Hay Malinda A, 64, a resident of the Lutheran Home in Kendallville, died there today. Born in Fort Wayne May 1, 1919, she was the daughter of Fred and Katherine (Elett) Rodenbeck. Her husband, Clarence, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Surviving is one sister, Lorinda Rodenbeck of Indianapolis. Services at Hite Funeral Home Friday with burial in Concordia Cemetery. + 3-20-1984
Hayden Clyde, 83, R. 2, Kendallville, died Wednesday in the Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. Born Nov. 11, 1894, in Missouri, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Hayden. He founded Hayden Welding Co. in 1921. The company is now managed by his son. Survivors include two sons, Russell, R. 2, Kendallville, Harold, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Arthur (Betty) Ordas, R. 1, Huntertown; two daughters; three brothers; eleven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Hayden Lester "Speedy", 67, Ligonier, died Sunday in Goshen Hospital. He was born Dec. 4, 1906 in Topeka to Lucian and Goldie (Baer) Hayden and married June 17, 1928 Vivian Bussie. A retired automobile body repairman, he had lived the past 46 years in Ligonier, and prior to that in Topeka. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Aurel) Sittloh, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Tom (Anne) Ringer, Ligonier; one son, William, South Bend; a stepson, Ronald Bussie, Walkerton; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Haid, Elkhart, and Mrs. Durwood Fant, Miami, Fla.; and one brother, John, Warsaw. Hayden Mary Frances, 77, died March 7, 2002 at Parkview Noble Hospital. She graduated in 1943 from Rome City High School and in 1948 earned a degree from the Ball State University School of Nursing. She worked for several years as a nurse at McCray Hospital and for a short time in Calif. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Kendallville and of Kendallville's local Wool Spinners and Weavers Guild. She was born March 8, 1924 in Kendallville to Cleo and Ruth Groh. She married Russell Lowell Hayden on Feb. 7, 1947 at the Mitchell St. Methodist Church in Kendallville. Surviving are her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Debbie Hayden of Kendallville; and 4 grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachary, Summer and Haley Hayden. Hayden Russell L, 83, of Kendallville, died May 28, 2010 at his home. He was born in Kendallville on Dec. 23, 1926 to Clyde and Ruth (Sower) Hayden. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and married Mary Frances Groh on Feb. 7, 1947 in Kendallville. She died March 7, 2002. His father started Hayden Welding in Kendallville in 1929. He puchased the business in 1946. He took on the Honda name in 1965 and changed the name of the business to Hayden Honda. His son, Kurt, owns and operates it today. He was a member of the American Legion Post 86. Survivors include a son, Kurt and Debbie Hayden of Kendallville; 2 grandsons, Nick and Natasha Hayden and Zack Hayden; 2 granddaughters, Summer and Tyler Moser and Haley Hayden; and great-grandchildren, Lex and Lilly Moser and Fyodor Hayden. Hayden Vivian P, 68, Ligonier, died today at Strawberry Village Nursing Home. Born March 30, 1909 in Chicago, she was the daughter of James and Aurel (Cunningham) Bussie. On June 17, 1928 she married Lester "Speedy" Hayden in Elkhart. He died Dec. 23, 1973. She was a 50-year resident of Ligonier and had previously lived in Topeka and Chicago. Surviving are one son, William, South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Aurel Sittloh, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Tim (Anne) Ringler, Ligonier; and 4 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Howard, Plymouth, Orlo, Walkerton; and one sister, Mrs. Violet Maravioiv, Anderson, Calif. Hayes Adolph R, 68, a CPA attorney, died Monday in the VA Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was a native of Noble County and in June 1921 married Ruth Smith. They lived in Decorah, Iowa until about two years ago when they returned to Ligonier. Surviving are the wife, two daughters, 3 grandchildren, and 2 sisters. Hayes Dale, 93, died Saturday at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla. He was born in Albion to Louie and Metta Hayes on Oct. 17, 1901. He married Betty Wiegner. He owned and operated Hayes Grocery Store in Ligonier until moving to Fla. 20 years ago. He managed the Inverness A&P Grocery and was a member of the Rotary Club with 25 years of perfect attendance. He was a member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife; a son, Robert of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Janice Hood of Fort Wayne; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Hayes Gerald C, 85, died Thursday at Elkhart General Hospital. He was employed at Miller-Jones Shoe Store in Ligonier for 39 years and served as Perry Twp Trustee for 10 years. A WW II U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, and the West Noble American Legion Post. He was born April 21, 1914 in Dunkirk, Ohio, to Dale and Leon (Gardner) Hays. He married Catheleen A. Stroman in Albion in 1939. He is survived by his wife and a sister, Mary E. Smith of Ligonier. Hayes Grant, 74, died Aug. 10 at his home in Omaha Neb. A former employee of the Burgess-Nash store, he had been retired for the past 20 years. A Spanish-American War veteran, he was also a former grand master of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include the widow, Kristine; daughter, Mrs. Walter J. Davis; sons, Arthur D., Omaha, Lester W., Bethany, Mo., Fred A., and Joseph G., Kansas City, Mo. Services were Friday from the Hulse & Riepen Chapel. Burial, West Lawn. Hayes Harry H "Jack", 54, Ligonier, died Wednesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Aug. 13, 1925 in Waveland, he was the son of Charles and Nell (Robards) Hayes. On July 31, 1943 in Waveland he married Clara "Pat" E. McDonald. He had lived in Ligonier since 1970, coming from Lafayette. He was a retired truck driver, most recently driving for Shoup Buses, Inc. of Middlebury, and was a Ligonier city policeman until he was forced to retire because of ill health. He was an Army veteran of WW II and a member of Ligonier VFW Post 3931. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. David (Dina) Hochstetler of Ligonier; two sons, H. David of Elkhart; and Robert D. of Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Roger (Martha Ann) Miller of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Vern of Waveland; and four grandchildren. Hayes Helen L, 77, died Jan. 12, 1992 at West Florida Hospital, Pensacola, Fla. Hayes Jean Rosemary, 59, died at home Saturday. She was born in New Carlisle and moved to Inverness 10 years ago from Fort Wayne. She and her husband, Bob, owned and operated Hayes Health Foods of Inverness. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Inverness. Surviving are her husband, Robert D. of Inverness; 3 sons, Kevin, Bryan and Richard of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, Debra Herring of Lakeland; 2 brothers, Arthur "Bud" Maners of Spencer and Emmett E. Hayes John was born Feb. 12, 1834 in Fremont, County Cork, Ireland, and died April 30, aged 71 years 2 months and 18 days. He came to America in 1850 and worked as a farm laborer in York state until 1857 when he went to Bronson, Mich. Here he married Ellen Kehoe, and they had 3 children, Ella, Mary and Emma. He married the second time Hannah Cunningham of Coldwater, Mich. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom, except one son, M. T. of San Francisco, were present at the funeral. The daughters, Mrs. C. A. Hollibaugh and Miss Josephine live at Elkhart. J. B. is with the Gen. Supt. of the B&O RR., C. T. is air brake inspector at Elkhart for the Lake Shore Railway, and H. M. travels out of Indianapolis for H. C. Huston & Co. Mr. Hayes came to Kendallville in 1867 and here for 21 years he was identified with the G.R.&I. Railway as section foreman. Hayes Leona E, 82, Rome City, died Tuesday in Luckey Memorial Nursing Home, Wolf Lake. She was born Sept. 13, 1892 in Dunkirk, Ohio to Phineus and Callie (Sorgen) Gardner. She moved to Rome City 18 years ago from Ligonier, where she had been an employee of Wirk Garment Co. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Women’s Relief Corps in Ligonier. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Smith, Ligonier; one son, Gerald C., Ligonier; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral Friday in Ulrey Funeral Home, Ligonier. Hayes Robert D, 26, R. 3, Fremont, died Jan. 30. Less than 24 hours after he had been charged with molesting three teenage boys at the Cole Center YMCA in Kendallville, he took his own life. He was born Dec. 12, 1960 in Arlington Heights, Ill. to Joseph B. and Virginia (Lehman) Hayes. He was physical activities director at the Cole Center Family YMCA in Kendallville. Surviving are his parents in Kendallville; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Menno Lehman of Berne; two sisters, Mrs. Chris (Suzan) Courter of Fairfield, Ohio, and Judy, a student at Purdue University, West Lafayette. Hayes Robert L, 79, died Thursday in Miller's Merry Manor in Columbia City. He was born Sept. 4, 1914 in Rockville to Lewis and Della (Torr) Hayes. On April 27, 1937 in Marshall, Ill. he married Helen L. Albright. She died in 1992. He graduated from Brazil High School and Indiana State Teacher's College. He was a West Noble High School teacher of accounting, typing, bookkeeping and shorthand. He was a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert of Columbia City, and John "Toby" of Ligonier; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death. Hayes Ruth, 78, of Greencastle, formerly of Chicago, died Oct. 11 at Greencastle. Born May 25, 1899 in Noble County, she was the daughter of Ellis and Anna (Earl) Smith. She was a member of the Methodist Church and OES. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Joanne) Lyon, Greencastle, Mrs. Jerome (Patricia) Garnes, Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Robert Hayes Lyon, Chicago, Ann Lyon Baker, Indianapolis, Patricia Lyon, Greencastle. Hayes Susan was the daughter of John and Julia Miller and was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, Nov. 29, 1828 and died at her old home just east of Albion Aug. 3, 1921, being 92 years, 8 months and 4 days of age. More than 70 years ago she came to Indiana and has lived on the same farm for 64 years. In Ohio in 1846 she was married to William Hayes. They had 8 children, 3 of whom, Marshal, Charlie, and Phoebe, with the husband, preceded her in death. The surviving children are Cyrus, John, Stanley, Grant and Mrs. Julia Foote. Eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren also survive. "Mother" Hayes as she was commonly called, was one of the old pioneers of Noble County. She helped to clear up the forests and make the country what it is today. During the Civil War she was left alone and kept the farm going herself, working day after day in the fields, keeping her children with her. Funeral at Sweet Church. Haynes Addie, about 60, died July 30, 1944 at McCray Hospital where she was being treated for asthma, from which she died. She had recently purchased the Riley St. Grocery and had been managing and operating it with the assistance of her daughter, Veneda. She had been a resident of Kendallville for 30 years. She is survived by her daughter Veneda and two sons, Gerald and Everett, all of Kendallville; and one daughter, Mrs. Keith Seymoure of Albion. Calvin Miller of Jackson, Mich. is a brother. Haynes Barbara, 54, died Friday at Willow Ridge Living Center, Fort Wayne. She was born Aug. 9, 1930 in Garrett to J. Kenneth and Arminnie (Young) Krider. She married Raymond Haynes June 19, 1955 in Garrett. She was the society editor at the Garrett Clipper from Sept. 7, 1973 until Nov. 19, 1982. She was named Garrett’s Citizen of the Year in May 1977 and a member of Garrett United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Greg, Garrett, and Kenneth, Bowling Green, Ohio; one brother, Joe, Garrett; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Pat) Lublow, Constantine, Mich.; and three grandchildren. ~ 2-7-1985
Haynes Betty L, 63, of Avilla, died March 6, 2010 at Parkview Noble Hospital. She and her husband owned BJ's small Engine Repair in Avilla and she worked for Electric Motors in Garret, LaOtto Mfg and Hays Tap. She was a 1964 graduate of Avilla High School and a member of Avilla American Legion Post 240 Auxiliary. She was born April 11, 1946 in Fort Wayne to Herman and Mildred (Isenbarger) Krock. On April 3, 1970 in Kendallville she married William J. Haynes. Surviving are her husband, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Tyler and Kim Haynes of Avilla and Troy and Michelle Haynes of Kendallville; 4 grandchildren, Hilary Didier, Nathan Haynes, Abby and Collin Haynes; 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law, James Krock, William and Marylin Krock and Robert and Bev Krock; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Tom Lash. Haynes Everett M, 81, of 728 Richmond St., died today from a heart attack at his residence. He was born in Kendallville Nov. 19, 1906, the son of Edward and Addie (Miller) Haynes. On April 21, 1944 in LaGrange, he married Mary Ann Bertsch. A lifetime resident, he was retired from McCray Refrigerator and Noble County Weights and Measures Dept. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Elks Lodge. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Schermerhorn of R. 1, Wawaka; a son, Michael of Muncie; a sister, Geraldine Hurni of Auburn; a brother, Gerald of Kendallville; and six grandchildren. Haynes G Heber, 81, R. 1, Garrett, died Friday. He was a retired farmer and lifetime resident of the area. His wife, Nellie, whom he married July 25, 1964, survives. Haynes Gerald E, 90, died Sunday in Shepherd of the Hill nursing home, Kendallville. He was born Sept. 1, 1903 in St. John to Edward and Addie (Miller) Haynes. On Feb. 17, 1934 in Garrett he married Helen John. He was Kendallville fire chief for more than 30 years and was employed as superintendent at McCray Refrigerator Co. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Kendallville Kiwanis, Kendallville Conservation Club and member of Lake View Cemetery board of directors. Surviving are his wife and a sister, Geraldine Hurni of Auburn. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett, and a sister, Vanetta. Funeral Wednesday in Hite Funeral Home. Haynes Helen Gladys, 75, died Sunday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born in Monroeville July 13, 1920 to Nelson A. and Emma M. (OBryant) Veit. On July 10, 1941 in Defiance, Ohio, she married Kennie Haynes. He died May 27, 1983. For 40 years she owned and operated Helen's Beauty Shop in Kendallville and for the past 15 years she worked at Betty's Salon of Beauty in Kendallville. She was a member of Wayne Center United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, William J. of Avilla; 2 sisters, Mabel Carunchia and Thelma Sobieski of Kendallville; 2 grandchildren, Tyler and Troy Haynes; and 2 great-grandchildren, Hilary and Nathan Haynes. Haynes Ida M, 85, a former Garrett resident, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Orel Miller, R. 3, Auburn, Monday. She was born July 3, 1886 near Avilla. She married the late William E. Haynes in Kendallville Dec. 25, 1902. He died in 1968. Also surviving are two sons, Arthur and Carl, both of Auburn; a sister, Mrs. Emma Sawyer of Kendallville; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Haynes Joy E, 50, died Thursday in her rural Garrett home. She was a member of the Cedar Lake Church of the Brethren in rural Auburn and the Indiana Nursing Association. She was born Feb. 7, 1939 in Walkerton, Ind. to Willard and Flossie (Knowlton) Stump. She married James M. Haynes on Aug. 11, 1963 in Walkerton. Surviving are her husband; her father in Garrett; two sons, Gary and Philip of Garrett; and two daughters, Linda of Chicago and Sharon of Garrett. One brother, Geroby, preceded her in death. Haynes Kennie, 68, R. 1, Kendallville, died Friday at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born November 11, 1914 in McKenzie, Tenn., the son of Joseph and Florence (Futrell) Haynes. He married Helen Veit July 18, 1941 in Defiance, Ohio. A resident of the area for 43 years, he was a retired auto mechanic and past operator of the Phillips 66 service station where he worked 14 years. Surviving are his wife; one son, William "Bill" of Avilla, one sister; Mrs. Roy (Bessie) Snow, Kendallville; three brothers, David N., Andrew and James, all Bruceton, Tenn.; and two grandsons, Tyler and Troy. Haynes Margaret C, 74, Auburn, died Sunday. She was born May 10, 1910 in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, the daughter of James and Maude (Graham) Latson. She married Carl Haynes Sept. 16, 1926 in Corunna. Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Bob (Marcile) Uhl, Avilla, Mrs. Donna Lou Reynolds, Auburn, and Mrs. Judy Kruse of Kent, Ohio; a sister, Mary Zegenfus, Auburn; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One daughter, Charlotte, and one sister, Wilma Wilson, preceded her in death. She was an employee of Auburn shoe stores until she retired in 1975. Haynes Mary Ann, 72, of Kendallville, died Sunday in McCray Hospital. Born in Kendallville May 18, 1916, she was the daughter of Phillip and Bertha (Hart) Bertsch. On April 21, 1944 in LaGrange, she married Everett M. Haynes, who died Dec. 23, 1987. A lifetime Kendallville resident, she retired from data processing at Flint & Walling Mfg. July 17, 1981. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Lutheran Home Auxiliary and Women of St. John. She married Earl Hays May 24, 1968 in Altus. Surviving are her husband; her parents in Altus, Okla.; a son, Heath of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Heather of Avilla; a granddaughter, Madison Biddle; 2 brothers, Randy Thacker of Laredo, Texas, and Leander Thacker of Altus; and one sister, Sherri Fancher of Altus. She was a bus driver for East Noble School Corp. on the Avilla route for 21 years. She was a member of the Avilla Fire Dept. Auxiliary. She lived in the community for 30 years. Services in Avilla. Hays Harriet, 87, died Wednesday at the Friendship Village Retirement Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born April 7, 1900 in Ligonier, the daughter of Sam and Bessie Hays. She graduated from Ligonier High School, attended Otterbein College and did graduate work at Ohio State University. She lived in Ohio most of her adult life. She retired as director of Food Service for city of Dayton, Ohio, schools. She is survived by two cousins, Eleanor Stage and Helen Simmons of Ligonier. Hays Ida, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Teal, pioneer residents of Noble County, was born in Ligonier Dec. 20, 1862 and died at the family home in Kimmell Feb. 8, 1925. She was a family of four children, of whom one sister and one brother, with the parents, have preceded her in death. She attended the Ligonier schools; and on Oct. 20, 1885 was married to Robert Hays. They had three children: Mrs. J. Herbert Cockley of Albion, Adolph of Chicago, and Athalie of Kimmell. Surviving are the husband and three children; two grandchildren; and one brother, Walter Teal of Indianapolis. She belonged to the Sunday School of Kimmell Methodist Church. Hays Jacob H, of Sparta Twp, died at his home March 1, 1882, at the age of nearly 70 years. He was born at Boonsboro, Md. July 18, 1812 where his early life was spent. When still a young man he left the place of his birth, crossed the mountains, and settled in Green County, Ohio. In Nov. 1834 he was married to Martha Woodward who is still living, by whom he had six children, 3 of whom are now living, the others having died before reaching manhood. In 1851 he settled in Noble County where he has since lived upon the farm where he died. 3-16-1882
Hays John W was born in Ohio Oct. 18, 1841. He attended he common and high schools of his native state and was engaged in teaching at the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1862 he enlisted in Company A, 110 Regiment, Ohio Infantry, and served with distinction to the close of the war, being mustered out with the rank of first sergeant. His company saw service in many of the hardest struggles of that great conflict, and part of the time he was in command of his company, notably in the campaign at and about Richmond. After the war he resumed teaching and while so engaged he married Laura E. Munger on June 23, 1872. They had five children, two dying in infancy. Surviving are the wife; two daughters, Edna and Olive; one son, Dr. Woodward; and two grandchildren. He attended the Miami Medical College of Cincinnati and was graduated in 1872, entering the practice of medicine in Albion, where he has served our people for fifty years. Recognizing his skill and diligence in surgery, the B&O Railroad Co. appointed him surgeon when the road was built through Noble County. This position of trust and responsibility he held down through the years at one time being president of the B&O Surgeon’s Association. For many years he served as secretary of the Noble County Board of Health and the Albion Town Board of Health. He was a Macabee, a Knight of Pythias, and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. An ardent Republican, he has served his party as county chairman. With his own hands he fashioned a goodly portion of the furniture in his home he and his wife established, and he built the first buggy he ever owned. He brought to Albion the first thermometer and the first hypodermic syringe. He died Jun 17, 1927. Funeral at the home Sunday. Burial, Albion Cemetery. + 6-?-1927

She died Feb. 24, 1992. He retired in 1989 as a core maker at Kendallville Foundry. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II. Hays Laura L (Munger) was born near Dayton, Ohio, Dec. 27, 1848. She died at her home in Albion July 13, 1929. As a young woman she attended Cooper Seminary for Girls, and after preparing herself, entered the teaching profession. While serving in this capacity she became acquainted with J. W. Hays, who at the time was also a teacher and to whom she was united in marriage June 23, 1870. Soon afterwards her husband entered upon the study of medicine and after the completion of his medical studies they moved to Albion where her husband practiced his profession and where they resided the remainder of their lives. She was the mother of five children, two of whom died in infancy. The three surviving are Mrs. Edna Hays Koposynski of Boston, Mass.; Miss Olive of Albion; and Dr. Woodward of Albion. + 7-?-1929
Hays Martha died Aug. 1, 1885 at her residence in Sparta Twp, of cancer of the tongue, aged 72 years and 24 days. She was born in Green County, Ohio, July 8, 1813 and was married to Jacob H. Hays in 1834. In 1865 they immigrated to Noble County settling upon the farm in Sparta Twp where she died. Funeral was at Sparta Church on Aug. 2, 1885. She was the mother of Dr. J. W. Hays Olive, 60, of Albion who spent practically her entire life in Noble County, died at Lakeside Hospital, Kendallville last Thursday following an operation for ulcers of the stomach. She was born in Noble County on July 23, 1876, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Hays of Albion. She received her elementary schooling here, and barring about two years at Boston, Mass., she spent her entire life in Noble County. One lone sister, Mrs. Edna Kapzynski of Boston, Mass., survives. Hays Robert, 89, for several years a resident of Kimmell, and manager of the Stiefel Grain Elevator, died at the Noble County Home last Tuesday. Death was due to pneumonia and infirmities of old age. Hays Woodward, 49, was found dead in his home April 20, 1930, by his sister, Olive. The coroner's verdict was that he had met an accidental death from an overdose of medicine. Miss Hays told the coroner that when she left the home Saturday night the doctor was lying on a davenport fully dressed. When she returned next morning he still lay as she had last seen him and had been dead several hours. He was born in Albion, July 29, 1880, a son of Dr. John W. Hays and wife, and had spent his life here. While in high school he worked in the drug store of M. C. Beck during his spare time. He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1906 and served two terms of internship in St. Joseph’s Hospital of Chicago, doing post-graduate work under the eminent Dr. Senn. After his father’s retirement he served as surgeon for the B&O Railroad and was appointed to serve on the medical examining board during the world war. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Albion Methodist Episcopal Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Leon Kopczynski, Boston, Mass., and Miss Olive at home; two children, John and Catherine Hays of Ann Arbor, Mich. Funeral at the home Wednesday. He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1960 and married Margaret Irene High on June 24, 1962, at South Milford. Margaret died September 13, 2009. He was the past owner of Kendallville Sanitation from 1969-1980. He also owned Hazelton’s Handy Work and Mowing Service since 1980 and was currently employed at Kautex Textron in Avilla since April 1996. He was a member of the South Milford United Methodist Church. Heche Donald Joe, 45, died in a hospital in New York City March 5. Heche Nathan Bradlee, 18, died June 4 when the car he was driving left the road and struck a tree. He was alone in the car and apparently fell asleep at the wheel. He was born in Cleveland and lived in Ocean City the past four years. After graduation he planned to attend Wheaton College in Illinois. Hecht Harold, 96, died Oct. 7, 2007 at Lutheran Villa Nursing Home in Mulberry. He had been a carpenter and was employed in the construction industry all of his life. He graduated in 1929 as the valedictorian at Salem Center High School in Steuben County. He was a U.S. Army WW II veteran, a member of the Army 745th Tank Battalion that landed at Omaha Beach and worked its way through the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church near Corunna. He was born near Helmer on June 30, 1911 to Edwin and Kathrine (Glasgow) Hecht. He married Lucille Hilda Hasselman on March 17, 1934 at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage. She died July 23, 2003. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Lynn and Ann Hecht of Bruceville, Ind.; 5 grandchildren, Dr. Aaron Hecht, Dr. Kimberly and Jeff McDonough, Kristine and Gerald Ripke, Kevin and Julie Ply and Andrew Hecht; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Heckman Charley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Heckman of Swan Center, was born at Avilla, May 29, 1881 and died March 28, 1925, age 43 years, 9 months and 28 days, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, after a short illness from the effects of the flu. He contracted a cold about a week ago and gradually grew worse. He consulted a doctor but did not get relief and finally was removed to the hospital. He is survived by his parents; four brothers, Tony, John Jr., William and Gust; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Brindle. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Ege Catholic Church. Heffner Leonard H, 88, of Hemet, Calif., was born in Noble County on Dec. 30, 1886 and married Ethel Beatty on June 8, 1910. They were the parents of five children, two preceding him in death. His first wife died in 1924. He later married Sybilla MacArthur of Chicago. He retired from postal service in Chicago and moved to Hemet, Calif. His wife passed away two years ago. To this union was born one daughter. Heffner Roma E, 91, of Ligonier, died April 9, 2010 at Avalon Village in Ligonier. She was born Sept. 4, 1918 in Ligonier to Milo and Dessie (Miller) Renner. Heffner Wilbur, of Ligonier man, died early today of injuries he suffered in a fall down the cellar stairs at his home. He opened the door to the cellar, thinking it was the door of another room. Hefty Everett J, 83, R. 1, Kendallville, died Friday in McCray Hospital. He was born Nov. 9, 1903 in Auburn to Fred and Bertha (Milton) Hefty. His first wife, Martha Wyatt, died in 1957. On July 27, 1957 he married Treva Alexander. He was a supervisor at Newnam Foundry for 44 years and was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Kendallville. Hefty Everett Jr, 71, Rome City businessman, died Thursday in Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born in Kendallville April 26, 1926 to Everett J. and Martha (Wyatt) Hefty. On Aug. 13, 1949 in Wolcottville he married Donna Sturgis. He had owned and operated Hefty's South Side Service Station for 31 years and Hefty Lake Mart 10 years. He was a WW II U. S. Army Air Force veteran and a member of F&AM Lodge, VFW Post 2749, OES 122, all in Kendallville, and Rome City Lions Club. He had served on the Rome City Plan Commission and BZA for many years. Heileman Christ, about 72, of Albion, died April 8, 1946 at McCray Hospital after being struck Saturday night on State Highway 8 at the east edge of Albion by a car driven by Carl Bowman of Albion. Blinded by lights of oncoming cars, Bowman failed to see Heileman, his wife, Ruth, and son Raymond 10, walking along the edge of the road. He was a native of Germany and came to this county 58 years ago. He had made his home in Kendallville until five years ago when he moved to Albion. Heinlen Robert A, 65, died Thursday in Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette. He was born Dec. 27, 1923 in Garrett to Jerome and Mary (Rhodine) Heinlen. He attended Garrett schools, then served in the U. S. Navy 1940-1943 and the Merchant Marines for 25 years. He was a member of VFW Post 1154 of Lafayette, Garrett American Legion Post and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Garrett. Heintzelman Charles W, 92, former resident of Larwill who lived in recent years in Columbia City, died Friday in Whitley County Hospital. He was born in June 1892 in Noble County, the son of Josiah and Emeline Hawk Heintzelman. The family moved to Whitley County in his early youth. He had been married 3 times. His first wife was Violet Noe, the second, Miriam Null, both of whom are deceased. His wife, the former Fern Stickler, survives. There is one son, Charles Jr. of Dunbar, W. Va.; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Elsie Ward of Columbia City, and Mrs. Leila Bartick of Mayfield Heights; one stepdaughter, Marjorie Gephart; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Heintzelman Esther, daughter of Justice and Esther Itt, was born in Elkhart Twp near the old Kansas School House March 2, 1854 and died at her home in Wawaka June 29, aged 75 years, 3 months and 27 days. In 1892 she married William Heintzelman. He died Dec. 9, 1925. She was of a family of eight children, seven girls and one boy. Mrs. Jacob Hawk of Toledo survives her. She was born and reared in the Methodist faith and had long been a member of the Wawaka M.E. Church where the funeral was held July 1. Heintzelman Joseph E, 84, died in flames that leveled his farm home southwest of Indian Village last Saturday. Cause of the fire has not been determined. He was alone in the house when the blaze started. His body was found in the ashes at the southeast corner of the burned-out structure shortly before midnight Saturday. His wife was visiting a daughter in Goshen at the time. A laborer, he was a lifetime resident of Noble County, born Oct. 1, 1878 the son of Josiah and Emeline Heintzelman. On Jan. 31, 1924, he was married to Anna Mae McDonald. He was a member of the Christian Chapel at Merriam. Heintzelman Joseph J, 77, of Ligonier, died January 3, 2014, in Kendallville. He was born October 28, 1936 in Indian Village to Joseph and Mae Heintzelman. He married Rosalie Stanger in Ligonier in 1957. Shedied in May of 1991. He is survived by 2 sons, Rick (Lisa) Heintzelman of Ligonier, and Jim W. Heintzelman Lawrence E, 88, died Friday in Goshen General Hospital. He was born April 10, 1910 in Noble County to John and Rosa (Friend) Heintzelman. He married Alexine Hursey on June 4, 1932. She died in 1963. He married Roxena Goss in 1965. She died in 1993. On Feb. 23, 1994 he married Lucille Ray. He owned and operated Heintzelman Grocery Store in Cromwell from 1935 to 1975. He was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel, Cromwell Masonic Lodge 705, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, Mizpah Temple Shrine and Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club. He was one of the original founders of Cromwell State Bank and the last original board member living. He is survived by his wife; a son, Roger of Cromwell; a daughter, Suellen Beers of Cromwell; 2 stepdaughters; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Heintzelman Rodney, 16, died at Goshen Hospital. He and another boy were experimenting with potassium perchlorate in the Heintzelman basement. The concoction had been put in a copper test tube and he struck the tube with a hammer, setting off an explosion which ruptured a main artery in his neck. He was rushed to the hospital by his parents but was dead on arrival. A junior at West Noble High School, he was born May 18, 1957 in Goshen to Roger and Charlene (Horn) Heintzelman, who operate the grocery in Cromwell. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Surviving are the parents; two brothers, James and Jeffrey at home; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Heintzelman, Cromwell. Heintzelman Roxena B, 75, died Friday in Goshen Hospital. She was born April 18, 1917 in Warsaw to Charles and Susan (Cook) Wagner. In 1940 she married Jack E. Goss. He died Dec. 13, 1956. On Feb. 3, 1965 she married Lawrence E. Heintzelman. A Ligonier High School graduate, she was co-owner of Goss Grocery at Big Lake until 1977 when she sold her interest to her son, Thomas. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Ligonier OES. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Thomas Goss of Columbia City and Mark Goss of Middlebury; 2 stepchildren; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She came from Ohio to Indiana in the spring of 1863. She was here married first to Clark Allman and was the mother of four children, all but one of whom and her first husband preceded her in death. Heintzelman Violet I, 30y10d, daughter of Jeremiah E. and Martha M. (Reed) Noe, was born near Kimmell August 4, 1888 and passed away at her home in Laud, Aug. 14, 1918. She graduated from Albion High School in 1908 and was one of the most successful teachers in Noble County until her marriage. She ws identified with the Sparta Christian Church. She married Charles Heintzelman in Albion on Feb. 27, 1913. Two daughters were given to this union, Elsie Margaret and Leial Madia. They located in Laud Aug. 1917. He married Dollie Hooks in Fort Wayne on Jan. 2, 1950. She died in 2006. He worked for Heiny's Grocery and at Nicholas Bakeries and retired from Lincoln Mfg in 1982. Heinzerling Pluma M, 98, died August 4 in Betz Nursing Home in Auburn. She was born May 19, 1885 in Avilla, the daughter of John and Emma (Strouse) Conley. She married Carl H. Heinzerling in May 1907 in Garrett. He died January 26, 1950. Surviving are a son, Harry of Garrett; six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in Heinzerling’s Hardware in Garrett. Heitz Sabina (Ober), wife of Joseph Heitz, died at the home four miles south of Garrett Monday from pneumonia and heart trouble. She was born in Bedford County, Pa. Oct. 29, 1861 but had been a resident of Butler Twp, DeKalb County for three score years. She and Mrs. Heitz were married thirty-nine years ago. Surviving are the husband; four children, Mrs. Francis E. Heller Martin A, 88, Avilla, died October 30, 2003 at Provena Sacred Heart Home. He was born November 5, 1914 in Oxford, Neb., the son of Otto and Charlotte (Ziebell) Heller. On December 18, 1934 in Beaver City, Neb., he married Marie Askey. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Billie and Richard Gienger of Avilla, Linda and Larry Thiele of New Haven, and Annette Anglin of Kendallville; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Jean of LaGrange, and Lloyd of Fort Wayne; one brother, Robert, of Pleasant Lake; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Leoa Purk and Ella Maaske; and 4 brothers, Walter, Lawrence, Lewis and Ludean. He retired in 1987 from Burtzner and Wilhelm Sand & Gravel. He had lived in Avilla 58 years, coming from California. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where services were held. Heller Walter C, 66, was born in Nebraska and lived in Helmer 25 years. He married Berniece Milleman Dec. 26, 1959. She survives. He operated the Heller Service Station in Helmer and was a retired employee of Sealed Power Corp., LaGrange. He was a member of Helmer United Methodist Church. He died Saturday at McCray Hospital. Helman Matilda was born in Wayne County, Ohio March 19, 1820. She united with the M. E. Church at the age of 16. She was married to Robert P. Helman Feb. 18, 1840, living with him until his death in 1872. They came to Noble County in 1854, removed to Wisconsin in 1860 overland by teams, but in consequence of the cholera which was raging through that country, they were compelled to return to this place. She was the mother of 8 children, 3 of whom are now living, Harmon L. of our place, Doran P. and Gordon who reside in the west. ^ 8-31-1882
Helmer Beulah I, 91, former Kendallville resident, died Tuesday in McCray Hospital from complications from diabetes. Born May 18, 1897 in Swan, she was the daughter of Francis A. and Carrie F. (Cramer) Lobdell. On Nov. 30, 1932, she married Lawrence Helmer, who preceded her in death. She moved to Kendallville in 1932 from Swan and was a clerk many years in a dry goods store in Auburn. She also worked at the Kendallville Nutrition Site. Surviving are a stepson, Wilbur Helmer, Kendallville; a niece, Florence Dominy, Fort Wayne; and many other nieces and nephews. Helmer C Robert, 84, died Feb. 5, 2004 at the Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, Fla. He was born in Kendallville on May 7, 1919 to Cyrus and Elizabeth (Baughman) Helmer. He married Mary Donley on Aug. 2, 1941 in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He studied at George Washington University and Montgomery College and worked as a cartographer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters; Mary Titus of Swathmore, Pa., and Kay Spears of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Pontius of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Heather Spears, and a great-grandson, David Houser. Helmer John, a resident of Auburn for 29 years, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Davis of 715 Dowling St., Kendallville. His death was attributed to arterial sclerosis. Services were at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Avilla. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery. He was born near Avilla Sept. 8, 1864. For 29 years, he resided with his wife, the former Frances Borck on S. Indiana Ave. in Auburn. The couple was married 65 years last Oct. 14. He was employed for many years on the Fort Wayne & Northwestern Railway interurban lines and the Vandalia Railroad as a section worker. She worked as a waitress at the St James Restaurant for 10 years. After retiring in 1958, he worked at Sacred Heart Home until 1973. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Catholic Knights of Ohio, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was born April 14, 1931 in Avilla to Charles J. and Mary (Demske) Helmer. On July 10, 1954 at St. Mary's Church she married Richard Helmkamp, who survives. Helmkamp Hilda C, 85, R. 2, Avilla, died July 29 at Sacred Heart Home. She was born July 24, 1901 in Glandorf, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Westbeld) Kolhoff. She married Ben Helmkamp in Glandorf June 22, 1922. He died Sept. 13, 1975. She had been a resident of the Avilla area since 1940, moving here from Glandorf. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. Helmkamp James J, 73, of Auburn, died July 10, 2010 at his residence. He was born Feb. 17, 1937 to Bernard and Hilda Helmkamp in Putnam County, Ohio. He graduated from Avilla High School in 1955 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958. On Aug. 27, 1960 he married Ann Marti. He worked at Newnam and Lane foundries and on Oct. 1, 1984 his family purchased the Chrysler dealership in Auburn. He operated the agency until retirement in 2001. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Auburn, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 202 in Butler, Auburn Lions Club, Kendallville and Auburn Elks and Moose lodges. She married Robert J. Helmkamp on Nov. 29, 1974. He died in 1996. She retired in 1989 as a nurse's aide from Provena Sacred Heart Home and then worked at Snyder Distribution North until 3 years ago. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Helmuth Adolph Charles, 75, resident of Kendallville for 66 years, died last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. H. Clay, 320 N. State St. due to thrombosis. He was born March 23, 1863 at Auburn, the son of the late Harmon and Ernestine Helmuth. At the age of 4 years he accompanied his parents to Chicago, the family living there at the time of the Chicago fire. In 1872 they located in Garrett and a year later moved to Kendallville. At that time he was 9 years of age. On July 1, 1888 he married Dora Lieberenz. They had one daughter. His wife died Dec. 18, 1916 and since that time he had resided with his daughter. He had been affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church for fifty years, was a member of Kendallville Lodge No. 109 Knights of Pythias and Ben Hur Court No. 20. For many years he was employed in the paint shop of Flint & Walling Mfg. Co., retiring 12 years ago following an attack of influenza. Helmuth Dora, wife of Adolph C. Helmuth, died Monday at her home, 322 N. State St. from spinal sclerosis. Dora Lieberenz-Helmuth was born in Prussia, Aug. 8, 1866 and came with her parents to the United States in 1872, locating in LaGrange County. She spent her girlhood days in the farm home, and at the age of 22 years married Adolph C. Helmuth of Kendallville on July 1, 1888. She had made Kendallville her residence ever since. Born in Ohio, she had lived in this community most of her life. She was a member of the Albion Methodist Church. She and her husband lived in Albion and community until a year or so ago when they moved to Avilla where he had work on the B&O Railroad. Heltzel Elias, 84, resident of Albion for many years, died Wednesday at the county jail where he had been incarcerated pending his commitment to the state hospital for treatment. He had been a resident of Noble County 70 years, coming here from Ohio, where he was born, with his parents when he was 14 years of age. He first located in York Twp and then came to Albion some years ago. He was formerly street commissioner and for a number of years carried mail from the post office to the depot. He was a familiar figure on the streets, driving a covered wagon with a team of western ponies. He is survived by the widow, Nancy; a daughter, Mrs. George Stienbarger; and 2 sons, John of Albion and Edward of Middlebury by a previous marriage; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. , widow of Henry Heltzel, former recorder of Noble County, was in attendance at the Old Settlers’ Meeting on Saturday last. She removed from Virginia in 1834 with her first husband, Adam Hull and 6 children and settled first in Allen County. She was the mother of 9 children before the death of her first husband and marriage with Mr. Heltzel. Her grandchildren numbered 73, of whom more than 50 are yet living. She has 16 granddaughters and 9 grandsons who are married and 34 great-grandchildren, the eldest of whom is 16 years of age. One of her daughters, the wife of Isaac Tibbott, was married to Mr. Tibbott in Eel River Twp and they are supposed to be the first pair wedded in that township. He was a member of the Rome City American Legion Post 381. He was born Jan. 10, 1945 in Kendallville to Floyd and Vivian (Fockler) Heltzel. On May 4, 1968 in San Francisco, Calif., he maried JoAnn LaConte. She married Elias F. Heltzel Jan. 7, 1872. They had three boys and four girls, Mary Ellen, Ida May, Minnie Elmira, (twins) and William David have preceded their mother in death. Heltzel Jacob was born in Stark County, Ohio on Oct. 17, 1854. As a child he went with his family to Michigan where he resided until he grew to young manhood when he came to Indiana and married Susan Bender. They had 5 children - Clarence, David and Mae with the mother having died. Two sons survive, Jesse and George, both of Kendallville. There are 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren surviving also. In 1905 he married Mrs. Mary Binkley, who with two stepdaughters, Mrs. Grace Prickett and Mrs. Bertha Fogel, remain also. In Dec. 1934 he met with an accident from which he never recovered, having to remain in bed. On Nov. 17 he died, being 83 years and 1 month of age. He engaged in farming near Albion for many years. Heltzel Jefferson, son of Christian and Catherine (Vance) Heltzel, was born in Noble County July 10, 1861, died at his country home near Albion Oct. 21, 1935, aged 74 years, three months and one day. He married Belle Palmer in 1892. They had ten children. Five of them preceded their father in death. Those remaining are Glenn of Mishawaka, Lera Wirick of Albion, Gladys Grear of Ossian, Dean and Caroline at home. He was for a number of years a member of the IOOF. He always made his home in Noble County. Heltzel Myrick, son of George and Sylvia Heltzel, was born in Noble County Aug. 1, 1871. He died March 30, 1939 at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 29 days. On March 3, 1898 he married Viola Clara Smith. She died April 19, 1927. They had two children, one son, Orville L. of Elkhart; and one daughter, Mrs. Orval Coe of Albion. He leaves 2 children; nine grandchildren; his mother of near Albion; three brothers, Tilden of Larwill, Charlie of near Albion, Milton of Mongo; and two sisters, Mrs. Dan Musser of Ligonier, and Mrs. John Crothers of Kendallville. His father died in July 1927. He was the oldest of a family of six children and the first of them to died. He was a member of the Old Pleasant Hill Christian Church, located about seven miles northwest of Albion. He has been a lifelong resident of Noble County, excepting for a period of two or three years. In his early boyhood his parents moved to the state of Ohio. She was born March 1, 1850 to Joseph and Sylvia Roe, who came in an early day to Noble County, where she grew to womanhood. On Aug. 14, 1870 she was married to George W. Heltzel, with whom she lived until his death 12 years ago. They had four sons and two daughters. One son, Myrick, died in March 1939. Surviving are three sons, Charles of York Twp, Tilden of Larwill, and Milton of LaGrange; two daughters, Mrs. John Crothers of Kendallville, and Mrs. Dan Musser of Ligonier; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Helvey Franzel "Jack", 82, R. 2, Avilla, died Aug. 16 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Garrett. He was born in North Manchester April 5, 1902, the son of Clarence and Cora (Metzger) Helvey. He married Mildred Hill Aug. 2, 1952. He moved from Warsaw to Avilla 32 years ago and ran a lawn mower shop north of Avilla. He was a member of the Manchester Masonic Lodge. Hemer Daniel died at his home on Freeman St. Sunday from stomach trouble. He was born in Germany 64 years ago and came to this country with Julius Lang when 17 years old. He settled in New York City where he learned the shoemaker’s trade and on the breaking out of the war enlisted in Co. C., 45th New York Volunteer Infantry and later joined the 58th New York Volunteers. Soon after the war he came to this city where he has been employed ever since in the Lang Shoe Store until obliged by poor health to give up work about 3 years ago. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Henry and Charles of this city; and 4 daughters, Mrs. William Wagner, Mrs. Clara Coffel, and the Misses Tena and Dora, all of this city. Hemminger Annie D, 75, of 114 Drake Road, died Monday in McCray Hospital. She was born in Branch County, Mich., June 10, 1907 to James Henry and P. Kathern (Winans) Cash. On Feb. 27, 1943 in Fort Wayne she married Robert D. Hemminger. She moved here 60 years ago from Michigan and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. She had been employed by Kraft Foods, Kendallville Laundry, Palace of Sweets, Skiles Ice Cream Parlor and Murphys. Her husband is the only immediate survivor. She received local, state and national awards for her quilts. Henderson Addie - Mrs. Leo Delucenay received word that her mother, Mrs. Addie Henderson, 76, died Monday at Sequim, Wash., where she had made her home for the past several years. Henderson Arthur was born in Massachusetts May 4, 1871. When a child he and his 2 brothers were left without father or mother. A little later the family was scattered. One brother was sent east and the other two, Harry and Arthur, were sent to Indiana where they grew to manhood near Kendallville. Henderson Edward Charles, son of Charles and Mary Henderson, was born in Albion, April 22, 1863, and died at his home in Webster County, Nebraska Nov. 10, 1933 at the age of 70 years, six months and 18 days. He married Amelia VanDyke Feb. 21, 1888. They had two sons and three daughters. His companion died Feb. 14, 1889. When a young man he united with the Methodist Church and later while living in Missouri he placed his membership in the Methodist Church there. The five children are Mrs. Ethel Jagger of Minneapolis, Kans., Mrs. Twila Tuckle of Miltonvale, Kans., Harry of Red Cloud, Neb., Ross and Hazel on the farm where they cared for their father in the last years of his life. Henderson Harry L was born in New Brunswick Canada in 1867 and died in Michigan City, Ind. Dec. 6, at the age of 38. Funeral was at the Christian Church. Burial, Lake View Cemetery beside his brother. He enlisted as a private in the 27th Indiana Battery A in the Spanish-American War. In Jan. 1901 he married Bessie Royce of Michigan City. Two daughters, Margaret and Helen were born, who with the wife, survive. There is living also one brother, Frank. Another brother, Arthur, died about 2 1/4 years ago and is buried here in Kendallville. In March 1899 he was appointed chaplain of the Indiana State Prison. Hendricks Roy D, 84, of Albion, died Jan. 13, 2011 at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. He was born on June 25, 1926, in Paxton, Ill., to Jacob G. and Delia M. (Harriett) Hendricks. On December 13, 1952, in Waynedale he married Maxine Guenther. She died October 6, 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a truck driver for many years, driving for Dexter Axle in Albion and for Flint & Walling in Kendallville. He also retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of the Albion Fire Department, Albion Eagles Lodge FOE 2455 and Albion American Legion Post 246. Henline Charles, 76, died Dec. 14, 1945 at his home on the Patrick Mangan farm in Noble Twp, where he had lived for many years. The Mangans found him ill at 9:30 and called a doctor but his death occurred before the arrival of the doctor. The coroner pronounced death due to valvular heart disease. She worked in the offices of McCray Refrigeration and Litton Industries of Kendallville and was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist and Noble Chapter OES. She was a 1927 graduate of Kendallville High School. She was born Oct. 22, 1909 to Lake and Maude (Wilson) Kizer in Edgerton, Ohio. She married Gordon T. Henney on Nov. 21, 1943. He died May 24, 2002. Henney Earl C, 83, Brimfield, died Sunday (d. 7-30-1978) in Fort Wayne Health Center. Born Dec. 1, 1894 in Noble County, he was the son of Justin and Ina (Dillon) Henney. Henney Floyd T was born February 8, 1881at Ionia, Mich. and died December 5, 1949 at his farm home west of Avilla at the age of 68. He was the son of Jeriel and Lucetta Hines Henney. The family came to reside in Avilla in 1900 where the father and sons engaged in the livery business. He was married to Lottie Ramsten December 24, 1905. The had two sons, Robert R. and Harry H. He moved to his present location thirty-five years ago and engaged in farming and stock raising. He is survived by the widow; two sons, Robert R., of Jonesville, Michigan and Harry H. of Woodburn; two granddaughters; and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Stephenson, South Bend, Mrs. Ella Fulks, Avilla, and Mrs. Lesta Neal of Albion. She had resided in Noble County the greater part of her life and was known in the Avilla and Albion communities. Henney Lucetta Jane, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hines, was born in Richland County, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1850, and at her home near Avilla, March 24, 1925, aged 75 years, 2 months and 12 days. She was one of a family of seven children and grew up near Albion, the family moving to this county in 1861 when she was eleven years of age. She was united with the Rehoboth Lutheran Church when she was seventeen years of age and held to the Lutheran faith throughout her life. On Oct. 11, 1868 she married Jeriel H. Henney and they had eight children, Justin, Clyde, Floyd, Mrs. Bertha Stephenson, Mrs. Ella Fulks, of Avilla, Forrest of Cromwell, Merle of Ligonier, Mrs. Lesta Neal of Albion. In 1900 the family located in Avilla and have resided here since that time. She leaves the husband, the children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and also two sisters, Mrs. George Black and Mrs. Albert Singrey, and two brothers, Melvin and Wilbert Hines, all of Albion. ~ 4-2-1925

Henoch Sol died March 12, 1951 in Los Angeles, Calif., where he and Mrs. Henoch had made their home since leaving Ligonier several years ago. Death was due to pneumonia. He was born in LaPorte 78 years ago and came to Ligonier in 1895 being employed by the Straus Brothers Co. as a stenographer. He was later employed as bookkeeper and office manager of the Ligonier Carriage Co. When the Ligonier Refrigerator Co. was formed, he became one of the principle stockholders and was largely responsible for the success of that company. He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge and was one of the men responsible for the organization of the lodge in Ligonier. He was a former mayor of Ligonier. He is survived by his widow, Malvene. Funeral in Los Angeles and the body taken to Nashville, Tenn., where burial was made in the Jewish cemetery in that city. + 3-?-1951

Henry Anna Elizabeth (Schmenk), the wife of Emanuel Henry, living two miles north of town, died Tuesday night. She was born in Glandorf, Putnam County, Ohio, April 7, 1869. In 1877 she came with her family to this township where she resided until her death. Less than a year ago she married Emanuel Henry. Henry Caroline E, daughter of William and Martha Hunter, was born the 9th day of Sept., 1836, near Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, Ohio; died the 26th of Jan. 1916, aged 79 years, four months and 17 days. The family moved to W. Va. when she was a small child, where she was married to John Wesley Henry, Oct. 3, 1855. They had eleven children. In the spring of 1865 she with her husband moved to Indiana and settled on a farm just east of Avilla where they resided until a few years prior to the death of Mr. Henry (which occurred April 18, 1913) when they retired from the farm and moved to Avilla. Four children survive; Mrs. Frank Bixler of Kendallville, Emanuel Monroe Henry of this place, John Wesley Jr., and Isaac Newton Henry of Kendallville. There are 25 grandchildren. He is a graduate of Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked for Noble County Co-Op in Albion for 13 years and then worked for 20 years at Copperfield in Avilla until 2008. He was a member of the Kendallville VFW Post 2749. Henry Perma was born on the 25th day of June, 1884. Seven weeks ago she was taken with diphtheria. She died Monday at an age of 4 years, 7 months, 3 days. The funeral was at the M.E. Church yesterday. ~ 1-31-1889 ^ 2-1-1889
Henry Ralph C, the five-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Henry of Fort Wayne, died last Sunday. Avilla relatives attended the funeral on Tuesday. ~ 5-25-1893
Henry Richrd A, 68, of Rome City, died August 29, 2013.  He retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years. He served during the Vietnam era. He was a member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749 and DAV Post 19 in Elkhart. He was born June 15, 1945, in Kendallville to Carney I. and Alma F. Henry. Surviving are a daughter Marissa (Jim) O’Sullivan of Woodway, Texas; 2 sons, Anthony “Tony” Henry of Big Pine Key, Florida, and William “Bill” Henry of Kendallville; 8 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Henry Robert dropped dead from heart disease last Thursday. He had been farming the Bender place and on his way home for dinner fell from his wagon lifeless beside the road. He was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, March 9, 1840. At the age of 7 years he moved with his parents to Wood County, W. Va., where he resided until 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. I., 11th Regiment, West Virginia Volunteers. After the terrific battle of Gettysburg, Companies A and E were consolidated and Mr. Henry was promoted to the rank of sergeant which he held until the close of the war. He received an honorable discharge July 3, 1865. A few weeks later he came with his parents to Indiana, settling upon the farm where he resided until his death, August 11, 1898, aged 58 years, 5 months, 2 days. He married Cornelia Roginson, who, with one son and three daughters, survive. He has three brothers and three sisters living. He was a member of Nelson Post, G.A.R. and Avilla Lodge No. 460 F & AM. Henry Sophia, widow of the late G. S. Henry, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. C. Shambaugh, on Main St. Tuesday, aged 81 years, three months and one day. A hemorrhage caused death. She is survived by the following sons and daughters, J. M., Fort Wayne, J. L., Ligonier, Robert, Kendallville, Mrs. Shambaugh, Avilla, Mrs. H. E. Gettle, Garrett, and Mrs. H. L. Askew, Fort Wayne. Funeral will be Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church. She was born in Wood County, W. Va., Aug. 4, 1831 and died at Avilla Nov. 5, 1912, aged 81 years, three months and one day. Her parents were born in Edinburgh, Scotland and resided there until after their marriage. Of Scotch parentage, her maiden name was McKenzie. She married Gabriel S. Henry, who preceded her in death by ten years. She was the youngest of nine children and the last to die. She and her husband came to Indiana in the fall of 1865, settling upon a farm one and a half miles east of Avilla, and in 1882 they moved to Avilla. They had eight children, two of whom preceded her in death. She was raised a Presbyterian, changing later to the Baptist Church, then in 1865 when she and her husband came to Noble County, they united with the Protestant Methodist Church. Henry Vesta F, 94, died Monday in Kendallville Manor HealthCare Center. She was born in Kendallville Jan. 2, 1904 to Isaac and Sylvia (Gloyd) Henry. She was a bookkeeper for Byer Brothers Wholesale Grocers for 50 years and a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 86 Auxiliary, Kendallville BPW Club, Noble 122 OES and McCray Hospital Auxiliary. Surviving are a sister, Helen Palmer of Kendallville and Kalispell, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and 4 brothers. Funeral Thursday in Hite Funeral Home. Henry Wendel, Loren, Bryant and Kaylee: Melissa (Newman) Henry, a 1977 East Noble High School graduate, lost her husband Wendel, son Bryant, daughter Loren, and granddaughter, Kaylee in a crash on Interstate 55 outside of Jackson, Miss. at 3:30 a.m. Thursday. She is the daughter of Max and June Newman of rural Kendallville and the sister of Vickie Tuffley of Kendallville, Judy Huesner of Fort Wayne and Max Newman Jr. of rural Kendallville. Wendel C. Henry, 46, Loren Renee, 18, Bryant, 16, and Kaylee, 3, all of Patterson, La., died after their vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler, according to Yazoo County Coroner, Ricky Shivers. The family was en route to the New Orleans airport after visiting family out of state. The mother, Melissa Henry, had flown in order to spend more time with her out-of-state family members. The Henry family who drove had pulled off I-55 in Yazoo County after hitting a deer. When they pulled back on the highway they collided with the 18-wheeler. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Melissa Henry is a sixth-grade teacher. Services were Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Patterson, La., where Bryant was preparing to be confirmed. Wendel and Bryant planned to go on a church mission trip to Mexico together this spring. ^ 1-3-2006
Henry William Frank was engaged at work on the spire of the new St. Mary’s Church at Fort Wayne as a carpenter. He and his foreman were descending on the inside of the tower, and in some manner Frank lost his balance and fell to the floor, a distance of one hundred and thirty feet. The terrible fall fractured his skull in three places. He was removed to the hospital at once and medical aid summoned. Notwithstanding the extent of his injuries he remained conscious until almost the last. Everything possible was done for him by kind hands, but in vain. Divine Providence willed otherwise and on Friday, he died. He was born in Noble County, November 7, 1868; died in the city of Fort Wayne, August 5, 1887, aged 18 years, 8 months and 28 days. * 1887
Hensinger Larry O, 29, Garrett, died in an industrial accident of cyanide poisoning at Bastian Plating, Auburn, June 28. He was born March 12, 1959 in Santa Ana, Calif. to Robert G. and Roberta (Eakle) Hensinger. He was a U. S. Army veteran, member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Auburn, and Sons of the American Legion. Surviving are his parents,; three brothers (three brothers not named), which includes David Denes of Garrett, Susan Geiger, Huntertown and Denice Burniston, Garrett. Hensley Uffie E, 84, of Cromwell, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Goshen Hospital. She attended Cromwell United Methodist Church. She was born Feb. 2, 1922 in Monticello, Ky. to Elish and Becky (Spradlin) Watson. She married Virgil M. Hensley. He died in 1976. Surviving are 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Ralph of Mt. Vernon, Ky., and Doyle and Gwen of Cromwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Bob Ott of Cromwell; 4 sisters, Lula King of Port Charlotte, Fla., Emmie Peck of Niceville, Fla., Wanda Martsoft of North Webster and Eva Sharp of Monticello, Ky.; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Gates; 3 brothers, Clifford, Jody and Reese; 4 sisters, Connie, Artie, Voldi and Lucy; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Hensley Virgil, 64, R. 1, died Thursday in Goshen General Hospital. He was retired from Sprunger Brothers in Ligonier and had moved here 20 years ago from Dayton, Ohio. Born Sept. 20, 1911 in Moodysville, Tenn. to Palo and Mattie (Little) Hensley, he married Uffie E. Spradlin Aug. 13, 1938 in Tenn. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Doris K. Wilson, Ligonier, and Mrs. Lois Mabee, Merriam; two sons, Ralph D., Ohio, and Glen D., Cromwell; two brothers, Elmer and Willis of Birdstown, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren. Henson Nicholas Adam, 22, died Oct. 18, 2004 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne from injuries he sustained in a van-train accident Sunday in Ligonier. He was a machinist. He was born April 28, 1982 in Kendallville. His father, Jeffrey Henson, survives in Cromwell; his mother and stepfather, Sharon and Steve Warstler in Butler; a brother Nathan in Albion; a half-sister, Kimbre Siebert in Kendallville; a stepbrother; and grandparents, Mary and Bill Stump of Sebring, Fla. Henson Oscar T, 79, 500 Water St., died Saturday in McCray Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1908 in Ligon, Ky., the son of F. D. and Martha (Cole) Henson. On Feb. 17, 1950 in Paintsville, Ky., he married Rose M. Hatton. He moved to Noble County from South Bend in 1950. He had been a coal miner and construction worker for Roy Munsford Co. in South Bend before his retirement. He attended Salem Community Baptist Church in Ligonier. Surviving are his wife; three sons, James of Ligon, Ky., Ronald of Columbus, Ohio, and Jeffrey of Ligonier; a sister, Rosie Newsom of Sawyersville, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Henson Rose M, 86, died Jan. 12, 2000 in Ligonier. She was born Aug. 29, 1913 in Caney, Ky., to Ben and Victoria (Blair) Hatton. On Feb. 17, 1950 she married Oscar Henson in Paintsville, Ky. He died April 2, 1988. She had been employed at Ligonier Rubber Co. and attended Salem Community Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Jeffrey of Cromwell; a stepson; 2 grandsons and a granddaughter. Henton Carolyn died May 26 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born near Kendallville June 8, 1912, she was the daughter of F. M. and Mae (Adams) Aungst. Survivors are a daughter, Chris Kuehn; and a granddaughter, Claire Kuehn, both of Corpus Christi; a brother, Robert of Addison, Mich.; a sister, Sarah Parker of Albion. Hentzell Millard P, 86, formerly of Syracuse, died Oct. 21 at the Americana Nursing Home in Wabash. He was born in Cromwell Nov. 1, 1889, a son of Benjamin F. and Sarah (Lantz) Hentzell. He was a machinist and draftsman and lived in Syracuse for many years prior to his illness. A veteran of WW I, he was a member of the American Legion. Surviving are a sister, Marie McFarren, New Paris; a brother, Charles, Milwaukee, Wis. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral Saturday at Harris Funeral Home, Syracuse.
