Bolton Robert was born April 13, 1831 in Newcastle, New Foundland,
England. When a child of three years he came with his parents across the ocean
and settled in Quebec, Canada for one year, then to Broadwell, Can., where they
stayed 16 years; from thence to Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, New York. When
he was about 21 years of age he came to Avilla and lived on a farm east of town until Oct. 8, 1861 when he enlisted in the 5th Indiana battery, light artillery and fought in the Civil War three years and
three months. After his return he settled on a farm in Swan Twp. On April 19,
1866, he married Nancy Jane Stewart at the home of her parents, Uriah Stewart
and wife, Rev. J. P. Moore, Presbyterian minister, officiating. She was born in
Allegheny, Pa., in 1847 and was 19 years of age when married. They went to
housekeeping in the home of the groom at once and lived at that place for 33
years, when they moved to a small farm just east of Avilla where they now have
lived 17 years. They had five children, Mrs. Harry Bovee, who
lives on her parents’ farm, William, Robert Jr., Mrs. Seigal Crawford
and Mrs. Robert Miller all living in Kendallville. The four men, two sons, and
two sons-in-law are mail clerks on the NYC Railroad, Mr. Crawford serving in
that capacity for 22 years. Two children, Mrs. Alice Fulk of Gary and Charles
Bolton of Auburn are children of his by a former marriage. There are twelve
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Marris of Gary and little Nancy Jane, daughter of Dr. H. O. Williams and
wife of Kendallville. (Note: The preceding was published at the occasion of
their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Bolton died in 1919 and was
buried in Swan Cemetery.) ~ 4-26-1916 Our venerable townsman, Robert Bolton, passed the eighty-first milestone in his
life’s journey last Saturday and his children and grandchildren celebrated the
event with a family dinner under the paternal roof.Covers
were laid for eighteen and a pleasant day was enjoyed by all.
Those present were Chas. Bolton of Auburn, Mrs. R. E. Bolton and son, R. C. Miller and wife, William Bolton and family,
and S. E. Crawford and family all of Kendallville; and H. C. Bovee and family of
Avilla. R. E. Bolton of Kendallville, and Mrs. Alice Fulks of Gary, were unavoidable absent. Mr.
Bolton has lived to record many changes in our nation’s progress, in her
onward march. He was born at New Castle, England, in 1831. Three years later, with
his parents, crossed the Atlantic in a sailing vessel (steam boats being
at that time a novelty) and for twelve long weeks was tossed at sea, the captain
losing his way through ignorance of voyaging and stormy weather.
Because of the long voyage, rations became short and consisted of but one
biscuit a day for each passenger. They finally reached Quebec, Canada, where they lived for some years. Subsequently
Wisconsin became this home until he moved to Indiana, where he became one of the pioneer farmers of this section.
In 1861 at the call of his country he responded by volunteer service
which for three years he nobly and bravely gave for freedom’s cause.
The war over he once more pursued farming until thirteen years ago when
he retired from active duty as farmer and became a resident of Avilla.
He has always been a staunch Republican and keeps himself well posted on
all general topics of the day. He retains well his mental faculties, physically is well preserved man enjoys
life and to mingle with friends he deems a great pleasure.

Borck Francis J was born in Ahenheim, Prussia, May 10, 1810 and died
March 29, 1893, aged 82 years, 10 months, 19 days. He emigrated to this country
in 1833, arriving in Seneca County, Ohio, November 20. He came to Indiana with
Daniel Bixler, landing in Kendallville August 25, 1836. For a home he cleared
sixty acres of land extending from Main St. to the lake. While living with Mr.
Bixler he became acquainted with Miss Anna Margrete Weimer, whom he later
married. Miss Weimer came to America with her parents in 1832, landing in
Baltimore, Md., and came to Avilla April 6, 1835. Mr. Weimer entered a piece of
land, 160 acres, adjoining Avilla on the north. Now talk about the trials of man
– here is a case to try anybody: When Samuel Weimer (my mother’s father)
received his deeds his land was pointed out to him and he located on what is now
John Bauhaus Jr.’s place, cleared a farm and built a log cabin and a barn upon
it. Then came the news that he was not on his own land. So he had to quit this
farm and seek another. They pointed out to him the land on which John Heckman
Jr. now lives as his, and upon this Mr. Weimer built another log cabin and began
clearing the farm. Quite a piece of land had been cleared when he was again
notified that he was on the wrong farm. Now came the hour of trial; hard labor
gone, poverty and despair stared them in the face. But Mr. Weimer plucked up
courage, found his own land at last and went sturdily to work building his third
log cabin and improving his third farm. From this time prosperity smiled on
them. There were three children in the family - Peter, Mary M., and Anna M.,
and each was given a portion of their father’s land. But we must now turn back
to Frank Borck, as he was better known. He first entered a piece of land east of
Kendallville; this he traded for the farm on which Ignatius Meyer now lives;
then he rented William Mitchell’s farm. On November 12, 1837, he married Anna
M. Weimer in Fort Wayne. Times were hard and pluck and grit were required. They
moved into what was called the Henderson house. It stood near the present Union
depot, but a little west, on the banks of Henderson Lake, Kendallville. Father
farmed in Kendallville from the fall of 1837 until the spring of 1841, when they
moved to Avilla, purchasing the second log cabin built by Samuel Weimer on the
Heckman farm. This log cabin he moved upon the present farm of Ignatius Meyer.
Here they lived until 1863, when they returned to Kendallville. While living
there, father built a portion of what is now the Flint & Walling plant. In
1866 they moved to Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio, where they lived until they died.
Anna M. Borck died May 13, 1874, and Francis J. on March 29, 1893. They had ten children, seven of whom are yet living. ~ 4-13-1893 ^ 4-21-189312.0pt">
