Hoagland Amanda, 88, died at her home in Ligonier last week. Surviving are one brother, Charles W. Welch, Finley, O.; two nieces, Mrs. Charles E. Hoak, Faye E.of Elkhart, died Tuesday, Jan 12 at 8 am at Valley View Nursing Center where she had been a patient since March 1986. She was born in Noble County and married Russell L. Hoak, who survives. She was a member of the Married Women’s Club, the Order of the Eastern Star Starlight Chapter, Lady Elks and Sparta United Church of Christ. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan 14 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral Home by Rev. Orus Rupe and the Rev. J. Hoak Russell L, 89, Elkhart, died Sunday at Valley View Nursing Center in Elkhart. He was born Nov. 27, 1898 in Ligonier. He married Faye E. Earnhart, who died Jan. 12, 1988. He retired in 1964 as senior vice president of First National Bank, Elkhart, where he had worked for 38 years. He was a member of the Tyrain Masonic Lodge, Elkhart, Scottish Rite, South Bend, Orak Shrine, 33rd degree, the Kiwanis Club and Elks. There are no known survivors. Hobbs Ada M, 91, of rural Ligonier, died Aug. 7, 2008 at Brookside Nursing Home in Kenosha, Wis. She was a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church. She was born May 30, 1917 in Yale, Ky. to Sherman and Lara Reed Kring. She married Raymond Hobbs on Dec. 9, 1936 in Ligonier. He preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Retia and Art Strong of Kenosha, Wis.; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry. Services at Sparta Cemetery. ^ 8-8-2008
Hobbs Arnold G, 66, died Sunday in Porter Hospital in Valparaiso. He was born in Kimmell June 1, 1926 to Clifford and Mae (Pierce) Hobbs. On May 25, 1955 in Angola he married Dora Campbell. He was plant manager at Joy Mfg. Co. in Elk Grove, Ill., and was a member of Moose Lodge 981, Michigan City, F.O.P. and St. Joseph Young Men's Society. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Babette Littlefield of Valparaiso; a son, Barth of Michigan City; a sister, Inez Beach of Montpelier, Ohio; a brother, Raymond of Cromwell; and one grandchild. Hobbs Frances, 81, was born Feb. 4, 1891 in Avilla to Phillip and Mary (Heckman) Fortman. She married Roscoe (Bob) Hobbs Aug. 15, 1914 in Fort Wayne. He survives. She resided at 113 Lakeside Dr., Auburndale, Fla., and died Sunday in Winter Haven, Fla. Other survivors are nieces and nephews, including Carl Fortman of New Haven. Hobbs Larry D, 53, died Tuesday in Hospice Home of Houston, Texas. He was born in Ligonier April 14, 1942 to Raymond and Ada (Kring) Hobbs. On Nov. 2, 1974 in Houston he married Patricia Nail. A 1960 graduate of Cromwell High School, he attended Purdue and Indiana universities and received his degree from the University of Houston. He was chief toxicologist for the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office in Houston and a member of the Baptist Church in Houston. Surviving are his parents in Ligonier; his wife; a son, Lance of Houston; 3 daughters, Renee McGough of Kilgore, Texas, Leah Martin of Midland, Texas and Carisa Hobbs of Sugarland, Texas; a sister, Retia Strong of Naperville, Ill.; and 4 grandchildren. Hobbs Mae M, 87, of R. 2, Ligonier, died Thursday at her residence. The daughter of William W. and Laura (Wills) Pierce, she was born Aug. 19, 1895 in Bath County, Ky. On Jan. 21, 1912 in Owensville, she married Clifford C. Hobbs, who died in 1956. She had lived in the area since 1941, moving from Kentucky. She attended Kimmell United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Inez Beach of Montpelier, Ohio; two sons, Raymond of Ligonier, and Arnold of Michigan City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Hobbs Raymond, 88, of rural Ligonier, died Aug. 18, 2004 at Parkview Noble Hospital. He was a farmer and carpenter and a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church. He was born Oct. 2, 1915 in Noble County to Clifford C. and Mae M. (Pierce) Hobbs. He married Ada Kring on Dec. 9, 1936 in Ligonier. Surviving are his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Art Strong of Kenosha, Wis.; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Hobbs Ryan Franklin, 2-day old son of Duane and Ronda Hobbs of Taylorsville, Ill., died Thursday in Parkview Hospital. Hobson Almeda A "Dolly", 92, died Thursday at her residence at 236 Baum St. Born Nov. 8, 1894 in Fort Wayne, she was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Her husband, Russell, died in 1960. Surviving are three daughters, Doris, Rome City, Margie Ponessa of Calif., and Martha Cox of Avilla; a son, Paul Bennett of Fort Wayne; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Hobson Raymond L, 59, Fort Wayne, son of Mrs. Russell M (Dolly) Hobson of Avilla, died Saturday in Parkview Hospital. Manager of the Motor Truck Service Parts operations at International Harvester Co. in Fort Wayne, he had been associated with the firm since 1934 when he was first employed as a machine operator. He coordinated the design, layout and construction of Harvester’s motor truck service parts building in 1951. He was a charter member of Forest Park United Methodist church and was elected lay leader for 1972. He currently was serving as comptroller for the church. He was a native of Kokomo. Also surviving are his wife, Frances; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Wardell of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; a son, Kenneth R. Hobson of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Thurman N. and Richard K., both of Fort Wayne. Funeral Tuesday in D. O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home. Hobson Richard G, 59, Avilla, died April 2, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident north of Avilla. He was born August 13, 1944 in Greenville, S.C. to Richard K. and Doris (Bennett) Hobson. He married Sarah Porter on September 19, 1987. Surviving are 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Kimberly and Brian Gaze of Fort Wayne, Mariah and Brian Walker of Rome City, and Christina Bassett of Fort Wayne; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard R. and Jennifer Hobson of Avilla; and 12 grandchildren. He lived in Avilla for the last 25 years. He retired from Navistar after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Mid-America Windmill Museum and the Noble County Gas & Steam Association. Hobson Russell, 70, a retired plant engineer for the Borden Ice Cream Company, Fort Wayne, died January 4 in the barn at his home, R. R. 2, Avilla, while doing his chores. He was employed by the Borden Company for 37 years before retiring in 1953, when he moved to this community from Fort Wayne. Surviving Mr. Hobson, a member of the Avilla First Methodist Church, are the widow, Dolly; three sons, Raymond, Thurman and Richard, all of Fort Wayne; two stepsons, Paul E. Bennett and Clarence L. Greder, Fort Wayne; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Marjorie Ponesa, Newark, N. J., and Doris Hobson and Martha Cox, Fort Wayne; fifteen grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Hochstetler Daniel R, 24, died from massive internal injuries in a tractor mishap at his Felger Road home Oct. 29. He and his wife had moved from R. 1, Kimmell two weeks ago. He was born in Noble County Oct. 29, 1955 to John and Marilyn Hochstetler of R. 1, Wawaka, and he married Jolene Schaefer May 28, 1977. He was a member of the Wawaka United Methodist Church, and he was an electrician at the Auburn Foundry. He is survived by his wife and parents; a brother, Ronald of Purdue University; and two sisters, Gail of Purdue and Mrs. Kevin Ferguson of Muncie. Hochstetler Earl "Adie", 59, Ligonier, died Thursday at his home of cancer. Born April 9, 1913 in Kalona, Iowa, he was the son of Joseph and Mary Ann (Stutsman) Hochstetler. He married Irene Duanfin March 12, 1938 in Goshen. A 30-year resident of Ligonier, he was a restaurant owner in Ligonier and belonged to the Ligonier Nazarene Church. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Raymond, Goshen, Robert, Constantine, Mich., and Jerry, Ligonier; three sisters, Mrs. Lee Schlabach, Apache Junction, Ariz., Mrs. Gertrude Schettler and Mrs. Susie Ulin, both of Wellman, Iowa; three brothers, Ben, Wellman, Iowa, Ora, Iowa City, Iowa, and Ira, Denver, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. Hochstetler Gladys Irene, 65, of R. 1, Topeka, died Feb. 11 in Goshen Hospital. Born Jan. 25, 1922 in LaGrange County, she was the daughter of Peter J. and Ada (Yoder) Wingard. On Nov. 26, 1942 in Topeka, she married Samuel A. Hochstetler. A lifetime Topeka area resident, she was a member of the Golden Agers Chorus of LaGrange County and LaGrange County Keenagers. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Stanley L. of Columbia City, and Richard L. of Goshen; a sister, Inez Weldy of Elkhart; and two brothers, Harley of Topeka, and Cletus of LaGrange; and seven grandchildren. Hochstetler Iris, 78, Kenney Health Care Center, Ligonier, died Thursday at the center. She was born May 22, 1908 in Millrock, Ohio to Hiram and Nancy (Miller) Butler. She married Sam Hochstetler June 17, 1961 in Brimfield. He died in 1976. She was retired from Essex Wire Co. and was a member of Ligonier Church of Christ. Surviving are two daughters, Agnes Frantz, Davenport, Fla., and Jacqueline DeMunck, Key West, Fla.; one sister, Edra Creeger, Lorain, Ohio; one brother, Walter, Lisbon, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Hochstetler Marilyn R, 68, died Oct. 19, 2002 at her Pleasant Lake residence. She was employed by Essex Wire, Crossroads Restaurant and Lyall Assemblies. She was a member of Pleasant Lake Mennonite Church. She was born May 24, 1934 in Noble County to Clarence and Erma (Damey) Meroney. She married John A. Hochstetler on March 16, 1958 in Wawaka. Surviving are her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Paula Hochstetler of Arlington, Va.; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Irma and Kevin Ferguson of South Bend and Gail and Steve Shively of Pleasant Lake; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Dorothy Meroney of Seymour, Tenn., and James and Joan Meroney of Watertown, S.D.; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Bonnie Roberts of Fort Wayne and Jean and Bill Bailey of Mesa, Ariz.; and 7 grandchildren. Hock Bertha, wife of Nicholas Hock of LaPorte, died at the Holy Family Hospital on April 6, 1922, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband; little daughter Jane; her mother Mrs. Ida Tibbs; one brother Henry Rhoda; one sister Mrs. Louis Cook; her foster mother Mrs. Mary E. Shanline of Avilla. Mrs. Hock was born in South Bend August 6, 1893. When about 6 years of age, Bertha came to the home of Mrs. Mary E. Shanline just west of Avilla where she spent her girlhood days. She was a student of the Avilla Public Schools, graduating from the common school in 1907. She then entered Avilla High School when she graduated in the class of 1911. The same year she entered the South Bend Business College. Later she was employed in that city by the Studebaker firm, where she held a responsible position and made good in her chosen work. Bertha affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church while in South Bend. On May 5, 1915, she married Nicholas Hock at Valparaiso. For a short time they resided in South Bend, later moving to the Shanline home just west of Avilla, where they lived until 1920, when they removed to LaPorte where they resided until her death. Hockenbarger Daisy Agnes died Saturday in Kendallville Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 8, 1887 to Frank and Margaret Ann (Leitch) Owen and was married in 1914 to William L. Hockenbarger, who died in 1960. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. George Kimmel, R. 2, Albion; one brother, Elvie, Albion. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Hockenbarger Elsie, 73, died in McCray Hospital Monday. She suffered a heart attack on Thursday. She was born Nov. 23, 1883 in Green Twp and was a member of the First Methodist Church in Kendallville. She had resided in Kendallville the past 42 years. Surviving are the husband, Joseph; two sons, John of Avilla, and Franklin of Kendallville; three daughters, Mrs. Steve Hornett and Mrs. Ford Diehl of Kendallville, and Mrs. Maurice Henke, Helmer; three brothers, Elvie Owen, Albion, George and Forrest Owen of Avilla; three sisters, Mrs. Daisy Hockenbarger, Ft. Hockenbarger Franklin, 90, of Kendallville died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. He retired in 1983 after 27 years with the Indiana & Michigan Electric Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 2749 and American Legion Post 381. He was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Kendallville to Joseph and Elsie (Owen) Hockenbarger. On Oct. 6, 1951, in Kendallville he married Bette Niswander. Surviving are his wife; and a sister, Leona Patterson of Avilla. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Hornett and Iva H. Diehl, and a brother, John Hockenbarger. Graveside services will be Tuesday in Orange Cemetery. He was born November 16, 1907 in Kendallville, the son of Joseph and Elsie (Owen) Hockenbarger. He married Vivian Weidler in 1954 in Kendallville. He was retired from International Harvester after 30 years’ service and was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Janet Porter, Bakersfield, Calif., and Josephine Waterbeck, Ferriday, La.; two sons, Maynard Clark, Indianapolis and Robert Hockenbarger, Fort Worth, Texas; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Franklin, Kendallville; three sisters, Agnes Hornett and Iva Deihl, Kendallville, and Leona Patterson, Helmer. Hockenbarger Robert Francis, 68, died Sept. 14, 2003 in Garland, Texas. An Air Force veteran, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was born April 6, 1935 in Kendallville to John W. and Leota (Beuchat) Hockenbarger. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nickole and Richard Block of Garland; and 3 grandchildren, Richard Jr., Jennifer and Ariel Block. Hockenbarger Viola, 70, died Wednesday at her home here from chronic intestinal nephritis. She was born June 16, 1864 near Wolcottville, the daughter of Cornelius and Diana Tryon. She married Albert Hockenbarger and the past 25 years they have operated the general store here. Hockenbarger Vivian, 72, Avilla’s Citizen of the Year in 1987, died Wednesday in St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove. Most recently she had resided with her son, Maynard Clark, in Indianapolis. She was born in DeKalb County Sept. 2, 1916, the daughter of Jay and Ina (Kistler) Weidler. She married John Hockenbarger in March 1954, and he died in 1982. She moved to Avilla in 1954 and served as Avilla clerk-treasurer from 1971 to 1979. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Surviving with her son are a stepdaughter, Janet Porter of Bakersfield, Calif.; a stepson, Robert Hockenbarger of Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Hodge Donald L "Don", 72, of Wolcottville, died at the VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born in Ligonier Feb. 8, 1914, the son of Melvin and Maude (Huff) Hodge. On April 12, 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he married Elisabeth G. Bower. A lifetime Noble and LaGrange County resident, he and his wife owned and operated Sanders Hardware in Wolcottville for 32 years until retiring in 1982. He was a WW II Army veteran and member of American Legion Post 110 and former Lions Club member. Surviving are his wife and his mother; a daughter, Jane Feller of Wolcottville; two sisters, Mrs. Richard H. (Dorothy) Targgart of Wolcottville, and Helen Grabill of Elkhart; two brothers, Ivan of LaGrange, and George of South Milford; two grandchildren, Dustin and Andrew Feller of Wolcottville. Hodge George William, 74, of South Milford, died Sunday at his residence following a two-year illness. Born in Ligonier, May 4, 1912, he was the son of Melvin and Maude (Huff) Hodge. On Aug. 27, 1938 in Leesburg he married Marcella Bidwell. A farmer, he moved from Brushy Prairie to South Milford in 1948. He had been a member of South Milford Fire Department for 35 years. Surviving are his wife and his mother; a daughter, Mrs. Doug (Barbara) Fennell of Howe; two sons, Howard of South Milford, and James of Kendallville; two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Targgart of Wolcottville, and Helen Grabill of Elkhart; a brother, Ivan of LaGrange; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Hodge Lois J, 71, of Kendallville, died April 18 in her residence. She was born in Auburn Aug. 6, 1926 to Fred and Gertrude (Schmenk) Funderburg. She had moved to Kendallville in 1970 from Marion. She held a sociology degree from the University of Michigan. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Women of the Moose and served on the board of the Noble County Red Cross. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Camilla Hodge of New York City; a granddaughter, Emma Hodge of New York; local cousins, LaVon Jansen, Kendallville, Russell and Robert Carteaux, Avilla, and Thomas Carteaux, Auburn. Hodge Maude E, 95, of Wolcottville, died Saturday in LaGrange Hospital. Born in Brimfield Jan. 27, 1892, she was the daughter of Henry and Lucy (Sheneman) Huff. On Oct. 8, 1908 in Noble County she married Melvin Hodge, who died in Jan. 1960. A lifetime resident of Noble and LaGrange Counties, she was a farmer’s wife, a member of the South Milford Home Ec Club, Friendship Club, Young At Heart Club and American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Targgart of Wolcottville, and Helen Grabill of Elkhart; a son, Ivan of LaGrange; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Hodge Pearl M, 76, who resided just off the Broadway Road southeast of Cromwell, died Tuesday at Luckey Hospital, Wolf Lake after a broken leg suffered in a fall at her home. She was born in Whitley County, was a member of the Broadway Christian Church, and had resided in this community all her lifetime. Surviving are her husband, Arby; one son, Bert of Veedersburg, Ind.; a brother, Thomas Beers of Etna; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Scott of Kimmell; and three grandchildren. Hoeffel Alphons A, 83, died May 22 in Byron Health Center. He was born Dec. 30, 1895 in Defiance, Ohio, the son of Michael and Mary (Wisenburger) Hoeffel. His first wife, Lucille Hill, whom he married in 1924, died in 1961. He later married Mary Kraus of Avilla, who died earlier this year. He was a WW I veteran, a retired employee of the B&O Railroad and formerly owned the Garrett Bowling Alley. He was a member of the Eagles, Elks, Knights of Columbus and VFW in Garrett and the Avilla American Legion Post 240. Hoffelder Fred P, 94, of Kendallville, died Sunday at his residence. He was born May 20, 1895 in Waterloo, the son of Peter H. and Kathryn (Schlosser) Hoffelder. In March 1920, he married Thelma Mays, who died in Sept. 1963. He moved from Waterloo to Kendallville in 1921. He retired from McCray Refrigerator Co. in 1963 after 39 years. Hoffer Aloysius was born in Baden, Germany 82 years ago. He came to Indiana 32 years ago and until two years ago was a resident of Avilla, where many friends will miss his familiar figure. Hoffert George J, 96, formerly of Ligonier, died Friday in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Ligonier. He was born Aug. 19, 1889 in Vinton, Iowa to George and Amelia (Schnuckel) Hoffert. He was married to Mary Kawa. He had lived in Rochester before residing at Heritage Manor. Prior to that he had lived in Ligonier where he owned a tin shop. He was a member of the Ligonier Eagles Lodge. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Dorothy Waldron of Topeka; two sons, Archie of North Webster, and Russell of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Minnie Domonique of Fort Wayne and Lena Reid of Pierceton; and one brother, Joseph of Larwill. Hoffman Arminta Palmer, 83, died last Thursday (b. 6-22-1879 - d. 7-5-1962) at her home on S. Orange St. She was the widow of the former Noble County sheriff, William Hoffman, who served in 1932 and 1934. She was the last of a large family, and her husband was also one of a large family, all of whom have died. She had lived her entire life in Noble County. Hoffman Basil D, 66, died Thursday in VA Medical Center, Indianapolis. He was a lifetime resident of the Garrett area and worked as an independent insurance agent and a farmer. He was born in Noble County on July 1, 1919 to George and Nannie (Wright) Hoffman. He later married Lenora Killworth. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Sharon George of Garrett, and Colleen Alwood of Montgomery, Ala.; a son, Thomas of Garrett; a sister, Violet DePew of Columbia City; two half-sisters and one half-brother, all of Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hoffman Betty L, 71, a resident of Albion, was found dead at her residence April 19, 2001. She was born January 18, 1930 in Swan Twp, Noble County, to Alfred and Naomi (Renkenberger) Fulk. She graduated from Huntertown High School in 1948. On January 15, 1953 she married George J. Hoffman. They spent most of their married life in Green Twp, Noble County, and lived for a period at Sylvan Lake near Rome City, where he died on August 9, 1988. She moved to Albion in 1993. She had been employed at several factories when a young woman and retired in 1985 from Byron Health Center after 16 years due to ill health. A daughter, Candice, died July 2, 1971. Surviving are 2 daughters, Sherri (Mrs. Noel) Gaff of Churubusco, and Cindy (Mrs. Dave) Fulk of Columbia City; 3 sons, Randall and Brian (wife Jodie) Hoffman of Churubusco, and Jeffrey (wife Heather) Hoffman of Spencerville; a brother, Richard Fulk of Avilla; and a sister, Doris Householder of Albion; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Hoffman Elvina, 95, native of Ohio and a resident of Noble County for more than 73 years, died Sunday at the home of her son William. She was born May 9, 1831 in Morrow County, O., the youngest of a family of 11 born to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Walker. On May 31, 1850 she married John Hoffman, who died April 23, 1899. Two years after their marriage they came to Noble County and located on a farm in Jefferson Twp were he died. Hoffman George W, 89, retired farmer and merchant, native and lifelong resident of Noble County and a citizen of Kendallville almost 50 years, died at the family home in that city Friday. He was born March 21, 1861 near Albion, the son of John and Alvina Walker Hoffman. In early life he engaged in farming and in 1894 married Ida Butz in York Twp. Twice during his career he engaged in business, operating a meat market in Albion from 1895 to 1900. The family moved to Kendallville in 1905. His second venture in business was when he purchased the hardware store of Cawley & Cawley, now known as the Kendallville Hardware. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Hoffman Jeremy, 23, died Sunday following an automobile accident in Fort Wayne earlier in the evening. He was born Aug. 23, 1979 in Kendallville to Sherri Hoffman and Alden Ray McClure. Hoffman Jesse, son of Adam and Susan Hoffman, and the youngest of ten children, was born in York Twp, York County, Pa., March 26, 1833, and died at the home of his son, Arthur Hoffman in Cleveland, Ohio, February 29, 1920, aged eighty-six years, eleven months and three days. All of his brothers and sisters preceded him to the other shore. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Crawford County, Ohio, where his mother died in 1839. In 1840 he went to Morrow County, Ohio to reside with relatives. When he arrived at the age of nineteen years he became an apprentice to learn the wagon makers’ trade, where he served two years becoming very proficient in his work. On (illegible) Albion, where he remained a continuous resident until his demise, with the exception of the last few years when he made his home with his children, the greater part of this time at the home of his son. On April 27, 1855, he married Nancy C. Ayers, and they had two sons, Arthur of Cleveland, Ohio, Thurlow A., deceased; two daughters, Josephine, deceased, who was the wife of M. R. Hoyt of Branch County, Mich., and Flora, wife of H. G. Garmire of Marion, Ind. He was preceded in death by his companion August 1914, son Thurlow and daughter Josephine. He is survived by one son, Arthur, one daughter, Flora, six grandchildren. He united with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1859 and was engaged in the wagon and carriage making trade in Albion from the year 1853 until a few years previous to his death. Hoffman John was born in Jefferson Twp February 6, 1859, the son of John and Elvina Hoffman. He was one of nine children, two sisters and the parents having preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters and four brothers. They are Mrs. Lucy Eddy and Mrs. Jennie Bowen of Kendallville, George of Kendallville, Allen, William and James of Albion. In December 1888 he was married to Irene Kimmell. They had two sons, Dean of Joliet, Ill., and Neal of near Albion. There are four grandchildren also surviving. His life was spent near Albion until in 1918 he went to make his home at Ellaville, Georgia. He had been in declining health for several months but recently he seemed to be in an improved condition. Hoffman John H, 92, of Ligonier, died at his home in that city May 15 of heart disease. Funeral was held at the home May 18 and burial in Oak Park Cemetery. He served several terms in the Indiana General Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives. He was a member of Company K, 44th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. A Republican, he served several years as a member of the board of trustees of the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Orphan Home at Knightstown and was an active member of the M. E. Church. At one time he was engaged in the book and stationery business in Ligonier and for the last several years was associated with banking and manufacturing interests in Ligonier. His wife died several years ago. No children survive. A niece, Miss Maude Middleton, lived with him since the death of Mrs. Hoffman. + 5-?-1938

Hoffman Michael B died at his residence near the Beulah Church on the Hawpatch Feb. 22, 1893, aged 57 years, 7 months and 24 days. He was born in Lancaster County, Penn., June 28, 1835. He came to Indiana in 1855 and was married to Sarah Ann Dallas Aug. 28, 1859 and soon settled on a farm where he resided until his death. He was the father of four children, two sons and four daughters. His sons, two daughters and companion survive. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Independence. Hoffman William, 64, ex-sheriff and a native and lifelong resident of Noble County, was found dead in bed at his home on Main St., Albion, this morning by his wife. It is believed he had a heart attack. He was born near Albion in April 1860, the son of the late John and Elvina Hoffman. He served 3 terms as Democratic sheriff of Noble County, from Jan. 1, 1924 to 1926, from Jan. 1, 1930 to Jan. 1, 1934. In the summer of 1932 he developed blood poison in his right leg which resulted in amputation above the knee. He was afflicted with diabetes. Surviving are the widow; 2 daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Magnuson and Mrs. Ollie Forker of Albion; a son, Earl of Mishawaka; 8 grandchildren; 3 brothers, James of near Kendallville, George of Kendallville, and Allie, northeast of Albion; and 2 sisters, Mrs. W. She was born in Erie, Pa. in 1826, and at an early age came with her parents to Ohio and a few years later came to Indiana, where she has lived for the past 80 years. She was married in 1846, her husband dying in 1872. They had 6 children, 3 of whom have preceded her in death. Hohman Bonnie M, 100, of Kendallville died April 22, 2011 in Gardens at Lake City, Warsaw. She had worked in retail sales all of her life, including at the Cinderella in Kendallville and managing Seagly’s Gift Shop in Kendallville for 15 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kendallville, Eastern Star, of Sigma Beta and the Lady Elks all of Kendallville. She was born in Fremont, Michigan, on October 13, 1910, to William H. and Blanche (Woodward) Gohn. On April 11, 1931, in Kendallville she married Oswald E. “Ozzie” Hohman. He died May 12, 1971. Hoke Jacob was crushed to death yesterday. While about his duties as railway flagman for the Monon Railway at Hammond yesterday, the father of Mrs. George D. Ruthven and Mrs. F. O. Wirick of this city was struck by a train and instantly killed. He lived here for many years and was employed in various butcher shops of the city. He left here perhaps 10 or 12 years ago. Holbrooks lived in Fort Wayne before moving to the Albion community in 1968. He was supervisor at Lincoln Mfg. in Fort Wayne. He was born in 1927 in Kansas, the son of Buell and Ethel Jinks Holbrook. He and Elaine Soderling were married in 1947 in Reno. She survives, along with their children, a daughter, Nancy J. at home; three sons, S. Michael, Fort Wayne, David, Albion, and John at home. Whitford who died in his 38th year, and Oscar B. who died in his 6th year; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Nancy L. Waits of Lamar, Mo., and Mrs. Clara A. Holbrook of LaOtto. Her first husband died Aug. 26, 1863, and she was married to Lewis Holbrook Feb. 25, 1867. She was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church. They had four sons and four daughters; Blanch, Bertha, Gladys, Emma, Lyman, Forrest, Lee Ports and Howard. Surviving are the husband, the children; two grandchildren and one brother. Holbrook Lee L, 65, of R. 3, Kendallville, died Saturday in McCray Hospital. Born in LaOtto Feb. 16, 1914, he was the son of Lyman and Osie (Kelham) Holbrook. He married Josephine Hornett in Kendallville, Nov. 26, 1936. She survives. He had lived in Kendallville the past 50 years coming from LaOtto. He retired after 40 years with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Holbrook Lee Ports, 65, of R. 1, LaOtto, died of a heart attack July 6 on the lawn of O. P. Maurer, South Garrett. He was a member of the Huntertown Masonic Lodge. Holbrook Lewis was born in St. Lawrence County, New York Oct. 12, 1821; died at his residence in Kendallville Nov. 27, 1895, aged 74 years 1 month and 15 days. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Noble County, having moved with his parents to Indiana in 1833. The journey was made by way of Toledo, partly by steam navigation and the rest of the way in wagons. His church home was with the Wesleyan Methodists at LaOtto. He was bereft of the wife of his youth some 30 years ago and was married to Mrs. Loretta Whitford in 1868, who preceded him in death in 1891. She was born in South Whitley, Ind., February 23, 1917, the daughter of Earl and Lela (Moore) Williamson. She was married to Norman Wert in July 1933. He died in May 1965. On Dec. 22, 1968 she was married to Robert C. Holcomb, who survives. Holcomb Merle, 85, died Feb. 25, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born Sept. 11, 1890 in Kansas to Walter L. and Cleah (Schrader) Holcomb. He moved to Kendallville as a child and resided in Fort Wayne after retiring in 1962. He moved to Colorado Springs two years ago. He was a retired longtime printer for Fort Wayne Newspapers, Inc., agent for the Journal Gazette. He worked at The Journal-Gazette as a linotype operator 1913-1917. He established a job shop in Kendallville in 1917 but returned to Fort Wayne in 1930 for 32 years of uninterrupted service. He was a member of Fort Wayne Newspapers Quarter Century Club and First Christian Church. One brother preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, Morton, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Mrs. Merriam Zimmerman, Rome City, and Mrs. Forrest Rollins, Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Holcomb Nona May, 81, of 413 N. State St., died today at McCray Hospital. Born in Crawfordsville March 22, 1901, she was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Gillem. On July 7, 1924 in Albion she married C. L. "Bob" Holcomb who died Aug. 19, 1961. In 1952 she purchased the Dinner Bell Cafe, which she operated for some time, and for 10 years was pastry chef at the V&A Restaurant. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its ladies circle. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. E. O. (Virginia) Smith of Seattle, Was.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Holcomb Thurlo C, 95, died Thursday in Kendallville Manor Health Care Center. He was born in Noble County April 19, 1894, the son of Elmer and Leona (Skeels) Holcomb. Holden Horace, an old settler, died at his home in Rome City of catarrh of the stomach and bowels March 5. He was born May 16, 1829 in Marie Town, Maples County, Canada, thus making him 66 years 9 months and 20 days of age. In 1836 he moved near this place with his parents. His boyhood days were spent on the farm, part of which is now the cemetery in which he is buried. In 1857 he married Mrs. Charlotte Young. They had 7children, 6 of whom with their mother, 2 children by a former marriage, 4 stepchildren and one sister survive. Funeral at Freewill Baptist Church March 7. Hole Ralph and Nellie - Miss Laura Rupp recently received a letter from Miss Gertrude Hole telling of the death of her sister, Nellie, and brother , Ralph, which occurred on the 11th and 12th of Feb. Both deaths were due to brain fever following influenza, and the young people were buried in the same grave. Ralph would have been 18 the day he was buried. Holey Emma, daughter of John and Susan Daniels, was born Jan. 3, 1871 near Wawaka. In September 1892 she married Shilo Holey at Brimfield. Four children were born, 2 girls passing on in early infancey, Jesse F. residing with his father in Big Rapids, Mich., and Helen B Wilmer, a resident at Morley, Mich. They resided near Cosperville until about 6 years ago, when they moved to a farm near Big Rapids, Michigan. Holler Garnett Louise (Shane), 73, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday in Parkview Hospital following open heart surgery. She was born May 25, 1915 in Martinsville. On Dec. 2, 1939 in Terre Haute she married Ralph Harrison Holler. She moved to Kendallville in 1946 and ran a foster parent facility and day care service in her home for 15 years. She was a member of Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority where she was a violinist in a string ensemble whose performances included participation in over 20 high school musicals. She was a member of Wayne Center and Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville. In 1983 she and her husband moved to Fort Wayne. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Shelby Miller of Redding, Conn., and Nancy Cook of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; two sons, Ralph Jr., Fort Wayne, and James, Kendallville; a sister, Ruth Pearcy of Martinsville; and nine grandchildren. Hollis Andrew, 89, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital at Garrett, Tuesday. He was born at Ossian November 20, 1865 and came to Garrett approximately 70 years ago where he worked as a carpenter for the B & O Railroad until he started to work at carpenter work for himself about forty years ago. He was preceded in death by his wife on July 10, 1926 and since lived by himself in Garrett. Of 12 children, six are still living: Robert of Avilla; Mrs. Claude McLaughlin, Leo, Albert, Andrew Jr. and Germaine Hollis all of Garrett. There are 13 grandchildren. Hollis Robert R, 81, of Avilla, died December 8, 2000 at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville. He had retired from Garrett Flexible Rubber Products and served as custodian for St. Mary's School for several years and as a crossing guard for the Avilla School. He was a lifelong Noble County resident and lived in Avilla for 55 years. A former member of the Avilla Fire Department, he belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avilla, the Avilla Lions Club, the Garrett Knights of Columbus and the Avilla Chamber of Commerce, by whom he was named a Citizen of the Year. He was born June 10, 1919 in Garrett to Andrew and Ida (Richards) Hollis. On September 2, 1941 in Ege he married Mary Hosler, who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Robert Jr. of Fort Wayne, Larry of Wolcottville, and Jerry of Tri-Lakes; 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Hollopeter Bertha, 101, of Green Twp, died July 11 in Strawberry Village Nursing Home at Ligonier. She was the oldest resident of Green Twp and possibly the oldest in Noble County. She was born in Allen County April 26, 1874 to John and Elizabeth Friend Spitler. She married Milton Hollopeter and they lived on an Allen County farm until 1916 when they moved to North Vernon. In 1930 they moved to Noble County. Her husband died in 1950. She was a former member of Charter Oak Methodist Church. Holman James Elsworth was one of a family of 9 children born to William and Susan Holman. Of this family of children, one brother and three sisters had preceded him in death. He was born in DeKalb County December 19, 1865 and died in Noble County October 3, 1925 at the age of 59 years, 9 months and 14 days. On October 24, 1889, he married Alice Lung, and they had 3 children, Ray Elsworth, living near Avilla, Fern Del Rey of Fort Wayne, and Lena, the latter together with the wife having preceded him in death. On November 19, 1905 he was united in marriage with Laura Rebecca Irvin, moving with her in 1908 to the farm on which he continued to reside until the final summons came. Other survivors include four brothers, John of Carlton, Wash., Philip of Auburn, Calvin and Howard near Corunna; two stepdaughters, Grace Foster, living on the farm, and Pearl Frankenberg of Kendallville; two grandchildren. A lifetime Kendallville resident, he was retired as clerk and deliveryman for Atz Furniture. Holmes Lemuel J was born in Baltimore, Md. Dec. 9, 1822; and died at his home near Kendallville March 14, aged 76 years 8 months and 5 days. When 2 years of age he came to Ohio with his parents, who settled on a farm near Mount Vernon. On Nov. 14, 1844 he married Nancy Young of Knox County, Ohio. They removed to DeKalb County, Ind. in 1851 and by hard labor and careful industry succeeded in building up a beautiful home in the new country. Some years later they moved to the home near Kendallville. They had 6 children, the youngest son, Franklin, dying at the early age of 15. Three daughters, Mrs. A. H Willits of Ligonier, Mrs. J. M. Haines of Avilla, and Mrs. J. W. Wilson of this city; and 2 sons, E. M. of Swan and H. S. of Santa Barbara, Calif. are living. His wife died Sept. 29, 1895. On Sept. 20, 1896 he married Mary Gillian. She removed with her parents from Fayette Penn. to Knox County in the year 1836. On the 22nd day of Nov. 1844 she was married to Lemuel J. Holmes. They had three sons and three daughters. Holse John O, 63, of R. 1, Rome City, died Wednesday at his residence. Born Jan. 2, 1922 in Sana Cacio, Colo., he was the son of Rudolph and Olina (Jensen) Holse. On Oct. 30, 1958 in Germany he married Margot Zahn. He moved to Rome City from Kankakee, Ill. eight years ago. He was retired from 23 years of service in the U. S. Army and was part-time bartender at Kendallville VFW Post. He was a member of Bradley VFW Post 6502 in Bradley, Ill. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Karen Silfies of Ashkum, Ill., and Jerri Fancher of Kankakee; a sister, Esther Fecter of Fort Wayne; four brothers, Robert of Ashley, Roy of Fort Wayne, Jack of Rochester, and Franklin of Burbank, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Holsinger Harry D, 90, of Rome City, died Nov. 15, 2009 at Life Care Center in LaGrange. He was born in Rome City on June 23, 1919 to Neil and Georgia (Brown) Holsinger. He graduated from Rome City High School and attended Purdue University. He married Lucille Sites on Sept. 17, 1939 in Rome City and they operated the Holsinger Market grocery in Rome City from 1940 to 1979. He was a member of the Rome City United Methodist Church, Volunteer Fire Dept., and Lions Club and served as a Noble County Commissioner for 3 years. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Karen and Delmer Richmond of Fort Wayne; a son, Don and Kathy Holsinger of Ligonier; 5 grandchildren (Note: 6 named), Michael and Sandy Richmond, Mark and Esther Richmond, Matthew Richmond, Holly and Doug Richcreek, Kelly Rose, Steve and April Holsinger; 10 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephan on Nov. 6, 1999; a granddaughter, Dedra Holsinger in June 1999; and infant grandson, Brian Holsinger in 1973; and a sister, Mary Stewart. Holsinger Jacob died at his home in Wolcottville Sunday at the age of 84 years of lung fever. He was a brother of John Holsinger who died in this city 2 or 3 years ago. He was never married. ^ 2-11-1887
Holsinger John died on Tuesday. He was born in Stark County, Ohio Jan. 9, 1817 and was 68 years, 6 months and 4 days of age. He was one of the early pioneers of northern Indiana, having moved here in 1841. His first wife, Eliza Sherman, died July 27, 1847, leaving 3 children, William, Angeline and Albert. His second wife, Mary Ann Stroman, died July 7, 1871, leaving 6 children, Sylvester, John F., Francis F., Adrian, Dora and Ida. During the same year he was married to Mrs. Susan Nichols, who survives. They had 2 sons, one of whom, Walter, is living. He moved to this city nearly 2 years ago and purchased the residence on Garden St. where he died. His funeral will take place this afternoon at the M. E. Church. The remains will be taken to Wolcottville on the 5:30 train for interment. ^ 7-24-1885
Holsinger Lucille J, 92, of Rome City, died July 24, 2013 at the Life Care Center in LaGrange. She was born in Fort Wayne on July 28, 1920, to Dewey and Jeannette (Smithers) Sites. She graduated from Rome City High School in 1938. She married Harry Holsinger on September 17, 1939 in Rome City and he died November 15, 2009. She was a member of the Rome City United Methodist Church. Survivors include, one son, Donald (Kathy) Holsinger of Ligonier; one daughter, Karen (Delmer) Richmond of Fort Wayne; 6 grandchildren, Micheal (Sandy) Richmond, Mark (Esther) Richmond, Matthew Richmond and Marty Gilbert, Holly (Doug) Richcreek, Kelly (Jake) Tusing and Steve (April) Holsinger; 11 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Cobbs of West Jefferson, Ohio; and one brother, Tom (Pat) Fitch. Homsher Martha, a lifelong resident of Noble County, having lived most of her life in Albion, Allen and Jefferson Townships, died at McCray Hospital Feb. 27, 1950. She was taken to the hospital Sunday after neighbors had found her unconscious at her Albion home, where she is presumed to have suffered a heart attack and lay helpless for several hours in an unheated room. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church, born June 2, 1883 to John D. and Margaret Black. Her husband, Vern, preceded her in death by several years. Homsher Vern E, 56, ended his life yesterday by hanging. Funeral will be Thursday at the residence near Mt. Pleasant. Burial, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. He had been in ill health for some time, suffering from apoplexy. Coroner Hutchins was told that he had made one threat to end his life. Apparently Homsher was in usual spirits yesterday. After eating dinner with his wife, he left the room and was absent 15 minutes before Mrs. Homsher began a search for him. His lifeless form was found hanging from a rafter in the implement shed. Using a chair and a crate to raise himself from the floor, Homsher jumped from the crate. He was born in Orange Twp December 6, 1881, the son of Samuel and Harriet Homsher. The family then moved to Jefferson Twp and shortly following, moved to this city when the decedent was 20 years of age. Samuel Homsher became employed as janitor of the Kendallville public schools. He resided in this city for a year and then moved to his late home near Mt. Pleasant. In 1904 he married Martha Black, Jefferson Twp, the couple engaging in farming at the present home. He was actively associated with the Mt. Pleasant Evangelical Lutheran Church and took a marked interest in church work. Since stricken with apoplexy last summer, he had been despondent. Honaker Anna Florence, 96, of Wolcottville, died January 13, 2007 at her home. She moved to this area in 1935 from Kentucky. She worked at McCray Refrigeration in Kendallville from 1941 to 1947. She then worked at Kirsch Co. in Sturgis, Mich. and retired in 1975 with 28 years of service. She next worked at Miller's Merry Manor in LaGrange as a nurses' aide for 3 years and then in the meat department at Wolcottville IGA from 1981 to retirement in 2002. Hontz Anna M, 68, was born Aug. 22, 1860 in Noble County, the oldest of a family of ten children born to Robert J. and Abigail (Adair) Luckey, three of whom died in early childhood. In 1888 she married Dr. William C. Hontz, and they had two daughters, Helen and Edith. Helen died at the age of 14, and the doctor died in March 1925, leaving only Edith surviving, with three sisters, three brothers and an uncle, Dr. T. E. Adair who lives in Kansas at a ripe old age. Prior to her marriage she taught in the public schools of Noble and Whitley Counties. She passed away Friday night at the home of her brother, Joseph Luckey, near Churubusco. Hontz Daniel S, 74, of Noble Twp, died Feb. 9 at his farm home two miles south of Wolf Lake on State Road 33. Funeral is to be this afternoon from the home. Hontz Mabel, 89, lifelong Cromwell resident, died Friday at Lakeland Loving Care Nursing Home in Milford. She was born May 23, 1895 in Washington Twp in the house where her only daughter, Mrs. Emerson Bushong, and her family live now. She lived there until marrying Leroy M. Hontz on June 11, 1913. They moved to Garrett where he was a dispatcher on the B&O Railroad. They lived there several years before moving back to the farm. She was the daughter of Robert W. and Gertrude Baker Bause. She was a member of the Cromwell United Methodist Church and of the Indian Village Ladies Group. She was an only child, as was her husband. An infant son, Herbert, preceded her in death many years ago. Survivors are her daughter, Marjorie; and her grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas Hively, Kimmell, Mrs. Monte Gerig, Churubusco, Dan Bushong, Washington Twp, and Stephen Bushong, Churubusco; her great-grandchildren, Ingrid Lukus and Les Hively, Trent and Tiffany Gerig, Stefanie and Scott Bushong. Hontz Neal F, died at his home Saturday of a heart attack. He had no previous history of heart trouble. He operated the Hontz Insurance Agency here for many years, was vice president of the Cromwell State Bank and had been a director of the bank the past 15 years. He was a charter member of the Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club, a member of the Cromwell Methodist Church, the Knights of Pythias and the Cromwell Business Association. He was born in Cromwell on June 20, 1897, the son of Harvey H. and Bessie (McKinney) Hontz, and had resided in Cromwell all his life. On Sept. 1, 1900 she married Jonathan Hontz, who died in 1937. Her entire married life was spent in Washington Twp. She was a member of the Ormas Baptist Church and was a 50-year member of the Etna-Ruth Rebekah Lodge.
