Anderson - the little daughter of Jerry Anderson of this city, died last
Saturday of typhoid fever. Funeral was last Monday. ^
12-8-1881
Anderson Alonzo, a black merchant, was the builder of the building at 113
N. Main St., Kendallville. Russell Frehse located deed records showing
that Anderson and his wife, Emma, purchased the Main St. property in 1890 for
$805. The brick building was erected in 1894 and finished in 1895. Anderson and
his brother, Jerry, were Kendallville barbers. A newspaper article dated Jan.
1896 reports that "Lon Anderson moved his barbershop to his own building
(113 N. Main St.)." Alonzo was born in Terre Haute July 15, 1845, one of 16
children. He lived in Tennessee until 1849 when he, with his parents, moved to
Kokomo. In 1864 he enlisted in the 28th U. S. Colored Regiment and
during the Civil War marched into Richmond, Va., where General Lee surrendered.
He was mustered out of the Army in 1868. The same year he married Elizabeth
Cumbo, who died in 1872. Alonzo’s parents apparently moved to Kendallville in
the 1860’s. Reports claim that his mother was part Potowatomi Indian and part
Negro (reportedly related to Chief Pokagon). He moved here with his second wife,
Emma Floyed, in 1874. He had no children, but his brother, Jerry, had five,
including Dr. Warner Anderson, a respected medical doctor. According to
newspaper reports and recollections from some old-timers, the Anderson family
were all highly-respected people in Kendallville. When Warner Anderson graduated
from the Fort Wayne Medical College in 1895, newspaper reports said the city
"was proud of him". Alonzo died in 1898. His wife sold the Main St.
building in 1900 to Mary Zonker. Mrs. Anderson died in 1908. Her obituary said
"Although a colored lady, Mrs. Anderson never met with disfavor in this
city, being a perfect lady and always receiving treatment as such." She and
other members of her family were buried in Lake View Cemetery, the only recorded
black people buried there. + No date. ^ 10-27-1899
