Groh Frank A, of Rome City, died April 6 while at work at Brimfield. Surviving are two sons, Lewis in North Africa, and Paul near Kendallville; six daughters, Mrs. Beulah Cramer and Mrs. Clara Pomeroy of Mishawaka, Mrs. Ruth Brown of San Francisco, Mrs. Phyllis Herman of Coldwater, Mich., Mrs. Helen Lock of Albion, and Mrs. Esther Wilson, R. 1, Pleasant Lake. Groh Gertrude L, 54, R. 3, died Sunday at her home. A native of Kendallville, she was born Nov. 29, 1920, the daughter of William A. and Mabel Craven. She and Lewis Groh were married June 15, 1940. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Noble County Historical Society, Noble County Heart Fund and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband; her mother; a daughter, Kae Ellen, Kendallville; a son, Robert, Kendallville; two stepdaughters, Faye Glass and Mae Duncan, Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A sister, Marjorie Sibert, preceded her in death. Funeral Wednesday in Hite Funeral Home. Burial, Lake View Cemetery. + 10-?-1975
Groh Harold, Mishawaka died due to cancer. A former employee of Wheelbrator Corp., he had resided for many years in Mishawaka. Survivors are his widow, the former Doris Hull of Cromwell; two sons, Donne and Mike, Mishawaka; 2 sisters; and 5 grandchildren. Groh Lewis E, 93, formerly of Wolcottville, died Dec. 23, 2003 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Tampa, Fla. He was born Aug. 22, 1910, the son of Frank Allen and Elizabeth (Zonker) Groh. Retired, he was the founder and owner of Lewger Machine & Tool in Kendallville. He was one of 4 soldiers who played "Taps" at the dedication of the World War Memorial building in Indianapolis on July 4, 1927. He was a crew chief in Casablanca during WW II, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a member of All Saints Church in Fla. Surviving are a daughter, Lena Glass, Sun City, Ariz.; a son, Robert of Goshen; a sister, Phyllis Herman, Coldwater, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Groh Maurice S, 70, died in his home here Thursday of a heart ailment. He and his wife operated a photograph gallery here a number of years. He was prominent in Ben Hur circles and active in the local Methodist Protestant Church. Groh Paul A, 64, 603 S. Main St., retired 20-year operator of Groh’s Standard Service Station at Drake Road and Main St., died Friday in Parkview Hospital. A lifetime Kendallville area resident, he was born Sept. 10, 1920 to Frank and Mary Elizabeth (Zonker) Groh. He married Maggie Handshoe June 14, 1964 in Lisbon. He was a member of Beacon Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Judy Brielmaier of South Bend, Vicki and Jackie at home; a son, Jerry of Defiance, Ohio; five sisters, Phyllis Herman of Coldwater, Mich., Esther Clarke of Fremont, Beulah Cramer of Mishawaka, Ruth Brown of Lucerne, Calif., and Clara Nichols of Elkhart; one brother, Lewis of South Milford; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Groh Ruth, 85, Kendallville, died Friday at McCray Hospital. She was born Sept. 28, 1900 in Delaware County to George and Eva (Bennet) Drumm. She married Cleo Groh in 1920 in Muncie. He preceded her in death. She had lived in Kendallville since 1921 and was a member of the Mitchell Street Methodist Church and the Noble County Demonstration Club. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Russell (Mary Frances) Harden, Kendallville; one son, Lawrence, in Italy; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Groh Sheldon, 44, former Avilla area resident, died Tuesday in McCray. A co-owner of the Hayden Welding Co. in Kendallville, he was born Oct. 9, 1921, the son of Cleo and Ruth Drumm Groh. Surviving are the parents, his wife, the former Norma Jean Schlotterback; three daughters, Mariam, Jennifer, at home, and Christine, a student at San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Lawrence of Seattle, Wash.; and a sister, Mrs. Russell Hayden, Kendallville. Groh Valentine was a native of Hesse Darmstadt on the Rhine, Germany, where he was born Feb. 2, 1800. He with his wife came to America in 1855, remaining in New York City a few months. With some of his children he then came to Indiana, locating in LaGrange County. He was a farmer. His wife died a number of years ago. For the last 16 years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Louis Liebing, now residing near South Milford. A few months ago he went to stay with another daughter, Mrs. Anthony Hassinger near Wright’s corners, where he died Oct. 31 at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 29 days. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. His funeral was at Wright’s Corners Evangelical Church on Nov. 4. Two of his daughters came from New York to attend the funeral. Of his family, there survive one son, 5 daughters, 38 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. ^ 11-9-1888
Groh William, 37, died at his residence in this city Feb. 11. He was born in Germany but emigrated to this country at the age of 14 or 15 years and worked in a machine shop in the city of New York. He came to LaGrange County with his parents in 1859 and soon after commenced clerking in the grocery for Peter Ringle in this city. In 1861 he enlisted in the 44th Reg. Ind. Vol., but being severely wounded, he returned home after serving about 7 months. He eventually started a business on his own. At one time he was probably the largest advertiser in the state and his likeness adorned quite a number of newspapers. During his prosperous days he built a large store room 165 feet in length, and a nice brick residence, putting all his capital and more into buildings, consequently his business suffered and he was obliged to suspend. Groh Willis E, 63, died this morning at his home in Corunna from heart trouble and dropsy. He was a lifelong resident of DeKalb County, born March 7, 1871 on a farm near Corunna. He later made his home in Corunna. Surviving are 2 adopted children, Mrs. Virgil Hartman of Ashley, and Robert Groh at home. Groh Wilma A, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Groh of Kendallville, died at her home on Tuesday following a long illness from blood poisoning. She was born in DeKalb County and attended the Ashley High School, later going to Fort Wayne where she secured employment with the Sherman-White Co. Failing health compelled her to return to the home of her parents. Surviving are the parents; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Cramer of Churubusco, Mrs. Kenneth Pomeroy of Elkhart, Mrs. Roy Wilson of Fort Wayne, Miss Ruth of Battle Creek, and Phyllis at home; two brothers, Lewis of Fort Wayne, and Paul of Corunna. Groll James Edward, 78, of Avilla, died February 2, 2004 at Kendallville Manor Healthcare Center. He was employed as a civilian for 36 years with the U.S. Air Force at Williams Air Force Base as an avionics communication technician. He retired in 1988. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. He was a member of Avilla American Legion Post 240 and a 50-year member of the American Radio Relay League as an amateur radio operator. He was born May 5, 1925 in Kansas City, Mo. to Ed and Leah (Robertson) Groll. He served with the U.S. Navy as an aviation radio technician first class from September 1942 until December 1945. On December 13, 1945 in Kansas City, he married Ella Marie Lewis. She died October 8, 1967 in Mesa, Ariz. On December 26, 1969 in Mesa, he married Janis Arlene Whan. She died February 15, 2003 in Avilla. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James Jr and Rosalind Groll of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Joy Terry of Phoenix; a stepdaughter and her husband, Lana and Steve Ritter of Goffstown, N.H.; 2 stepsons, Michael and Dennis Shroyer; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Doris Layton of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lorene and Keith Ulshafter of Crawford, Colo; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Edgar and Olga Groll of San Diego, Calif., and Larry and Jacki Groll of Crawford, Colo; his mother-in-law, Lileth Whan of Avilla; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Clara Whan of Avilla and Paul and Joyce Whan of Kendallville; a granddaughter, Christi Terry of Phoenix; and 3 step-grandchildren. Groll Janis Arlene, 70, died February 15, 2003 at her home. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla where she was a Sunday School teacher and Bible School worker. She was a director of Awana Club, a children's ministry in Arizona. She worked at the Kendallville Wal-Mart until becoming ill. She has lived in Avilla since 1994, coming from Arizona. She was born in Noble County February 25, 1932 to Kermit and Lileth (Weaver) Whan. Her father died March 31, 1993. Her mother survives in Avilla. She married Bernard Shroyer November 2, 1950. He died February 11, 1967 in Arizona. She married James Groll December 30, 1969. He survives in Avilla. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Steve Ritter of Goffstown, N.H.; 2 sons, Michael Shroyer of Grapevine, Texas and Dennis Shroyer of Hot Springs, Ark.; one stepson and his wife, James Jr. and Rosalind Groll of Phoenix; one stepdaughter, Joy Terry of Phoenix; 4 grandchildren and 2 spouses, Sabrina and Frank Carr, Samantha and Brian Coleman, Benjamin Cohen and Isaac Cohen; one step-granddaughter, Christy Terry; 3 great-grandchildren, Victoria, Franklin and Mackenzie Carr; and 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Joyce Whan of Kendallville, and Dick and Clara Whan of Avilla. Gromala Edward J, 64, of Howe, died Thursday at home from cancer. Born in Chicago Sept. 2, 1924, he was the son of Joseph E. and Rose (Gorcowska) Gromala. On Oct. 16, 1951 in Crown Point, he married Zelda Andusky. He moved to Howe 10 years ago from Hobart. He was a mechanic, retiring from Brighton Mushroom Farm in Brighton. He was a WW II Army veteran and 82nd Airborne paratrooper and a member of LaGrange American Legion Post. Surviving are his wife; a son, Joseph E. of Dallas Lake; a stepdaughter, Valerie Millus of Dallas Lake; a stepson, Anthony Kiefer of LaGrange; four sisters, Jean Mann of Keaau, Hawaii, Kay Sowers and Josephine Kasper, San Bernardino, Calif., and Florence Salazar of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Grooms Bertha E, 87, R. 1, Ligonier, died Sunday in Goshen Hospital from complications following a stroke. She was born in Rising Sun, Ohio Jan. 27, 1887 to John and Clara (Feister) Hoover. She married John E. Grooms April 1, 1905 in Paulding. He died in 1954. A resident of Noble County 68 years, she was a member of Ligonier United Methodist Church and a charter and 50-year member of Perry Twp Home Economics Club. Surviving are one son, Merrill, R. 1,Ligonier; one brother, Elmer, New Albany; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services Tuesday in Ulrey Funeral Home, Ligonier. Grooms Laroy, 75, died May 22, 2011 at his Goshen home. He was born Sept. 18, 1935 in Ligonier to Merril and Sally (Jones) Grooms. On Oct. 6, 1956 he married Barbara Culp in Goshen. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, John (Donna) Grooms of Rochester and Glenn Grooms of Goshen; grandsons Ryan, Shawn and Tyler Grooms; sisters, Carole (Ben) Russo of Elkhart, Mary (Bob) Culp of Goshen, Janet (Aaron) Prather of Osceola, and Pat (John) Cannon of Auburn. A graduate of Ligonier High School in 1953, he worked at Penn Controls for 15 years and retired from Monaco in 2002. Grooms Merrill, 71, of R. 1, died Wednesday at Goshen Hospital. Born June 21, 1913 to John and Bertha (Hoover) Grooms, he married Sally Jones Jan. 19, 1935. A farmer, he was a lifelong Ligonier area resident. He belonged to Ligonier United Methodist Church and Stone’s Trace Historical Society. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Carole Russo of Elkhart, Mary Culp of Goshen, Janet Prather of Osceola and Pat Cannon of Auburn; one son LaRoy of Goshen; and 12 grandchildren. Gross Agnes B, 76, Leesburg, died last Sunday at Strawberry Village Nursing Home, Ligonier. Born Jan. 9, 1902 in Leesburg, she lived in the community her entire life. She was married in 1925 to Donald Ferverda who died in 1937. In 1946 she married Earl Gross, who died in 1972. A 50-year member of the OES Leesburg Chapter, she formerly owned and operated Burger Dairy Stores in Goshen and Warsaw. She is survived by two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mable Hoover, Richmond, and Mrs. Lloyd (Lucille) Harley, Leesburg. Funeral July 12 at Mishler Funeral Home. Gross Barry died Saturday at St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident at 300S and 500E in Noble County Friday. The automobile in which he was riding collided with a hay wagon at the intersection. He was born April 16, 1969 in Allen County, the son of Luther and Rebecca Gross, R. 2, Churubusco. He had worked for Frazier Farms in Churubusco and was currently employed with Churubusco Woodworking. Surviving are his parents; a brother, Luke at home; two sisters, Mari and Sheri at home; his grandparents, Ernest and Mildred Gross and Paul and Margie Herron, Churubusco; a great-grandmother, Grace Barcus of Churubusco. Gross Edna M, 80, R. 2, Albion, died today at Whitley County Hospital. She was born July 12, 1901 in Baldwin, Mich., a daughter of Charles and Estella Garbutt Keller. On Dec. 20, 1956 she was married to Howard Gross. Their home was on a farm just outside of Merriam. He died May 26, 1978. She was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel. Gross Ernest L, 87, Eel River Twp, Allen County farmer, died Saturday in Whitley County Hospital in Columbia City. He had hip surgery earlier in the week but his death was unexpected. He was born in Smith Twp, Whitley County on February 14, 1907 to Morris V and Susie (Switzer) Gross. On September 7, 1929 he married Mildred Owen in Albion. She survives. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1926. Following his marriage he lived in Eel River Twp and at his present farm east of Churubusco since 1941. He was still active in the operation of the family farm. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church near Churubusco. He served as vice president of the Allen County Farm Bureau for four years, was a former advisory member of Eel River Twp and director of the Whitley County REMC for 32 years. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Rowland (Elaine) Gilbert of Churubusco; six sons, Max, Owen D., Luther M., and Roger Gross all of Churubusco, and Alton and Larry Gross, both of LaOtto; two brothers, Guy E. and Herbert Gross, both of Churubusco; a sister, Erma Wilkinson, of Nappanee; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Gross Guy E, 92, Churubusco, died June 23, 2003 at The Oaks in Columbia City. He was born April 10, 1910 in Smith Twp to Morris and Susie (Switzer) Gross. He married Mary Lois McGuire November 3, 1929 at her parents' home near Churubusco. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Louis and Donald Barnhart of Fort Wayne, Mary Ann and Leonard Hazen of Churubusco and Connie Nestel Teghtmeyer of Columbia City; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Don E. and Marilyn Gross and Lynn and Joellen Gross of Churubusco; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce A. Gross of Avilla; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a son, Robert J., December 29, 1997; 2 sons-in-law, Roger L. Nestel May 25, 1984 and James A. Teghtmeyer March 23, 1999; 3 brothers, Clarence, Ernest and Herbert; and a sister, Erma Wilkinson. He served as Smith Twp trustee from 1943 to 1951 and was an 18-year member of the board of directors of the Whitley County Hospital. He was organizer and past president of Indiana Drainage Contractors Association; a member of Churubusco United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM, OES 136, Scottish Rite Valley and Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne, and a charter member of Churubusco Rotary Club. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1928, was a lifelong resident of Smith Twp and farmed with his brother, Herbert L., until his retirement in 1990. Gross Howard R, 79, of R. 2, Albion, died Friday at the Whitley County Hospital. He was born Oct. 18, 1898 in Noble County to John A. and Emma M. Felger Gross. In 1921 he married Rachel Addis and they lived all their married life in Noble County. She preceded him in death in January 1955. In 1956 he married Edna Lyster and they lived near Merriam. He worked for the Noble County Co-op for 12 years and for eight years was employed by the Star Mobile Home in Union City, Mich. He was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, John A. of Colon, Mich., a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Edith) Trittipo of South Bend; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepsons, John Lyster of Battle Creek, Mich., Harold Lyster of Climax, Mich., and Robert Lyster of Ludington, Mich.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Jack (Wilma) Rench of Union City, Mich.; two brothers, Alfred of Churubusco and Everett of Auburn; one sister, Mrs. T. Gross John died at Ligonier Jan. 25, 1882, aged 47 years, 3 months and 21days, having been born in Galia County, Ohio Oct. 4, 1834. His father with his family settled in Leesburg, Kosciusko County, in 1837 and after living there 2 years removed to Benton in Elkhart County in 1839. In 1855 he married Miss Hoops of New Paris, Elkhart County. They had five children. No date
Gross Kenneth E, 77, a former resident of Churubusco, died August 25, 2009, at the Timbercrest Senior Living Community in North Manchester. He was born in Arcola on October 31, 1931, a son of Alfred H. and Icie (Shively) Gross. He graduated from Arcola High School in 1951. A volunteer with the Brethren Volunteer Service for two years, he served in Vienna, Austria helping rebuild the city that had been destroyed during World War II. In 1957 he again shipped out, this time from Chicago as a cook on an iron ore boat which sailed the Great Lakes. He worked as a cook for Republic Steel for 14 years, and later for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, retiring in 1984. An older brother Alfred Gross, Jr., died on September 20, 1991. Gross Leona M, 91, of Churubusco, died Feb. 11, 2008 at Regency Place in Fort Wayne. She spent all of her adult life on the family farm in Smith Twp in Whitley County until moving to Churubusco late in life. She worked at Blue Bell in Columbia City for 7 years and retired in 1981 from Dana Corp. in Churubusco after 27 years. She was a member of Good News Baptist Church in Churubusco and the Churubusco Literary Club. She was born July 18, 1916 to John Lawrence and Ella E. (Claxton) Diffendarfer in Green Twp, Noble County at the old Green Center Store her parents owned. She married Herbert L. Gross in Columbia City on Sept. 23, 1937. He died April 25, 1998. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Richard Baughman of Churubusco; a sister, Bonnie Heintzelman of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Irene Diffendarfer of Fort Wayne; and 2 granddaughters, Melissa Baughman and Lori and Kevin Haydl of Fort Wayne. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Diffendarfer in 1984, and a granddaughter, Stacey Baughman in 1972. Services Thursday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco. Gross Max G, 81, of Eel River Twp, Allen County, died Nov. 8, 2008 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He graduated from Huntertown High School in 1945 and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Churubusco American Legion Post 157 and retired from Figel Construction in Fort Wayne. Surviving are children, Roxie (Dennis) Gloyd, Jerrold "Jake" (Debbie) Gross and Sue (Tom) Gilbert of Churubusco; brothers, Owen (Vera), Luther (Becky) and Roger (Susie) of Churubusco, and Alton (Marilyn) and Larry (Patricia) of LaOtto; sister, Elaine (Rowland) Gilbert of Churubusco; sister-in-law, Linda Gross of Auburn; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Gross Mildred, 90, a resident of Churubusco and formerly of Eel River Twp in Allen County, died Tuesday in the emergency room of Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born in Noble County on June 18, 1909 to Otis and Maggie (Diffendarfer) Owen. She spent her formative years in Noble County. On September 7, 1929 in Albion she married Ernest Gross, who died June 4, 1994. She spent most of her married life on the family farm in Eel River Twp. She had moved to Churubusco earlier this year. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Rowland Gilbert of Churubusco; 6 sons and 5 daughters-in-law: Max Gross, Owen and Vera Gross, Luther and Becky Gross, and Roger and Suzy Gross, all of Churubusco, and Alton and Marilyn Poe Gross and Larry and Patricia Gross, all of LaOtto; one brother, Homer Owen of Albion; 2 sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruth Ott of Albion and Viva and Harold Harlan of Churubusco; 29 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Gross Rachel, about 54, who resided one-half miles west of Merriam, died Jan. 23 in Luckey Hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier. Gross Richard A, 77, of Rome City, died Friday at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He worked as a machinist for Kunkle Valve in Fort Wayne, retiring after 25 years in 1994. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Wolcottville and American Legion Post 381 in Rome City. He graduated from Arcola High School in 1949. He was born in Green Center on Oct. 12, 1930 to Everett and Mary Ruth (Mauer) Gross. He married Ruth Benzinger on April 30, 1960 at Soest Immanuel Lutheran Church in Allen County. A well-known area farmer and Swan Twp 4-H leader, he had been employed 16 years with Dana Corp. in Fort Wayne and was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He was born October 28, 1940 in Allen County, the son of Ernest and Mildred (Owen) Gross. He married Linda Miller August 1, 1964. Gross Virginia B, 93, of rural Churubusco in Noble County, died February 10, 2000 in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born in Allen County on August 19, 1916 to John and Gladys (Benward) Dafforn. On March 3, 1939 in Allen County she married Delbert E. Gross. He died February 11, 1991. She grew up in Eel River Twp and later in Fort Wayne. Following her marriage she lived on a farm in Swan Twp for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in their farming operation. Surviving are a daughter, Dianna Shank of Fort Wayne; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Steven E. and Karla Gross of Churubusco, and David W. and Theresa Gross of LaOtto; 2 sisters, Marilyn Gaff of Churubusco, and Phyllis Clawson of Avilla; 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was born July 6, 1906 to Sylvanus and Rosabell (Turner) Walker in Kendallville, and married Lester Grossman July 6, 1935 in Auburn. He died Aug. 27, 1982. Grossman George M, son of Henry M. and Mary Jane Grossman of Orange Twp, died Feb. 25 without a moment’s warning. He was driving his father’s team when they took fright and ran. While they were running down the field a wheel of the wagons struck a reclining stake of the fence, which threw him from the wagon with violence upon the frozen ground. He was born in Franklin County, Penn. Oct. 19, 1866 and came to Indiana with his parents April 15, 1871, who settled at Wright’s Corners, LaGrange County. Subsequently they moved to Noble County on the farm they now occupy. His brother died April 12, 1871. His mother died April 15, 1872. His little sister died 3 months after his mother’s death. He leaves one sister of 19 summers, a father and stepmother; 3 half-sisters and 3 half-brothers. He was 20 years, 4 months and 5 days old at the time of his death. Funeral Sunday. Grosswege Dina, 82, died at her home southeast of Avilla Friday morning complications and shock resulting from a fall on ice ten days ago when she fractured her hip. She had been a resident of this community practically all her life. Her husband died two years ago. Grosswege Henry, 77, died December 22 at his home southeast of Avilla following a stroke of apoplexy on Monday of the preceding week. He was born in Westphalia, Germany and came to this country when a young man. In 1874 he was married to Dina Fanger and moved to the farm where they have since resided. Surviving are his wife and seven children, one son and six daughters; and nine grandchildren; a brother in Germany. Grover Ethel, 81, (b. 2-9-1900 - d. 8-19-1981) died Wednesday at Whitley County Hospital after suffering a heart attack. She lived at North Webster. She married Gerald Grover in 1918 in Auburn. They lived in Auburn and in North Manchester, but quite a few years ago settled in Albion, living in the brick house at the corner of E. Main and Elm St. He was a long-time Standard Oil representative. He retired a number of years ago. She was a member of Albion Study Club, Eastern Star and Thimble Sew and So Club, and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church when living in Albion. She was born in 1900 to Richard and Ola Smith Snyder. Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Thomas (Frances), Mrs. Max Rimmel (Doris), both of Albion, Mrs. Eugene Coverstone (Jean), North Webster, and Mrs. Donald King (Patricia), West Lafayette; one brother, Harold, Auburn; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Groves Mary Josephine, a pioneer resident of LaGrange County, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Hardiman in Howe where she had been making her home. She had been blind for the past 22 years. Services were today at the Methodist Church in Howe. Burial will occur in Pretty Prairie Cemetery. She was born Dec. 31, 1856 in Holmes County, Ohio, the oldest of four children born to John Q. A. Booth and Sarah Pomeroy, all of whom have preceded her in death. She came to LaGrange County when three years of age in a covered wagon. She attended the Ontario Collegiate Institute and then taught school until her marriage Dec. 14, 1876 to William H. H. Groves of Greenfield Mills, where they made their home for a few years and later moved to a farm home near Pretty Prairie. She was a charter member of the Ladies’ Christian Alliance which later became the Ladies Aid. After moving to Howe she transferred her membership to the Howe Methodist Church. Two daughters, Mrs. Charles Hardiman, and Mrs. W. H. W. Hardiman, both of Howe; one granddaughter, Miss Josephine Hardiman; a sister, Mrs. William Booth of Orland survive. He was born in Noble County Oct. 13, 1891 and moved to Moorestown, Mich. in 1911, where he married Emily Anderson July 9, 1912. In 1928 they moved to Kimmell and in 1938 moved to Clayton, Mich. Growcock Blane R, 50, died Oct. 16, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Mishawaka. He was born Jan. 31, 1963, to Alvin “Dean” and Hermal Growcock in Kimmell. An active member of the Logan Center, South Bend community, where he was a resident for many years, Blane enjoyed a wide range of activities such as dancing, bowling and caring for animals. He previously participated in Special Olympics, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, rode horses with Reins of Life, was employed through Logan Industries, and looked forward to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair every year. He is survived by his sister, Vivian (Jerry) Needler, New Paris; brothers, Larry (Dina) Growcock, Bardolino, Italy, and Roderick Growcock, Indianapolis. Growcock Deo Dean and his wife, Judith Ann, were killed September 7, 1967 when a car drag-racing another on U. S. 33 north of Wolf Lake veered across the center line and hit the Growcock vehicle head-on. They were married at Cromwell Aug. 30, 1958 and are survived by two sons, who were also in the accident, Loran Dean 8, and Roderick Allen 7. She was born Feb. 6, 1941 to Albert and Lattice (Ganger) Smith, and is survived by her parents, of Cromwell; two brothers, Albert Jr., Goshen, Tharon, Syracuse; and one sister, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Kreager, Goshen. She was born March 30, 1897 in Richland Twp, Whitley County, the daughter of Fielding and Sarah (Kline) Barney. The widow of Myron J. Growcock, she was graduated from Larwill High School and Winona Teachers’ College, Warsaw. She taught at Red Bush School, Larwill School and in Fort Wayne. A member of Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City, and the American Legion Auxiliary, she is survived by two sons, William D. of Fort Wayne, and Kenneth W. of Muskogee, Okla.; and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Eastburn, Marion. He lived more than 50 years southwest of Avilla, on a farm which he sold three years ago. In 1902 he was married to Sarah Fulk, who preceded him in death in 1939. Recently he resided with a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Leona) Davis at Warsaw, where he was stricken with a heart attack. Gruey Elizabeth, 79 years, 1 month and 10 days, died Aug. 20. She was born in West Virginia on July 10, 1800. Her father was the Rev. William Ingold, a native of Pfaltz, Germany, and a graduate of Heidelberg University. At the age of 5 she removed with her parents to eastern Penn., where she grew to womanhood. In 1818 her father having died, she with her mother and sister removed to Pittsburgh, Pa., where her brother, Rev. John M. Ingold, was pastor of the German Reformed Church. A few years later she moved to Wayne County, Ohio, where in April 1840 she married Joseph Gruey. In 1847 they came to this place where they have since resided. She was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom survive her, with 2 stepchildren. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. ^ 8-28-1879

His father, Nicholas Gruey, was a native of Denmark; his mother, Margaret Delcore, was born in Paris, France. At the age of 5 he removed with his parents to western Penn., where he grew to manhood. In 1840 he removed to Wayne County, Ohio, and in 1848 to Noble County. He was one of the 4 original members of the church to which he belonged and which was organized May 6, 1848. ^ 8-4-1881

On July 3, 1936 in Winchester, he married Harriet E. Byers. A veteran of WW II and a metallurgist, he moved to Kendallville from New Castle 17 years ago. He was a member of Mitchell Street United Methodist Church, Avilla American Legion and a lifetime member of American Society of Metals. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Darrelle B. A retired painter and decorator, he was former trustee of Eel River Twp, served on the Allen County Board of Review for many years and was a member of Agape Church of the Brethren on Carroll Road. Gunder Gary Allen, two-months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon Gunder, was killed in an automobile crash on Road 3 about a mile south of Kendallville last Sunday. His parents and two occupants of another car were injured. The other driver, said to have admitted to drinking a "few beers", skidded off the pavement on a curve and crashed sideways into the Gunder car. Surviving are the parents; grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Walter W. Gunder of Fort Wayne. Walter was for many years employed at the Albion water and light plant. Gunnett Andrew, 67, was born in Richland County, Ohio, July 26, 1832 and died at Kendallville, Sept. 27, 1899. He married Mary, eldest daughter of Joseph and Ruth Anna Ogle. They had two children, Mrs. J. W. Berhalter, and Miss Ella, who with their mother and a brother and sister, survive. He was one of four brothers who responded to the country’s call in the Civil War and was the last survivor of the four. Gushwa Philip, one of the first settlers of Fairfield Twp, died at his residence Dec. 16. He was born in Somerset County, Pa. Sept. 7, 1802. When about 4 years of age his parents moved to Westmoreland County, same state. When about the age of 20 he moved to Holmes County, Ohio, where he was married Nov. 20, 1825 to Mary Mohr. He resided in this and Coshocton County until 1845 when he with his family emigrated to DeKalb County on the present farm where he died. She was born May 11, 1895 near St. Joseph, Ill., the daughter of Henry and Lillie M. Weilbaker. Her parents and family moved to Fort Wayne where she was married Nov. 10, 1915. He married Betty Ann Griffin on October 9, 1965 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kendallville. Gustin Jack B, 52, of R. 4, Albion, died Wednesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Nov. 6, 1926 in Noble County, he was the son of Willard Lee and Anna Mae (Wielbaker) Gustin. He married Ruth Campbell in 1966. He entered the U. S. Navy following graduation from Kendallville High School and served three years. He then joined the U. S. Air Force and served 17 years, retiring in 1965. He recently completed 10 years of service as an electrician for Dana Corporation. He had resided in Churubusco for 11 years, moving to Albion in 1977. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Churubusco, Air Force Sergeants’ Association No. 762, Moose Lodge in Columbia City, and 40 & 8 Club. Gutelius Maude, 65, resident of Kendallville, died of a heart attack Saturday. She was born in Bluffton June 26, 1874 to N. T. and Jane Miller. She married H. E. Gutelius and the couple moved to Kendallville in 1907 when they established the Gutelius 5 cent to $5 store. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Gutelius Nelle Sedgwick, 98, Ligonier, died Friday in Greencroft Nursing Home, Goshen. She was the first Red Cross nurse in Noble County after graduating from Epworth Memorial Hospital in South Bend in 1906. She was born Jan. 8, 1882 in Ligonier, the daughter of Robert D. and Sarah E. (Shobe) Kerr. She was married to Harry Gutelius April 3, 1949 in Kendallville. He preceded her in death. A member of the Ligonier First Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star, she was retired from nursing after working for Dr. C. D. Lane. She spent her entire life in Ligonier. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Don (Janice) Cotherman, Cape Coral, Fla.; and one son, Robert K. Sedgwick, Syracuse; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Guthrie Charles E, son of John H. and Ann Guthrie, was born in Jefferson Twp, Oct. 1, 1876; died Sept. 26, 1915, aged 38 years, 9 months and 25 days. He graduated in the district schools of Jefferson Twp and the Albion High School and also took a course at the Angola normal college. He then taught school for five years in Jefferson Twp and one term in Allegan County, Mich. He was married to Iva Collins on April 6, 1902 at Ganges, Mich. For four or five years after his marriage he followed farming, then he got an R. F. D. mail route in Fennville, Mich., which occupation he followed until his health failed him and he resigned in March 1912. In March 1913 he purchased a farm two miles northwest of Avilla, where he spent his remaining days. He leaves his wife; one daughter, father; one sister, Mrs. Reuben Oliver; three brothers, George, Frank and Elmer. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Fennville, Mich. in 1909. + 9-?-1915
Guthrie Dale, 61, Albion, teacher and principal of York Center School, died Thursday (d. 9-9-1971) at the school, a brief time after eating his noon lunch. Born Feb. 9, 1910 in Jefferson Twp, he was the son of George S. and Emma (Zigler) Guthrie. He was married to Mabel Addis Sept. 13, 1930. She survives. He had taught school in Noble County for 44 years and was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, a retired Albion fireman and belonged to the Indiana State Teacher’s Association and the National Educational Association. Kidd of Albion, being 70 years, 10 months and 18 days of age. She was the eldest of a family of six children, two, Marietta and George, preceding her in death. On Dec. 18, 1877 she married George W. Guthrie. They had one daughter, Grace M. They took three other children to care for, one, John VanBuskirk, being with them until of age. Her husband died Nov. 28, 1907. She married Zachariah Thomas of Albion on Nov. 29, 1921. Because of ill health it was necessary for them to break up their home and live with their respective children. She was member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Guthrie Frank W died June 5, 1948. A retired farmer of Jefferson Twp, he had been in poor health for some time and last Saturday went to the Willis Brown farm a mile south of Albion and there hanged himself to a rafter in the barn. Guthrie John H, son of John and Jane Guthrie, was born in Richland County, Ohio, Aug. 4, 1840, and died at the home of his son, Elmer, in Albion, Nov. 24, 1919 at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 20 days. When a small boy he with his parents moved to Jefferson Twp, where they lived for a few years. They returned to Ohio for a few years, coming back to Indiana and locating on a farm one and one-half miles south of Albion. July 3, 1870 he married Ann Inscho, who died June 25, 1901. They had four sons and two daughters, two daughters and one son preceding him. One daughter died in infancy. He answered the call of his country in the War of ’61, being a member of Company 4, 139th Regiment of Indiana. When quite a young man he united with the Primitive Baptist Church. Guthrie Miles Elmer, about 47, was born Feb. 20, 1875, the son of John and Ann Guthrie, and died June 12, 1923, aged 48 years 3 months and 22 days. After kissing his wife and bidding her a happy good morning, Elmer Guthrie, residing near the east corporation line near Albion, went to his barn Tuesday morning shortly after 5 o’clock and hanged himself to a beam. His lifeless form, dangling from the end of the rope, was found by his wife. No exact cause can be given for his act although it is said his mind had been greatly perturbed over religious matters for the past few weeks. On the 12th day of March 1904 he married Harriet A. Guyas Kevin M, 20, died Thursday from gas fumes in a farm silo on Ind. 9 at Valentine. He was replacing air bags in the silo when he fell from a ladder and was overcome by gas fumes. He was born Sept. 1, 1969 in Columbia City, the son of William J. and Carol (Cripe) Guyas. He was a 1988 West Noble High School graduate and a member of the Ligonier Evangelical Church and Cromwell Fire Dept. Surviving are his parents, a sister, Lisa and a brother, Tony, both of Ligonier; grandparents, Winona Guyas, Alpha and Roberta Cripe, all Ligonier. Services Sunday in Ligonier Evangelical Church. Guyas William “Bill”, 70, of Ligonier, died April 15, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. He was born on November 21, 1941, to Joseph G. and Winona (Gloor) Guyas in Akron, Ohio. He married Carol (Cripe) Guyas on February 3, 1963. He was a member of the Ligonier Evangelical Church. In the 1960s he worked at Maci’s Slip in Syracuse, and then went on to work at Silgan Plastics where he retired from after nearly 40 years of service as Traffic Manager. He also owned and operated Country Basket & Gifts with his wife, Carol, for over 14 years.  He is survived by his wife; one son, Anthony (Vickie) Guyas of Ligonier; one daughter, Lisa (Steve) Paul of Goshen; 5 grandchildren, Jonathan, Jack and Daniel Guyas, Michael and Samantha Paul; one brother, George Guyas of Syracuse; 2 sisters, Margaret Hursey of Cisco, Ill., and Donna Pepple of Defiance, Ohio. Guyas Winona M, 88, of Defiance, Ohio, died Aug. 1, 2001 at home. She was born in Sherwood,. Ohio, on Aug. 30, 1912 to George and Hattie (Goodenough) Gloor. She married Joseph Guyas on Jan. 29, 1929 in Defiance. He died in 1982. She was past owner and builder of the Cromwell Laundromat. Surviving are 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and Darwin Hursey of Cisco, Ill., and Donna Pepple of Defiance; two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Sharon Guyas of Syracuse and William and Carol Guyas of Ligonier; 16 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Guymon Muzetta M, 90, of Fort Wayne, died July 5, 2004 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. A 1932 graduate of Kendallville High School, she received her master's degree at Indiana University. She taught home economics for 30 years at New Castle Chrysler High School. She was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville. She was born May 20, 1914 in Windfall, Ind. to Oren O. and Virginia A. (DeWitt) Guymon. Surviving are a niece. A sister, Frances McMillan, preceded her in death. Guymon O O "Pop", 88, former athletic director and coach at Kendallville High School, died Wednesday in Henry County Hospital at New Castle. A native of Windfall, Ind., he came to Kendallville in the fall of 1922 and retired in the spring of 1958. He was a coach, athletic director and math and social studies teacher. Born June 13, 1885, he was the son of Joseph and Isadora (Somers) Guymon. On Sept. 30, 1905 he was married in Windfall to Virginia A. DeWitt. She died Feb. 14, 1971. They lived 41 years in Kendallville. During a few years when he left the education field, he worked in a Kendallville bank. Guymon Field, an athletic field near East Noble High School, was named in his honor. A "Pop Guymon" award is given annually to an outstanding high school athlete. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Muzetta, New Castle, and Mrs. James (Frances) McMillan, South Bend; and a granddaughter, Miss Patricia Ann McMillan. Guymon Virginia A, 88, New Castle, died Sunday in Henry County Hospital. The former Virginia DeWitt, she was born Aug. 3, 1882 in Sharpsville, Ind. She and Oren O. "Pop" Guymon were married Sept. 30, 1905 in Windfall, Ind. They had lived in New Castle for eight years, moving there from Kendallville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Lydia Circle. She was a 50-year member of the Kendallville Chapter of OES. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Miss Muzetta, New Castle, and Mrs. James (Frances) McMillan, South Bend; and one grandchild. Services Wednesday in Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home. Guysinger Alonzo, 82, died Monday at the home of his son, Glenn, in LaOtto. Death was due to heart trouble. He had been employed as a landscape artist. His wife died about a year ago. Guysinger Joyce Lavon, 87, of Avilla, died Feb. 22, 1998 in Kendallville Manor. She was born in Payne, Ohio, Aug. 23, 1910 to Alonzo and Mame (Scheefel) Guysinger. She moved to Avilla in 1943. She had worked for Wayne Knitting Mills in Fort Wayne for 18 years, Studebaker Airport of 3 years and Ronald Jones and Wilmer Weimer Insurance Agencies. She retired after 17 years as office secretary for Garrett Medical Clinic. She was a member of the First Church of God in Kendallville. Gwinnup Carlton Eugene, 83, died July 18, 2007 at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. He retired from Kraft Foods in 1985 after 22 years of service. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1940. He was born in Andersonville, Ind., on Sept. 14, 1923 to Ophir and Esther (Sherwood) Gwinnup. He married Beatrice Marie Shane on Sept. 12, 1943 in Rushville. She died March 8, 2001. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bill Routsong and Nancy and David Carter of Kendallville; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Everett Sizemore of Connersville; 8 grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa and John Owen, Michael and Kimberly Routsong, Elizabeth and Abram Gregory, Nathan and Tara Routsong, Nicholas Routsong, Jane and Jamathan Cox, Steven and Korey Krieger and Stacy and Mike Fry; and 23 great-grandchildren.
