Gibson Elizabeth, wife of Adam G. Gibson of Elkhart Twp, died at her home
there Aug. 17, 1895, aged 71 years, 4 months and two days. She was born in Ohio April 15, 1824. She came into the southern part of the territory
now constituting Noble County on the 4th day of April, 1827, being
the youngest of six orphaned children who came with Joel Bristol and his wife,
Susan, the sister of their mother, the widow Tibbot, who had then recently died
at the village of Fort Wayne. These eight persons were the first white people
who settled on Noble county soil. This was nine years before the county was
organized. She was then a child, and thenceforward her whole life was passed
here, a continuous residence of over sixty-eight years - making her by several
years the oldest or earliest of the pioneer, and her life on Noble County soil
longer than that of any other - dead or living - at the time of her death.
Her brother, Isaac Tibbot, the last survivor before her left no accessible
family history and we are left to assume that her life to the time of her
marriage in 1843 was externally uneventful. Her environments were both good and
bad. The locality of her childhood’s first home had the name of "Rowdy
Ridge" - the rendezvous of savages, trafficking furs and game for whisky,
of rough hunters and explorers, gamblers and reckless revelers, profanity,
vulgarity and violence. The presiding genius of the whole, in her eyes, was the
head of the household - her uncle, and actual if not legal guardian - the
proprietor of the only white man’s cabin in the district and landlord of the
only tavern on the Indian trail running northwestwardly through the district.
She had two older sisters and two older brothers. She married Adam G. Gibson in
1843. She had united with the Methodist Church the year before. + Clippings book

Gilmore John G - Avilla, April 7, 1873.
Yesterday our neighborhood was thrown into unusual excitement by the
startling report that a man had been found hanging in the woods of Mrs. Peter
Weimer and was dead. Nearly the
whole neighborhood turned out to see the man hanging, as it was a new sight to
most. No one recognized the deceased.
A jury was called and sworn and after removing the body and searching the
pockets of the deceased, a memorandum book was found and it was ascertained his
name was John G. Gilmore, who has been staying with his brother-in-law, Luman
Lobdell about 2 miles east of Avilla. He
has lived in Sturgis, Mich., in Wawaka, and also in Auburn.
He was last seen last Friday afternoon at which time he told his wife he
was going to Michigan to procure work. The
jury determined his death took place sometime on April 4 and was found the 6th.
He leaves a wife and 2 children. The
wife is with her sister, Mrs. Lobdell. Not a friend had the deceased on the ground and not a team
could be procured to remove the body from the woods.
But Joel Isbell of Avilla went in the night through the rain with his
horse and carriage and brought the body to Avilla. Now the question arose, where should he be buried.
Of course, not a cemetery belonging to a church organization; that ground
is as sacred as a church communion table. There
was found a potter’s field in Swan Twp donated to this section of the country
for the purpose of burying their dead by the late Hiram King who had a heart
that reached out for the cause of humanity.
The deceased was about 35 years old.
