Eagles Lucy was
born in Saratoga County, N.Y. Feb. 10, 1804, and died at the residence of her
daughter, Mrs. Zillah Bothwell, April 7, 1877.
Being the oldest of a family of 7 children, she was not only a sister,
but also a mother to the younger members. In
1811 when she was 7 years of age her father removed to what then was called
Genesee County and settled about midway between Rochester and Buffalo.
Soon after, the War of 1812 broke out and the country being in possession
of hostile tribes of Indians made the condition of the settlers not only one of
privation but of actual peril. When
about 17, she was married to Leander B. Eagles, with whom she lived until 1859
when he died. Since his
death she has continued to live on the old homestead.
She emigrated to Noble County in 1837.
When about 15, she united with the Christian Church. She was the mother of 7 children, 4 of whom survive her, and
she left 45 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. About 14 years ago, against the advice of friends and from a
sense of duty she took to her home a waif, in the person of a little Irish girl,
and adopted her into her family, one who had been thrown out upon the world from
the great city of New York. She
never had cause to regret her course, for although the wayward disposition of
the child was, at times, a severe trial, she triumphed, and the affection of
that homeless girl for her foster mother was truly touching.
