Gaff Joseph D
, son of Robert and Mary Deardorff Gaff, was born near Canton in Stark County, Ohio, Aug. 11, 1833, died Aug. 3, 1922, aged 89 years, 11 months and 22 days. He married Susan Hawk on Jan. 2, 1859. Deardorff of Cromwell, and Oliver of Kimmell; 41 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. In 1839 he came with his parents to Indiana, who drove an ox team from their Ohio home to near Benton in Elkhart County, a distance of 250 miles. The boy, then six years of age, walked every step of the distance, helping to drive the stock. The trail over which they traveled was, for a great distance, through an almost unbroken forest. (Fort Wayne had only 500 people living there at that time.) The family retraced and settled near Round Lake in Whitley County, Indiana, where they lived for one year, moving from there to Green Twp, Noble County, where he has resided continuously except a short time in Sparta Twp, almost 81 years a resident of Green Twp. He was the oldest resident of the township, having lived more years in the township than any other person. He attended school in the first school building erected in the township and the writer believes he helped to erect it. He was always among the foremost to be interested in the building up and the development of his community, indeed he was one of the pioneers such as to whom we are deeply indebted for the building and making this great country ours. Uncle Joe was always just and honorable with his fellow men. He had strong convictions and could not be swayed from a thing he thought was right and never upheld a thing he thought was wrong. He was always interested in civic affairs, having attended every election since 1854, casting his first presidential vote for John C. Fremont in 1856.
