Coe Carey Lee
, 71, of rural Kendallville, died June 23, 2008 at his home. He was the third generation to take care of the family farm west of Kendallville. He graduated from Albion-Jefferson High School in 1955 and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church. He was born in Kendallville on April 21, 1937 to Chester Lee and Dorothy Marie (Cary) Coe. He married Vanita Marguerite Ott on Oct. 6, 1957 in Kimmell. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Marcy of Kendallville and Douglas and Portia of Fort Wayne; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Michael Curtis of Albion and Sandra and Dan Maki of Ishpeming, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, Kari, Travis, Lacy, Cheston, Spencer and Shelby Coe, Kathy, Nick, Gabe and Michaela Curtis, and Jake and Sarina Maki; a sister, Sharon Olds of Sturgis, Mich.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and Diana Coe of Albion. Coe Carol J
, 77, of Rome City, died May 8, 2010 at her residence. She worked for Target and then for Harris-Kayout in Fort Wayne from 1983 to 2000. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in LaGrange. She was born in Fort Wayne on March 17, 1933 to Aubrey and Gladys (Cress) Berger. She married Oscar Coe in Hoagland, Ind. on Dec. 22, 1971. Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Penny Scherrer of Auburn, Jeri and Wayne Wigner of Topeka, and Deborah and Frank Milligan of Hoagland; 4 sons and 3 daughters-in-law, Michael and Ganne Allen of Alamogordo, N.M., Doyle Allen of Marshall, Mich., James and Christine Coe and Todd and Bridgett Coe of Rome City; 3 stepchildren; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister Barbara Wagner of Plant City, Fla.; and 3 brothers, James Berger of Fort Wayne, Jerry Berger of Columbia City and Robert Berger of Great Falls, Montana. Coe Chester L, 68, was born July 1, 1904 on the same farm he has resided on all his life to H. L. and Ida (Wells) Coe. On Nov. 28, 1930 he married Dorothy Cary, who survives. He died Friday in McCray Hospital. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Olds, Sturgis, Mich.; two sons, Carey Lee, R. 3, and Leslie Wayne, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Weltha) Linville, Kendallville, and Mrs. Alvin (Velma) Grove, Fostoria, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Coe Dorothy M, 85, of Kendallville, died April 13, 1995 in McCray Hospital. She was born in LaGrange County Nov. 28, 1909 to John and Ulilla (Sigler) Cary. On Nov. 26, 1930 in Elkhart she married Chester Coe. He died May 11, 1973. She had worked 10 years in the dietary department of McCray Hospital and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Olds of Sturgis, MI; 2 sons, Carey of Kendallville and Leslie of Albion; 6 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Coe Duane A, 73, of Albion, died Sept. 22, 2010 at Northridge Village Nursing & Rehab. He was employed at Weatherhead for 18 years and retired in 1997 from Sea Nymph Boat Co. in Syracuse with 15 years of service. He was born Nov. 5, 1936 in Albion to Orval and Mabel (Heltzel) Coe. He married Shirley A. Iden on May 23, 1955 in Blue Ridge, Ga. He graduated from Albion-Jefferson High School and was a member of Tri Lake Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; his children, Georgia A (Denis) Mynhier of Ligonier, Ray (Maria) Coe of Columbia City, Tony (Beverly) Coe of South Whitley, Cindy Short of Fort Wayne, Tammy (Ricky) Jefferson of Larwill, Buddy (Misty) Coe of South Whitley, Sherry (Ted) Watson of Ligonier and Kelly (Melissa) Coe of South Whitley; 30 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Coe of Missouri. Coe Harold H, 100, died Sept. 30, 2005 at Shepherd of the Hill nursing home. He retired from Newnam Foundry in 1991 and was a member of Albion Wesleyan Church. He was born June 18, 1905 in Albion to Perry W. and Orilla (Nicodemus) Coe. He married Ethel Z. Wells on Feb. 4, 1938 in the Albion Wesleyan parsonage. She died March 7, 1996. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Dale Metcalfe of Muncie and Sharon and William Kessler of Albion; 5 grandchildren, Susan, Brian, Alan and David Metcalfe and John Kessler; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Orval Coe and Leo Hawk; and 2 sisters, Eva Ravenscroft and Bonnie Marshall. Services Tuesday in Albion Wesleyan Church. Coe Harrison, the mail carrier at Albion, was struck by a B&O engine last evening and was killed. He was evidently proceeding along the platform and must have been closer to the tracks than he realized. An engine doing some switching was backing down the track, struck the handle of his cart, the blow jerking him ahead of the locomotive. He was a veteran of the War of Secession and had been employed in the government service as a mail carrier for a number of years. He was about 70 years old and leaves a wife, a son and a daughter. ^ 3-9-1911
Coe Henry H, about 81, (b. 6-30-1870) a lifelong resident of Albion, died July 17, 1951 at Alfran Nursing Home near Pierceton. A painter by profession, he was a member of the Albion North Star Lodge No. 380, IOOF. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Jennie Frazure of Albion. Funeral at Bonham & Miser Funeral Home Saturday. Coe Larry Dean, 3-month old (b. 10-26-1956) son of Duane and Shirley Coe, Wolf Lake, died January 19 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Fort Wayne. Coe Leroy Eugene, son of Roger and Rebecca (Juillerat) Coe, R. 2, Albion, was stillborn Tuesday at McCray Hospital, Kendallville. Coe Lola M, 63, died Sept. 20 in Three Rivers Convalescent Center in Fort Wayne. She lived in the rural Auburn-Garrett area the last five years. She was born in Bluffton on Aug. 27, 1920, the daughter of Calvin and Mary (Beverstein) Strahm. She married Lawrence Coe in Feb. 1979 in Huntington. Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Barbara McConey, Fort Wayne; two brothers, Reuben, Fort Wayne, Ralph, Malaysia; one sister, Irene Dawn of Orange, CA. Services Thursday in D. O. Coe Mabel, 71, Kendallville, died today in Alfran Nursing Home, Columbia City. She was born Feb. 7, 1908 in Noble County to Mr. and Mrs. Myrick Heltzel. She was married to Orval Coe, who died Dec. 26, 1961. She was a nurses’ aid at the Lutheran Home, Kendallville, and a member of the Albion Wesleyan Church. Surviving are three sons, Donald, Wolf Lake, Russell, Albion, and Duane, Columbia City; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A brother preceded her in death. Coe Mary Ellen, daughter of William and Sarah Henderson, was born in Allen County, Ind., Oct. 2, 1841; died at her home in Albion July 30, 1925, aged 83 years, 9 months and 28 days. She married Harrison A. Coe of Green Twp April 7, 1864. They had four children, the oldest dying in infancy. After moving to Albion, she became a member of the United Brethren Church. The father and husband died 14 years ago. She and her son, Henry, daughter Jennie, and granddaughter, Gladys made up the home. She leaves two sons, Perry W., living east of Albion, and Henry H. and daughter Jennie, at home; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; one sister, Hannah Jennings of Sheridan, Mich.; one brother, U. Coe Orval N, (b. 2-16-1903) who resided southeast of Albion, died in McCray Hospital December 26. Surviving are his widow, Mabel; 3 sons, Duane of Kendallville, and Donald and Russell of Albion; seven grandchildren; a brother, Harold; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Ravenscroft and Mrs. Bonnie Marshall of Albion; and a half-brother, Leo Hawk of Auburn. Coe Oscar B, 84, of Rome City, died June 29, 2012, at Parkview Noble Hospital. He was born May 23, 1928, in Fort Wayne to Oscar D. and Josephine L. (Richard) Coe. He retired as a truck driver having worked for Associated Truck Lines and American Natural Resources (ANR) Trucking. He was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in LaGrange, Rome City Sons of the American Legion and the Eagles of Kendallville. On Dec. 22, 1971, in Hoagland, he married Carol J. Berger. She died May 8, 2010. Surviving are 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Vickie James of Fort Wayne and Jeri Sue and Wayne Wigner of Topeka; 4 sons and daughters-in-law, James and Christine Coe, Todd and Bridgett Coe and Glenn and Rosemary Coe, all of Rome City, and Kenneth and Karen Coe of Hoagland; 4 stepchildren; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Joan Darrow of Dayton, Ohio, and Janice Ludwig of Avilla; and 2 brothers, Robert P. Coe Perry W, lifelong resident of Noble County, died at his home Dec. 23, 1947. He was the son of Harrison and Ella Coe and born in Albion, Feb. 21, 1866. In June 1901 he married Orilla Nicodemus Hawk. Their children were Mrs. Eva Ravenscroft, Orval and Harold Coe, and Mrs. Bonnie Marshall, all of Albion; also Leo Hawk, a stepson of Auburn. He also leaves a brother, Henry and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Frazure, both Albion. He had been employed as a city engineer for the last 23 years. Funeral in the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Coe Ronald L, 29, died Sunday at his Fort Wayne home. He was a lifetime resident of Fort Wayne and was service manager for Coe Heating and Air Conditioning. He also drove stock cars at Baer Field and Avilla Raceways. Coe Russell, 67, died at Life Care Center of LaGrange July 25, 2002. He was born Feb. 23, 1935 in Kendallville to Orval and Mabel (Heltzel) Coe. On July 23, 1954 in married Shirley Garrison. He was a 1935 graduate of Albion High School and was a self-employed real estate broker, appraiser and auctioneer for over 40 years and a maker of violins and violas for over 30 years. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Kendallville. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters, Karen and Rodney Clouse of Ligonier, Robin Rex of Fort Wayne, Lorena Czosnouski of South Bend; 3 sons, Jerry of Albion, Brian of Edwardsburg, MI, Perry and Christi of Churubusco; 14 grandchildren; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Mary of Missouri and Duane and Shirley of Columbia City. Coe Ruth H, 49, Wolf Lake, died Tuesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Aug. 28, 1927 in Los Angeles, Calif., she was the daughter of Charles and Lavon (Fulk) Wysong. She married Donald E. Coe June 29, 1952 in Cosperville. She had been an employee of Wolf Lake Lumber Co. until 1975. She was nearly a lifelong resident of the Wolf Lake Community. Surviving are the husband and parents; one daughter, Peggy J. at home; six sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Mildred) Rose, rural Wawaka, Mrs. John (Vera) Rose, rural Wawaka, Mrs. Thad Price, rural Kimmell, Mrs. Calvin (Helen) Knapp, Angola, and Mrs. Marvin (Beverly) Sponhauer, Ligonier; and four brothers, Alvin, rural Cromwell, Charles "Bob" Jr., Wawaka, Earl, Wolf Lake, and Max, rural Cromwell. Coe Ryan A, 11, died Sept. 23, 2005 in Rome City. He and 5 other youths were throwing rocks at the walls of a private gravel pit posted with "No Trespassing" signs. The force of the rocks caused an avalanche which brought a tree down on the boy, killing him instantly. He was born in Kendallville on March 20, 1994 to Glenn and Michelle (Gilbert) Coe Jr. Surviving are his parents; grandparents, Dennis and Karen Gilbert of Kendallville, Glenn Coe and Rose Coe of Rome City; great-grandparents, Oscar and Carol Coe of Rome City, Lorna Mavis of Auburn, Pauline Frye of Kendallville and Helen Hoover of Leo; 2 brothers, Tylar and Kyle Coe; 3 sisters, Maranda and Paige Coe and Cierra Brady. He was preceded in death by grandparents Dennis and Clara Gilbert; great-grandfathers Karl Mavis and Paul Bollinger; and a great-great-grandmother, Frankie Miser. Coe Vanita, 71, of rural Kendallville, died Aug 2, 2010 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born near Albion on April 27, 1939 to Harold and Ocie (Loveall) Ott. She graduated from Albion Jefferson High School in 1957 and married Carey Coe on Oct. 6, 1957. He died June 23, 2008. She was a waitress at the V&A Restaurant and also worked in the office at McCray Refrigeration. She operated a photography business for many years. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church. Cofel Merle E, 63, died in Liberty Towers, Tulsa, Okla. He was born March 3, 1909 to Mr. and Mrs. William E. Cofel and was married in 1929 to Eileen Preston. He was a Cities Service Oil Co. employee for more than 40 years. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Merleen) Garber, Glen Burnie, Md.; a son, William E., Parton, Ill.; four grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. George Bentley, Kendallville. Coffel Robert W, 72, of Kendallville, died Sunday in McCray Hospital. He was born in Kendallville Aug. 2, 1916, the son of William and Clara (Hemer) Coffel. On April 25, 1936 in Mishawaka, he married Violet Rife. A lifetime area resident, he retired after 35 years as factory manager for McCray Refrigeration. He also worked for Heat Controller in Michigan. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Linda Sue of Kendallville; a son, Larry of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death. Coffel Violet E, 72, died Tuesday at Parkview Hospital. She was born March 8, 1919 in Fort Wayne to E. A. and Jennie (Cobbs) Rife. She married Robert William Coffel on April 25, 1936 in Mishawaka. He died March 26, 1989. She was a proofreader for several years for the News-Sun and a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Sue of Kendallville; a son, Larry of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Mercedes Reynolds of Rome City; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Coffel William F, 63, a resident of Rome City many years ago, later a resident of Kendallville 45 years, died Dec. 23 at McCray Hospital. He was employed as molder at Flint & Walling Mfg. Co. thirty-five years. In 1899 he married Clara E. Hemer, who together with three sons, Robert William and Gerald Willard of Kendallville, and Merle Edward of Chicago survive. Three sisters, Mrs. Ada Hines, Rome City, Mrs. Chloe Bruce, Brimfield, Mrs. Dell Long, Fort Wayne, and one brother, Arch, Rome City, also survive. + 12-?-1942

Coffelt Doris J, 85, of Fort Wayne, April 7, 2013, at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. She was born in Hillsdale County, Michigan, on October 20, 1927, to John and Berniece (Smith) Friskney. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1945. On October 15, 1945, she joined the Cadet Nursing Corps. in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She graduated from the IPFW School of Nursing in 1981. She married Robert Lee Coffelt on November 15, 1946, in Kendallville and he preceded her in death on October 9, 1990.  She worked as a psychiatric nurse for the Bluffton Clinic from 1981 to 1984 and then for the Samara Center at McCray Hospital in Kendallville  from 1984 until she retired in 1998.  Survivors include 4 daughters, Karen Morse of Fort Wayne, Charlotte Waldron of Ligonier, Alanna Coffelt of Kendallville and Jeanette “Pete” (Bill) Moody of Palm Harbor, Florida; two sons, Kim Coffelt of Kendallville and Kevin (Nori) Coffelt of Dade City, Florida; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Lee) Baldwin of Zephyrhills, Florida. Coffelt Herman Ray, 87, formerly of Kendallville, died Jan. 22, 2009 at the home of his sister in Wolcottville. He had been a farmer and had worked as a foreman at Kraft Foods. He was born in Kendallville on Feb. 10, 1921 to Ray and Edna (Gustin) Coffelt. Surviving are 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Joyce Lothamer of Jimmerson Lake, Marcia Conley and her husband, Jeff Raff, of Fort Wayne, and Rita and Van Knox of Kendallville; 5 grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Barr of Wolcottville. On Nov. 19, 1946 in Kendallville he married Doris Friskney. A U.S. Navy WW II veteran, he retired in 1986 as an electrician at Hossinger Refrigeration. Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Karen Milleman of Kendallville, Charlotte Waldron of Ligonier, Alanna McGuire of Albion and Jeanette Coffelt of Key West, Fla.; 2 sons, Kim of Kendallville and Kevin of Odessa, Fla.; 2 sisters, Mildred Kline of Kendallville and Betty Barr of Wolcottville; a brother, Herman of Kendallville; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Coffey Delbert, 40, 119 E. Wayne St., died early yesterday in his sleep at his residence from a heart condition. He was born March 3, 1931 in Benton Harbor, Mich. and was married June 30, 1962 in Sturgis to Anita Doherty. He was a resident here nine and one-half years, moving from R. R., Waterloo and was employed as an iron catcher at Newnam Foundry since 1957. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. Coffey Patrick D, 75, of Churubusco, died June 12, 2004 at his home. He had worked as an appliance technician for 40 years and retired in 2002. He served in the U.S. Army and was a U.S. Air Force veteran where he was a mechanic on B-52 bombers. He was the son of Bernard and Marie (Yates) Coffey. Coffman Betty J, 87, of Kendallville, died Aug. 7, 2010 at Parkview Noble Hospital. She was born in Ligonier on Apr. 23, 1923 to Charles and Harriett (Damey) Brady. She graduated from Ligonier High School in 1941 and married John Coffman in Ligonier on Feb. 19, 1944. He died June 24, 1991. She was employed with the East Noble School Corp. as a cook at Rome City School for 6 years. She also retired from Essex Wire in 1985. She was a member of the Brimfield United Methodist Church. Cogan Edward Leroy, 61, lifetime resident of Kendallville and community, died Friday in McCray Hospital. A resident of 213 E. Wayne St. in Kendallville, he was a native of near Traverse City, Mich., and came with his family to a farm near Kendallville fifty years ago. He was a son of Jacob and Mary Cogan, born November 24, 1893. For the last ten years, he had operated a popcorn stand in Kendallville. He was a member of the Fathers Auxiliary of Kendallville Post 2749, VFW. He was married August 16, 1913, to Martha Culver, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Harry, Hicksville, Ohio, Elton, Albion, and Gene, Kendallville; two daughters, Mrs. Willard Hawkins and Mrs. Herman Coffelt, Kendallville; two brothers, Frank Albion, and Sydney, Empire, Mich.; and eleven grandchildren. He was born in Kendallville on July 14, 1921 to Edward and Martha (Culver) Cogan. He married Betty Prouty in South Bend on Oct. 30, 1942. She died June 20, 2004. Cogan Jack E, 74, of Kendallville, died April 3, 2013, at Lutheran Life Village in Kendallville. He was born in Kendallville on June 28, 1938, to Harry and Pauline (Pichard) Cogan. He graduated from Kendallville High School. He married Sandra Bradey on December 30, 1959, in Brimfield. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. He worked at Fordeck Kemerly Electric of Kendallville and then for Dana Spicer Axle in Fort Wayne for 26 years, retiring in 2000.  He was a member of the Kendallville Moose Lodge 1301, American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville and the National Rifle Association.  Survivors include his wife; his parents of Avilla; one daughter, Michele (Cecil) Baisden of Albion; 5 grandchildren, Ryan (Nicole) Osborne, Tabitha Bowers, Kylie Cogan, Alexas Baisden and Allison Baisden; one great-granddaughter, Kylie Nicole Osborne; and 2 sisters, Marilyn Krock of Avilla and Sandra Moore of Albion. Cogan Martha F, 84, died Sunday in McCray Hospital. She was born in Wawaka May 10, 1895, the daughter of James H. and Celestia (Hathaway) Culver. She married Edward L. Cogan Aug. 16, 1913, and he died Nov. 4, 1955. She was the owner of the popcorn stand in Kendallville, which she operated for about 27 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Senior Citizens Club. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willard (Ruth) Hawkins, Avilla, and Mary Ann Coffelt, Kendallville; three sons, Elton, rural Albion, Gene, Avilla, and Harry R., Cedar, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Lentz, The Lamplighter in Kendallville; a brother, Buel Edward Culver of High Point, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Cogan Mary Ann, 74, native and resident of Wayne Twp near Kendallville died July 29 from lockjaw developing from a foot infection caused by a falling board. With the exception of 18 years in Michigan she had resided in Noble County. She was an active member of the United Brethren Church. Coil Albert A, 78, was born in Swan Twp July 14, 1895 to John A. and Eva (Hawk) Coil. His wife, Fern W. died Aug. 12, 1968. They were married Sept. 8, 1920. He was a member of Masonic Lodge in Avilla, First Christian Church in Kendallville, was a graduate of Tri State College and earned his master's degree from Butler University in Indianapolis. He taught in Fort Wayne schools for 41 years. He died Thursday in Johnson City Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, Tenn. Coil Archie C, 77, a retired rural mail carrier, died at his home near Avilla Tuesday from a heart condition. He was born near LaOtto on March 26, 1884 and resided in that area nearly all of his lifetime. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Coil. He lived on the farm six miles west of Garrett for the past eight years. When he was a rural mail carrier, he worked out of the post office at LaOtto. He and Anna Bruce were married in Brimfield in 1911 and she died January 14, 1945. Surviving are a son, Bruce, with whom he lived; two grandchildren, and three brothers, Albert of Warsaw, Frank in Texas and Nathan of Cleveland, Ohio. Coil Bruce, 71, R. 1, Avilla, died Saturday at his home. He was born in Noble County July 14, 1914, the son of Archie and Anna (Bruce) Coil. He married Edith Richards Dec. 21, 1935. He had lived near Avilla the past 50 years and was a former Noble County Councilman and Noble County Civil Defense Director. He was a retired farmer and had worked for Weigand Construction in Fort Wayne. In 1978 he retired from Starcraft in Topeka after five years. He was a former member of the Swan Methodist Church and attended Hopewell Presbyterian Church. He was a member of FOPA Lodge No. 6 in Fort Wayne and Rebekah Lodge, Garrett. Cole Alonzo Richard, 85, native of England and a resident of Kendallville for 52 years, died last Saturday at his home in Kendallville of complications. He was born Aug. 26, 1857 in Teignmouth, South Devon, England, and in 1887 came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cole, who settled in Iowa. After about a year there, he went to Chicago for two years, moved to Kendallville in 1890. On August 10, 1892 he married Harriet Isbell of Kendallville, who died in 1927. He was well-known throughout this section for his charitable activities and for many years was agent for the Noble County board of guardians until it was dissolved in 1936. Cole Belle "Betty", 98, died Wednesday in Jackson Medical Care Facility, Jackson, Mich. She was a retired teacher. Cole Betty Jo, 71, died Aug. 19, 2002 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was a member of Women of the Moose in Kendallville. She was born Sept. 23, 1930 to Hubert and Flora (Featherston) Hart in Indianapolis. On Oct. 22, 1949 she married Lloyd James Cole in Tipton. He died June 17, 1987. Cole Bruce, 86, of R. 4, Albion, died today (d. 4-9-1980) in Goshen Hospital. He was born in Central City, Pa. Oct. 3, 1893. He married Doris Airgood, who preceded him in death. Cole Charles, 18, local high school student who was drowned Sunday while attempting to swim to an island about one-half mile from the bathing beach at Rome City, was the son of Charles Cole, farmer who lives south of Albion. He went to the lake in company with Edgar Nowels, Bruce Stevenson, Fred Butler and Keith Slessman, fellow high school students. Nowels attempted to rescue the drowning boy and, in turn, was pulled from the water when he became exhausted. Surviving besides the parents are two sisters, Mrs. James Easterday of Van Wert, Ohio, and Mrs. Edward Bradley of Fort Wayne, and one brother, Lloyd Cole of near Albion. Cole Dora Bell, 72, was born in Noble County north of Wolf Lake Feb. 5, 1871, the daughter of William D. and Rachel Gray. She died Friday at her Albion home. She had one brother, who survives, Rollie, who lives west of Wolf Lake. She was a member of Wolf Lake Baptist Church. On Oct. 11, 1899 she married William R. Cole and they have lived in the Wolf Lake community since that time. To this union were born three children. She died last Friday at her home in Albion. Cole Frank W, 66, was born Sept. 10, 1868 in Jefferson Twp, the son of James R. and Martha Cole, and died at his home here Friday after a four day’s illness from pneumonia and heart complications. He spent his entire life in this community and during the past 25 years had owned and operated the Cole’s Variety Store. When about seven years old, his eyes became afflicted and a year later he became totally blind. He attended the school for the blind at Indianapolis where he learned the Braille system and received his education. Despite the fact he was blind he was able to go anywhere here unaided and at will, carrying on his daily routine. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Cole Gilbert Lester, 83, of Albion, died April 20, 2001 in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. A retired dairy farmer, he worked 27 years at General Electric and owned Hilltop Drive-In Restaurant. A U.S. Army veteran, he earned the Purple Heart. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Albion and a member of American Legion Post 246 in Albion. He served as a Noble County sheriff reserve officer. He was born March 24, 1918 in Albion to Charles and Etta (Lozier) Cole. On Feb. 24, 1940 he married June Belle Sapp in Brimfield. Cole Martha Jane (Ray) was born in Guernsey County, Ohio Dec. 3, 1848. She with her father, mother and 2 brothers came to Noble County in Sept. 1864. They were accompanied by an uncle, George Ray and family, all of whom have preceded her in death excepting Alfred and Milton Ray. She married James R. Cole Sept. 22, 1867, and they had 10 children, all of whom survive, Frank W., William R., Elmer E. of Albion, Prentice B. of Hamilton, Mo., Floyd R. of LaGrange County, Mary Munk from near Kendallville, Mattie Schlabach of Ligonier, Nellie Wiley of Fort Wayne, Kathryn Wadsworth of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Betty Cole of Denver, Col. She united with York Presbyterian Church in 1894 and later transferred her membership to the church in Albion. She resided in the home in which she died for 40 years. She died July 19, 1933. Cole Maude, daughter of Jerome and Rachel J. Kilgore, was born in Washington Twp, Dec. 8, 1877, and died at the home of her father April 6, 1926, aged 48 years, 3 months and 29 days. She attended school at Stringtown in Washington Twp and after graduating from the common branches, attended Ligonier School for one year. She married Laurin L. Cole Nov. 4, 1899. He died July 17, 1925 at their former home in Sparta Twp. She was a member of the Stringtown Christian Church where she was organist for several years. Cole W Mortimer, 71, Ligonier attorney and formerly of Cromwell, was found dead in the rear seat of his automobile which was only partially parked on Cavin St. in Ligonier Monday, the victim of a heart attack. He was a native of DeKalb County, Ind., and came to Cromwell in 1912 where he lived and practiced law until about 10 years ago when he moved to Ligonier. He was a member of Cromwell Lodge No. 705 F&AM. Coleman Michael of 603 Dowling St. died last night after a short illness of a dropsical nature. He was born in County Cork, Ireland 67 years ago and came to Bronson, Mich. when a young man. Soon after he came to this country - or 41 years ago - he entered the employ of the Lake Shore Railway and has been so employed practically ever since. He came to Kendallville more than 30 years ago and for many years has been seen about the Lake Shore depot and yards here where he worked as a signal maintainer and later as maintainer on the interlocker. Surviving are his wife, Catherine; 3 sons, Michael of Montpelier, O., Thomas of Three Rivers, Mich., and James of this city; and 2 daughters, Mary Coleman and Mrs. Forrest Butts of this city. He married Nora Bolen on May 8, 1937 in Rockfort, Ky. She died in 1983. He had lived in the area for the past 30 years, coming from Kentucky. He was a retired employee of the Pontiac Foundry in Fort Wayne and was a member of the Independent Baptist Church in South Milford. Collins Donald Keith, 27, formerly of Waterloo, was instantly killed Tuesday as a farm tractor upset on him in a field on the Harold Weeks farm approximately four miles southwest of here. A farmhand most of his life, he and his wife and four small daughters had resided on a farm adjoining the Weeks’ farm since March. He was born August 31, 1931, near Waterloo, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Collins, and was married to the former Zella Ann Miller. Also surviving are four daughters, Anna Marie 5; Margaret Ann 3; Deborah Kay 20 months; and Roberta Elaine, four months; three brothers, Maurice, Claire, and Paul Collins; two sisters, Klyta Jean and Gerra Lee, and two half-sisters, Norma Kinder, Vista, Calif.; and Helen McCartney, Zanesville. Collins Kenneth, 18, was accidentally killed Tuesday when he was struck in the head by a .22 caliber rifle bullet from a gun in the hands of a friend as he carried it down a flight of stairs at his home. The two were going hunting. A native of Columbia City and a New York Central section hand working out of Goshen, he had been a resident of Ligonier, living with an aunt there since the age of 7. On May 22, 1854 in Connersville he married Phyllis Sue Masters. He moved to Kendallville in Dec. 1974 from Miamisburg, Ohio. He was a graduate of Miami of Ohio and received his MBA from Indiana University. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and was employed by Flint & Walling as quality control manager. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Marcia Sue Kane of Muncie; a son, Matthew of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Timothy of Escondido, Calif., and William of Richmond; and a grandson, Jonathan Kane. Colpaert Henry O, 87, R. 1, Skinner Lake, Albion, died this morning at McCray Hospital after suffering a stroke. He was born in Belgium Aug. 10, 1888 to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Colpaert. He married Emma M. Crumbz in Belgium July 31, 1911. She died March 31, 1974. He was a retired farmer and had lived here for nine years. He moved to Albion from Roanoke, Ind. Survivors include two children, Mrs. Alberic DeBaillie, Lamplighter, Kendallville, and Achiel, Geneva, Ind.; and two sisters, Astre Schotte and Rinelida Desmite, both Belgium. Colwell Isabell - Robert Bolton residing east of town and James Bolton of Swan received telegrams Wednesday announcing the death of their eldest sister, Mrs. Isabell Colwell, at the home of her son at Imlay City, Mich. Combs Pauline, 76, of Albion, died July 3, 2008 at Northridge Village Nursing Home in Albion. She was born Dec. 10, 1931 in Perry County, Ky., to William and Stella (Hager) Lovelace. She married Ernest Combs on Dec. 26, 1950 in Hazard, Ky. He preceded her in death. Combs Pearl, 96, of Kendallville, died on June 14, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. She was born in Moorehead, Kentucky on March 5, 1916 to William and Plina (Hollan) McClanahan. She married William Ray Combs on January 5, 1934 in LaGrange. He died August 15, 1987. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kendallville. Survivors include 2 daughters, Margaret and Steve Leacock of Fort Wayne, Edith and LeRoy Young of Kendallville; 2 grandchildren, David and Colleen Young, and Terri and Regan Ford; 4 great-grandchildren, Kyle and Racheal Young, Kris and Brandy Young, Zachary and Elisabeth Anderson, and Jessica Anderson; and 7 great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Evelyn Louise; sister, Ethel Mynhier; brother, Harley McClanahan; and two half-brothers, Luther and Clarence McClanahan. , 29, R. 3, Monroeville, died Wednesday in Hindman, Ky., following an automobile accident en route home from a fishing trip. Born March 28, 1949 in Hazard, Ky., he was the son of David and Dolly (Terry) Combs. He married Kaye Jarrett May 10, 1969 in Wolcottville. He had lived in Monroeville one year, moving from Kendallville. He was employed at International Harvester, Fort Wayne and was a Viet Nam veteran and a member of the Monroeville American Legion. Surviving are his wife and parents who reside in Kendallville; a son, Keith, 7; a daughter, Melinda 5, both at home; a sister, Mrs. David (Lois) Thomas, Kendallville; three brothers, Robert J., Marion E., and Boyd Wayne, all Kendallville; grandparents, Marion Combs, Emmalena, Ky., and Mrs. Bertha Gault, Rome City. On Jan. 5, 1934 in LaGrange, he married Pearl McClanahan. He retired from Kraft Inc. July 1978 after 29 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Comer Helen V, 72, of Churubusco, died Saturday in Millers' Merry Manor, Columbia City. She was born Sept. 16, 1920 in St. Paris, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel and Laura (Hodson) Shadley. In 1939 in St. Paris she married Herbert Martin. He died in 1960. On July 4, 1961 in Brimfield she married Billy Comer, who died in 1983. She retired in 1981 from Weatherhead-Dana in Columbia City and was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco, VFW Post 3846 and American Legion Post 157 auxiliaries. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs. Phil (Gerri) Johnson, Mrs. Tom (Laura) Shultis and Kathryn Martin of Churubusco and Mrs. Dean (Rita) Eamick of Tucson, Ariz.; 4 sons, Herbert Martin Jr. of Chicago, Joseph Martin of Santa Rosa, Calif., Paul Martin and Billy Comer Jr. of Churubusco; a sister, Donna Beaver of St. Paris; 24 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Compton Anna, daughter of James and Martha Martin, was born May 5, 1864, and died Feb. 1, 1912, aged 65 years, 8 months and 6 days. She was left an orphan at the age of 6. She married Charles D. Compton in 1867. They had 5 children; one died in infancy. The youngest daughter, Minnie Simmons, died a few months ago. The husband died in 1893. Compton Helen M, 86, Ligonier, died Oct. 12 in Strawberry Village Nursing Home of an apparent heart attack and stroke. She was born in Ligonier on June 6, 1891, the daughter of Jesse and Alice (Spriegle) Gage and had lived her entire life in the Ligonier community. Her husband, Fred, died in 1951. She was retired from Essex Corporation. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Helen Dull, Ligonier; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Gage, Salem, Ind.; and a sister, Mrs. Anne Wilheim, Sturgis, Mich. Compton Paul Arthur, 50, Ligonier, died Sunday at his home from a heart ailment. He was born Dec. 21, 1919 in Goshen to Fred and Helen (Gage) Compton. He was a lifetime area resident and employed as an ABC Coachline bus driver. He was a member of the Eagles, Elks and American Legion in Ligonier and a veteran of WW II. Comstock Rachel (Friend) was born in Richland County, Ohio July 18, 1832 and died at Kendallville July 16, 1900 aged 68 years. She was married to T. C. Comstock in 1850. They had two girls and two boys. The two boys died early and Mr. Comstock lost his life by an accident ten years ago last Decoration Day. The two daughters, now Mrs. Ella Goodwin of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Alice Wilson of Indianapolis, survive. Mrs. Comstock was a member of the Baptist Church in Cleveland. She visited her sister, Mrs. James Knight, three weeks ago and was suddenly smitten with paralysis. Funeral at the residence of J. L. Knight in Kendallville July 18. ^ 7-20-1900
