Davault Elisha, a farmer residing about 2 miles northwest of Cromwell in Sparta Twp committed suicide July 7 by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. Mrs. Margaret Davault, aged 53, wife of the deceased, testified as follows: "On the 7th of July, 1899, my husband came home about 3 o’clock, having been gone all day, and said he was going to the funeral of David Myers, who had been dead 20 years. I tried to get him to stay at home and to get that idea out of his head. He finally said he would stay, but that if he did, he would kill me and himself before morning. He went into his bedroom and when I looked in in a few minutes I saw he had a pistol. I tried to get the pistol from him but he got hold of it first. I ran out and called help. I was just outside the house when I head a shot." He was about 70 years of age and was quite eccentric in his habits; there is no doubt but that his mind has been affected for several years, but it was not thought that he was dangerous. On Wednesday he attended the funeral of his brother-in-law, Abraham Maggart who had resided east of Syracuse and as he was viewing the remains, he exclaimed in a voice loud enough for all to hear, "I will be the next to go." Sometime ago application was filed in the clerk’s office for a guardian to be appointed, but he said that if a guardian was appointed over him he would kill himself and the application was withdrawn. It is supposed that he purchased the revolver on the day he killed himself as his wife said that previous to that time he did not own a revolver. He was the father of Thomas J.
