Howlett Leatha L, 14, committed suicide Thursday at the home of her parents in Auburn by drinking carbolic acid. Death resulted in half an hour after the drug had been taken despite efforts of doctors to save her. No immediate cause for the girl’s act has been discovered, although she had a controversy during the day with her mother relative to a trip to Angola. For sometime the girl was employed at a hotel in Angola but gave up her position Monday and returned home. She left a valuable bracelet at the hotel and Thursday her mother insisted that she return and get it. This the girl refused to do and she spent the day helping her mother do a washing. Shortly after 4 o’clock she left the house and visited a drug store, where she purchased the acid. Returning home, she went to the pump, calmly swallowed the poison and walking into the house, informed her mother of the act. "Mother, I have taken poison and am going to die," she said. "Forgive me and I will forgive you for everything." She was one of the young women who figured in a scandal early in the spring that resulted in the grand jury returning indictments against a number of Auburn young men for contributing to the delinquency of several girls. For a time she was held in jail as a witness but was later released in the care of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bryon Howlett, although a ward of the board of children’s guardians. The parents, two brothers and one sister survive. ~ 8-28-1912
