Baker Alpheus was born in Cornwall, Addison County, Vermont, April
14, 1795, where he passed his early life. On Aug. 19, 1820 he married Adelia
Burgess, with whom he lived 9 years, when death carried her away, leaving him a
widower with 4 small children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom survive him.
On Feb. 7, 1830 he married Mrs. Mercy Mott, a widow with 3 children, who
provided a faithful companion for the remainder of his life, a period of 58
years had he lived until the 7th of next month. On the anniversary of
her 85th birthday, the wife saw the remains of her husband borne to
their final resting place. After his second marriage, being then a resident of
Ohio, with a family of 10 children and limited means, like many of the early
pioneers, he settled in Noble County Aug. 16, 1836 in a little cabin where the
village of Lisbon is now situated, but later moving on his own land half a mile
west of Lisbon. At that time this part of Indiana was almost an unbroken
wilderness and all the difficulties and perils of a settlement in a new country
stared from every side. Dense woods surrounded the place marked out for a home,
and Indians were almost the only inhabitant. On the day after arriving in this
country he lost his team - almost his all - they having strayed away and
supposed to have been taken by the blacklegs that then infested the counties of
Noble and LaGrange. He participated in the War of 1812 in that decisive action
at Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain. In our late war he was represented by 5 sons
in loyal blue responding to our Union call. In 1837 he united with the Methodist
Church, a feeble society in Lisbon, and upon the organization of that society in
Kendallville he became a member. Nurtured and cared for by and at the residence
of his youngest son, Frank, he died Jan. 11. Funeral was at the residence the

Baker Mercy (Hopkins) was born in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vt.,
January 3, 1803, and died at the residence of her son, Frank A. Baker, in Allen
Twp, Noble County, Ind., March 22, 1895, aged 92 years, 2 months and 9 days. She
was married to Silas S. Mott April 1, 1821. To this union were born two sons and
one daughter: Matthew, Silas and Ruinda (Potter), all of whom preceded their
mother to the spirit world many years. After the death of her first husband, she
married Alpheus Baker, February 7, 1830, who died in January 1888, in his
ninety-third year. By her last marriage seven children were born, four of whom,
Timothy, Caleb, Mary (Richards) and Frank are still living. For the past
twenty-five years her home had been with her youngest son, Frank, four miles
south of the city of Kendallville. Mr. and Mrs. Baker came to Noble County in
August 1836 and settled in a log cabin which stood near the present site of the
school house in Lisbon. A year or two later they removed about half a mile
further west and began to make a home on what has been known for years as the
Baker farm, then an unbroken forest and now occupied by Mr. T. D. Baughman and
Mr. George Tyler. Mr. and Mrs. Baker's family was the third to settle in Allen
Twp, Mr. G. T. Ulmer's being the first. He came in 1834 and settled where
Iddings Addition to Kendallville is now located; Samuel Weimer's was second.
They came in the spring of 1836 and settled near Avilla. When Mr. and Mrs. Baker
arrived in Noble County there were ten in their family, four of Mr. Baker's by a
previous marriage, three by her first marriage and three by their last union.
They came with little means, and the privations and hardships peculiar to
settlers in a new and heavily-timbered country were experienced by them. They
brought, however, an abundant supply of indomitable energy, perseverance, heroic
endurance and fortitude, which served them even better than money, and they
prospered, reared their children and lived to see them fill honored and useful
places in life. Mrs. Baker was a well-formed, healthy woman, and possessed a
rugged constitution, an essential requisite to resist and combat the sickly
malarial influences so peculiar to the early history of this county. She seemed
well-fitted for pioneer life and appeared to enjoy it. She was a most exemplary
Christian woman, endowed with all the attributes of a grand and noble womanhood,
and it may be said of her that she filled and rounded out the full measure of
life's aims, purposes and duties. She was never happier than when ministering to
the comfort and happiness of her family, her neighbors and friends. A peculiar
feature, and one that deserves more than passing notice, is the war record of
her family, of which she was justly proud. Mr. Baker, her husband, was a soldier
of the War of 1812, and no less than six of her sons and two sons-in-law took
prominent parts in the bloody drama of the War of the Rebellion, and several of
them carry gunshot wounds inflicted upon them during the contest. During the
last year or two of her life she was afflicted somewhat with rheumatic trouble,
but the immediate cause of her death was perhaps the result of a fall she
sustained in February last, which fractured the bones of her hip. She was
tenderly cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker and her daughter, Mrs. Mary
Richards, who was called here from her home in Michigan. Her funeral took place
on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Mrs. Elizabeth (Crone) Jones of
Garrett, a former neighbor and highly prized friend, delivered an impressive
funeral discourse. The remains were laid beside those of her family in the
Lisbon cemetery nearby and overlooked the scenes of her pioneer home. ^

Baker William was born near Lisbon Oct. 17, 1841 where he resided with
his parents until the beginning of the war. He enlisted in Co. G, 30th Indiana Infantry and was with the regiment until wounded at the Battle of Shiloh
and discharged. He was married to Clara J. Covell in Ligonier Sept. 3, 1863 and
the next year again responded to his country’s call for troops and enlisted in
the 152nd Indiana regiment and remained to the close of the war. From
that time he was occupied mostly in teaching school until in 1879, his health
failing, he went to Coffey County, Kansas and engaged in the more healthy
occupation of farming. During the great boom of so many towns all through that
country he sold out his farm and embarked in business in the thriving little
town of Hutchison, since grown to quite a city. Here he lost the most of the
little property he had accumulated, and with broken health he and his wife
started west, stopping at some of the principal towns in New Mexico, Texas,
Arizona, Colorado and California, ever seeking but never finding the goal of
never-failing health, consumption having already taken too strong a hold on him.
As a student he had made the eye an especial study and since leaving Hutchison
has been engaged in optical work. For the last 2 years he has passed most of his
time with his brother Frank, and his wife’s father, Lewis Covell in Garrett.
