-23-1972). Born in Orleans, Feb. 27, 1887, she was
the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Taylor) Parish and had lived in
Kendallville 43 years, coming from Owensville. On March 10, 1909 she was married
to Fred Johnson at Sullivan. He died Oct. 30, 1968. She was a member of Mary
Martha Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem, OES 122, and Faith United Methodist
Church. Her only survivors are nieces, nephews and cousins. Two brothers and one
sister preceded her in death. Funeral Saturday at Berhalter-Hutchins

Johnson Ethel, 92, of R. 1, Wawaka, died Sunday at her
residence. The daughter of Fabian and Ida Erickson, she was born March 24, 1890
in Dover, Ill. On Jan. 25, 1912 in Princeton, Ill., she married Elmer Johnson,
who died in 1961. A resident of Noble County 63 years, she was a member of the
Wawaka United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Herman (Alice)
Yeager of Wawaka; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. Services Wednesday at Ulrey Funeral Home,

Johnson Etta Maude, about 73, died Feb. 8, 1952 of carcinoma at
the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Robinson at Cromwell. Surviving are three

and Mrs. Ruth Brown of Kendallville; eight sons, Lyman of Albion, Walter of

Johnson Eunice (Stevens), mother of Mrs. George S. Binckley, died at
6:30. She was born Feb. 22, 1818 and
was 89 years and 9 months. The place of her nativity was Rochester, N.Y. She was
a member of a large family, all of whom preceded her in death. Her husband, L.
H. Johnson, and she came from Kendallville to make their home with their
daughter in Kenton 15 years ago. The other children of the deceased, a daughter,
Mrs. Allen of Kendallville, died about 23 years ago; and a son, William,
died in 1872. For many years she had been a residence of Kendallville and was a
member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral will be Wednesday. Pallbearers
will be 5 grandchildren, George, Will, Herbert and Merwin Allen of Fort Wayne,
and Harry Binckley of Kenton. Burial will be made beside the graves of her

Johnson Eva V, 62, of R. 2, Albion, died Sept. 16 in St. Joseph’s
Hospital. She was a native of Va., born Dec. 22, 1915 to Newman and Nannie
Stewart Williams. She married James Johnson Jan. 1, 1950 and they lived in Noble
County near Merriam. She was a 31-year employee of General Electric Co. and a
member of its Quarter Century Club. Survivors are her husband James; a daughter,
Mrs. Robert Bredemeyer of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren; her mother, Mrs.
Nannie Williams of Charleston, W. Va.; four brothers, Cecil of Chicago, George
of Charleston, Jack of Ohio, and Charles of Mentor, Ohio; and two sisters, Mrs.

Johnson Florence M, 79, 707 S. Main St., died this morning in
McCray Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1892 in Youngstown, Ohio to James and
Elizabeth (Williams) Thomas and was married in 1914 to Basil Johnson who
preceded her in death. She was a resident here five years, moving from Pleasant
Lake. She was a member of Trinity, a 50-year member of OES and belonged to the
White Shrine. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty McPhearson, Decatur,
Ala.; two sons, Donald T., 707 S. Main St., and Ross Haller Johnson, Cheyenne,
Wyo.; and five grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother preceded her in

Johnson Frank E was born in Chicago, Ill. on Jan. 8, 1868 and died in Ottawa, Ill.
on July 26, 1910 at the age of 42 years 6 months and 7 days. At
the age of 3 he, with his parents, moved to Lockport, Ill., after having lost
their home in the Chicago fire of 1871. His father also died that same winter.
Between 12 and 13 he returned to Chicago, entering the employ of a grocery as a
delivery boy. In 1892 he came to live with his brother at Auburn, Ind., taking
up electrical work with him. He spent some time there, at Butler, Garrett and
Nappanee, and in July 1893 was put in charge of the city electric lighting plant
of Kendallville, where he remained for 17 years. He married Katie Swartz on Aug.
18, 1903, who with one brother, John A. of Elkhart; one half-brother, Victor of
Reading, Pa.; 2 half-sisters, Mrs. Julius Linquist (Nellie), Mrs. J. A. Johnson
(Jennie) of Joliet, Ill. are left. He was a member of the Knights of

Johnson Frank S, 96, died today in his Kendallville residence. He
was born in Wawaka on April 21, 1897 to Dr. A. W. and Carrie (Schrader)
Johnson. On June 11, 1935 in Monroe he married Martha Schuman, who died
July 7, 1984. He was a WW I veteran of the Army Air Corps. He had
been an automobile salesman and a messenger for Purolator Courier, retiring in
1985. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the American
Legion. A sister preceded him in death. A nephew survives.

Johnson G Frank, 88, a retired stone and brick mason, died Oct. 26, 1959 in the Kondas Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 27, 1871 near
Indian Village and had been a lifelong resident of the Albion and Merriam

Johnson Gene S Jr, 32, died Thursday at his Angola residence from an
apparent stroke. His mother, Patricia A. Johnson, 58, of LaGrange,
was stricken by an apparent heart attack while enroute to make his funeral
arrangements and was dead on arrival at McCray Hospital Saturday. Gene was
born June 17, 1967 in Angola, the son of Patricia (Sheley) and Gene S.
Johnson. He had been a sawman for R. P. Wakefield Mold Co. He is
survived by a son, Aaron of Waterloo; 2 brothers, Dennis Johnson of Amarillo,
Texas and Danny Easterday of Ashley; a grandmother, Roxie Sheley of
LaGrange. Patricia was born June 19, 1931 in Topeka, the daughter of
Alfred and Roxie (Lung) Sheley. On Sep 21, 1952 in Dillon, S.C., she
married Gene Johnson. She was a Jehovah's Witness member. Surviving
are her husband; her mother in LaGrange; 2 sons, Dennis Johnson of Amarillo and
Danny Easterday of Ashley; 3 sisters, Nancy Lambright of Ligonier, Linda Heltzel
of LaGrange and Joyce Allen of Angola; 2 brothers, Patrick Sheley of
Kendallville and Alfred Sheley Jr. of LaGrange; and 6 grandchildren.

Johnson George E, 84, died Friday at the Methodist Hospital in Fort
Wayne. He was a former dentist here and later was a leader in dental surgery at
Fort Wayne. Surviving are one son, Paul E. of Minneapolis, Minn.; and one

Johnson Gerald C, 86, died Feb. 14, 1993 at Parkview Hospital, Fort
Wayne, from injuries received in an auto accident in early February. He
was born March 7, 1906 in Teegarden to Owen and Dora (Grile) Johnson. On
Dec. 30, 1937 in Wawaka he married Ruth N. Schwab, who died in 1973. He
was a carpenter and a member of Ligonier Masonic Lodge and South Bend Scottish
Rite. He was a Republican Precinct Committeeman for many years and was
named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr in 1988. He was a
member of Wawaka United Methodist Church. Surviving are 2 sisters, Myrtle
Campbell of Elkhart and Donnabelle Strang of Plymouth; a brother, Russell of

Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. She had been a resident of Kendallville since 1936
after moving here from Albion. She was born April 13, 1900 in Noble County to
Charles and Zora (McClelland) Reed. She married Charles Johnson Oct. 28, 1916 in
Noble County. He preceded her in death June 20, 1962. One daughter also preceded
her in death. Surviving are two sons, Arnold C., Carmel, and Lawrence, R. 1,
Albion; two sisters, Mrs. Leone Johnson, Kimmell, and Mrs. Blanche Campbell,
Kendallville; three brothers, Darrel, Donald and Dallas, all of Amberg,

Center. He was born in Wolf Lake on Aug. 6, 1922 to Shelby and Cordelia
(Bach) Johnson. He married Arla F. Greenman on Dec. 31, 1951 in
Angola. He was a car salesman in Kendallville, retiring in 1980. He
graduated from Wolf Lake High School and was a member of Kendallville Kiwanis
Club and Elks Lodge No. 1194. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and
sons-in-law, Melody and Dan Belschner of Kendallville and Janice and Ron
Williams of Los Angeles; a son, Kevin of Kendallville; a sister, Mae Cunningham
of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a granddaughter, Crystal and Duane Handshoe of
Kendallville; a grandson, Corey and Sarah Culler of Kendallville; a grandson,
James Williams of Los Angeles; a granddaughter, Debbie Williams of Los Angeles;
and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Robert,

Johnson Hannah, 58 years, 11 months and 18 days, died June 2. Hannah
Warner, when young, moved with her father from York State to Portage County,
Ohio, where she married Andrew Johnson with whom she came to Indiana somewhat
over 30 years since; nearly all of which later residence has been in Noble
County. During the 25 last years she has been a member of Allen Chapel Class.
The funeral services were held at Allen Chapel at which cemetery the body was

Johnson Harold D, 49, of Fort Wayne, brother of Gerrold Johnson of
Huntertown, died in Parkview Hospital Oct. 28. He was a retired auto service
mechanic at Sears Roebuck & Co. He was born in Gleason, Tenn., and lived in
Fort Wayne 30 years. Other survivors are his wife, Arlene; and a son, David of

Johnson Helen E, 84, died Saturday at the Ligonier Health Care
Center. She was born July 4, 1908 in Kansas, the daughter of John and Cora
(Reed) Hossinger. She married Stanley Johnson, who died in 1990. She
served as postmaster in Cromwell from 1954 to 1956. Surviving are a son,
John of Gainesville, Fla. Three brothers preceded her in death.

Johnson Henry W was born in Noble County Sept. 13, 1849, the son of
John and Sarah Johnson. In Dec. 1872 he married Catherine E. Hill and they had 3
children, Marley and Thomas Johnson and Mrs. George Budd of Albion.
There are 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild also
surviving. All of his life was spent in or near Albion. After his wife’s death
in July 1931 he has made his home with his daughter and family near Burr Oak and
more recently in Albion. He died March 31, being 86 years, 6 months and

Tri-County Publishing in Churubusco and The News-Sun. He was a veteran of the
Korean Conflict, a member of the Moose, VFW, and American Legion Post 86 in

born Jan. 20, 1909 in Sikeston, Mo., the son of Charles and Etta Mae
Johnson. He married Mary E. Grogg in 1964. He had lived in the Albion area most
of life and was retired from the Noble County Highway Department, was a member
of the Wesleyan Church in Albion and the Kendallville Eagles Lodge. Surviving
are his wife; 4 daughters, Betty Clouse, Albion, Beatrice Epert,
Syracuse, Lottie Ley, Houston, Texas, and Loretta Gosnell, Fort Wayne;
six sons, Delbert and Kenneth, Albion, Roger and Harold, Avilla, and Jack and
Wesley, Kendallville; and their mother, the former Laverne King; three sisters,
Ruth Brown, Albion, Ethyl Robinson, Ligonier, and Ruby Vennesee, Auburn; four
brothers, Theodore, Avilla, Layman, Albion, Claude, Gary, and Elwood, Kimmell;

Johnson James L, 17, Ligonier, was pronounced dead at
the scene Sunday following a one-car accident near Ligonier. The vehicle
was traveling east on River Road at a high rate of speed when the driver failed
to negotiate a curve. The driver is being held in the Noble County jail pending
charges. Johnson was the son of James L. and Darlene (Riley) Johnson, born April
12, 1966 in Scottsburg. He moved to Ligonier six years ago from Hamilton, Ohio.
He was employed by the Elkhart County CETA program. Surviving are the parents;
three sisters, Christina, Elsie and Thelma, all at home; grandparents, Eveline
Johnson of Scottsburg and Walter Riley of Hamilton, Ohio. Services

County, Ky. to Charlie and Eveline (Jones) Johnson. He married Darlene Riley on

Johnson James R, 86, of Merriam, died Sept. 9, 2006 at Shepherd of the
Hill in Kendallville. He was born Sept. 30, 1919 in Fort Wayne to Walter
and Fannie (Stangland) Johnson. He worked at Dana Spicer Axle in Fort
Wayne for 32 years. On Jan. 1, 1950 he married Eva Bobbish. She died
Sept. 16, 1978. On Oct. 5, 1991 he married Kathleen M. Martinenko.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. His great-grandfather, John
Johnson, served in the War of 1812; his grandfather, William Johnson was in the
Union Army during the Civil War. Surviving are his wife and 3

Johnson Jay J, 27, High Lake, died in an apparent hit-run accident on CR
500W in Noble Twp. It was Noble County’s first traffic fatality of 1983. He
had gone for a walk in the early hours of Jan. 1and was noticed later lying near
the road by a passing motorist. He died in surgery in Parkview
Hospital. He was born in Fort Wayne and raised in Whitley County. On Oct. 1,
1982 he married Deborah L. Hexamer in Albion. Surviving are his parents; his
wife; a daughter, Jessie, and a son, J. J., both of Columbia City; two
stepdaughters, Lisa and Ellen Jo Treace, and a stepson, Danny Trease, all at

Fort Wayne. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and

Pearl (Fisher) Ott. She married Howard C. Dice Aug. 16, 1925. He
died Jan. 15, 1962. She married James Johnson Oct. 15, 1963. He died
July 12, 1993. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Max
Smith of Churubusco and Martha and Don Doster of Fort Wayne; 3 sons and
daughters-in-law, Keith and Joyce and Eldon and Barbara Dice of Fort Wayne, and

Johnson John was born in Sugar Creek, Chenango County, Pa. June 16, 1822,
and died at his home in Kendallville March 3, aged 80 years 9 months and 13
days. He moved in early life with his parents to Noble County. He married
Sarah Ross June 23, 1848. They had 2 sons and one daughter. His
wife died in 1890. In 1891 he married Carrie Leins, who with his 3 children, 6
grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren survive. He united with the Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1858 where funeral was held March 5. Burial, Lake View

Johnson John C, son of Daniel and Nancy (Cochran) Johnson, was born in
Wyoming County, New York Dec. 25, 1816 and died at his home in Sparta Twp Nov.
30, 1896, aged 79 years, 11 months and 5 days. He had been a resident of Noble
County over 59 years and was one of the pioneers. In March 1837 he started for
the west, going via Black Rock to Canada, thence to Detroit and on to Lima,
Indiana. He was taken sick at Lima and stopped there. Found some employment and

in Sparta, Section 16. He afterward sold his land or claim in Section 16 and
purchased a farm or the land on which to make a farm in Section 8, Sparta. He
moved and began the founding of a permanent home in 1840, having in the previous
November (1839) been married to Eliza Prentiss, a sister of the
late Nelson Prentiss. They had eight children. He held for about
20 years the office of justice of the peace in Sparta Twp, acted many times as
constable and in other local offices. His children were Milo, Perry, William P.,
Charles W., Ida and Lida, twins (deceased), and Amanda. An infant daughter died

Lake home. He was born Nov. 19, 1924 in Ligonier to Charles and Gertrude
(Reed) Johnson. On March 22, 1946 in Kendallville he married Beverly
Kennell. A U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, he retired in 1983 after 37 years
with Indiana Bell Telephone. He developed Johnson Mobile Home Park in
Kendallville in 1965. He was a member of the Noble County Board of Zoning
Appeals for 10 years and was a member of the American Legion and F&AM Lodge

Johnson Lydia, daughter of William and Elizabeth Brumbaugh, was born in
Kosciusko County, Ind. on Aug. 15, 1841, and died June 18, 1920,
aged 78 years, 10 months and 3 days. She married William
Johnson in 1870. They had seven children, all of whom
survive, Mrs. J. L. Smalley of Center, Colo., Mrs. A. L. Hall and Mrs. J. E.
Lock of Wolf Lake, Mrs. J. P. Slater of Center, Colo., Mrs. Charles Tucker,
Frank and Walter Johnson of Merriam. She leaves one brother of Orting,
Wash., seven children, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. The earlier
part of her life was spent in Kosciusko County near Oswego. After her marriage,
she and her husband resided at Indian Village near Cromwell. In 1882 they moved
to a farm in Noble Twp. She united with the Merriam Church in

June 16, 1921 in the EUB parsonage in Albion he married Edna Firestone.

married Adam Johnson. She was the mother of 8; three are dead. For 35 years she

33 at the main entrance of the Concord Mall Oct. 12. Of 111 Tyler
Place, Ligonier, formerly of Valparaiso, she was a passenger in a 1973 Dodge
driven by her husband Helgie S., 77. She died in Elkhart Hospital about an hour
following the collision. She was born in Warren County on June 9, 1907, a
daughter of Gabriel and Katherine (Stevenson) Pence. She married Helgie Johnson
on June 15, 1946. A retired school teacher working in Bremen, Hobart and East
Gary over a number of years, she was a member of the Valparaiso Methodist Church
and the Valparaiso chapter of DAR. Survivors are her husband and two sisters.

She was born in Jefferson Twp, Noble County, Indiana, on April 17, 1920,
to George and Bertha (Zimmer) Claxton. She graduated from Albion High School in
1938 and married Thomas M. Johnson on August 25, 1939, in Auburn.
Together, she and her husband, Tommy, opened Northside Market in 1940, and he
continued in the grocery business for many years in Kendallville. Tommy died
August 23, 2004.She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Kendallville.
Survivors include two daughters, Jenny and Richard Smith of New Orleans
and Jody and Richard Nasca of Avilla; three granddaughters, Shayne and Andy
Sipe, Crystal Johnson of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Brittney Schmandt of

Huntington. He was a retired employee of Carriage, Inc., Millersburg, where he
worked in construction. He served in the Marine Corps during WW II. He was a

Johnson Mary T was born in Ashland, O., March 6, 1848 and died at her home in Jefferson Twp Aug. 16, aged 79 years, 5 months and 10 days.
She was the daughter of John and Susannah Schauweker and was one of a family of
three children, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Earle, and one brother, Franklin
Schauweker, surviving her. In March 1870 she was married to Alpheus Johnson.
They had one daughter, Mina, who was Mrs. Charles Stults and died on
Jan. 15, 1920; and one son, Albert, at home, who with the father survive. Being only four years old when she was brought to Indiana, nearly all her
life has been spent near Albion. She was a member of the Lutheran Church at

Johnson Ollie was born June 22, 1881 in Noble County, first child
of William and Ellen DeCamp. She and Leo L. Johnson were married June 22, 1911
and were living in South Bend where he is employed. She is survived by one son,
Dale Bushong. She and her sister and brother-in-law were killed in an auto
accident May 17 at the western edge of Elkhart. They were en route from South
Bend to the home of Will DeCamp near Albion to visit their father and brother
when the accident occurred. Her sister, Alverdia DeCamp McClelland, was born
April 16, 1885 in Albion. She and Pirl McClelland were married Aug. 29, 1914 and
have lived since in Benton Harbor and South Bend. Pirl McClelland was born Dec.
18, 1895 in Pipestone Twp, Berrien County, Michigan, son of Samuel and Alice
McClelland. Survivors in addition to those already mentioned are: William DeCamp
(Mrs. DeCamp, the mother, having died some ten years ago) and brother Ervin,
both of Noble County; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McClelland of South Bend; a brother
Albert, and a sister Cassie of Buchanan, Mich. The obsequies were held at the

Johnson Paul L, 73, of Albion, died Feb. 15, 2011, at Goshen Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 15, 1938, in Noble County to Lyman and Edna
(Firestone) Johnson. On Nov. 16, 1958 in Albion, he married Rhonda Tucker. He
was a Corrections Officer for Chain O’ Lakes Correctional Facility and retired
from there after 17 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a
member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife; 2 sons, Eric (Veronica) Johnson and Richard (Kathy)
Johnson, both of Albion; 4 grandchildren, Corina Williams, Michelle Croft, and
Benjamin and Bob Johnson, 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Roberta Fisher of
Ligonier; and a brother, Robert Johnson of Albion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Johnson, and
three sisters, Lucille Weeks, Barbara Johnson and Phyllis Wells.

home. He was born in Indianapolis on May 17, 1954, the son of Rex A. Johnson Jr

Johnson Richard L, 21, died Jan. 9, 1947 as the result of
battle wounds received while in action against the Germans in Jan. 1945. He was
born in Sparta Twp Sept. 24, 1924. He entered the Army May 31,
1944 and went overseas Nov. 10, 1944. He was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge
and there received several shrapnel wounds to the head and neck. He was
captured and reported as missing in action as of Jan. 18, 1945. In April 1945 he
was rescued from a German prison camp and returned to the states. He was a
rocket launcher with Co. A., 314th Inf. Regt., 79th Infantry Division. He received an honorable discharge from the Army Sept. 20,
1945, with a certificate of disability and returned to his home in York Twp.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Johnson; three sisters, Lucille,
Phyllis Joan and Roberta; and two brothers, Robert and Paul, all at home.

Johnson Robert D, 78, of Kendallville, died April 30, 2004 at
Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center. He was co-owner of Dynamics
Fabricators in Kendallville. A graduate of Buffalo Center High School and
Iowa State College with a degree in industrial arts education, he was a WW II
veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of VFW No. 2749, Eagles Lodge
and American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville. He was born Nov. 1, 1925 in
Swea City, Iowa to Jerome and Blanche (Knutsen) Johnson. On July 26, 1946
he married Marian Young. Surviving are his wife in Fort Wayne; 3 daughters
and sons-in-law, Ramona and George Berg of Willmar, Minn., Jan and Jim Stevenson
of Houston, Texas, and Sue and Len Conley of Fort Wayne; a brother, Jerry of

Johnson Robert Francis, 52, died Wednesday in McCray
Hospital. A farmer, he was born Sept. 17, 1911 in Champaign, Ill., and married
March 10, 1937 in Columbia City. He moved to Avilla area nine years ago from
Roanoke, Ind. Prior to that time he and his family resided in Fort Wayne. He was
a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church where funeral was held Saturday.

Albion she married Walter Johnson who died in 1960. A lifetime area resident,
she retired in 1974 from Essex Wire Corporation, Ligonier and was a member of

Hospital. Born May 7, 1904 in Wawaka, she was the daughter of Charles and Jessie
(Zimmerman) Schwab. She lived her entire life in the Wawaka area and was a
retired school teacher. She was married Dec. 30, 1937 in Wawaka to Gerald
Johnson. Surviving are her husband; two nephews. Three brothers preceded her in

Johnson Sarah was born in Portage County, Ohio April 4, 1839; died in
Allen Twp Aug. 13, aged 59 years 4 months and 9 days. In
1843 the family moved to Allen County, Ind., remaining there about 5 years, then
came with her parents to their present home in Allen Twp. In 1855 she joined the
Methodist Protestant Church. She leaves her father, one brother and 3
sisters. Her mother, 3 brothers and 2 sisters preceded her in death.

Johnson Sarah Childs, aged 92 years, 10 months and 21 days,
died April 6, 1890 at the home of her son near Merriam. A native of Bartley
County, Va., she and her husband, John Johnson, came to Noble County in 1847,
locating near Indian Village. Her husband received a severe injury by falling
off a barn on which he had been at work. From this he never fully recovered and
died a year later. About seven years ago she and her son moved near Merriam,
where she was called "Aunt Sally" by all who knew her. Death was
caused by her gradual wasting away and her remains were interred in Indian
Village Cemetery by the side of her husband, which had always been her request.

died at his home near Burr Oak April 8, 1920, aged 64 years and 23 days. He was
one of a family of three children born to John and Sarah Johnson. Both the
parents are dead, and his brother, Henry W., and sister, Mrs. Hariett Storms of
Mishawaka survive. On Sept. 6, 1877 he married Alice E. Hill.
She died May 17, 1917. He belonged to the Baptist Church at Burr Oak where

Noble Hospital. He was born November 3, 1914 in Booneville to John M. and
Margaret (Bennie) Johnson. He was a 1933 graduate of Kendallville High
School. On May 25, 1939 in Auburn he married Margaret V. Claxton.
Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Jody and Rick Nasca of
Avilla, and Jenny and Richard Smith of Fort Wayne; a son, John of Kendallville;
3 granddaughters, Shayne Sipe and her husband Andy of Harlan, Crystal Johnson of
Kendallville, and Brittney Schmandt of Avilla; and 2 great-granddaughters,
Alexis and Jayde Sipe. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda; and
2 sisters, Mildred Shippy and Lula Mae Johnson. He worked in the grocery
business for more than 3 decades, first building the Northside Market in
1940. In 1954 he built South Side Grocery and in 1960, the IGA
Grocery. He served as Rotary Club president from 1965 to 1966 and was a
former member of the Kendallville Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge. He

previously lived at 604 Dowling St., Kendallville, his home since he was five
years old. He had been a shipping clerk at Flint & Walling for 40 years and
belonged to the Kendallville Gray’s Baseball Team in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
He was born Jan. 7, 1894 in Allen Twp, the son of Lafe and Hattie (Houser)
Johnson. He married Nellie E. Wentz April 29, 1922 in Newtown, Ohio.
Survivors include his widow; one son, Homer, Kendallville; one daughter, Mrs.
Richard (Berniece) Maxson, Kendallville; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death. Services today

Henry W. and Ida M. (Hoff) Johnson. On Oct. 11, 1924 in Pendleton he married
Sara Littler. A 1918 graduate of Kendallville High School and a 1922 graduate of
the University of Illinois School of Floriculture, he had lived in Kendallville
since 1905. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW I and the former owner of Johnson
Floral Co., retiring in 1969. He was a 64-year member of the Kendallville Rotary
Club, Trinity Church United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 86,
Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. James (Luanne) Britten of

Shelby County, Ohio Aug. 16, 1831. He died at his home in Noble Twp Nov. 28, 1917, age 86 years 3 months and 14 days. His parents
and two sisters, Mrs. Jane Graham and Mrs. Rebecca Clingerman, preceded him in
death. His parents moved to Indian Village, Noble County, in 1848.
This country was then little better than a wilderness. He resided here one year
then walked back to Preble County, Ohio, residing there three years, then
returned to Indian Village where he resided until the outbreak of the Civil War.
He enlisted from Noble County as a volunteer and was mustered into the U. S.
Service at Fort Wayne, Ind. on Sept. 24, 1861 as a private of Co. C, 13th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry under Col. Sion S. Bass and Capt. Joseph C.
Braden to serve three years during the war. His company moved from Fort Wayne to
Indianapolis, then to Camp Navine, Kentucky, then to Nashville, Tenn. From this
point it moved to the famous battlefield of Shiloh, arriving April 7, 1862, just
in time to turn Grant’s defeat into victory. The 13th suffered
severely in killed and wounded, including their colonel, Sion S. Bass. Other
battles of note that his company engaged in were Lookout Mountain, Stone River,
Atlanta and Chickamauga. He received an honorable discharge at the
expiration of his term of enlistment, Sept. 29, 1864. He was married to Miss
Liddy Brumbaugh at her home Oct. 8, 1870. They had seven children, Frank, Green Twp, Mrs. Flora Slater
of Center, Colo., Mrs. Della Smalley of Santiago, Calif., Mrs. Mary Lock
of Huntertown, Mrs. Rose Hall of Wolf Lake, Mrs. Blanche Tucker of Noblesville,
and Walter who resides at home. In 1883 he moved his family from Indian Village
to their present home in Noble Twp. He is survived by the wife, children, 8 grandchildren, and
3 great-grandchildren. He united with the United Brethren
Church at Indian Village the year previous to his enlistment in the Civil War.
It was his desire that he might depart this life suddenly. His wish was granted.
The day he died he enjoyed his dinner, an afternoon cigar and supper, and had
lain down on his cot to rest, as was his custom, when he died so quietly

Johnsonbaugh Elizabeth, 84, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hattie
Houbaugh, at Avilla Thursday following an illness due to infirmities
of old age. She is survived an another daughter, Mrs. Julia Mouter of that
place, and three sons, James Ellis of Wallen, Ind., John Ellis of Mich., and
George Ellis of Monticello, where funeral services were held and interment made.

Johnston Amelia Mae, 78, died Sunday in LaGrange Hospital. Born in
Kendallville Nov. 4, 1912, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Hazel Mae
(Potter) Harding. She married James O'Sullivan in Angola on June 18,
1951. He died Jan. 29, 1918. On Nov. 21, 1984 in Cosperville she
married Nelson C. Johnston. She was a member of Cosperville Baptist
Church. Surviving are her husband; her mother in Lisbon; 3 daughters,
Barbara E. Knott Nagy of Blue Island, Ill., Shirley M. Meinberg of Waldron Lake,
Rome City, and Irene M. Chilcote of Pleasant Lake; 2 half-sisters, Virginia
Potts of Upper Lake, Calif., and Shirley Sampson of Greenville, Texas; one
half-brother, Richard Ruppert of Lisbon; 12 grandchildren and several great and
great-great-grandchildren. One brother preceded her in death.

Johnston, R. 2, died Tuesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He
was born April 28, 1975 in Kendallville. Surviving are the parents;

Johnston Catherine Alice was born Aug. 30, 1857 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio,
and died June 2, 1949. She is the last of four children
of the late Hope Mathew Rhoads. She married Andrew
Johnston Oct. 22, 1874. They had five girls and two boys. She was
joined the Baptist Church, then transferred to the Wesleyan Methodist Church in
Dec. 1922. Her husband preceded her in death in Dec. 1924. She leaves 7
children, Mrs. Olive Hile of South Bend, Mrs. Ella Campbell of Albion, Mrs.
Elsie Vanderford of Columbia City, Mrs. Fannie Moore of Roselle, Ill., Alfred of
Albion, William of Columbia City, and Gladys of Albion; 24 grandchildren; 65

Ave. from paralysis. She was born April 10, 1859 at Marshall, Mich., the
daughter of Reading and Amelia Gray, and came to Kendallville with her parents
in 1863. On March 22, 1882 she married O. F. Johnston. They had four sons, one having preceded the mother in death,. Surviving are the husband;
3 sons, E. M., St. Louis, Mo., Dr. R. G., Huntington, W. F., South Bend; 2
sisters and one brother, Mrs. L. P. Merkling, this city, Mrs. W. P. Myers and E.

Johnston Donald, oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. D. D. Johnston, died at the
home, 309 E. Williams St., Monday. Death was the result of

Johnston Elizabeth Tyler was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Aug. 9,
1810 and died in Albion May 22, 1901, aged 90 years 9 months and 13 days.
She was the oldest of a family of six children, 3 boys and 3 girls, all of whom
preceded her in death. She was married to John Johnston Dec. 21, 1839. She
was the mother of four children, James T. and William M. of Albion, Mary M.
Thompson of Fulton County, Ohio, and Isabella Harvey near Kendallville.
With her husband and children she emigrated to America in 1854 and resided in
Richland County, Ohio until one year after the death of her husband, which
occurred in 1881. Since that time she has lived in Albion, Ind. She was a member
of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland until she came to America. She became a
member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Albion, where the obsequies were
held May 24, 1901, after which the remains were taken to the B&O Depot for the
11:43 train to be conveyed to Savannah, Ohio to be buried by the side of

Johnston Ellen L, 91, of Albion, died April 6, 2011, at
Northridge Village Nursing Home in Albion. She
had worked at the Wirk Garment Co. and at Plax Engraving Co. in Ligonier.
She was a 1938 graduate of Albion High School.
She was a member of the North Star Rebekah Lodge, the Albion Home
Demonstration Club and the Asbury United Methodist Church in Albion.
She was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Jefferson Township to Herbert and
Gertrude (Fields) Jaquay. She married Perry ‘‘Bus’’ Johnston on Sept.
30, 1961. He died July 16, 1987.
She was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Dearl, Elvia, Eldridge and
Walter “Hap” Jaquay; and a sister, Lucille Hoffman.

Johnston Ethel D, 91, a native of Noble County and a sister of Mrs. Merle
(Alice) Adair, died Jan. 16, 1983 at Whitley County Hospital. She was the
daughter of Clark and Floretta Williamson Hill and while a young girl moved with
her parents to Whitley County. On Thanksgiving Day 1910 she married Homer P.
Johnston and they spent their entire married life on the Johnston farm in
Thorncreek Twp, Whitley County. He died in July 1959. Other survivors include
four sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two brothers

Johnston George, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Johnston, was born
Nov. 16, 1907 and died July 10, 1946, aged 38 years, seven months and 24
days. He graduated from the Wolf Lake High School in 1924 and in 1930 started
working as a railway mail clerk. Later he became a clerk in the Chicago terminal
post office. In Aug. 1934, he married Evelyn Longenecker. They had two daughters, Rita Kathryn and Karen Ann. He suffered a heart
attack Wednesday. Surviving are the wife, daughters and parents; four
sisters, Mrs. Faye Emery and Mrs. Esther Browning of South Bend, and Mrs.
Freeda Growcock and Mrs. Cora Gangwer of Kimmell; and three brothers, Clyde of

Johnston George Y, 86, Civil War veteran, died at the home here this
morning from senility. He was born Nov. 15, 1843, the son of
James and Rachel Johnston, there being 12 children in the family - 5 brothers
and 7 sisters. All of the brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Dec. 4, 1870 he
married Angeline Hill. They had 12 children, five of whom preceded him in death, also the
wife and mother, who died on Oct. 6, 1920. He was a lifelong resident of
the community and was a member of Co. C, 30th Indiana Volunteers
during the Civil War. All of his brothers enlisted in the army of the Union with
the exception of Andrew, he being the youngest and not old enough to enlist. He
was a member of the Calvary Evangelical Church south of Wolf Lake. Surviving are
five daughters, Mrs. J. A. Hosler of Kendallville, Mrs. Fred Howell of Columbia
City, Mrs. A. M. Parmenter of Bremen, Mrs. Levi Harroff and Mrs. Ocie

Johnston Grover, 71, a retired carpenter, died at his home in Kimmell Tuesday. He was a native of Noble County and had resided in

Johnston Harry of Poland, Ohio, died March 15, 1933. He was
born March 21, 1872, the eldest son of the late James T. and Elizabeth Prudence
Johnston, who lived in Albion for a number of years. He was united with the
Presbyterian Church of Albion when a young man. He married Jennie B. Boggs Oct. 12, 1909, and
they had three sons and
one daughter, Olen Jackson and Prudence Margaret having died in infancy. He
leaves his wife and two sons, James C., and Albert C.; and one sister,
Mrs. Winnifred Randall; three brothers, James B. and Donald D. of Fort Wayne,
and J. Harvey of Roundup, Montana. After his marriage he and his wife moved to
Youngstown, Ohio. He died at his home of bronchial and heart trouble.

retired employee of Kroger Co. Warehouse in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the

Johnston John William, 77, of R. 1, Wolcottville, died Thursday at his residence. He was born in Garrett April 16, 1910. He
was self-employed at Ben Franklin Store in New Haven and was a member of
Brighton Chapel, Elks, Moose, F&AM, Scottish Rite and Shrine of Fort Wayne.
His first wife, Mary Jane, died in 1979. On Oct. 9, 1981 in Brighton he married
Margaret Jauch, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Don (Mary
(Lucille) Applegate, Hartford, Conn., and Mrs. Wayne (Carol Ann) Colby, Fort
Wayne; a sister, Evelyn Beebe, Fort Wayne; a brother, Carl, W. Lafayette; and

Johnston Luther K, 79, of Churubusco, died Thursday at his residence of an apparent heart attack. Born Aug. 18, 1903
in Allen County, he was the son of Luther H. and Fannie Mae (Binkley) Johnston.
On Sept. 11, 1929 he married Opal G. Cripe. He grew up southeast of Churubusco
and for five years lived in Fort Wayne. He has resided in Churubusco since 1934.
He was retired from International Harvester where he had worked for 35 years and
was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife;
two daughters, Joanne Johnston of Churubusco, and Mrs. Gene (Karen) Dennison of
Mulberry, Fla.; two sons, Kenneth of Kendallville, and Jack of Great Falls,
Mont.; eight sisters, including Helen Henry of Angola; and three brothers, James
and Perry of Albion, and Robert of Hamilton; 7 grandchildren; and 6

Johnston Marvel, 85, Fort Wayne, died Tuesday
in the Fort Wayne Nursing Home. Born March 26, 1893 in Kendallville, she was the
daughter of A. A. and Nettie (Hart) France. She married Vaughn Johnston in 1918
in Kendallville. He died in 1924. She resided in Fort Wayne the past four years
after moving from Detroit where she worked as an officer in the foreign coin
department. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mildred Hawkins, Fort Wayne, and

Johnston Mary G, widow of the late William C. Johnston of this city, died
Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. R. Allyn, in Buffalo,
N.Y., with whom she had resided since a few years ago. She was recently operated
on for cancer of the stomach. Funeral was at the First Presbyterian Church in

Conn. Sept. 10, 1834 and died Sept. 13, 1904. She was a resident of Kendallville
28 years, coming to this community about the close of the Civil War. Her husband

Hospital. She was born March 14, 1939 in Wawaka, the daughter of Eugene and
Alberta (Ramer) Richards. She was a lifetime resident of Noble County and was
employed by Weatherhead Division of Dana Corp. in Kendallville, a member of
Ligonier Eastern Star, and Brimfield United Methodist Church. Surviving are her
parents at Wawaka; two brothers, Robert of Wawaka, and Ronald of Ingleside, Ill.

Johnston Samuel Marcellus was born Feb. 5, 1828 near Harrisburg, Penn. of
Scotch-Irish parentage. In his early childhood the family removed to Wayne
County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood near the hamlet of Moorland. During the
gold fever of 1850 he made the long overland trip to California, returning in
August of 1853. The following Oct. he married Mary Smith, with whom he lived for
52 years. In the spring of ’54 they moved to the then far west, Adams County,
Ind., remaining there 10 years. In ’69 they moved to Noble County near
Kendallville, which was their home for 12 years. Then followed a long residence
of 20 years near Richmond, Ind. He died Feb. 13 at the age of 78 years and 8

Alice (Meyers) Johnston. He married Cleo Pauline Blaugh on Aug. 22, 1936 in

former employee of Kraft Foods, she was a member of Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church and the Lady Elks Auxiliary of Kendallville. Surviving are

Home, Avilla. She was born Dec. 29, 1887 in Noble County to Mr. and Mrs. John
Schenher. She was married in 1908 to Michael Johoski, who died in 1963. She was
a former Garrett resident residing at 314 Hamsher St. since 1917. She was a
member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and Daughters of
Isabella. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. G. M. Cozier, Elk Rapids, Mich.; one

Jollief Maryjane, 77, died Friday at her home in
Kendallville. She was born Jan. 8, 1912 in Kendallville to Willis E. and
Margaret (Melvina) Sawyer. She married John Wendell Jollief March 21, 1941 in
Kendallville. She graduated from Muncie High School in 1930 and Ball State
Teachers College in 1933. She was a teacher and a past member of AAUW, a member
of the First Presbyterian Church and of the Calvin Circle of the Beta Associate
Chapter of Tri Kappa and was the original secretary of the Kendallville Housing
Authority. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Jill, Indianapolis, and Jan
Dunafin, LaGrange; one son, Jack, Kendallville; and four grandsons. One sister,
Josephine Sawyer Kimmel, preceded her in death. in 1974. Services Monday at

Healthcare Center. She was born in Noble County on Aug. 27, 1913 to Mervin
and Tillie (Blaisdell) Kresse. She was retired from Lyall Electric.
Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte Donat of Kendallville; 2 sons, Edmund Jones
of Wawaka and Henry (Barb) Jones of Silver Creek, N.Y.; a brother, Lawrence
"Skip" (Annie) Kresse of Mongo; 8 grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Clifford and

Jones Aquilla C died at his residence at the corner of 5th and
Cavin Streets in Ligonier on Aug. 2, 1890, aged 66 years, 5 months and 17 days.
He settled on a farm in LaGrange County several years ago in the early
settlement days, and for many years was a farmer,
during which time he amassed a competency which was at his disposal in later
days. About ten years ago he abandoned his rural life and became a resident of
Ligonier. It was then that he made the mistake of his life, for being a man used
to activity he could not be contented with a life of ease and leisure that his
new surroundings afforded. Funeral at his residence Aug. 4.

Jones Arthur, son of Earnest and Clara Jones, was born in Avilla August 3, 1903 and died Feb.
28, 1917 at the age of 13 years 6 months and 25 days from tuberculosis.
He is survived by his parents; his grandmother; 3 brothers, Clinton,

Jones Arthur E, of R. 1, Avilla, was the victim of an automobile accident
Friday near Avilla. Service was Tuesday in Calvary United Methodist Church with
the burial in King Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Noble County, he was born
Feb. 17, 1938, to Lester Jones of Goshen and Wava Robertson of Garrett. Aug. 18,
1963, he married Kay Ann Anderson in Hopewell Presbyterian Church,
Avilla, and was a truck driver for the Weiss Trucking Co. at Mongo. Survivors
include his wife and parents; two children, Teresa Kay 5, and Douglas Arthur 6;
three brothers, Donald and Richard Jones of Fort Wayne, and James Robertson of Avilla;

Jones Arthur E, 67, of Kendallville, died at
McCray Hospital Saturday. His death was attributed to a complication
following the amputation of his left leg last Feb. 10. Born in Seacomb, England,
April 17, 1879, he came to this country in 1900 and at first resided with a
brother north of Brimfield. In 1904 he moved to Kendallville and for 35 years
had been employed by the Flint & Walling Mfg. Co., retiring two years ago
because of poor health. He was associated with the Masons, Odd Fellows and
Maccabee Lodges. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Nola Hassinger Jones, whom he
married June 18, 1905; two sons, William of Tiffin, O., and Richard of Fort
Wayne; a brother, John of Rome City; and three grandchildren. + 3-?-1947
Jones Benjamin Franklin was born in Coshocton County, O., Sept. 30, 1835.
He came to Hendricks County, Indiana in 1853 and has been a resident of
Avilla for about 18 years. In 1862 he joined the army and served 2 years and 9 months in
Co. F. 51st Ind. Infantry. He
married Lucinda Sanders of Hendricks County in 1858. To this union were born 3 girls and 4 boys:
Mrs. Viola Tousley of Newaygo, Mich., Mrs. Laura Stotts and Ernest Jones
of Avilla, Newton and Ora Jones of Elkhart, Mrs. Cora Lung of Syracuse, and
Benjamin Franklin Jones Jr. of Kalamazoo, Mich.
He died January 27, 1917, having reached the age of 81 years 3 months and
28 days. He is survived by the
widow, 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren.

Jones Betty J, 80, of Garrett, died Feb. 16, 2006 at Miller's Merry Manor
in Garrett. She had worked at General Electric, McCray, Creek Chub Bait
Co. and Garrett High School. She was born April 2, 1916 in Ashley to
Claude and Letha Yergin Boszor. She married Donald N. Jones on March 13,
1948 in Kendallville. He died April 30, 1964. Surviving are 3
daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Linda and Don Johnson of Ottawa, Ill., Donna Knott
of Garrett and Mary and Mike Nodine of Garrett; grandchildren and spouses, Jenny
and Terry Ahearn, Todd Nodine, Adam and Miranda Knott, Jessica Johnson; 5
great-grandchildren, Bryce Nodine, Jacob and Matthew Ahearn and Kylie and Abram
Knott. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Boszor; a sister,

17, 2010 at her residence. She was born Nov. 29, 1937 in Yellow Mountain,
Ky. to Floyd and Lida (Conley) Wallen. She married Raymond Jones on April
3, 1969. He died May 3, 2004. Surviving are 4 sons, Gary Hicks of
Kendallville, Harold Hicks of Grassrange, Mont., Larry and Melissa Hicks of
Ligonier, and Jalinda Jones of Cromwell; 8 grandchildren, Aimee, Jessica, Jolen,
Dustin, Lacy, Kayla, Bethany and Brandon; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ann
(Ed) Perkins of Kendallville and Hadny Clevenger of Ligonier; and a brother,
Cordus Wallen of Rome City. She was also preceded in death by 2 infant
children; 3 sisters, Maxine Wallen, Beatrice Bailey and Jan Sawyer; and 2

Jones Brant B, 70, died in Indianapolis Oct. 24. He was born in Cromwell
in 1902 to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones. His first wife and a young son died at an
early age. Survivors include his wife, Lottie of Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs.
Eleanor Hanna, Sturgis, Mich.; 2 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a

Jones Byron H, 73, of 3305 Mishawaka Ave., died recently in the VA
Research Hospital, Chicago. He was born in Etna, Whitley County on Dec. 29, 1894
and on Dec. 20, 1919 in Goshen he married Fay Airgood. Survivors include his
wife; two brothers, Lewis of Pierceton, and Brant of Indianapolis; a sister,
Mrs. Nelle Harrell of South Bend. Services were Wednesday in Hollis Funeral
Home. Burial was in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. He was a veteran of WW I,
and a member of River Park American Legion Post 303 and of Carpenters Union

Jones Celia, 59, died last evening following a few days’
critical illness from pneumonia. She was born July 13, 1866 at Lyons, O., the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hall, and spent her early childhood days there.
When six years of age she came to Kendallville with her parents. September 22,
1886 she married J. A. Jones, who with one son, Ronald H.,
survives. One child preceded her in death. She was a member of Noble Chapter No.
122 OES, Ladies’ Auxiliary to American Legion Post 86 and the Rotary Anns.
Also surviving are the mother, now of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a brother, Brice of
Chicago; a sister, Mrs. G. W. Tullis of Cleveland, O.; and one grandchild. She

was born Jan. 26, 1929 in Knott County, Ky. to Jacob and Mary Ellen (Combs)
Jones. On Sept. 29, 1953 in Prestonsburg, Ky., he married Norma Jane
Ousley. He worked at Lane Foundry and Newnam Foundry and retired March 1,
1993 from Colwell General. He was a member of Salem United Baptist
Church. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and
L. D. Mosley of Hindman, Ky., Wanda and Raymond Sparkman of Rome City and
Jeannie Haire and Shirley Douglas of Fort Wayne; 3 sisters, Angeline Bentley of
Hindman, Maulta Ritchie of LaGrange and Elizabeth Owens of Georgetown, Ky.; 2

Jones Clara Myrtle, 97, of Wawaka, died today in Miller’s
Merry Manor, LaGrange. Born Oct. 14, 1885 in Springfield, Ill., she was the
daughter of David and Sarah (Hampton) Dixon. In Wawaka in 1904 she married
Lester Jones, who preceded her in death. She had lived in Topeka before moving
to Wawaka 64 years ago. She was a member of the Wawaka United Methodist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Russell (Flossie) Stauffer of Goshen, Dorothy
Teal of Hendersonville, Tenn., Ellen Franks of Wawaka, and Mrs. Merrill (Sarah)
Grooms of Ligonier; a son, Carlton of Irons, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; and 36

Hospital, Sturgis, Mich. He was born Oct. 9, 1900 in Anderson to William Harry
and Effie (Stephens) Jones. He married Dorothy Dolly Elizabeth Carter June 29,
1921 in Anderson. He was a 23-year Wawaka resident who moved there from
Anderson. He was employed at Kaufman Hardware, Anderson, for 36 years and later
owned and operated Jones Trading Mart in Rome City. He retired two years ago. He
was a member of Rome City United Methodist Church and F&AM Lodge 451,
Chapter 595 OES and a charter member of Rome City Lions Club. Survivors include

Jones Eugene T, 45, of St. Louis, Mich., died Sept. 25 from a massive
heart attack. He was born in Kendallville to Merrill and Rosa (Heileman) Jones
and on Aug. 5, 1961 married Gertrude Christensen. He was employed by Cen-Tel of
Allenwood, Ill. Surviving are his wife; his mother, Rosa Russell of
Kendallville; a son, James Shepherd; a brother, Paul of St. Louise; his
stepmother, Gladys Jones; three half-brothers and six half-sisters, all of

Jones Evan died May 3. The body was taken to Ohio for interment on May 5
via the Lake Shore Road. He was one of the pioneers of the Avilla vicinity and
had accumulated property estimated at 40 or 60 thousand dollars. He had no

Monday of a heart attack. She was born Nov. 18, 1873 near Swan, the daughter of

sons, Curtis Miller, South Bend, and Bert Miller of Mishawaka; one daughter,

Jones Forest, 65, of Waukegan, Ill, a native of Garrett, died
Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Bruce, R. 2, Avilla, where he was
visiting. Mrs. Bruce and Mr. Jones were cousins. He was born May 3, 1902, the
son of Ira and Kathryn Jones, who operated a grocery store in Garrett for many
years. He was a graduate of Garrett High School and had resided the past 40
years at Waukegan, where he was a retired vice president and treasurer of the
Blatchford Calf Meal Company. He never married. Surviving are a number of

in food service at West Noble Schools for 19 years and was a member of Ligonier
Church of Christ. Surviving are her husband; a son, Robert of Nappanee; a
daughter, Teresa Garza of Ligonier; a sister, Phyllis Willsey of Crestview,
Fla.; and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Glen; a

Susanna Beachy who died in 1987. A retired mill worker, he was a member of Maple

Jones Gerald E "Pud", 70, died unexpectedly September 11, 2005
at the family residence north of Fort Wayne as the result of an apparent heart
attack. He was born September 18, 1934 in Eel River Twp, Allen County, a
son of Clarence A. "Babe" and Blondena M. "Jane" (Geiger)
Jones. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1952 and served with the
U.S. Navy. On October 8, 1960 he was married in Whitley County to Barbara
L. Miller and lived in the Churubusco area until moving to Fort Wayne in
June. A repairman for International Harvester in Fort Wayne, he worked 34
years, retiring in 1986. He was member of the Churubusco United Methodist
Church; a 12-year school board member of Smith-Green Community Schools; a member
of Ideal Fish & Game Club in Churubusco. He coached Little League and
volunteered at Community Harvest Food Bank at Fort Wayne. Surviving are
his wife; 3 children, Kurt and Jill Jones of Fort Wayne, Kregg and Lanette Jones

Manor Health Care Center. She was born in Pikeville, KY on Jan. 14, 1946
to Willie and Palestine (Turner) Hall. She married Mark Jones. He
died in Rome City on Sept. 27, 1973. She was a member of Faith Freewill
Baptist Church and worked at McDonald's in Kendallville. Surviving are a
son and daughter-in-law, Mark Jr. and Joni Jones of Avilla; 2 daughters,
Christine Merriman of Kendallville and Crystal Jones of Fort Wayne; 4
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by 3

Jones Glen Leon, 2 ½, R. 1, Ligonier, died of massive brain injuries
when he ran into the path of a car on CR 750N, 1.8 miles west of Ligonier. He
was born Dec. 1, 1969 in Goshen Hospital to Raymond and Frances (Mabie) Jones.
He was a member of Northside Church of Christ. Surviving are the parents; a
sister, Teresa, and a brother, Robert, both at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

Jones Grace Mae, about 70, a resident of the Kimmell community most of
her life, died Saturday at Irene Byron Hospital. She was
born Nov. 27, 1889 in Noble County and was a member of the Broadway Christian
Church. Surviving are the husband, Ray, to whom she was married June 10, 1916; a
daughter, Mrs. Everett Baker of Kimmell; a brother, Chauncey Kunce of South
Bend; a sister, Miss Fay McLean of Findlay, Ohio; and two granddaughters.

Jones Hannah, late the wife of Samuel Jones, followed in quick succession the death of her
husband. She was born in Madison
County, Ohio April 6, 1834 and died at her home in Wolf Lake April 16, 1891,
aged 47 years and 10 days. She
emigrated to Noble County with her parents, Silas and Olive Whitaker, one sister
and one brother, in 1838. Her
father died in 1843 and her mother, a few years later, leaving their 3 young
children to the cold charities of the world.
The elder sister died many years ago and her brother lived.
She was married to Samuel Jones Dec. 7, 1851.
They had 5 children.
The daughters all died when young; the son, E. S., survives.
She was baptized at Cold Springs, then in Noble County, in 1849 and

Jones John was born in Peoria, Ill. Jan. 3, 1844, where he remained until
Aug. 15, 1862 when he enlisted in the 108th Illinois Regiment Vol.
Infantry and served in the Army of the Mississippi; was in the Battle of
Arkansas Post and siege of Vicksburg and was detailed on the detached force on
the mortar boats on the Mississippi River and was discharged on account of
disability June 5, 1865 at Columbus, Ohio, and came to Noble County, Ind. for a
short visit and then returned to Peoria, Ill., where he remained until 1873 when
he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, then went to the north part of the
state and remained about 2 years, then came to Noble County and was
married to Melissa M. Myers Dec. 10, 1876. They had 3
sons, 2 dying in infancy. They lived for a number of years near Diamond Lake,
then moved to a farm near Syracuse in Kosciusko County, where he joined the

trouble and complications. He was born in England March 5, 1874 and came to
America in his youth. He came there from Fort Wayne as a retired attorney where
he had practiced for 35 years. He was first married to Mae Clock of Rome City,
who died many years ago. He was a member of the Summit City Masonic Lodge, the
Scottish Rite and Shrine of Fort Wayne. He was a brother of the late A. E. Jones

Jones Josephine C, 87, died at the Sacred Heart Home Saturday. She was
born in Avilla March 12, 1899, the daughter of Joseph and Teresa Mary (Lash)
Carteaux. She married Ronald H. Jones Feb. 11, 1936 in Auburn. He died in 1966.
A lifetime area resident, she was an officer of J. A. Jones Insurance Co. for
many years, a member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Rosary Sodality,
Lady Elks, American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, Thomas C., Cut Bank,
Mont.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Jane
Reichart, an infant daughter, one sister and three brothers preceded her in

barber, was born in Cromwell about 1900, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones. He

Jones Lester R, 93, died Monday in Crystal Valley Care Center in
Goshen. He was born June 4, 1900 in LaGrange County to Ernest A. and Clara
A. (Hart) Jones. In 1940 he married Bertha Cook, who preceded him in
death. He worked on the railroad section gang for 24 years, retiring in
1963. He also worked for Hettrick Mfg. Surviving are a daughter,

Jones Lois M, 75, of Xenia Ohio, died Monday at Xenia Nursing Home. Born in Kendallville June 23, 1909, she was the
daughter of Leo and Inez E. (Marsh) Gaskill. She married Ray Scott in Dayton,
Ohio, and he preceded her in death. On Sept. 27, 1959 she married C. Arthur
Jones. She had been employed as a milliner and was a clerical worker, a member
of Friends Church in Xenia, and OES in Kendallville. Surviving are her husband;
a son Wilfred Jones of Xenia; a sister, Alene Beebe of Setauket, N.Y.; a
brother, Joseph K. Gaskill of Bloomington; a grandchild and six nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Winfred E.

Jones Lucinda died as a result of a several months’ illness from
complications and heart trouble at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Stotts
on S. Main St. Monday. Her husband, who died some years ago,
was a Civil War veteran. She was a member of the local Evangelical Church.
Surviving are three sons, Ora of Elkhart, Benjamin of Kalamazoo, Mich., and
Ernest of Stroh; and two daughters, Mrs. John Stotts and Mrs. Theodore Johnson,

five years and left here last June for Spiceland. He was born Nov. 18, 1906 in

LaVerne H. of Spiceland; a daughter, Mrs. Arville L. (Mavis) Renner of Atlanta,
Ga.; one son, Randy at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emrys Jones, Lake Norden,

Jones Mary Sophia, daughter of Mary and Benjamin Dennison, was born at
Bradford, England Sept. 25, 1832, and died at the home of her son, John G. B.
Jones, in Orange Twp Nov. 11, aged 70 years 1 month and 10 days. She was married
to John Milner Jones at Calvary Church, Pudsey, England. He died in 1888. She
came to this country in company with her two sons, John and Arthur, in March
1901. She was the mother of 9 children, 3 of whom survive her, namely, Richard
Burton, John G. Burton and Arthur Edward. She was a member of the Church of

Jones Patrick, a 24-year old Garrett man, was shot to death Saturday by Garrett police officer Rex Willoughby while responding to a domestic
disturbance. Jones was reportedly attempting to enter the home of his estranged
wife’s mother with a knife. It was reported that he had been drinking and
approached the officer with a large knife. He was born Dec. 11, 1960 in
LaGrange, the son of Robert and Mary Jane (Thrapp) Jones. He married Charlotte
Bowman May 26, 1983 in Auburn. Survivors include his parents and estranged wife;
a daughter, Tia M., at home; four brothers, Greg, Hamilton, Gary, Kendallville,
Jeff, Garrett, Mike, Texas; two sisters, Rita Ternet, Avilla, and Kathy Parker,

Jones Pomeroy E, 47 years, 4 months and 3 days, died near Kendallville,
April 12 of typhoid pneumonia. He was born in Greenfield, Mercer County, Penn.
When a young man he moved to Indiana where on the 16th of May 1855 he
married Luthenia M. Gallup near Kendallville. In the fall of 1852 he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church
at Green’s Corners, DeKalb County. He leaves a wife, one daughter and 2 sons,

the son of David and Harriet (Bothwell) Jones. He married Grace Koontz, who died

Fort Wayne. He was born October 5, 1934 in Filbert, W.Va. to Jess and
Carrie (Lewis) Jones. On April 25, 1969 in Brimfield he married Yvonne
Wallen. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Jalinda of Cromwell; 3
stepsons; a sister, Stella Quesenberry of Caretta, W.Va.; 8 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter,
Enola G.; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Ruby Huff. He moved to the
Kimmell area 30 years ago from Wawaka. He retired in 1997 from Curto

Jones Ronald H, 71, 715 E. Diamond St., a lifetime resident of
Kendallville, died in his home Wednesday. Born in Kendallville on
July 5, 1894, he was the son of John Austin and Celia Hall Jones. His first
wife, Ursula Devault, died in 1933. He married Josephine C. Carteaux on Feb. 11,
1936 in Auburn. President of Jones Insurance & Bond, Inc., he was president
of First Federal Savings & Loan, Inc., 1961-1965. An elder of First
Presbyterian Church, a member of F&AM Lodge 276, a veteran of WW I, a member
of the American Legion, VFW, IOOF, Elks and charter member of Rotary, he
graduated from Kendallville High School in 1913, and was commissioned as a first
lieutenant on July 3, 1918 and served overseas until discharged on March 8,
1919. He then returned to Kendallville and became a partner with his father.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Roy J. (Mary Jane) Reichart, and a son,
Thomas C., both Kendallville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. An
infant daughter and an infant sister preceded him in death. Services

Jones Samuel, one of the earliest settlers of Noble Twp, died at his home in Wolf Lake April
11, 1891, aged 63 years and 5 months. He
was born in Clark County, Ohio Nov. 11, 1827 and came to Noble County with his
parents in 1833. His father, Samuel
Jones Sr., entered and settled on the land which to this day is known as the
Jones farm, 1 1/2 miles west of Wolf Lake. Samuel
Jr. was the youngest of his father’s family and brother of the late Dr. Elias
Jones and of Mary, widow of Andrew Humphreys, all of whom are now deceased.
Samuel Jr. was the last member of the Jones family who emigrated to Noble
County in 1833. In Dec. 1848 he
married Nancy Powers, who died in 1850, leaving one child who died soon after.
On Dec. 7, 1851 he was married to Hannah Whitaker.
They had 5 children, 4 of whom have been dead for many
years. His widow and one son, E. S.
of Grand Traverse City, Mich., survive him.
Funeral will be held.

disease was that which is known as la grippe, whose many victims at this hour
are prostrate upon beds of affliction and nigh unto death.

Jones Ursula, 35, wife of Ronald H. Jones, died at Lakeside
Hospital from gall stones and pancreatitis. She was born Dec. 14, 1897 at

in 1909. She attended the local high school but was compelled to discontinue her
studies because of ill health. A few years later her health had been fully

Jones Viola, 86, widow of the late Thomas Jones and former resident of
Cromwell, died in South Bend on Feb. 10. Funeral was at Hollis Chapel in

Imogene Ray of Terre Haute; a brother, James Ray of Hollywood, Fla.; two

married Elza Jordan in Garrett July 4, 1915. Survivors include her husband; six

in an auto accident. He had been co-owner of the Corunna Hardware and
Jordan Construction since 1962 and had worked at the waste water treatment plant
in Garrett for 11 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Cedar Lake
Church of the Brethren. He was born June 8, 1931 in DeKalb County to Elza
and Carrie (Haynes) Jordan. He married Roberta Dawson on June 17, 1950 in

Wolcottville and former superintendent of Wolcottville Street & Water Dept.,
a WW II veteran, member of St. Gaspar’s Catholic Church, Wolcottville American
Legion and VFW, LaGrange. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Tom
(Sally) Watson of Wolcottville, and Shirley Criswell of Rome City; five sons,

Jordan Grace M, 87, died Tuesday in McCray Hospital. She had
lived most of her life at R. 2, Avilla, currently residing near Spencerville.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. She was born
Sept. 30, 1893 in LaOtto, the daughter of George and Matilda (Sands) Bilger. She
married Leslie A. Jordan Feb. 14, 1920 in Albion. He died July 14, 1961.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth of LaOtto, and Arthur of Fort Wayne; four

was a clerical worker, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Cedar

and Alvertia M. (Yeoman) Redman. On August 21, 1964 she married Franklin

Jordan Kenneth R, 72, died today in his Swan residence from cancer.
He was born in Swan Twp, Noble County, on Jan. 25, 1921 to Leslie and Grace
Jordan. On Oct. 23, 1942 in Swan United Methodist Church he married Leila
M. Kugler. A lifetime Swan area resident, he was a retired construction
superintendent with W. A. Sheets & Son of Fort Wayne. He was a member
of American Legion Post 240, Avilla, and Northeast Indiana District Council of
United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America No. 232. Surviving
are his wife; a daughter, Kathy Strawser of Kendallville; a son, Dennis of

Jordan Leslie A, 69, a retired carpenter, died at his home west of Swan
on July 14. He was born in DeKalb County on June 14, 1892 and had resided in the
Swan area all of his life. He was the son of William and Millia Jordan, the
eldest of three children. On February 14, 1920, at Albion, Indiana, he married Grace M. Bilger. He was a member of Swan Methodist
Church, Avilla American Legion Post 140 and was employed by W. A. Sheets and
Sons of Fort Wayne at the time of retirement. Survivors include his wife; two

Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center. She was born March 27, 1930 in

She was a native and lifelong resident of Noble County, born Nov. 8, 1871, the
daughter of John and Hannah (Ambrose) Grocock, both natives of England.
Her husband died about a year ago. Surviving are 2 sons, Elza, Corunna, and
Leslie of Swan Twp; a daughter, Mrs. Velma Kennedy, Swan Twp; 2 brothers, Joseph

Jordan Ramonna A, 57, of Kendallville died Dec. 30, 2009, at her
home. She was a teacher for 26 years in the East Noble School Corp. She
taught for 22 years at Rome City Elementary School and for four years at Avilla
Elementary School. She then worked as a receptionist at RediMed in Auburn for
eight years. She was a member of the Kendallville Kiwanis Club and the
Cedar Lake Church of the Brethren.
She was born Feb 5, 1952, in Garrett to Jay A. and Margaret R. (Sliger) Penland.
She married Rodney A. Jordan August 16, 1974, at the Cedar Lake Church of the

Jordan Robert L, of Garrett, died Aug. 13, 2011, at Betz
Nursing home in Auburn. He was born
Nov. 10, 1927, in DeKalb County to Elza C. and Carrie B. (Haynes) Jordan.
He was a truck driver for 7 years, worked in a boat factory for 8 years
and was a meat cutter for 25 years at Sutton’s Grocery in Waterloo and other
independent local grocery stores in the area before retiring in 1989. After
retiring he worked as an image coordinator at the Auburn Shell Station.
He was a former member of the Auburn Kiwanis Club and the St. Joe Lions
Club. He was a member of the Cedar Lake Church of the Brethren. Robert
married DeMaris A. Foster on Feb. 10, 1991, in DeKalb County. Surviving are his
wife; 2 sons and a daughter, Robert L. Jordan Jr. of Avilla, Daniel W. (Pam)
Jordan of Garrett and Mary Frances Menjivar of Butler.; 4 stepchildren; numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Junior Jordan of
Helmer, Franklin Jordan of Auburn and Dallas Jordan of Auburn.

She graduated from East Noble High School in 1985. She worked as the bar

She was a member of the VFW Post 2749 Auxiliary and Kendallville Moose
Lodge 1301. She was born Sept. 26,
1966, in Kendallville to Russell L. and Sandra K. (Mortimore) Muscello. On Dec.
31, 1991, in Kendallville she married Charles Jordan, Jr.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Shay and Russell
Owsley of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Caden, Noah, Rebekah and Isabel Owsley;

Germany, emigrated from there in 1837. He came to this vicinity 33 years ago,
purchased his homestead in 1850 and was living there up to the time of his
death. He was an active member of the M. E. Church

Swan Twp of paralysis. Born in England, he came to this community when a young

Jorg Roy J, 81, Ligonier, died in Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.
on Nov. 13 of complications. He was born Aug. 4, 1895 in Livingston
County, Ill. to John D. and Sarah (Claudon) Jorg. He married Ruth G. Rupp on
Dec. 12, 1917. She died May 6, 1946. He married Grace C. Blue on July 10, 1950.
She died in Nov. 1975. Raised in Ill., he moved to Ohio in 1925 and farmed. In
1927 he moved to Ligonier where he owned and operated the Ligonier Hatchery
until 1955 when he entered the real estate business. He was a former mayor of
Ligonier and a director of the American State Bank, member of Ligonier Elks,
Eagles and Masonic Lodges, Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine, a founder of the
Ligonier Industrial Development Board, also Chamber of Commerce and Rotary
Clubs, Ligonier. He was Noble County Republican Chairman and 4th District chairman. Surviving are a son, John J. of Tucson; four grandchildren,

1881. The settled on a farm and followed agricultural pursuits until the spring
of 1888 when they came to Springfield where they purchased property and have

area resident, he was a self-employed mechanical contractor. A veteran of WW II,
he was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Businessmen’s Association and

Judd Ralph E, 58, R. 2, Albion, died Nov. 4 at Whitley
County Hospital from congestive heart failure. He was born Jan. 14, 1920, a son
of Clarence and Effie Belle Appleton Judd. His formative years were spent in
Thorncreek Twp. After completing his education he engaged in farming until he
was drafted into military services in WW II. At the close of the war he returned
to Whitley County and on Feb. 14, 1947 was united in marriage to Agnes E.
Skidgel. They established their home on a farm in Thorncreek Twp and in 1946
they moved to their present home near Merriam. In Dec. 1952 he began his
employment with the Fruehauf Corporation in Fort Wayne. He was a member of
Columbia City Post 98 American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Agnes; a son,
Alfred E., Warsaw; a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Phyllis) Ott, R. 4, Albion; two

Lutheran Home. He was born Feb. 19, 1901 in Avilla, the son of Ernst and Anna (Sparfeld)

was a farmer and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Avilla. Surviving are two

Juengel Waldemar, 82, Akron, Ohio, died Jan. 6. He was
born Sept. 5, 1904, the son of Ernst G. and Anna Katherine (Sparfeld) Juengel,

1-13-1982) in McCray Hospital. He was born in Allen County May 28, 1898, the
son of Frank and Eulalia (Bobay) Juif. He married Jessie Speaker Nov. 29,
1923 in Albion. She preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer. Surviving
are a daughter, Mrs. Junior (Virginia) DeCamp of R. 1, Albion; two sons, William

Juif Bernard J, 87, R. 1, Albion, died Nov. 9, 1988, in Betz Nursing
Home, Auburn. He was born in Allen County to Frank and Eulalia Bobay Juif. His
first wife, Edna, preceded him in death in 1949, and his second wife, Jean, whom
he married in 1953, died in 1970. He was a farmer and retired director of
Community State Bank, Avilla. For many years he was a breeder of purebred
Hampshire hogs. Only nieces and nephews survive. Four brothers and one sister

Juif Cora M, about 72, of Albion, died Oct. 4, 1966 at her home. She was a native of this
community, having been born south of Albion, and was a lifelong resident of this
area. She had lived for a time in Fort Wayne with her husband, who was a postal
employee, but when he retired six years ago they returned to Albion. She married
Henry Juif in 1921. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. William H. Speaker. She is
survived by her husband and four sisters, Mrs. Jessie Juif and Mrs. Emma Powell
of Albion, Mrs. Etta Amick of Kimmell, and Mrs. Anna Seymoure of Avilla. Two
brothers and one sister preceded her in death. She was a member of the Blessed

Juif Henry C, 77, died Wednesday at McCray Hospital. He was
born in August 1894 in Allen County to Frank and Eulalia (Bobay) Juif.
His wife, Cora M., whom he married Aug. 11, 1921, died Oct. 4, 1966. A retired
postal employee, he moved to Albion from Fort Wayne in 1960. He was a member of
the American Legion and a veteran of WW I. Surviving are two brothers, Alexis P.

Juif Jean - A two-car accident south of Kendallville Sunday claimed the life of Mrs. Jean Juif, 55, R. 1, Albion, and
injured three others. She was born May 31, 1914, the daughter of Frank Fansler
and Maude Smith. She was married in 1954 to Bernard Juif, who survives. He is on
the board of directors at the Avilla Community State Bank. They moved to Albion
in 1954 and have been residents of that area since then. She was a member of the
Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren in Garrett. Surviving in addition to her
husband are one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Bonnie) Boyer of South Carolina and several
nieces and nephews. Funeral Wednesday at the Berhalter-Preston

Juif Jessie V, 78, was born March 27, 1898 in Noble County to
William Speaker and Margaret Sieber. She married Alexis Juif in Albion
Nov. 29, 1923, and he survives. She was a lifelong resident of the Albion area.
Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Virginia (Junior) DeCamp, Albion; two
sons, William, Wolcottville, and Phillip, Millersburg; and one sister, Mrs. Emma

Juillerat Harry, 78, died Saturday in McCray Hospital. Born in Whitley
County July 15, 1902, he was the son of Edmund and Etta (Keel) Juillerat. He
married Martha Wilson, who preceded him in death in 1961. A resident of Avilla
area since 1959, he was a retired farmer and a member of Immanuel Lutheran
Church. Surviving are three sisters, Bertha Thorn and Berniece Alexander, both
Columbia City, and Mary Giant, Fort Wayne; six brothers, Donald Gilbert, and

the Garrett Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Juillerat moved to this community from

Julow Arthur, 60, R. 1, died Monday in McCray Hospital. He
was born July 10, 1900 and moved to this community four and one-half years ago

brother, Walter of Galveston, Ind.; and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Parker of Wolf

Julow Hazel, 102, of Garrett, died Dec. 16, 2004 at Miller's Merry Manor
in Garrett. She was born May 18, 1902 in Garrett to Elmer and Effie
Griffin. She farmed with her husband, Arthur, who died in 1960.
Surviving are 2 grandsons, Howard Julow of Waterloo and Dallas Julow of Auburn;
and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Everett; 3

Julow John, about 66 years old, resident of Whitley County for the past
eight years, died Thursday in the Lutheran Hospital at Fort
Wayne from complications resulting from kidney and bladder trouble. He resided a
half mile south and a half mile west of Collins in Smith Twp. Surviving are the
widow, Dora; two sons, Walter of Greentown, Ind., and Arthur of Smith Twp; and a
daughter, Dorothy, a nurse in the Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake; several
grandchildren, brothers and sisters. He formerly lived near Cromwell. +

born July 31, 1966 to James Willard and Shirley A. (Birge) Justice in Fort Wayne
and was a resident of Johnson Road in Fort Wayne. He was the owner of Justice
Automotive in Huntertown for the past ten years and a member of the Huntertown
United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Jeffrey J., and a daughter,
Jenna Ann, at home; his father and stepmother, James W. and Kathy A. Justice of
Fort Wayne; a brother, John W. of Fort Wayne; and 3 sisters, Lori A. Blain and

carpenter, died Friday of cancer in VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was
born Sept. 15, 1898 in Freeport, Ind. to Charles and Ida Justus and married
Thelma Snider July 2, 1921. She died Dec. 10, 1973. He was a member of the
Cromwell Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, Carpenter’s Local 232, Fort
Wayne, and a veteran of WW I. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Joan)
King, Boca Raton, Fla., Mrs. Charles (Judy) Weaver, and Mrs. Cheryl Frost, both

Justus Nancy L, 75, of Ligonier, died Nov. 20, 2005 at Lutheran Hospital
in Fort Wayne. She had been employed at Monsanto, Holiday Homes, and at
Royal Imprints as a service representative. She was a member of West Noble
American Legion Auxiliary, TOPS Club, Democrat Women and Ligonier United
Methodist Church. She was born July 10, 1930 in Toledo, Ohio to Rudolph
and Beulah (Borgelt) Helm. On Aug. 12, 1950 she married William Bailey in
Toledo. He died July 7, 1969. On June 11, 1973 in Illinois she
married Robert Justus. He died March 18, 1984. Surviving are a
daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Steve Hagen of Ligonier; 2 stepchildren; 2
sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Roy Ellsworth of Toledo and Sharon and
Dave Turner of Findlay, Ohio; 4 grandchildren, Jessica (Robert) Martin, Jeremy
Cripe, Tyler and Ross Hagen. She was also preceded in death by a son, Tom

residence. Born Dec. 5, 1921 in Shelby County, he was the son of Milton and
Thelma Snider Justus. On June 8, 1973 in Flora, Ill. he married Nancy
Helm Bailey. A Cromwell area resident since 1933, he was a veterans’ service
officer for this area; an Army veteran of WW II, member of American Legion
Sparta Post 421, IBC of America Local 232 and DeKalb Voyeuger 40&8.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Crystal Suzanne of Kensington, Md.; a son,
Robert H. Jr of Arlington, Va.; a stepdaughter, Debra Bailey of Warsaw; two
sisters, Mrs. Richard (Lea Joanne) King of Boca Raton, Fla., and Mrs. Charles
(Judy) Weaver of Mesa, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. A stepson, Thomas Bailey,
