Chambers Arthur Jr - Citizens of Ligonier were "startled" 100 years ago to learn of the suicide death of Arthur Chambers Jr., a member of the Ligonier Military Band, by an overdose of morphine Monday, July 9, 1888. Chambers had come to Ligonier about nine weeks earlier from St. Louis, Missouri, where he was a member of the U. S. Army Band at Jefferson Barracks under the name of John Wylie. Due to failing eyesight, he was discharged from the Army and was persuaded by Ell. F. Kitson to join the renowned Ligonier Military Band led by George Sack, Jr. This band won numerous prizes in competitions throughout the Midwest. Chambers, who was believed to have been "contemplating the rash act for some time" spent the early part of Sunday evening playing the flute in the Sack home, where he was staying, and at about 7:30 p.m., it is believed, took a large dose of morphine. During the night his struggles awoke Mr. and Mrs. Sack. After searching Chambers’ room and removing all morphine while they were able to discover, they left him alone. Prepared for such an eventuality, Chambers later withdrew more morphine from where he had secreted it in his pillow - and this time "the deadly drug performed its mission, as the Ligonier Banner dramatically put it. Efforts to arouse Chambers were made a second time, but to no avail. Little was known of Chambers’ background. He claimed to be the only son of an English sea captain and ran away from his home in Liverpool about nine years ago at the age of 17. Again, according to the Banner, "he was a cultured gentleman and a thorough musician, being one of the finest piccolo players in this country." + 7-9-1888

Chaney Jesse - A terrible tragedy was enacted at Garrett Saturday when Jesse Chaney, a dissolute character, murdered his divorced wife and then turned his deadly pistol upon himself. Mrs. Chaney lived but thirty minutes after the terrible affray; her slayer lingered in an unconscious condition until 4:30 Saturday afternoon when his death ensued. Chaney’s victim was raised in this vicinity and will be remembered by many friends as Mary Aman. She was first married to John Harrison, a B & O engineer, whose death occurred in the west some years ago. Two children, a son and a daughter by this marriage, survive her. Her marriage to Chaney at Garrett a few years ago did not prove a happy one, and in October 1897 she obtained a divorce from him, charging him with drunkenness and failure to support his family. Since that time Chaney has been going from bad to worse and has been such a constant annoyance to her that she has at different times been compelled to ask for the protection of the law. Mrs. Chaney and her little son have been occupying rooms at the old Sargent Hotel, and on Friday evening were out calling on a neighbor. During their absence Chaney crawled into the house by way of a cellar window, leaving his shoes in the cellar. He proceeded upstairs and secreted himself in a closet in Mrs. Chaney’s room. This must have been before 9 o’clock and for some unknown reason the man remained in the closet several hours. He may have fallen into a stupor, or possibly was waiting until the neighbors were asleep and there was least danger of detection. In any event, an immense pool of tobacco spit found in the closet attests the fact that he was hidden there several hours. Mrs. Chaney and her son, a lad about 15 years of age, came home soon after 9 o’clock and retired. Between 1 and 2 o’clock Chaney emerged from the closet and began abusing the woman, striking her with a club. The boy was awakened by his mother’s cries of "Murder!" and quickly dashed out of the building in his night clothing and ran to the railroad roundhouse for help. Some of the workmen there hurried back with the boy, and as they ran they heard several shots from a revolver. On reaching the room a horrible sight met their gaze. Mrs. Chaney was mortally wounded, one bullet having pierced her stomach and another entered her left chest, just below the collar bone. She died in about half an hour without regaining consciousness. Nearby lay the body of her murderer. After shooting the woman, Chaney had fired a shot into his own head. Mrs. Chaney was 44 years of age. Her funeral services were held Monday morning at Garrett and the remains were brought to this place for interment in the Catholic Cemetery. Chaney’s body was shipped to Montpelier, Ohio, for burial at his former home. ~ 10-13-1898

Chappell Francis, 67, and Clara died in a murder-suicide appeared to have been brought about by his despondency over her ill health. The Chappells came to Kendallville about 15 years ago from Pennville, having engaged in the furniture and undertaking business with the son, James M. Chappell. The latter retired from the business here over two years ago, moving to Louisville, where he now holds the position as vice president of the Kentucky Lumber & Millwork Co., where the elder was employed. Two years ago last September Francis disposed of his interests in the undertaking business to Mrs. Grace Reyher and Raymond D. Irwin. According to details about the Louisville tragedy, Francis fatally shot his sick wife, Mrs. Clara Armenda Chappell, 62, in the head and then ended his life by turning the weapon upon himself at their home, 1851 Bonnycastle Ave. The son, James M. discovered the tragedy yesterday morning. With two bullet holes over her right temple, she was still alive but unconscious, and died at 8:33 o’clock. He was dead in bed with a bullet hole in his right temple. A revolver clutched in his right hand gave evidence of the circumstances of the double tragedy. The son said his mother had been in ill health for several months and it preyed upon his father’s mind. He recalled a recent conversation in which is father told of his worry, "I don’t know how I can stand it much longer." The weapon used was a new one of cheap make and purchased for the purpose it was put to. James said he had never seen it before and did not know his father possessed it.
